HighestWelfare.Humane.Assured.GoodPractices.Vegetarian. Regenerative.Flexitarian.Lies...
What is the difference between No Welfare, High Welfare, and Highest Welfare when they all require animals to die? Only human comfort, NONE protect the actual animals. The most humane, ethical, and honest Webster-defined "welfare" is NOT exploiting animals - not using, not wearing, not eating, not killing - animals. The only meaningful position is vegan, everything else is just how humans euphemize animals' required suffering and violent deaths: no human exploits animals because they honestly believe that NOT exploiting animals is UNethical or INhumane.

On the 21st of November 2011, ‘Kate’ was given unprecedented open access to an abattoir in Victoria’s Gippsland. What she captured on film shocked and appalled authorities who, within hours of receiving a formal complaint and video from Animals Australia, shut the slaughterhouse down and launched a full investigation.
In her witness statement ‘Kate’ described how stunning equipment was routinely stabbed into the eyes and ears of pigs and recounted the awful final moments of one terrified pig who had escaped the killing pen before being beaten to death with a sledgehammer. Tragically, another escaped pig ran into the scalding tank.
Australian regulations and standards failed to protect these animals from cruelty but as the footage reveals, even if they had, animals would still have been afraid; they still would have suffered.

Wherever animals are handled and slaughtered en masse there will be suffering and there will be fear. This is the reality of factory farming and slaughterhouses in Australia (and everywhere – SL, OC).
The final moments of animals raised for food are seldom known or told, yet they desperately need to be. Because we live on, and we still have choices to make, they need us to make informed and compassionate ones.

Placer County Animal Services/Mike Winters: Investigate for Bow-Tie
From Change
Why This Is Important
Regarding the recent News10 report on A Chance for Bliss Animal Sanctuary (http://auburn.news10.net/news/news/87885-critics-question-placer-animal-sanctuary-fundraising ) the news story stated that BowTie, an elderly dog belonging to this rescue organization, died in June of this year by being left in a hot vehicle. This is a very disturbing incident that requires an investigation since there are so many animals still in the care of these founders of this rescue organization.
Petition Letter
Greetings,
I just signed the following petition addressed to: Placer County Animal Services/Mike Winters:
Investigate for Bow-Tie
Regarding the recent News10 report on A Chance for Bliss Animal Sanctuary( http://auburn.news10.net/news/news/87885-critics-question-placer-animal-sanctuary-fundraising )the news story stated that BowTie, an elderly dog belonging to this rescue organization, had died in June of this year by being left in a hot vehicle. This is a 501c3 organization, that should be held to a very high standard of care for these animals. The Bartleys have admitted this incident as an “accident” . This “accident” along with other concerns that have been raised by witness’s, is at the very least cause for an investigation. Please put the communities concerns to rest and make sure there is no evidence that no other animals lives are being jeopardized by any actions of severe negligence. Thank you.

Ban the Tiger Trade: One Quick Petition

Please click on and sign:
The Premier of China, Wen Jiabao has publicly stated that he is committed to saving the wild tiger. (Read his comment – Nov 2010.) However, his government is allowing trade in tiger skins from tiger farms and skins taken before poaching was outlawed. This trade is acting as a smokescreen for skins taken by killing wild tigers. If China does not stop this trade, the wild tiger is doomed. See how they obtain the tigers.
Message Text
I appeal to Premier Wen Jiabao to send a clear message to his government, calling for an end to all tiger trade within China. This is to include a call for a zero tolerance policy applied to all trade of all parts and derivatives of tiger and other protected Asian big cats, from all sources.

From The Huffington Post
By Jerry Cope
The Big Fix, Josh and Rebecca Tickell’s powerful new film documenting the massive cover-up of the continuing effects from BP’s Blowout at the Macondo site in the Gulf of Mexico, premiered to open the 22nd Annual New Orleans Film Festival Friday night. The filmmakers who received tremendous acclaim for their previous film Fuel, spent over a year of their lives along the Gulf Coast and in the case of Rebecca, was severely poisoned as a result of exposure to highly toxic crude oil and the Corexit dispersant. The result of their effort is a compelling indictment of both BP’s and the Obama administration’s response to the spill. The Tickell’s have produced a truly must-see documentary film which will inform, anger, and rouse to action a great many Americans who are fortunate enough to see it.
The filmmakers traveled extensively along the Gulf Coast States impacted by the BP spill as well as Washington D.C. and cities across the country. Numerous residents who reside on the Gulf coast; fishermen, sickened citizens, public officials, scientists, oil company officials, industry experts, and leading environmental attorneys speak to the BP spill and both the media’s failure to report the story and the government’s deliberate cooperation in assisting BP in covering up the true extent of the blowout.
I spoke with Josh and Rebecca Tickell about their film along with several others featured in the The Big Fix regarding the fresh crude that continues to surface from the Macondo site.
JC: How would you describe your film?
JT: Well there were and are basically five cover-ups, the big elephant in the room is the fact there is still oil coming in and there is a complete disconnect from what is happening daily — the oil coming in on shore — and what the U.S. media is reporting. I think the most telling side of the oil being connected to the Macondo well is that Ed Overton himself, who we now know was even contracted by BP and paid directly by BP, Ed proved the scientific connection between the oil washing onshore has the same chemical signature as the oil from the BP well.
JC: You spent over a year of your lives down there as did I, we were poisoned along with countless others, what would you like to see happen at this point going forward?
RT: For me personally Jerry, I just want the truth to come out. Some honesty and respect for all the people down here. On top of the environmental disaster, the dishonesty and cover-up that is still going on just adds insult to injury. When (Kenneth) Feinberg says that he had no documentation that proved that people were getting sick as a result of exposure to the oil that is just not the case. I have a letter from the Chair of Columbia University School of Doctors and Surgeons Dr. Vincent Deleo that says mine is not a preexisting condition, that what I am experiencing is irreversible poikilderma and that to a reasonable degree of medical certainty it is due to exposure to dispersant and oil.
Vodpod videos no longer available.
Stuart Smith is a preeminent Environmental Attorney in New Orleans and has been deeply involved in determining the true extent of the BP Spill since day one. It was Smith who first reported the fresh oil slick coming from the source this summer and used his considerable resources to determine that the oil wears a “fingerprint” match to Macondo crude.
JC: How about some background on how the fresh oil from Macondo came onto your radar?
SS: We have always been concerned with the geologic structure associated with the Macondo well and the reservoir because of the way they were mishandled due to BP’s haste in trying to stop the flow of the oil. From the very beginning of this the petroleum engineers who work for me made it clear that the only way they were going to stop it was from a relief well. Yet BP proceeded to do all these dangerous operations including the top kill operation where they were pumping under extreme pressures drilling mud against the flow of the oil into the wellbore itself we think that they likely damaged the well bore and that there was probably an underground blowout during these operations damaging the geologic structures. As part of our continuous testing program we continued to get reports of oil washing up back in March which were fingerprint matches for fresh Macondo oil. That was powerful evidence because if it was oil associated with the equipment that had fallen, the riser that had fallen to the bottom of the sea it would have been weathered. Even at that depth it would not have been fresh. Then I got a call from a very reliable source who said that he believed there was a leak associated with the well and that BP had hired people to go out there and try to clean it up.
JC: What was the time frame on that?
SS: That was in August. I confirmed through another source that there was oil coming up from the reservoir. Where it is coming from, whether it through cracks, crevices, they are not saying. After that I put out a blog post saying it is still leaking and I got a huge pushback from a lot of people and to be honest I got a little nervous. Basically I put myself out there if you know what I mean. Bonny Schumaker of On Wings of Care agreed to fly out there and see for herself. She flew out and there was the slick as well as ROV’s deployed in the water. She photographed the site and we put that up online. Both the Coast Guard and BP did the same old thing, they said there is no oil, it’s not leaking — we were wrong and it was something else. So a sample is sent to BP’s and the Coast Guard’s expert Ed Overton who confirms that the oil is a fingerprint match to Macondo oil. They are going to come and say that yes there is Macondo oil but that these are natural seeps. They will not come out and admit that the well did it because that would be BP’s ass.
JC: Is that a possibility, that natural seeps are now releasing from the reservoir?
SS: No. When BP did their permit application for this well, they were required to survey that oil field lease area for seeps. So, unless those seeps were reported by BP before they drilled the well, they are not natural.
JC: This sounds like what was being discussed very early on, that the seafloor had been fractured and there was no way to stop the flow from the Macondo site. One Russian scientist who was brought in described the site as resembling a gigantic shattered windshield on the ocean floor.
SS: Which begs the question where is all the video from the recent ROV’s they have deployed? What is most interesting is that they have never denied that there is oil coming from the site. Neither BP or the Coast have ever denied this fact.
Dr. Ira Leifer, NASA’s Chief Mission Coordinating Scientist for the Remote Sensing Missions on the BP Spill had this to say after The Big Fix premiere:
IL: The Northern Gulf of Mexico has long been known to contain natural oil and gas seepage, which allows oil from the reservoir layer to reach the seabed, and it is known that there are areas of natural seepage near the Deepwater Horizon blowout. However, this is not reassuring but highly worrisome because it proves that pathways exist connecting with the ocean the same reservoir that was blowing out the severed casing.
And here is where I get concerned — The broken casing of DWH lost untold tons of mud and uncounted thousands or hundreds of thousands of barrels of oil into an intermediate layer somewhere in the thousands of feet thick sediment overlying the reservoir and capping rocks. There is no way of knowing how much. If that pressurized oil and gas connects with natural pathways, then it will make its way to the seabed. Could this be happening? I don’t know, but the evidence of new areas of seepage (natural or BP-Enhanced) is very worrisome. I sincerely hope that the seabed source is identified soon and a monitoring system is emplaced to ensure the Gulf is not facing a new oil breakout.
Michelle Rodriguez is a strong supporter of the film in a striking array of images wearing nothing but oil (see above). She offered her thoughts on why the government’s response continues to ignore the extent of the disaster and its impact on the health and welfare of Coastal residents.
I think people weren’t more active around the oil spill cause they don’t know. They think that it’s handled — the government took care of it; the oil people took care of it. I think that people are willing to buy this story that it’s all cleaned up and it will all go away because of the convenience of it all. The people in power are thinking about their reelection; they’re thinking about, maintaining their job as CEO of a massive corporation; and they’re worried about their stocks not plummeting. I think ultimately all these short-term priorities are really what created the oversights that led to the oil spill.
The Big Fix will screen again at the New Orleans Film festival on Wednesday October 19th. It opens in Los Angeles November 11-18 at the AMC Broadway, and in New York Dec 2- 9 at the AMC Village 7. Be sure to wear your Hazmat suit.

2. Stop Canada’s FURociousness!
Background | From Change
This is a petition to the Dutch Minister of Environment who has agreed on a genetically engineered (GM) vaccination study re foals in foals from 3 days old until 6 months.
They use a GM-bacterium. The little horses will stay with their mothers in stables and on grassland and the manure with the GMO in it will be put on the land. The little horses shall eventually be killed (in case of biopsy) after the study is done. The European GMO-free Citizens agree with a Dutch signer who wrote that, GM-vaccines are very dangerous. There is a real risk of the generation of new pathogens with greater virulence and a broader host-range than the original pathogen. And there is no possibility of undoing it.The European GMO-free Citizens don’t want this GM vet-vaccine and have written this petition, which you can sign.
We will go to the Dutch Council of State in the Hague. This topic and these signatures are brought to their attention. The hearing will be on October the 3rd 2011.
The Dutch Council of State
Advisory body on legislation and administrative court
The Council of State has two primary tasks, carried out by two separate divisions. The Advisory Division, as its name implies, advises the government and Parliament on legislation and governance, while the Administrative Jurisdiction Division is the country’s highest general administrative court. The basis for these responsibilities can be found in articles 73 and 75 of the Constitution.
Like the House of Representatives and the Senate, the Netherlands Court of Audit and the National Ombudsman, the Council is one of the High Councils of State. These are bodies regulated by the Constitution, which carry out their tasks independently of the government.

Angora Rabbit fur is factory farmed. Angora rabbits usually live to be about 10-13 years old, but factory rabbits are killed after 6-9 months. The rabbits live out their short lifespans in cramped cages, inside dimly lit warehouses, in cages that have wire bottoms and hurt their little rabbit feet.
There is no good reason to include 5% rabbit fur in a Lane Bryant sweater; the fur is not necessary for a good quality garment. Lane Bryant has had a long-standing history of quality clothing and has the ability to create a high-quality sweater with no rabbits in it. Additionally, we would like to be able to trust that the clothes we buy from our favorite clothing store do not have torture in them.
For the love of rabbits, the 5% should go!

It has come to our attention that Skechers wants to use Tucson Greyhound Park as the backdrop for a new TV commercial. Please sign this petition to ask them not to support the cruelty of dog racing.
At TGP, greyhounds are kept confined in small cages which are barely large enough for them to stand up or turn around. They are fed raw 4-D meat, the meat of downed, diseased, disabled or dead livestock. This was documented in a recent video investigation and in news reports available on our web site at: http://grey2kusa.org/action/states/az.html
While racing, greyhounds face the risk of serious injury. According to the Arizona Department of Racing, nearly 1,000 greyhound injuries occurred between January 2007 and November 2009, the last year such records were made available to the public. To read more about injuries and Arizona greyhound racing in general, please see our 128-page report at http://grey2kusa.org/pdf/AZ2011.pdf

More than 95% of animals for sale at Petland USA stores are from commercial puppy mills. According to transport and shipping records from the Department of Agiculture involving more than 5 States,17,000 puppies delivered to Petland were sourced from puppy mills. USDA inspection records were cross-checked and source facilities were visited to confirm this fact. HSUS led this investigation.
Petland Canada has announced they will stop selling pets, why not Petland USA? Successful Petland franchisee conversions to adoption models are operating in PA with help from local shelters.
We know the Master Franchisor (Petland USA, Ohio) cannot by fiat dictate that everyone follow a new policy. They can announce their intention and new policy, and current franchisees are free to run their businesses as they see fit. Yet a sea-change in policy from the top would be a giant leap in saving lives and changing Petland’s reputation and market share. It would not take long for laggards to follow as we push for legislation against selling pets and picket with ‘adopt don’t shop’ signs.
Turn your ship around, Petland USA – change your policy! Stop selling pets, fire puppy mills, choose instead the benefits of community support. Your voicemail message says you care about animals. Prove it – step up, be a policy leader and save lives!

It’s tough being a student when bullies are allowed to physically and verbally hurt you at school. Unfortunately, because of a dangerous new bill passed by the Michigan State Senate, it’s only going to get worse.
On November 2, minutes before voting to pass a new bullying bill, the Michigan State Senate added special language that provides a blueprint for bullies. According to this language, as long as the bullying is done because of “a sincerely held religious belief or moral conviction,” then it’s ok.
As students, we deserve better.
I was in 7th grade putting my books in my locker when a few guys game up behind me. They called me a faggot and a dyke and asked me why I even bothered to show my face at school because no one liked me. I ignored them because I was scared of what else they might say and who else they might tell if I stood up to them. I went to shut my locker when an 8th grader pushed me against the wall. I didn’t know what to do so I stood there, alone and afraid. One of his friends slammed my locker shut on my hand breaking my fourth finger. I held back tears while I watched them run away laughing. When I got home I lied to my parents about what happened to my finger because I didn’t want them to tell the school. I was afraid the school would do nothing accept call me out in front of everyone.
My name is Katy Butler, I am now a junior at Greenhills School in Ann Arbor Michigan and I am lesbian. For me, 7th grade was four years ago and writing about that event, even thinking about it, I still tear up. Stopping the “License to Bully” bill and passing real anti-bullying legislation is so important to me because I don’t want anyone else to have to have such strong, painful memories. Being bullied because of something I couldn’t change hurt, but it hurt even more that my school did not do anything about something that they could change.
My story is not unique. Students all across Michigan have stories just like mine. Students like my friend Carson Borbely, who is currently in eighth grade:
A few weeks ago in class, I brushed a friend’s hair away from her face. A loud voice sharply interrupted, ‘Don’t touch her. Trannies carry diseases.’ The teacher didn’t do anything. That was the fourth incident in her class that I had been harassed by the same boy. Nothing was done. The only reprimand he got was a sharp calling of his name. The teacher asked him passively to stop. He continued.
Carson and I are speaking out for all those students who suffer every day at school. We’re speaking out because we deserve a bill that will actually protect us at school, not make it more dangerous, or give bullies a free pass. People keep telling us youth “It Gets Better”. Well it can’t get better if you don’t make it better. I’m doing my part to help, please do yours.
Please stand with students across the state and sign our petition demanding that the Michigan State Legislature pass a real anti-bullying bill. One that doesn’t have special exceptions, but does list the reasons students are bullied most often, and does add reporting requirements. A bill that actually protects students.
Sincerely,
Katy Butler, Michigan high school student
Carson Borbely, Michigan junior high school student

Don’t let those who are killing you, occupy your wallet and your table.
Animal-Ag stooges–exorbitantly paid ex-legislators and staffers, now lobbyists–supporting the inhumane treatment of non-humans by employing lies and manipulation to create hysteria and garner public support; with the goal of demonizing and discrediting others who would challenge the brutal concentration camp system of factory “farms,” have only ONE agenda — personal greed. They forfeited their right to credibility when they sold out to the highest bidder, choosing self interest and obscene profits over the best interests of the public they swore to serve. They vigorously abandoned any semblance of morals in order to facilitate lying, stealing, cheating, torturing and murdering to maintain the endless flow of blood-soaked largesse expanding their own bank accounts, via grateful corporate rapists.
What most of these self-proclaimed “experts” on animal rights actually know about the movement could fit on the head of a pin. They have not bothered to educate themselves because they are in the “business” of animal exploitation; they could care less about non-human OR human suffering, the costs to the environment, public safety or ultimately, the deadly consequences to their own children.
They will tell you that animal rights activists care more about animals than they do people. They consistently set up ridiculous, accusatory, either/or scenarios. [Save the dog, let the child drown.] In their minds, people cannot advocate equally for both humans and non-humans. One wonders if they realize they possess the innate ability to both walk AND talk simultaneously.
The truth is, many animal rights activists have spent lifetimes giving of themselves and their resources to the human beings in their lives; as well as volunteering within their communities to help the poor, hungry, homeless and anyone else in need which crosses their path. This is because individuals possessing genuine compassion and empathy cannot turn it on and off like a faucet, compartmentalizing who is deserving of their support and sympathy, versus who they will unceremoniously trash as being unworthy. When one cares deeply about suffering and injustice it naturally flows into every part of their existence. Attempting to correct the outlandishly cruel treatment of non-humans, who have zero ability to advocate for themselves, is simply an extension of that creed of fairness. Individual ethics, morals and striving for an ever higher level of personal enlightenment is often the driving force behind animal rights activism. And those making their fortunes off of the torture and murder of the helpless, have yet to realize that this movement will continue regardless of their highly nefarious tactics in attempting to crush it.
The real “radicals” are the corporations and their lackeys who write legislation [Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act] which muzzles and criminalizes free speech, labeling those distributing pamphlets on public sidewalks, terrorists, and locking them away far longer than actual violent offenders; or who use the FBI to infiltrate vegan potlucks, inventing their own terrorist plots in an attempt to entrap peaceful individuals whose only crime is choosing a non-violent diet/lifestyle.
They will tell you that the animal rights movement is based on extremist ideologies — though nothing could be more “extreme” than the perennial, forced subjugation, torture and murder of sensitive beings. They proclaim the goal of animal rights activists is to completely abolish animal “ownership.” Even though common sense dictates that domesticated animals are here to stay, and it is complete nonsense to believe that the animal rights movement is focused on ridding people of non-human companions.
Animal terrorists take the view that one has the right to “own” other living beings, with all that egregiously implies. By its nature the term imparts tyrannical powers. A license to dominate which disregards the most basic needs, desires and feelings of its victims.
They refuse to conceive of a world where ALL living flesh and blood, regardless of species, are entitled to certain basic rights. The truth is, for those who “get it,” who truly respect non-humans, they already understand it is morally repugnant to view them as property. One “owns” inanimate objects. Furniture, cars, homes. If someone were to say they “owned” their children, they would rightfully invoke the wrath and disgust of most rational people. One is guardian to their children. Non-human members of society should be considered no differently under the law.
Courts appoint guardians–not owners–for minors. Yet, those who are equally as defenseless against exploitation are still at the mercy of barbaric, archaic laws which have been on the books for centuries. Non-humans remain the most maligned, disenfranchised majority of sentient individuals on the planet; flatly dismissed and contemptuously objectified to the point of invisibility on one hand, and yet of crucial importance to man’s very survival on the other. The schizophrenic way in which society views and treats non-humans is a mind-bending, disgraceful abomination.
Among one of the most monumental lies told by Big-Ag to consumers, is that animal profiteers treat their charges [merchandise] well. They claim, “Our No. 1 priority has to be the health and well-being of our animals.” But the flood of undercover videos shot inside animal-ag hellholes bears witness to something quite different. Big-Ag, which claims such stellar respect for animals, has launched a plethora of fascist legislation in several states–so called “ag-gag” laws–which criminalize First Amendment rights, not only for those filming the industry’s rampant abuse, but for those publishing the footage; ample proof that Big-Ag is intent on hiding their criminal behavior and silencing the public’s right to know how their “food” is produced. AR activists have exposed their lies for the sheer propaganda it is; meant to maintain the status quo and continue the uninterrupted flow of mega-profits by any means necessary.
Vodpod videos no longer available.
There is now indisputable proof that “farm” animals are routinely terrorized and brutally assaulted: beaten with pipes, attacked with axes and hatchets, raped with foreign objects, kicked as they scream and moan in agony, hanged by their necks, suffocated as their chests and airways are trampled and compressed, repeatedly slammed against walls and denied the most basic necessities — nutritious food, potable water and clean, adequate living areas. Disease-ridden from diets full of chemical gruel, they are bloated with growth hormones and antibiotics meant to keep them hanging on just until slaughter. These sensitive souls languish in the squalor of cramped, ammonia-soaked, feces-laden spaces littered with the decomposing and maggot-ridden bodies of their family members. The acrid stench from factory farm hellholes carries for miles. The pollution which floods streams, rivers and seeps into aquifers, leaving the lands it flows onto, unusable toxic waste sites, is the reality of intensive animal agriculture which these true purveyors-of-terror try desperately to hide.
Mad cow disease, caused by feeding bovines–strict herbivores–the body parts of other cows, is but one example of how profiteers “care” about non-humans. Decomposing flesh [already on hand in abundance] ground into feed is infinitely cheaper than providing their natural diet of grasses. The Avian and Swine flu outbreaks had similar origins as crowded, filthy conditions and diets incorporating rotting corpses into those animals’ feed has now become standard practice. Mass contamination from E-Coli, Salmonella and Listeria are killing more and more people every year. Profit–not compassion and not ethics–has always been the bottom line and always will be, unless and until the public rejects such a monstrous system of destruction, abuse and disease.
Animal terrorists and the lobbyists/legislators who lie and whore for them in order to continue a never-ending, unbridled assault on non-humans, must at last, be held accountable. If justice will not come from the courts redefining non-humans as sentient beings, deserving of basic legal considerations, then it must come from the public. Consumers must wake up and realize that animal exploiters DO NOT have their best interests at heart. PROFIT is number ONE. People must take back their power and refuse to support industries which are killing humans and our planet via the saccharin promotion of a rapacious, deadly, rampantly diseased, animal-based food supply.
A system so corrupt that it victimizes society from cradle to grave. First by brainwashing and indoctrinating the public into believing the murderous lies that the human body needs dairy [which studies have found leaches calcium from bones and accelerates tumor growth, among numerous other deadly consequences] and flesh products [which put the body into protein overload, causing progressive kidney damage as well as heart disease, cancer and an ever-growing list of life-threatening conditions].
Those who are prematurely sick and dying as a result of animal-based diets are then victimized and scammed a second time; by putting their faith into the standard allopathic treatments utilizing cut, burn and poison. This, when there is solid, scientific, evidence that plant-based diets can completely reverse non-genetic heart disease, many cancers and reverse or ameliorate Type II diabetes.
Those raking in billions of dollars per year, not only in animal agriculture, but animal research, where behemoth taxpayer grants support repetitive, frivolous, inane and often fraudulent “research,” wasting billions of animal lives and killing/maiming millions of humans each year, don’t want the public to know that the majority of the diseases afflicting them can be completely avoided, reversed or greatly lessened by a plant-based diet. For them, the gravy train would be over and the Mercedes parked in the driveway, repossessed; the mansion foreclosed upon.
For those of you who value your lives, if not the rights and lives of non-humans, don’t let those who are killing you, occupy your wallet and your table.
For those of us who have awakened to a higher level of consciousness, we already understand that species bias is as grotesque as every other form of fascist intolerance. Whether one is denying someone’s fundamental rights based on religion, ethnicity, sex, political affiliation, gender, or, as with non-humans, strictly by virtue of the body they possess. It cannot be allowed to continue.
From a strictly physical standpoint, non-human beings should be entitled to EXACTLY the same rights/liberties humans enjoy. [Except for the right to uncontrolled procreation in situations of overpopulation — which should apply equally to humans.]
They deserve the right to live their lives apart from the victimization of man; the liberty of their ‘physical’ bodies to be their own, free from brutalization and murder, and to do with as their physical/biological urges dictate — this means gaining the right to their own natural, innate habits, habitats, lifestyles and NORMAL lifespans; the right to fully enjoy their own existence, their familial connections, their social hierarchies and their highly complex, interpersonal relationships with one another. These are all physical, emotional and psychological ‘rights’ which humans grant themselves. And it is the ultimate in speciesist arrogance to believe non-humans have physical, emotional and psychological needs any LESS than our own. In short, non-humans have a right to exist on their own terms, completely apart from man’s exploitation and to the highest degree possible, given the limitations/responsibilities for those which have already been domesticated.

Much of what was written in the article above is in rebuttal to Big-Ag’s paid stooge, “Charlie” Stenholm. Google his commentary entitled:
STENHOLM: Wrong Approach to Animal Rights
(The Washington Times restricts sharing the article’s content/link)
Wikipedia info on Charles Walter “Charlie” Stenholm:
After leaving Congress, Stenholm became a lobbyist, representing various agricultural interests, including the horse meat industry. In 2006, he was the most visible lobbyist for three foreign-owned horse-slaughter plants in the U.S. that are fighting legislation that would force them to close. Meat from these horses is used as food in some European Union countries, Japan and Mexico, for zoo food, and for medical purposes. Since 2005, Stenholm has been a senior policy advisor and lobbyist with Olsson Frank Weeda, a Washington law and lobbying firm that specializes in representing food, drug, and agriculture interests before material federal agencies.
FULL DISCLOSURE
I am not a paid mouthpiece for the Animal Rights Movement. In fact, unlike Big-Ag and its lobbyists who siphon off billions of our tax dollars, then hypocritically scream about “animal rights extremists lobbying Congress,” I not only don’t make a single dime, but I expend tens of thousands per year to feed, shelter and take care of the basic needs of the non-humans in my life. I am not wealthy, but it IS my money. I don’t steal it from the taxpayers. I don’t ask for donations (though I find nothing wrong with reputable sanctuaries which do). And I certainly don’t give it away to other animal organizations, i.e., PETA, HSUS, etc. in order to enrich people whose goals I find diametrically opposed to the most basic tenets of non-humans’ rights. Such organizations believe they have the right kill; PETA for convenience sake, has exterminated thousands of healthy puppies and kittens and has no aversion to killing wildlife; HSUS supports the mass-murder and species enslavement of Big-Ag, who, ironically believes them to be “extremists” for demanding animals be treated like living creatures and not commodities.
My goal as an activist is not to strip the world of domesticated companion animals as the lying, greed-driven, sociopaths pimping for Earth’s rapists would have the public believe. A planet without my non-human family members is not one I care to inhabit. I strive to devote everyday toward helping the needy, injured and those suffering because I am compelled to do what’s right for those unable to help themselves.
The work is physically hard, financially draining and inevitably, emotionally devastating at times. It is, however, 100% worth it. My companions exist for their own sake and not as an extension of me. And as such, they deserve the same legal protections which human beings enjoy.

BACKGROUND | FROM PETAHalifax County, Virginia, is considering killing coyotes with poison and cruel traps. Poisoning animals is incredibly cruel. Convulsions, vomiting, internal bleeding, and gradual cardiac collapse lead to slow, agonizing deaths! Steel-jaw traps and snares also cause extreme suffering: Victims often endure painful injuries, and some will even chew off their own limbs in frantic attempts to escape. And when nursing mothers are killed, their babies starve to death. Also, these methods are indiscriminate, posing risks to “nontarget” animals as well, including companion animals and protected wildlife!
Please politely urge Halifax County officials to toss cruel coyote-control measures, and instead employ humane deterrent methods such as employing vegetation management and encouraging residents to securely contain trash, to stop feeding wildlife, and to never leave pets or their food unattended outdoors.. And please forward this alert widely! Remind officials that coyotes are loyal, sensitive animals who are merely trying to forage for their families in areas where humans have encroached.

SAMPLE LETTER
To Honorable West and Board of Supervisors,
I was shocked to learn that Halifax County is considering cruel coyote control using traps and poison, both brutal, excruciating, and unnecessary. Coyotes are complex beings, sensitive and loyal and merely foraging for their families to prevent starvation. Traps cause painful injuries, attempted dismemberment, and trauma while poison causes agony, prolonged suffering, and agonizing deaths of convulsions, vomiting, and internal bleeding. Both forms of death cause fear and the terror of being unable to return to their young and indiscriminately cause the same to non-target animals, such as other wildlife and even companion pets.
I am therefore respectfully requesting you discard such cruel plans and instead employ humane, non-lethal methods such as vegetation management and trash control, demanding residents securely contain trash, stop feeding wildlife, and never leave pets or their food unattended outdoors.
All human animals have an obligation to consider the acts to which they subject animals and to empathize with such actions. If you considered yourself in a similar situation, you would certainly object. As such, I urge you to implement the above humane methods instead and spare these coyotes the terror and pain of being brutally poisoned, trapped, and unable to return to their families. Until such a time, I will encourage my friends, family, and online social contacts to visit other destination areas on their vacations.

After a short discussion that allowed for no public comment, the Tucson City Council has decided to leave the fate of elephants Connie and Shaba in the hands of the Reid Park Zoo. This virtually assures that the elephants’ 30-year bond will be shattered when Asian elephant Connie is sent to the San Diego Zoo early next year.
Tucson city council members have received over 16,000 emails opposing the zoo’s plan to separate Connie and Shaba, yet during the city council session the focus was placed on the zoo’s new elephant program and not on the welfare of these two elephants.
Connie and Shaba have been together at the Reid Park Zoo in Tucson since 1982 when Connie was 15 and Shaba was just 2. They have been deeply bonded since the day they were first brought together.
The zoo plans to send Asian elephant Connie to the San Diego Zoo. It will bring a group of African elephants (a bull and two females with calves) to the Reid Park Zoo from the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, and try to integrate Shaba with them. There is no guarantee that she will integrate with the group; if not, Shaba would be moved to another zoo. There is also a chance that she could be injured during the introduction process; just last week one elephant attacked and killed another elephant at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.
Send a message to Tucson’s mayor and council members. Urge them to re-visit this issue and explore compassionate options that would preserve Connie and Shaba’s lifelong bond, including sending them to a sanctuary. Please be sure to personalize your message as much as possible to make it more effective.

Ask Restaurant Association to Swear Off Glue Traps
BACKGROUND | FROM PETAAlarmingly, the National Restaurant Association is recommending the use of glue traps for rodent control in its “ServSafe Program”—a food-service training course. PETA informed program officials of the extreme cruelty and disease risks inherent in glue traps, but to no avail.
Glue traps are some of the cruelest products on the market, causing immense and prolonged suffering. Panicked rodents often rip themselves to pieces in their frantic struggle to escape the sticky mess. Exhausted and terrified, they die from shock, dehydration, asphyxiation, or blood loss. Death can take more than 24 hours. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Health Canada warn against using glue traps because of the disease risks posed by the many pathogens in the waste of ensnared rodents, who eliminate out of stress and fright. This should be a concern for any food business!
Please urge the National Restaurant Association to join the numerous food businesses that have sworn off glue traps.

To Whom It Concerns,
I have just learned of the National Restaurant Association recommendation of glue traps for rodent control in its “ServSafe Program”, and I am respectfully requesting you cease using such barbaric methods of killing. In and of itself, killing the mice is inherently immoral, but using glue traps to do so compounds the vicious nature of such an extremely painful and fearfully agonizing experience for animals. These animals are further traumatized trying to free themselves, causing skinning, tearing, ripping, and dismemberment, a profoundly agonizing ritual of attempting to escape for hours upon hours; death sometimes can take days. If you had to experience such a barbaric form of torture and prolonged death, would you be willing to justify it?
This also proves medically dangerous to humans considering that, according to the CDC, glue traps create optimal conditions to spread disease. I would hope any food company that shares a core principle of human health and quality of life, such as yours and your training program, would be equally concerned with any disease-spreading forms of rodent control.
It is impossible to contemplate supporting any business that capitalizes on the brutality of animals, and when you utilize such horrendous accessories, you are indeed establishing your complicity and apathy in doing so, and I respectfully request you discontinue using glue traps. Indeed, I hope this letter finds you willing to scrutinize both your own involvement in the intentional exploitation of animals and your desire to therefore protect rather than harm them, and until such a time, I will boycott restaurants and share this information with friends, family, and online social contacts.
Please consider, instead, using humane traps to capture and release mice in an ethical and painless manner. These can be found at hardware stores and local animal rescue groups, who would be willing to assist you.
Thank you for your time and attention to this important issue.

Allow Home-Based Pet Sitting in Gainesville!
Target: The Plan Board of Gainesville, FL, USA
Sponsored by: Bruce Baber
Bruce Baber has been attempting to regain the ability to sit dogs in his home at 1713 NW 7th Ave., Gainesville, FL since April 29th, 2010. A City Code forbids the keeping of animals other than one’s own pets in a residential neighborhood within Gainesville. The City Commission, on July 21st, 2011, voted 4-3 to approve the proposed code change, but there is still opposition, and the matter will have to be approved by the City’s Plan Board, and voted on, once again, by the City Commission. Therefore, it is very important that the City perceives that there is continuing support for Bruce, and thus, support for the dog loving citizens of Gainesville, many of whom would like to similarly serve dogs and their owners, and provide for themselves in this time of extreme economic hardship. Please help Bruce regain the ability to perform his valuable and much needed service and enable others to do so, too. Go to: http://www.savebruce.org/ to get the full story.

Despite knowing about the suffering that goes into every fur-trimmed coat, hat, and bag, Kohl’s has made the cruel decision to continue selling the skins of dead animals in its stores.
Animals on fur farms spend their entire lives confined to cramped, filthy wire cages, and fur farmers use the cheapest and cruelest killing methods available. Foxes, minks, coyotes, and rabbits—and even dogs and cats—are bludgeoned, genitally electrocuted, and often skinned alive for their fur.
One of the best ways that you can help animals who are beaten and tortured for their fur is to tell Kohl’s executives that you’ll boycott the clothing retailer until it stops selling fur. Many of Kohl’s competitors and other top retailers—including Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, Gap Inc., Perry Ellis, Express, Cole Haan, bebe, Wet Seal, Forever 21, and Limited Brands—have stopped selling fur.
Speak out against the killing of animals for their skins. Write to Kohl’s executives now and urge them to dump fur for good.

Tony’s Shelter in Pattaya, Thailand, confines hundreds of dogs to severely crowded pens. The dogs are not separated by age, gender, or health, leading to problems such as food competition and injuries from fighting. During routine visits to the shelter, PETA Asia inspectors documented that sick and injured animals were not given veterinary care.
Investigations revealed that many dogs at the facility suffered from severe mange and that others were extremely emaciated. Several dogs had large open wounds, and one dog suffered from what appeared to be a prolapsed uterus. Investigators also witnessed dogs being castrated with elastic bands. Even though Tony’s Shelter claims to be in desperate need of supplies, medicine that PETA took to the shelter to help alleviate the suffering of animals who were infected with mange was never used.
Confining animals to an environment that can’t meet their physical and psychological needs and providing them with limited exercise and care can lead to kennel stress, a condition in which the physical and mental frustrations of confinement lead to abnormal, neurotic, and even self-destructive behavior. Kennel stress is common among animals in shelters, and the condition is an even bigger issue at Tony’s Shelter because of the sheer number of animals who are kept there.
Wealthy businessperson Surapol “Tony” Sanguancharti-Sorakrai—who owns Tony’s Shelter as well as Tony’s Disco, Tony’s Gym, Tony’s Entertainment Complex, and other businesses—has been unresponsive to PETA Asia’s requests for changes and offers of help. Please use the form below to ask the shelter to immediately improve conditions for the animals who live at the facility. Tony’s Buddhist beliefs are no excuse for allowing animals to continue to suffer and for not providing adequate care to animals.

Occoquan, VA: Anyone who owns a dog knows there may be a time when the dog sees a squirrel or just has a case of wanderlust and may escape the yard. But no one expects their dog to be euthanized within a few short hours of setting out on her own. Especially when missing pet flyers are posted and people are diligently searching for the lost dog.
But that is what happened to Basie, a 17-year old Corgi/Border Collie mix that got out of her yard. The beloved pet would be dead at the hands of the Crosspointe Animal Hospital within 3 hours of leaving her owner’s home.
On November 1st at 12:06, Basies owners took a picture of her while she was outside. Fifteen minutes later, since they often checked on her, the owners discovered she was missing.
Their search turned up nothing until the next day, when all that was left of Basie was her cremated remains. She had been euthanized by the veterinarian at the Crosspointe Animal Hospital in Fairfax Station. An unknown person had found Basie, and apparently thinking she was a stray, took her to the Crosspointe Animal Hospital. She was dropped off at 12:20 p.m., shortly after her owners discovered she was missing. According to newspaper reports, the veterinarian at Crosspointe Animal Hospital did not attempt to locate her owners, or wait for them to claim her, but euthanized her shortly after she was brought in.
Basie was not wearing a collar. Her owners removed it, saying it irritated her neck.
According to Virginia Code § 3.2-6507, a licensed veterinarian may euthanize a dog without the owner’s permission if the dog is injured or sick. WUSA-9 reports: “Crosspoint’s examination report of Basie found several health problems, including respiratory disease and neurologic abnormalities. But it also says she was “alert” and “responsive.” Her owners admit that Basie had some age-related health issues which they were monitoring, however, she was well taken care of and she was not ready to die. She was clean, her nails were clipped, and she recently had a tooth extracted, which should have alerted the veterinarian that she was someone’s pet.
This petition respectfully requests that an investigation be conducted into the procedures used in this case, as well as prior instances by the Crosspointe Animal Hospital veterinarian, and that Virginia code § 3.2-6507 be reviewed and modified so that immediate euthanization of animals by veterinarians without owners consent can only occur if the animal has life-threatening injuries or illnesses. Not because the animal shows signs of old age.

We’re going to show [Chevron] that they can’t come here and create whatever environmental mess they want.
Those were the words of Carlos Minc, Rio de Janeiro state’s environment secretary, in response to Chevron’s oil spill off the coast of Brazil. Anyone familiar with the ongoing battle to bring Chevron to justice in Ecuador knows that the company will do everything it can to protect its profits even at the expense of the planet and human health. Write to Brazilian officials now and urge them to hold Chevron accountable for every drop of oil it spilled into the Atlantic Ocean.
Anyone familiar with the ongoing battle to bring Chevron to justice in Ecuador knows that the company will do everything it can to protect its profits even at the expense of the planet and human health. Brazilian officials are determined to make Chevron pay for the impacts of its reckless business operations. Send key environmental officials in Brazil a message now to let them know you’ve got their back.
It isn’t just Chevron’s response to the spill that has been criticized. Before and after the spill occurred, Chevron showed shockingly little concern about the risks involved. The company reportedly drilled deeper than it was licensed to, and had to borrow sonar equipment to even locate where the leak was occurring. Chevron was completely unprepared for an oil spill – or perhaps I should say, completely unconcerned. Production and profits are all that really matter to Chevron.
No wonder Carlos Minc has also been quoted saying: “We believe the accident could’ve been avoided. There was an environmental crime. [Chevron] hid information and their emergency team took almost 10 days to start acting.”
Brazil’s National Petroleum Agency says more than 110,000 gallons of oil have spilled into the Atlantic Ocean. Write to Carlos Minc and other key Brazilian environmental officials now and urge them to hold Chevron accountable for every last drop.
For a cleaner future.

Air Canada, Stop Shipping Monkeys For Research!
BACKGROUND |FROM FACEBOOK
Primate Products, Inc. is a Miami-based corporation that imports and sells monkeys for use in research and testing. Primate Products is infamous for shocking photographs of injured animals that appeared in 2010.
Recently, in response to a public records request, ARFF received copies of certificates detailing 74 separate shipments by Primate Products between July 2010 and August 2011, totaling 1,818 monkeys.
The records reveal that 40% of the monkeys whom Primate Products shipped out of Florida during the 12 month period were for one company– WIL Research, a contract research laboratory in Ashland, Ohio.

To Whom It Concerns,
I was disappointed to learn that your company/ institution has purchased monkeys for use in experiments from Primate Products, Inc., a Florida-based company with a record of shoddy animal care and reckless decisions that have led to animal suffering. There have been a number of serious incidents that suggest serious problems at Primate Products:
– In July 2009, Primate Products dumped close to 100 owl monkeys that they could not sell at a roadside zoo in Homestead, Florida. Within a week, at least 25 of the monkeys were dead!
– In 2010, disturbing photographs surfaced of monkeys inside Primate Products suffering from horrible wounds and crude surgical mutilations.
– In April 2011, Primate Products was cited by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for leaving monkeys who were still under anesthesia in an enclosure without supervision, and in the hot sun.
Your business with Primate Products is no secret. Poor employee morale at Primate Products has made the company leakier than an old rusty bucket!
Please, do the right thing and permanently sever your ties with Primate Products.
Thank you.

Exotic animals used in traveling circuses in the U.S. are often subjected to horrendous physical and psychological abuse. Their movement is severely restricted for extremely long periods of time, and they are often confined to cages that are barely larger than their own bodies. Rigorous, physically abusive training methods involving electric shocks, beatings, and food deprivation are used to force them to perform tricks that are unnatural and meaningless to them. Fortunately, Rep. Jim Moran of Virginia has introduced H.R. 3359, or the Traveling Exotic Animal Protection Act (TEAPA), a new bill that, if passed, would mean unprecedented improvements for animals used in circuses and other traveling acts.
Recognizing that “traveling circuses are detrimental to animal welfare due to the adverse effects of captivity and transport,” TEAPA seeks to amend the Animal Welfare Act in a manner that promotes the physical and mental health of the animals as well as the safety of both the animals and the public. TEAPA would prohibit exhibitors from forcing animals to perform shortly after being kept in mobile housing, which has been shown to be very detrimental to the physical and mental health of animals.
Ringling Bros. and its parent-company, Feld Entertainment, are misleadingly labeling this important bill as an “attack” on “another American tradition” and spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to oppose it—which is why it is so important that you take a moment now to contact your federal representative about H.R. 3359! You can find your representative’s phone number here. If your representative is already a sponsor of this bill (find out here), please take a moment to thank him or her for making the compassionate decision to support TEAPA (be sure to mention that you are a constituent). If not, let your representative know that you are a constituent and ask him or her to sign on as a co-sponsor of H.R. 3359, the Traveling Exotic Animal Protection Act.

Please Co-Sponsor H.R. 3359, the Traveling Exotic Animal Protection Act
Email:
I am writing to ask you to co-sponsor H.R. 3359—the Traveling Exotic Animal Protection Act (TEAPA)—which was introduced by Rep. Jim Moran of Virginia on November 3, 2011. This important bill would prohibit the transport of any animal for more than 12 hours at a time and require that animals used in performances not be confined to a transport enclosure for more than 12 hours during the 15 days preceding a performance. This would help ensure the physical and psychological health and well-being of exotic animals currently languishing in substandard conditions in traveling circuses. For example, elephants used by Ringling Bros., according to the company’s own documents, are chained for 26 consecutive hours on average—and sometimes even up to 100 hours.
As you may be aware, the TEAPA bill is narrowly tailored to address only the worst cases of physical constraint and psychological torment that exotic animals who are forced to travel and perform face. As TEAPA states, “[I]t is not possible to provide exotic and non-domesticated animals with facilities sufficient to maintain the optimum physical and mental health of the animals because of the suffering caused to the animals by the nature of circuses, in which restriction of movement, separation from natural groupings, restriction of food and water, and physical abuse are prevalent.” Furthermore, experts have clearly shown that long periods of travel in insufficient quarters, harsh training methods, and temporary facilities lead to health and safety problems for both the public and the animals.
H.R. 3359 would provide animals with less stifling confinement, a chance for free exercise, and fewer restrictions on their natural behavior. It would have no impact on zoos, rodeos, or permanent facilities, and removing exotic animals and the inherent abuse they face should have no significantly negative impact on traveling circuses. Many circuses—including Cirque du Soleil, a major competitor of circuses with animal acts—are extremely successful without using exotic animals.
I support H.R. 3359 and strongly urge you to sign on as a co-sponsor of this important bill.
Thank you for your attention to this serious issue.

The others have their ears down in fear. A girl outside reads the words on the truck, then sheds tears…..When we arrive there are chains on the walls. They hang from the ceiling, on the floors, in the stalls.
I am very scared. OH ! THEY SHOCKED MY HEAD. Why, oh Why? Do they want me dead? I remember the good ole’ days at my home down south. I would awake to my owner with a smile on her mouth. Why did she sell me to these big scary men? Does she still love me? Did she back then?
They put chains on my legs and then count to three. I can’t stop thinking that I am no longer free. MY LEGS BROKE OFF! Excruciating pain, unbelievable suffering! My blood has fallen. I will soon be in Heaven; but right now I am in HELL.
Why oh why will nobody help us? They treat us like dirt, like mud, like dust. …. Wait ! The pain stopped. I feel happy. I feel free. For those of you who did this to us: Shame On Thee. Look up to the skies. You will see my new friends, my family, and Me.
