Obama signs law legalizing horse slaughter in the US

November 29, 2011

Last week while you weren’t looking Congress and the president did something the vast majority of Americans oppose. The president signed an omnibus-spending bill approved by Congress that makes it legal to slaughter horses in the United States once again. Polls show more than 70 percent of Americans oppose horse slaughter and few if any eat horse meat. Given the fact we are divided politically by a gap the size of the Grand Canyon, recognize that a 70 percent majority is an unheard of amount of backing.

But wait, it gets worse. The reintroduction of horse slaughter plants in the United States comes with a hefty price tag, much of which goes to line the pockets of people in other countries who own these dens of incalculable abuse. The way it works is that ever since 2005, there has been a section of the Agriculture appropriations bill that de-funds (to wit, bars the expenditure of taxpayers’ dollars on) a program for the USDA to inspect foreign-owned horse plants. Now that the de-funding law has been deleted, supporters of the grisly, completely inhumane process of horse slaughter will go back to lobbying Congress for millions of dollars annually to run the inspection program. Without inspection, it is illegal to transport horsemeat across state lines. Once they succeed, horse slaughter will resume here.

Let’s forget for the moment that candidate Barack Obama in 2008 pledged to keep the ban on horse slaughter permanent (another promise to voters reneged?) Let’s forget, too, that American horses are not bred or raised for consumption. Let’s forget that the few countries where horsemeat is consumed (France, Belgium and Japan among them) are ignoring the outright cruelty to horses that raises the hackles of right-thinking Americans. The simple question is: do we want our tax dollars spent to inspect horses who were slaughtered in incredibly cruel fashion (a bolt through the forehead that doesn’t kill them immediately) so foreign owners of slaughter plants can profit? In the midst of a recession when other crucial programs such as Medicare and education are suffering deep cuts, the answer is a resounding, “no.”

Supporters of horse slaughter say the reintroduction of slaughter plants in the U.S. will create jobs. An article in the Desert Independent in Blythe, Calif., this month noted, “Horse slaughter plants operating until 2007…never created a total of more than 178 jobs.” The kind of jobs they do create are of dubious economic value to the individuals who take them and to the communities where slaughter plants are located.

The Independent quotes Paula Bacon, former mayor of Kaufman, Texas, where a horse slaughter facility operated for years as saying, “Horse slaughter means very few, very low wage jobs, meaning workers and their families overtaxed local resources like the hospitals and government services. This so called business brought in virtually no tax revenues and local governments incurred substantial enforcement costs in trying to regulate these facilities. The standard of living dropped during the time horse slaughter facilities operated. Having a horse slaughter facility drove away good businesses.”

Studies have shown that when slaughter plants are opened in rural areas, violent crime quickly rises. Think about it. Horses are sometimes cut into pieces while still alive and screaming. What kind of person would accept the minimum wage to engage in this horrific behavior? The question answers itself.

Rep. Jim Moran, D-Va., sponsored the de-funding amendment in the House version of the Agriculture Appropriations bill. He said he regrets voting for the overall bill (which did not include the de-funding language) but felt compelled to do so, to keep the government operating. He said the only alternative is to assure passage of a permanent ban on horse slaughter, which he and other compassionate members of Congress are working to do. Let’s wish them success.

They are transportation, our support, our best friends. Have you felt the pain? What about those poor innocent babies you killed as a “good deed” but you have not felt that pain of having your own limbs torn apart! I feel bad for your dog, probably fattening up for your Christmas dinner some day. Then you claim that The colrado shooting in aurora killing 12 innocent people, and injuring 50 plus people. sweetie, you might want to instead check and see if CONGRESS MEMBERS of your own state helped pass it. The president only has so much power, obviously the majority of congress also supported it. It’s honestly probably an issue he could care less about, but it’s obvious with the majority of congress liking the bill that he prob thought to go ahead and pass it, since ya know..congress is suppose to be representatives of what their states want and all..

Jem, if you re-call Obama said in 2008 as he was running for the office of president…”he would keep the ban on slaughtering horses”… and he again, LIED !! When you make promises to the american people, you should keep it.

and do you honestly believe…”he probadly thought to go ahead and pass it since representatives of each state are “suppose to” represent what the people of that state want”…oh please…when we elect someone to that post, they did represent what we the people wanted for our country and somewhere during their time in office, THEY FORGOT WHY THEY WERE PUT THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE !!!!!!!

Terry, I totally “agree” with you….and I would like to know where they come up with the {percentages of people” who are for or against anything our government does. Do they just ask 10 people and if 7 are against the problem…that’s where they get the 70% ? I know I haven’t been asked how I feel on any subject coming up to be voted on….

Obama (if you’re listening) ….You lost my vote a long time ago !!! You might as well know, you will NOT be re-elected in 2012.

GREAT idea about his Facebook page. Just a note to Jem; have you written your representative lately? I do it often. Sanchez has NEVER bothered to respond, Feinstein sends pre-written letters telling YOU how SHE feels and why SHE is doing what SHE feels is right. Not listening to a word or even responding to the actual subject or question asked in the email or fax or letter I sent. Boxers the same way. Tells YOU why. Not responding to the voters concerns or questions. They are not there to vote how THEY feel. They are there to represent us, the people. And I agree with the above, all politicians seem to have forgotten why they are there and stopped listening to us a long time ago.

He passed and got into the government because you lazy americans don’t do your research. If half of you would stop worrying about your jobs, lives, etc. and done extensive research on him and the bullshit he pulls, along with the rest of the government you would realize that this shit happens because YOU let it. YOU all alone control this. So stand up and say something. Do your research and stop being blind sheep! You are being led off a cliff and you cant even open your eyes to see it. how sad.

I don’t agree with the practice of slaughtering horses in any fashion. However, to say that the butchers cut the horses into pieces while they are still alive and screaming is absolutely rediculous. There’s no need to make the issue look any worse than it is, slaughtering horses is bad enough by itself. By stating false information, you only make your position look phony. And if you actually do believe that this truly is the way slaughter houses operate your either have the mental capicity of a turkey or you’ve been brain washed by someone else who doesn’t know what the hell they are talking about.

      • November 30, 2011 4:10 pm

Hey, Tex, ever been undercover in a slaughterhouse? Then you’ll see exactly what we’re bitching about, not to mention the MURDER in and of itself is cruel. Gawd, where the fuck do you people come from. Murder is evil is wrong is cruel is inhumane. Get straight.

If you have seen videos of any slaughterhouse, fur farm, or animal processing facility you would know what happens behind all of those pretty plastic labels you see. The majority of animals are simply “stunned” so they are unable to move. They are fully alive, consious, and can feel what is happening to them. All the while, their skin is removed from their body and then tossed into a pile to die slowly, or are butchered into “cuts”. I suggest you research your topic before you begin to argue.

I don’t see anything wrong with it when done humanely, as in other slaughter houses. Maybe our government should only allow American owned equine slaughter houses. I agree with Chris – too many people can’t sell their horses, now that we have no local slaughter facilities. They can’t give them away; they can’t afford to feed them; and I’ve heard countless stories about people taking them to a secluded area and just turning them loose, like some stray dog. In any enterprise, you can find unscrupulous people, but that doesn’t mean all slaughter is inhumane. Also, just like with any animal, some horses aren’t really usable. Why not use them for food??

With your anti-slauthering campaign you have made a lot of horses having no eat and running around in your wide country. And what about your cows and chicken in your mass productional animal industry – would they have not the same right too. Sorry of my bad english. I agree that a president alone cannot change anything without having the majority of congress members in his back – it´s not because of Obama ! And if an animal – equal what kind of animal – is slaughtered in a human way, it is not bad – you all eat meat.
So better change the methods and the conditions in your slaughter houses for all your animals than argueing with so kiddy arguments.

A horse is a domesticated animal, like a dog, unlike a cow – not saying the slaughter of cows are right, but there is a difference…

But besides that – 70% of population is against it (this is not the case in slaughter of beef/poultry/lamb), so what happened to democracy!!??

Also, America would not be where it is today if it was not for the horse who fought and braved so many wars carrying souldiers to battle – so instead of slautering horses, they should pay tribute to them.

Well I read thru most of these comments and at least one person on here was right. I agree that horses are mostly considered pets. Mine are definitely part of our family. HOWEVER…..they are livestock and not all horses are pets. There are pet goats and pigs and cattle….but guess what? People don’t send their pets to slaughter. Since the close of the slaughter houses, the horse market has crashed. Horse prices are ridiculously low and breeding is pointless. There are tons of horses that are not needed. In our area, hay prices are so high that people can’t afford to feed them and are letting their horses go…seriously…turning them loose to fend for themselves. No point in selling them because they can’t, no one is buying. Can’t feed them so they just let them go. The rescues here are over loaded. It’s a huge problem. People that don’t own horses have no idea what is going on. “Oh the poor horses are getting slaughtered” In my opinion, it’s better then them starving and suffering. In our area, it costs $75 for a ranch call, $100 to humanely euthanize a horse, and another $200 or so to get the horse buried or hauled off. People that can’t afford to feed their horses darn sure can’t afford $375 to put one down. And one last thing….you are totally kidding yourselves if you think keeping the slaughter houses closed here is doing any good. Go to the auction barns. There are still plenty of “killer” trucks parked out there buying up these horses even cheaper now. They pack them in and haul them to Mexico. If you think it’s inhumane….maybe you should check out how it’s done there. At least here it is monitored and there are laws.

Where in the heck is everyone getting this idea that every slaughtered horse will be consumed? It’s not something common to our culture and is not the soul purpose for this law. I’m not sure either where you are getting off saying this is inhumane. Have you people never seen a starving animal before? In case you have not, please, by all means take a look. I bet you’ll think twice about telling me that this animal has a happy life.

@Alexis- Did you have a point, or where you simply telling someone to shut up? They have the right to have whatever opinion they want, even if their opinion is that no one should have an opinion!

@Kylee- Congrats for being fortunate enough to have Mommy and Daddy paying for your hobby your entire life. Maybe if you asked them how much this hobby costs, considered the country’s economic situation, throw in the amount of horses that are let free to fend for themselves and die of starvation or an incredibly painful death from hypothermia, injury or whatever could happen to an animal in the wild that has been raised in domesticity and tell me… what would you do better? You seem to be certain that a turkey sandwich would do a better job.

In fact, this goes to all of you whining about Obama. What would you people do better? You sit and complain and critique every move. You generalize the entire campaign and presidency and yet not one of you has had a better idea to deal with the situation. Of course there have been situations on which the president may have “lied,” “bent the truth,” or even “told a fib,” who hasn’t?! We are all human, including the president. And guess what, we elected him. Just as we have with all of the other presidents we’ve ever had. Not everyone will be pleased with decisions made by this one human being, this will never, ever occur. I agree 100% that each person has the right to his or her opinion — but save yourself some humility: stop slinging around “I hate you’s” and “This is all Obama’s fault,” and back up your statements with facts. It’s simple. Educate yourself. Do your research so you don’t sound like ass.

Think about it; What would you do better?

Maybe him and all the ones that signed these papers need to get off of their high horse and come down to earth for a long while and see the shape the American people are actually in. Don’t go to just the big cities and counties, go to the smaller ones as well. Knock on doors and ask them how long they have been out of work and when their unemployment ran out. Have you had any luck finding a job. No they are to busy now wanting to kill horses for human consumption ( but not theirs). Well you all can hate me if you want, but I totally approve of this bill. I have been riding and working with horses for 18 years. I have grown up watching my uncles send old, extremely poor quality, and/or extremely abused to the point of no return horses to slaughter. Although I don’t totally agree with it I know there is an extreme need for it in this country. There are lots of poor quality horses in this country that are running down the price of quality horses in this country. I work at horse sales in Missouri and Kansas on a weekly basis, and see more perfectly good horses go through the ring bound for slaughter than those that go to good homes or to useful purposes. Horses do get sold on a daily basis bound for slaughter today. The people who are involved in this send large semi trucks overfilled with horses (in dangerous conditions) to mexico and canada for slaughter every day. This is because there is an extreme excess of horses right now in America. There are so many people today who can’t even afford to feed their horses so they are turning them loose to run in public parks and wherever else they go(run out into the highways like deer and get hit by cars). Part of this is because they shut down the slaughter houses a few years ago. Part of it is because of the poor economy. A big part of it is the fact that many people do not practice controlled breeding. Many people have heard the concept of spaying and neutering their pets so they dont reproduce by accident and fill the pounds with stray dogs and cats. This concept is not in practice with horses, because there really is little point to spaying a mare (female horse). The concept should be practiced with studs/ stallions (non-neutered male horses). Many people do not “geld” their studs because they feel it is uncruel to do so or think it is “macho” to own a stud. They also breed poorly bred studs to poorly bred or differently bred mares, not thinking it through whether either party can afford another horse. They do this “just to see what the colt would look like” as I’ve been told so many times. I was raised and taught that owning a stallion is very dangerous (as even the best are unpredictable) and a huge responsibility. For this reason, I will never own a stallion that doesn’t have quality breeding. If I can not responsibly breed that horse, i will geld it. These are some of the reasons I approve of this bill. I feel that it will help the horse economy a great deal. I also feel that it will eliminate a lot of problems with the horse world today. I am a 21 year old who has seen the ins and outs of many parts of the horse world and although I do not agree with horse slaughter completely, I do feel it is very necessary and greatly needed again in this country. I feel it would be a wise choice for congress to pass this bill.

You can hate me if you like but I am 100% for it. I was actually happy and surprised that they brought it back, one of the best things I think Obama has done. We have approximately 30 horses and no I wouldn’t take any of my own to the slaughter house, but i…f you think… When in all of history was there FREE horses? Horses used to be symbol of wealth. Horses were not starved when we did have slaughter they were valuable every horse was worth at least $800 if it was fed. So again the horse market should slowly start to rebuild itself. Hopefully there will no longer be free horses and starved to death horses.

Slaughter is a very necessary evil. Could there be improvements made to how the horses are treated? YES, there are many improvements that could be made to make it more humane. For now I’m just happy that soon horses will be worth about a dollar a pound. No more $200 horses that you can ride. I hope that in the near future that horses will again be worth about $1,000 for the bottom end.

Yes, because breeders of show rabbits just make SO much money off of them… lol… More like us piling in thousands of dollars, all for the welfare and husbandry of the animals we raise and show, because we have a passion for them and enjoy having animals in our lives. Unless you all are vegetarians I do not see how you can argue that horse slaughter should be banned. What about cows, pigs, lambs and chickens? Are they not seeing, feeling, thinking animals as well? I believe it is better that horses or any animal, be put down and used for food for humans or other animals, rather than sit around and starve and rot to death, and be abused and mistreated, because owners can’t even GIVE them away. Horse slaughter, like any animal slaughter, IS sad and it is inhumane, in the methods that are used. I DO agree that they should change the way slaughter houses work and tightly regulate them for more ethical, humane treatment of all meat animals. People are so far removed from where MEAT comes from… They forget a burger used to be on a cow. Instead of putting others down for their opinions, why don’t you channel that energy into changing the way all animals are killed and processed?

Spoken like a true horse trader, all you care about is how much money you can make off their flesh (just like a slaughterhouse). You don’t really care about horses! Slaughterhouses wont cure the ignorance that leads to horse neglect/abuse. And also, it’s proven that if horse slaughter is completely banned, horse theft will almost be eliminated. On behalf of all the horses that can’t speak for themselves, stick that in your feed bucket and eat it !!

You can’t claim to care about horses and be willing to let them starve to death and suffer because no one wants them and they are over populated. It’s very obvious you don’t know the first thing about horses! Some horses are only good as companion animals. Not alot of people want a horse that cannot be ridden. Some horses are just plain mean and can’t even be used for companionship. Horses can be large dangerous animals. Ever been kicked or trampled by one??? Unwanted dogs and cats are put to sleep in gas chambers. Is that your answer to the problem now? It costs $500 or more to put a horse to sleep and bury it. PER HORSE.

Doublet, you misunderstood my comment. I have been around horses my whole life, I care about them. I never said I was willing to let them starve to death and suffer due to someone else’s ignorance. I do agree they are over bred. It’s true that some horses are just mean and not suitable to be ridden, but to use that to justify horse slaughter, is a slim argument. If you own your own farm, it costs nothing to bury your own horse, mine recently passed away and we buried her on our land and five years ago, we had to put a rescue down….I know the cost. $500 must be the cost in your particular area but in mine it’s $100. You shouldn’t have more horses than you can afford to take care of if money is your main concern. The only cure to unwanted dogs and cats being euthanized is responsible pet ownership, which means SPAY and NEUTER your animals.

I know a lot of ranchers that owned horses and took good care of their animals until the economy hit. Then reality set in and they could no longer feed their animals. A horses lifespan is typically 20 years. You probably own a tractor and equipment to bury your horse. Most people do not and renting a backhoe etc is also expensive. There are a lot of people who rent a stall at a riding stable and have no where to keep a horse let alone bury one. Here in the U.S. we find eating horse meat repulsive. I get that. But you also have to understand that other countries find our love of beef repulsive! In reality a slaughterhouse is probably more humane than a horse being taken down and eaten alive by a predator. Horses have been a food source for many species for thousands of years.
Bottom line is that there really is no good alternative for dealing with surplus horses that is economically or environmentally feasible right now. If you euthanize a horse then it cant even be used for dog food because of the chemicals.

I just don’t understand why Obama would Legalize slaughter here. did he even read it or think about the reactions of people? The videos showing slaughter happening make it look like the people enjoy it. I saw a video where someone stabbed the mane, I guess he was trying to get close to the spine. Obama said he would keep slaughter out of the U.S. why would he bring it back?

Obama legalized slaughter here because it is a necessary evil. These animal rights groups will show you the very worst videos of a few bad places to try and get sympathy for their cause. If you do a little background check on PETA and the Humane Society of the United States, you will find that they have millions of dollars, of which very little is actually spent on the care of living breathing animals. HSUS raises enough money to finance animal shelters in every single state, with money to spare, yet it doesn’t operate a single one anywhere. PETA has been caught euthanizing most of the animals left at their shelters. HSUS spends millions on programs that seek to cripple ranchers, farmers, and dairy producers. There is a huge difference between Animal Welfare and Animals Rights. I wholeheartedly believe that Animal Welfare is important and strict laws should be in effect regarding humane treatment of animals. However, animals are animals and they should not be afforded the same rights as people.

I am very tired of hearing “slaughter is a necessary evil.” Horses are not raised in this country for such a purpose. Infact there are thousands of medications and supplements that are given to slaughter bound horses who were all former companions that are not fit for human consumtion and down right dangerous for consumtion. American horsemeat is sold as a very expensive delicacy and probably making alot of people unknowingly ill. The solution is not to inhumanely slaughter our surplus horses and ship them overseas. The solution should be to fix the problem of irresponsible breeding and over breeding. Horses are over bred just like dogs and cats. Horses, dogs, and cats are ALL considered companion animals in America. There are plenty of countries that eat dog and cat meat but we would never slaughter them, so why don’t our horses deserve the same respect. slaughter IS NOT humane euthanasia!

You can not spay female horses like you do cats and dogs. It is major surgery for the mare (risk of losing the animal due to the procedure) and costs upwards of $1200-2400 or more. You will be hard pressed to find any horse owner willing to spend that kind of money on an elective procedure. Gelding is more reasonable starting at $100-$200.

Thank you tonyo954 for reminding those of us who may have forgotten that this country started to go downhill with Pres. Bush. Most people are finding this upsetting because he
#1. Is young. Bush was by no means a spring chicken, which in society’s mind gives them comfort. It provides the illusion that this person may be more experienced, wiser even.
#2. He’s black. As horrible as it is, we have to face facts and realize that this country’s leadership went from one end of the spectrum to another. A southern, white, rich gentlemen from an American family and let’s face it… Daddy’s help to a young, African American man. As much as this country says it’s not racist, it is. We can’t remove the racist tendencies, conscious or otherwise.
#3 This is an incredibly stressful time economically in the country, people are looking for someone to blame. He is quite literally the easiest target.

And my final point… people are just plain stupid. They cannot and will not think of a way to make the situation better. They will simply point fingers and scream, “Hey, you made a mess of this!”

In my opinion, all living creatures have emotion and it’s not fair to put one above the other because of your emotional attachments. all livestock are domesticated and it is no more wrong to eat a ferral cat or dog than a cow or pig. they ALL have personalities and emotions just like we do.

How many people on here that are running their traps about the horse industry and what is good for it actually own a horse or have owned one as an adult? Do you know what goes into raising, training, and caring for one? Or are you one of those city slickers who wouldn’t know a cantle from a swell?

Until you have actually lived the life with horses, don’t speak. Anyone can fabricate reports and make things appear in their favor. I personally have been in the horse AND CATTLE business all my life. I know what closing the slaughter houses has done to the horse industry. You have no clue what you are talking about. Before it was closed down, a high quality well bred horse would go for an excess of 5000.00. Now that same horse is luck to go for 500.00. You can scream now that it is all about the money. THAT IS BUSINESS! Horses and cattle are a business. They are not all used for pets. The biggest majority have a job. On every ranch and show barn in America, the animals have to earn their keep. If they can’t, they are relocated to another job. When they can’t do that job, then they go to a slaughter house and become dog food, cat food, or McDonald’s hamburgers.

Don’t start screaming that McDonald’s doesn’t do that because they do. McDonald’s meat comes from China. To get meat into the US as people products, it only has to be a certain percentage beef. What do you think makes up the other percent? HORSE MEAT!

NOW before you all try to lynch me. There does need to be some rules to an animal going to slaughter. It can not be a physically and mentally healthy horse. If it is nuts, hurt beyond healing, or old to the point of not being able to be ridden, then fine send it to slaughter. That is the only reason I have ever sent a horse to slaughter.

It doesn’t matter if it is legal here or not. Horses are just being trucked to places where it is. Why pay another country and remove that money from the US. If you honestly think horse slaughter only employees under 200 people, then you are crazy. For one plant, it take 250 workers for 2 shifts, it takes 50 – 100 truck drivers depending on the week, sale barns and all their staff to hold the auctions, people who have the horses to sell, feed plants to feed the horses before they are sold, vets to vet check them before they are sold, That right there is over 15000 people across the US minimum. Sounds like a lot of jobs to me. With minimum wage being 7.50 an hour, you are looking at over 4.5 million a week in wages. Now tell me again how slaughter houses are a loss?

It is a necessary part of the circle of life. What’s next? Are you going to try to stop all animals from being put to sleep period?

There are a lot of unethical things that happen in all industries but not allowing for the slaughter of horses was one of the worst. It caused more problems than most of you will ever know. I support Horse slaughter if nothing more than to take care of the unwanted horses that American Tax dollars are being used to take care of. My friends have rescued over 50 horses, many of them are unable to be trained and rehomed because of the conditions they were in beforehand. Half of them were bred for mother’s milk and cannot be trained properly because they are not mentally the same as a horse bred for show or accidentally bred but is super smart.

    • Kristin permalink
      November 30, 2011 11:40 pm

I am 100% in favor of the return of horse slaughter for a few reasons.

First off, cows, sheep and pigs are just as domesticated as cats on dogs. No, they’re not usually companion animals as cats and dogs are, but they are very much domesticated. FYI, here’s the dictionary definition…
1.To adopt or make fit for domestic use or life.
2.a. To train or adapt (an animal or plant) to live in a human environment and be of use to humans.
      b. To introduce and accustom (an animal or plant) into another region; naturalize.

Secondly, there comes a point when it is simply cruel to keep a horse alive. Their bodies are not built to withstand the pressures of aging. Has anyone here ever seen an old horse? It’s painful. Their weight distribution makes it extraordinarily difficult for their bodies to withstand aging without severe issues.

Third, where does everyone think the unusable horses end up? Usually one of these options (with the exception of those fortunate enough to be companions).
They get put in a pasture, forgotten about, and starve to death… good way to go.
They get released on the range to fend for themselves. Did anyone mention that most of the range released horses are missing eyes from bird predation, have severe injuries from range conditions, or are starving because horses are not well adapted to living on the range?…. Yeah, that’s another good way to go.
They got brought around to the back of the barn and shot, for those lucky enough to have a back hoe to bury the animals.

Fourth, there are guidelines and requirements regarding meat quality. Anyone heard of Meat Quality Assurance? This requires that no animal be given meds, drugs or supplements to make them fit to walk on the floor. The animal is required to have gone through adequate withdrawal period from any meds they were given. Otherwise, the meat would not be used… therefore the animal would not be slaughtered because that would not be economically wise.

And lastly, sure there are slaughterhouses that are not run well, occasionally animals suffer. Here’s the thing… that doesn’t happen very often. It is NOT in the best interest of the slaughterhouse to allow undue stress because it hurts the quality of the meat. The animal is shot and killed, bled out, then processed. This is how it works everywhere. The animal doesn’t suffer, and they sure aren’t skinned alive, cut into pieces while they’re conscious or any other such nonsense. Again, there are some cases and some locations where, perhaps, this happens, but the vast majority of the time things go off seamlessly.

I don’t have any desire to eat horse meat, but there is plenty of market for it in this country and as an export. Frankly, this country can use any income and any more jobs we can get. And the last thing we need are more horses getting dumped on the range lands. If nothing else, I’m all for slaughter for the well-being of the horses and to avoid their horrible suffering with age.

Putting on my flame suit now.

    1) Horses cannot be equated to cows, even as work-animals, they are domesticated,therefore horses=cats/dogs;
    2) We don’t slaughter cats/dogs, even when ill, old or crazy – they are at best euthanized and buried, but never killed for meat

If overpopulation is a problem, solve the problem – Why create a whole new issue by re-legalizing horse-slaughter?

The USA is meant to be a “leader on all fronts” and a first world country… governed by a bunch of fools, if you ask me.

There’s a problem…Cows are domesticated too…Domestication means “Relying on humans for food and shelter” and while we do have “wild” animals…they are feral, meaning that they once were domesticated. So your first equation is wrong…Cattle, Chickens, all livestock are domesticated, just like horses…

I’m not defending this so-call legislation…I don’t even believe it’s true…but I think that people need to do more than just read this, and that is to find the actual facts and proof

A horse is onne of the most magicestical creatures out there. They are on a similar emotional level to humans and experience pain, etc similarly to humans. It saddens one to think that a President is so inhumane. Maybe he should spend some time with a horse and see its true being.

I keep telling people they are putting the blame in the wrong place. The bill was a huge omnibus bill that funded the government and had to be passed to avoid a shut-down. There was ONE provision that was in the House version that prohibited the funding of the horsemeat inspectors that was stripped out of the Senate bill and never reinstated before the vote on Nov 17.

Three members of the Conference Committee, Representative Jack Kingston (R-GA), Senator Herb Kohl (D-WI), and Senator Roy Blunt (R-MO), removed it from the final bill. A fourth member of the Conference Committee, Representative Sam Farr (D-CA), was the lone objector. (Please note that all 3 who removed the language are Republicans representing states that want to open horse slaughterhouses.)

We should let these 3 men know how we feel. If you want someone to blame, BLAME THEM because they are the ones directly responsible for this. They willfully and knowingly took the provision out with the express hope that no one would notice until the bill was signed.

It was a 1000+ page bill. It was submitted to a vote and passed on Nov 17. Obama signed it on the 18th. I know I can’t read a 1000 pages in a day. It’s likely the reps were UNAWARE OF THE LAST MINUTE CHANGE because the provision had been in the House bill and it had been in the Senate version until those 3 men took it out. I doubt most of the those voting for it realized the provision had been removed. BTW, sneaky moves like this are used all the time to slip in pork and other “special” riders.

All we need to do is let them know, LOUDLY, that this happened and make them fix it.

@Scott….an educated rational person would have the intelligence to realize that animals do feel pain and suffer and if slaughtered, it should be done as humanely and quickly as possible.

As for humans I couldn’t care about most of them and would rather save an animal instead because animals are not ignorant, selfish, and greedy. Most people in first world countries need a reality check to make them realize what is really important in life. The problem is no one here wants for anything. When it comes to slaughtering any animal it seems many humans don’t really care at all. They don’t care that all animals feel pain and do suffer. If people were not so greedy especially for money maybe they would care more about how animals are slaughtered in slaughter houses and it would be done as humanely as possible, if that can be done. The problem with the first world is that there are too many people that want for nothing. Many need to be literally starved to death or abused to get it through their selfish ignorant brain what is really important in life.

I totally agree! These are (MOSTLY) quality horses being killed, not old and sickly ones. The choice is bad, (the USA need much to change things too!) and then far worse shipping them to Mexico, where the laws and regulations are terrible. It’s a sad case all around. AND why cannot this be done totally humane when “nessisary?” sad…IMO we dont totally need to blame Obama, congress probably felt it better here than elsewhere….
~Since all three U.S. slaughter houses were ordered closed last year, the number of horses being shipped to Mexico has exploded. And it was not Obama, congress voted because shipping the animals and killing them abroad was far MORE inhumane! Research it..

Digust at lack of compassion for these domesticated flight animals that are mostly cherished pets. People uncaring, unaware of the peril in each of these animals’ minds as it meets its demise in a painful and twisted way. These bastards will rot and be tortured in hell when their time comes, that I do believe.

I took in a rescue horse that was slaughter bound and I am thankful every day I go out and see his all knowing eyes and face. He is clearly thankful to me too. We treat him with kindness, respect and honour. That is what being human is all about. Shame on these f*%k ups.

I hate to say it but I totally agree with this. Horses are by definition domesticated livestock as are cows, pigs, sheep and goats. There is a severe over population problem just like with dogs and cats. There are free euthansia clinics all over the country so owners can put down horses they no longer can afford to keep- no questions asked. How many rescues are not chock full of unwanted equines and how many animal welfare inspectors have not seen an increase in starvation cases? I would personally rather see slaughter be legal in the US and be regulated and inspected than have horses trucked to Mexico where they are currently being sent with no regulation and spending days on a truck.
    It is a sad reality.

This is what I’ve been told…In the U.S., people see horses like they do dogs and cats…they’ve been used for a specific purpose in life…Dogs were for hunting, companionship, transportation, ratting, etc. Cats were used for ratting, companionship, etc. Horses have been the main use for transportation. Chickens, Cows, Pigs, Sheep, Goats have been bred and domesticated for consumption…they’re known as beasts of burden for that purpose…

But think about it this way…India doesn’t slaughter cattle, because they consider them sacred… in Europe, they eat horse meat and it’s a delicacy there. Those practicing Islam do not eat pig because they consider the meat and animal “dirty.”

Don’t get me wrong or yell at me for being heartless…Horses are my favorite animals…I could never see myself eating horse meat or fully embracing horse slaughter…However, with there being an overpopulation and a large abuse cases because of other heartless people and people unable to afford to keep them, some times the best thing to do for those abused animals is to end their misery and let them rest in peace. Let people believe in what they want, but it’s not our say to say what to eat and what not to eat…If it were, we’d all be eating McDonald’s and what not, or be completely vegetarian.

Horses are beautiful, intelligent creatures that we ride and groom and take care of (Well, the non-animal abusers at least), and the majority of us hate this damned law. If you go to the PDF of the actual signed bill (H.R. 2112)

    Click to access BILLS-112hr2112rh.pdf

and READ it, you’ll see that in Section 739, the only section in the 80+ pages of the bill that deal with horses, EXPRESSLY FORBIDS the use of federal funds to pay either salaries or expenses of those involved in the inspection of horses destined for slaughter. This defunds USDA inspection, which indirectly makes it illegal to slaughter horses for consumption.

Testimonials From Farm And Slaughterhouse Workers
The following is a selection of quotes from Gail Eisnitz’s groudbreaking work Slaughterhouse: The Shocking Story of Greed, Neglect, and Inhumane Treatment Inside the U.S. Meat Industry
“These hogs get up to the scalding tank, hit the water and start screaming and kicking. Sometimes they thrash so much they kick water out of the tank… Sooner or later they drown. There’s a rotating arm that pushes them under, no chance for them to get out. I’m not sure if they burn to death before they drown, but it takes them a couple of minutes to stop thrashing.”
“I could tell you horror stories… about cattle getting their heads stuck under the gate guards and the only way you can get it out is to cut their heads off while they’re still alive.”
“I’ve seen live animals shackled, hoisted, stuck, and skinned. Too many to count, too many to remember. It’s just a process that’s continually there. I’ve seen shackled beef looking around before they’ve been stuck. I’ve seen hogs [that are supposed to be lying down] on the bleeding conveyor get up after they’ve been stuck. I’ve seen hogs in the scalding tub trying to swim.”
“Hogs get stressed out pretty easy. If you prod them too much they have heart attacks. If you get a hog in a chute that’s had the shit prodded out of him and has a heart attack or refuses to move, you take a meat hook and hook it into his bunghole [anus]. You’re dragging these hogs alive, and a lot of times the meat hook rips out of the bunghole. I’ve seen hams – thighs – completely ripped open. I’ve also seen intestines come out. If the hog collapses near the front of the chute, you shove the meat hook into his cheek and drag him forward.”
“Pigs on the kill floor have come up and nuzzled me like a puppy. Two minutes later I had to kill them – beat them to death with a pipe.”
“Sometimes I grab it [a hog] by the ear and stick it right through the eye. I’m not just taking its eye out, I’ll go all the way to the hilt, right up through the brain, and wiggle the knife.”

1st of all, 70% of Americans in the U.S. don’t object to horse slaughter. #2. The ex-mayor of Kaufman, Texas, Paula Bacon, knows nothing about the horse slaughter industry. It was a position she took to get elected. #3. With all the unwanted horses and the horses that people can’t afford to feed, there needs to be a place to take them. All the so called horror stories are another way to scare people. Buy having slaughter, the price of good horses, that are being sold for riding and showing will go up as the bottom price will go up. #4. Right now, the horses are being slaughtered for human consumption in Mexico and Canada anyway and what the media is not saying, is that horses are still being slaughtered, in the U.S., just not for human consumption. PETA people need to get a life and get their facts straight and not just use scare tactics.

yeah so lets take them to be beaten to death slowly…its not a scare tactic its a fact…look it up. there is no humane way to kill a horse for that matter. you have to chain them because they are so strong or they could get away, break their legs so they cant run is another option. then stick them either in the eye with a sharp metal rod to hit the brain and cause death or cut the throat around the jaw, hang them upside down and let them bleed to death, choking on their own blood. its not a scare tactic, its not some over dramatized occuarance that is how they really would have to kill the animal. i understand if it dies of natural causes make it glue like they did a long time ago, like elmers glue, thats why a picture of a cow is on there. use to make glue from dead horse/cow a long time ago. but to take a healthy animal that is hard to kill to that point its just murder. and you cant slaughter diseased horses,or sick ones because it would contaiminate the meat so your # 3 is totally off key. it would actually take all the perfectly healthy horses from the market. because they cant take wild ones due to no vaccinations and health check ups are not done since birth and strictly maintained over the horses life… dont blame peta, just know before you talk about something please do the research because you just sounded as ignorant as obama…

In order to kill an animal at a slaughter house, they calmly walk the animal into a squeeze chute so it can’t move. Then they shoot it with a captive bullet through the head, into the brain. Instant death. I’ve been to lots of different slaughter houses and seen how they work. It would take far too much time to break their legs, put a rod through their eye or anything else. Squeeze chute, one shot, they’re dead. Then they chain up the legs and bleed them out… once the animal is dead.
And they can slaughter the feral horses just as well as they can slaughter a cow. There are vets on site (and before the animals ever get to the slaughter houses) to be sure that the animal is healthy, then they inspect the meat (every carcass is inspected) post mortem to be sure nothing is wrong.

I agree with the poster below! 100% … No one wishes slaughter on a horse, I love all my horses. There are too many horses in this country because of back yard breeding, unless the people complaining about slaughter can pay for the proper euthanasia of all these unwanted horses and the cost to have them buried then they need to keep quiet! Yes there are other ways to humanly kill a animal, you can shoot it, which won’t cost as much as euthanasia but it MUST be done properly to be humane and the odds of that happening to all the unwanted horses is slim! Then you have to deal with PETA up your butt because of that. I would rather see them slaughtered here in the US then shipped hours or days in trailers to Mexico or Canada.

Just my two cents… plus what they said (hope you don’t mind me copying and pasting your comment below mine!)

“Aren’t humans amazing? They kill wildlife – birds, deer, all kinds of cats, coyotes, beavers, groundhogs, mice and foxes by the million in order to protect their domestic animals and their feed. Then they kill domestic animals by the billion and eat them. This in turn kills people by the million, because eating all those animals leads to degenerative – and fatal – health conditions like heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, and cancer. So then humans spend billions of dollars torturing and killing millions more animals to look for cures for these diseases. Elsewhere, millions of other human beings are being killed by hunger and malnutrition because food they could eat is being used to fatten domestic animals. Meanwhile, few people recognize the absurdity of humans, who kill so easily and violently, and once a year send out cards praying for “Peace on Earth.”~Revised Preface to Old MacDonald’s Factory Farm by C. From the posting, “The president signed an omnibus-spending bill approved by Congress”. This would have been a bill covering numerous government entities along with their funding. For one I doubt it specifically stated anything about slaughtering horses in any shape manner fashion or form. Also had the President vetoed the bill the press would have been all over it in a negative light. Along with that another budget battle would have begun, it’s hard enough as it is to get congress to do anything as they try their best to get a republican in office. I grew up on a farm with over 60 horses and other farm animals. We used to slaughter our own cows 2 pound sledge to the head then blow their throat out and then skin them. Just because we buy meat in a grocery store we think it is somehow sterile. Well it’s not chickens, pigs and cattle to name a few are bread, raised and slaughtered everyday in horrid despicable conditions. Remember Congress passed the bill the President only signed it.

I own horses, anyone who’s done their research know that horse slaughter houses are a necessary evil. People that are against it make up all kinds of horror stories about horse slaughter when in reality it’s not much different than a cattle slaughter house. Banning horse slaughter in the US doesn’t do much good, the horses are then just cruelly shipped for hours and hours even days in trailers to Canada and Mexico where it is still legal, might as when save them the trip and just get it done here. People also fail to realize that there are way too many horses being reproduced that we don’t have the need for or the resources to care for. I have seen horses just simply set loose because the owners could no longer care for them and couldn’t find anywhere to go with them. These loose horses don’t adapt to the wild, they end up in the front seat of a car full of dead passengers that were against horse slaughter. I don’t like the idea of a horse dying but really? What ells do you suppose we do with them? I urge every person who is against horse slaughter to take in an unwanted or an old horse and nurse them until the timing of their natural death. See what that does to your precious money you’re trying to save. This article also fails to point out the millions of lbs of horse meat that is SOLD to other countries by the US, and the number of hungry mouths that feeds in those other less fortunate countries. Please people don’t be so naive and uneducated and still think you have an opinion..

Slaughtering horses is a necessary evil….I hate the thought, but what are you going to do with all the horses that have no where to go? People are turning them loose to fend for themselves. How many of you can take in a rescued horse? Do you have the property or the $ to support one with hay, vet bills, shoeing/trimming. Whether you breed them or not the fact is that they are here and now, and WHO IS going to care for them. If people cannot afford to feed their animals, how are they going to pay for a vet to euth them and have them taken away….you all are unreal. I’m an animal lover but I also realize what is going on in the industry. It is better to humanely slaughter them, then to have them starve, get hit on the road or die of neglect. I can’t say for sure that slaughter houses are horrible places…never been to one…however, I don’t believe the video’s or pictures that are put on TV or newspapers by the animal rights people either….a lot of what you see comes from other countries.

Horses are unfit for any consumtion due to the drugs given that are strickly banned in our meat animals.

  76. November 30, 2011 2:34 pm

    Mr. President Obama,

I will not give you one more penny for your re election or any other candidate you endorse.

Your promise breaking habit has gone too far. The ban on horse slaughter you should not have repealed. So much for pardoning token turkeys on Thanksgiving and dooming horses to the slaughter house. I am truly sad to say that today I am angry at myself for ever having pinched pennies and did without to put you where you are. Never Again! Instead of legalizing horse slaughter in the US you could have used your power to convince the countries of Canada and Mexico whose citizens live here in the millions, to close their horse slaughter plants.

Oh, by the way Betty K. I would like to tell you that most horses that end up on the slaughter block are the by product of a disgusting and cruel industry called horse racing, an activity that breeds horses to get a few good races out of them before they don’t serve their owners anymore and are discarded, some of the rest are rounded up on federal lands that have lived on since the days of the ‘conquest’. They are rounded up and sent to slaughter to make room for cattle, sheep, and other grazing livestock to feed over fat Americans that routinely die or become disabled by heart attacks from heart disease for their fat rich diets. So the next time you say that these creatures must be slaughtered because there are TOO many of them, try instead of supporting organizations that are fighting against industries that abuse animals.

Betty K…never been to a slaughter house? Go to one, I assure you what you see put up by animal rights activists is very real, and IN OUR COUNTRY. Don’t put your head in the sand and blame other countries for being worse. Factory farming is a direct by product of our Congress giving tax breaks to BIG Agro, and thereby killing the small farmer. The US has one of the highest birth rates in the developed world, and a voracious appetite for animal products, the cheaper, the better, pigs kept in crates, where they cannot move, never having grass under their feet, cattle fed a diet of corn and other grains which is not their natural food, also never having grass under their feet, packed in by the thousands mired in their own waste over their legs, calves torn from their mothers at days old to be shut up in wooden or aluminum crates chained at the neck and fed a watery solution of milk products to make them anemic, they suffer from diarrhea and the great majority cannot stand even to be taken to their slaughter. You Betty K are part of the disbelievers that eat your meat in the belief that you have done nothing wrong. I would tie your ass in a slaughterhouse for several days to hear the screams of these animals as they go to their death killed in front of one another. And then a few more days in the factory facilities to see how they are abused and how they suffer.

I agree with a lot of this, but if Peta would not of been so greedy trying to get rid of horse slaughter we probably wouldn’t have horses being skinned alive. They could have set a law saying horses are not to be slaughtered cruelty. They must be killed fast and easy. I am against horse slaughter but the horse economy has been getting worse we don’t have enough food for all of these horses. I am also not happy with the slaughter houses saying take the young, fat, healthy horses for them and leave the old messed up horses for these dumb animal rescues. No offense, but if you knew anything, really who wants and old raggedy horse when you can have a young healthy one. If anyone who is complaining about this eats meat, then your complain holds no merit. Don’t even say horses are (insert whatever reason), because it’s not valid. A horse’s life is no less/more valuable than one of a cow, pig, sheep, bison, deer, chicken, turkey, elk, caribou, moose, or anything else that is consumed daily and considered “normal.” American restaurants have served (imported) horse and donkey for a long time now. This is nothing new, and don’t blame it on Obama. if it were not legal, restaurants would still have it imported. If you are against this and eat meat, then stop eating meat all together. Please realize that if slaughter of horses is not legal in the US, all the unwanted horses do not simply vanish into thin air or get to live happily ever after. They instead suffer the infinitely worse fate of being transported hundreds of miles to either Canada or Mexico, where they can be LEGALLY slaughtered. No matter what condition these rejected horses are in, they are often packed into trucks without food or water for days of travel. Many will not be able to stand or walk at the end of their journey, others suffer grotesque injuries as a result of overcrowding. It is difficult for the US government to ensure proper trucking protocol and humane treatment from state to state, and impossible to regulate welfare of US horses once they are sold across the border. If you think slaughter of horses in the US is disgusting, let’s just take a second to imagine what is like in Mexico, where little to no regulations enforce humane treatment of these animals. Slaughter in the US, with of course the occasional historical exception as reported in the media, is highly regulated and holds some of the world’s highest humane standards.

I am a vet student. It is my future career to limit suffering and look out for animal health/welfare. Seven years ago, before I knew any better, I signed a petition to stop equine slaughter in the States. After researching the topic for several in depth papers, I regret that signature. The welfare of unwanted horses is greatly compromised by substandard trucking to countries where slaughter is legal, and we have no control over what happens to these animals once they leave our country. I am therefore PRO US slaughter of horses, given that regulations enforce high standards of humane treatment, and death with minimal suffering. Until you have been to a US slaughter plant and watched the process, your opinion of how the horses are handled and killed has little value. PETA and other such organizations specialize in bringing minority cases of abuse to popular attention. Whistleblowers have their place but the bigger picture is slaughter of American horses WILL continue to happen, either here or in another country. Let’s make sure it happens as humanely as possible. You owe it to horses and all creatures to get the facts and form an educated opinion.

okay i hate to say this to all those complaining about slaughter houses, what about cows and pigs and chickens and turkeys? okay and another thing for those who never owned a horse in their life..opening up these slaughter houses is good for the horse industry because right now people are breeding horses that are dangerous and cant be tamed. I watched over the last few years since they shut all horse slaughter houses down, horses that were starving from american people!! I watched a horse so thin, and I to this day still have pictures, that couldnt stand up! died the next morning do you know how pissed I am to see that in person! Animal control did NOTHING!! I want one slaughter house open and this is what Ill agree to…horses will not be starved, im sure slaughter houses learned the bigger the horse the more meat the more money, I want grade horses only going through or horses that are worn/torn/junk! that means the amish that run these horses on the roads, horses with injuries that cannot be fixed like a broken leg that absolutely cannot be healed that would have to be put down anyways and Horses that are absolutely dangerous that could kill someone. This will help the good horses value go up so horses can quit selling for cheap prices and that way only people that can truely afford them, can buy them! no more watching people around here starve them and have horses tied to their satellite dish! People that have horses should be required to have shelter and 1 acre per horse, no more of having 15 horses in not even a half acre lot and feeding round bales! I do not care to see horse meat on our market, but whatever thats not my issue, as long as the food will go towards those that are homeless and starving people in america because obama seems to be helping other countries besides our own on homeless people anyway. my issue is the industry and to protect horses. Back in the day they starved horses going through slaughter and I didnt care for that but since poor poor people started buything them and starving them, I never want to see another starving horse again after twice already…. I will only agree on these terms. Fair is Fair! And if anyone wants to see the pictures of that starving horse (the last one I saw) feel free to email me, It was the worse thing a horse lover could ever see and animal control did nothing!!

I stopped reading because 90% of the comments are uneducated replys. Those that agree, I am one of them, horse slaughter is a necessary evil. The horse industry is in crisis and overpopulation because of the poorly bred animals. Did you know that the majority of horses slaughter are unhealthy, unwanted, lesson program/trail horse, or unruly, oh lets not forget the PMU mares and foals.
I am first off a horse lover, I also own horses, work in the industry and show horses. I hate the idea that our horses are slaughtered for human consumption, but I also understand that our country has no strict breeding laws or rules for dogs, cats, horses, etc……if we tightened up and not let just any “backyard breeder” own and breed inferior animals, that would get rid of the crappy people who call themselves breeders and we can have quality horses back.
Do you really think that stopping slaughter in this country is saving America’s horses? Did you forget that Mexico and Canada slaughter also? How about that our horses are just being trailered to another country where there are no laws, no rules or regulations, and killed in unsanitary conditions? Wake up America. Lets put more qualified people inside the 3 houses, people that can make sure the process is done better, that the animals are at least treated humanly in more sanitary conditions, lets get a new “gun” that will work for horses (one that is not used on cows that don’t have necks). Lets have someone who inspects the horses, maybe pull the ones that have a chance to be saved. Oh if you disagree with this, then get your head out of the gutter, go to your local auction house, bid on some animals, or check out the slaughter buyers ring side. Then you can come here and speak your mind.
Over 100,000 horses in this country ever year end up at slaughter or are left to die on their own because of our own human cruelty, we just don’t want them, daughter went to collage parents no longer know what to do with the horse, to old to continue giving riding lessons, just plain mean…….should I go on? I think it is more humane to have the animals go to slaughter then to see them starve to death in some dumbasses backyard or turned loose to die. I would rather have some control here in the States then to ship them thousands of miles away to be treated even worse.

To J Banana- HELLLOOO! I have to give you some kudos you are a student and wrote a heartfelt piece. However, please wake up and see the light. You are bias because you are in vet school. You have been programed to think obviously most recently, that taking a dog from a shelter and using it to experiment for the sake of your vet studies is valid. I am so sorry that you were lied to. You didn’t have to break that dogs leg to put it back together, or open it’s belly to insure you knew how sow it back up. Or kill it, in this “humane” manner you profess when your teacher told you the lesson was over. For your own heart to protect it- I hope that you stop what you are doing and move on to something more honorable in life. Dear Sarah,

I’ll admit I’m loling at the fact your a closet hater and you are worried about the honor of my profession/status of my heart. But I do love to argue so I’ll bite til I’m bored:

I agree that while in an educational system, our thoughts and opinions may be shaped according to what we’ve been taught. However, in my case, my opinions on slaughter come from first hand experience in slaughter plants and a lifetime spent with horses AND food animals. However, you have insisted on using logical fallacies above. In fact I would say it borders on blatant ignorance. You clearly have not visited an AVMA accredited school recently. And I can assure you if I was a “monkey head” I would have never gotten accepted into the first round of the application process. My vet school does not take dogs from shelters and experiment on them. Not even close. We learn anatomy on cadavers, thus eliminating vivisections that were popular teaching methods in the 1800s. We certainly don’t break healthy animals bones to heal them again or cut into perfectly healthy animals for shits and giggles. You are absurd. It’s called a teaching hospital because, like the human world, sick animals are brought in and we learn how to treat them under the instruction of qualified and respected vets. They would be treated anyway, but at vet hospitals, qualified vets teach newbie vets the ropes. The welfare of the patient always comes first. And who knows where you are drawing your mental images of overcrowding from. A lotta talk/digression and not much intelligent argument, ya dig?

Hey… lifetime horse lover here and have been a strict vegetarian for more than a decade. I don’t like it. The thought of one of mine meeting that end would horrify me. BUT I think it’s FAR better to have slaughter here in the US where it can be monitored, controlled, and held to a standard than it is to ship the horses to Canada and Mexico where we have no control over their treatment. Not having slaughter here in the US did NOT stop horses from going to slaughter- they just had to be hauled further before the deed is done, and the conditions they haul in are not your nicely bedded air ride comfy horse trailer. Legalizing slaughter here in the US is the lesser of two evils, I think.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. WE created this problem, as well as the cat and dog overpopulation problem. WE have continued to breed animals that are NOT for consumption as often as we want, because people are selfish!!! The answer to this is to strictly regulate BREEDING. If fixing female horses is expensive, fine, don’t do that, I don’t know anyone who has. But the males can be gelded. Same with cats and dogs. Spay and neuter, punish backyard breeders, take the TIME and maybe use some of this money going into reopening slaughter to come up with new methods of regulating said breeding, as well as giving more funding to rescues and sanctuaries.

To anyone who said that the pain and suffering inside of slaughterhouses is just a scare tactic.. start watching videos and reading first-hand accounts. Chicks in hatcheries are grinded up alive. Dogs and cats are gassed to death like it’s the Holocaust. Chickens are boiled alive. Cows are pushed with bulldozers when they can’t stand anymore. Horses ARE too often cut up while alive, after multiple failed blows to the head with the cattle bolt.

Horses are not bred in high numbers for consumption like other farm animals are. They are bred in high numbers for our own selfish reasons. Your beautiful 3 year old Thoroughbred comes in second one too many times. 7 days later, he’s on someone’s plate. SELFISH.

To those who think this is a great solution and will only be used on old/lame/untrainable horses, you’re in denial.

I am not saying everyone needs to be a vegan, I could never make a suggestion like that, but the slaughter process for ALL animals needs to be made HUMANE, whatever that may take. And again, horses are NOT bred for consumption as other farm animals are. This is what distinguishes them from those other farm animals. We simply dump them for slaughter when it becomes more convenient for us. There is a reason the ban on horse slaughter in the US happened in the first place. Repealing the ban is a HUGE step backwards, and is extremely disheartening.

Yes, we unfortunately are not surprised anymore when our government officials lie to us, but when they are running for office, what choice to we have but to believe what the nominees are saying to us? How are we to know what they will lie about and what they will follow through on? We can’t. We just have to blindly trust. The whole thing is unbelievable.

What is ridiculous is the fact that you would rather these horses that are going to be killed anyway to foreign countries without animal welfare laws! What is ridiculous is that u obviously don’t know the way cows are killed in our industry, which is the same as horses! They are knocked unconscious by the bolt into their brain and then cut and bled out which is when they actually die. The bolt is there so the animal doesn’t feel anything! It is better that out country be able to slaughter horses than send them to these other countries without our laws against cruelty to animals and it is best to have the USDA do their job in making sure that if product is sold that it be a healthy, drug free and good product since it is coming from the United States.

I am majoring in Animal Science and Not to be named, you are absolutely correct! There is someone in the slaughterplants who’s job is to make sure the captive bullet has stunned the animal, so they do not feel death. By the USDA laws, there are hundreds of inspectors making sure each animal is killed humainly. With horse slaughter being put back, horses would be killed just as humainly as well. Plus having horses slaughtered would mean that they do not have to suffer all the stress being shipped to Canada or Mexico to be slaughtered… Well said Lynn DO RESEARCH ON BOTH SIDES!

Also helpful to research the methods of slaughter. Horses are usually rendered senseless by a captive bolt gun (similar to beef cattle). If done correctly, this method leaves the animal unable to feel pain: the brain should be mostly or partially destroyed. Some argue it is more effective at delivering a quick death than lethal injection. However, the brain stem may continue to function even if an animal is cognitively destroyed. This is why animals throats are slit after captive bolting, to quickly drain the body of blood thus causes cardiac arrest and technical death (even if you are brain dead on life support, let’s remember you technically are alive if your heart is beating). Things can go wrong with this process, which is why we need to pressure the government for HIGH QUALITY inspections and HUMANE treatment during ALL stages of slaughter. Including transport which can be the worst and most stressful of it all.

Note that if horses are produced for HUMAN consumption, the USDA will have to allot more money and inspections at meat plants. This did not happen when horses were only processed for dog food, hence animals rights activists and humane officials petitioned for complete shutdown. We do not have to consume horse meat in the US….it will likely be sent to other countries, but the horses will hopefully suffer less in our hands than the awful conditions they face in Mexico.

I also recommend Temple Grandin’s books and insights on this subject 🙂

Anyone who approves of the slaughter of horses should be required to take their children to see how it is done. The horse is a sporting animal. Horses have taken soldiers to war. My neighbor, in her 80’s, told me her father was in the cavalry and the reason he survived was because he had a good horse-quick and responsive. Horses are used for therapy. They are NOT meant for consumption. If you don’t understand, try riding a cow or a pig.

Yes, Rudyard Kipling did call the horse “First Servant”, not “First Dinner”. But what ARE horses bred for in this country? To make money for horse owners who sell them as expensive novelties (“look at the color on this one!”). To be “broke”, not “trained”. To chase calves who will be roped and dragged until bloody. To race and be discarded before they are full grown. To erode hiking trails, spread seeds of invasive plants in national parks, and intimidate non-riders (“Watch ‘eem, ‘es kinda spooky!”). To spend years standing in the hot sun or in dim, decrepit sheds at the local riding stable so some spoiled brat can trot around in the dust on “my little pony”. To be turned loose to starve in the desert when they’re no longer “usable”. So breeders can dry up the last desert rivers by growing hay in fragile riparian areas. So Americans can perpetuate the myth of a West that never existed and cannot be sustained.
If you can’t stand to see them killed, let go of the myth and quit breeding them for slavery.

Animals are animals, cry for one cry for them all otherwise it’s all hypocrisy.
Since we do eat meat and that isn’t likely to change, shouldn’t the focus be on ways we can raise and then slaughter the animals with the most respect and care for the animals that allow us to live (and please no one respond with dribble that humans are meant for veggies only cause that is falsehood. Biologically we need meat or animal byproduct).

Yes I realize we humans are incapable of taking care of ourselves let alone a wild animal and that approximately 90,000 horses are shipped to Mexico or Canada to be slaughtered every year and there are not nearly enough rescue organizations needed, but signing something in order to create a mass genocide because it is considered “humane” is wrong. There is nothing humane about having a god complex and believing in slaughter and benifitting from death it is good in the long run. Oh sure its a lucrative business, but it’s just a quick escape from a failing system. It was poorly thought out to allow the slaughter of horses to decrease popluation and put them “out of their misery” clearly it’s not of great import to devise a plan to alleviate the situation instead of cutting our losses. Obama’s predecessor passed a similar law allowing the sale of wild horses and burros for slaughter. Maybe homeland slaughterhouses are more “humane” than transporting them elsewhere, but maybe horsetrade should have more stringent rules. Those who cannot provide for an animal like a child should not be allowed to own one. Buying a horse should be similar to the adoption of a child; requirements must be met in order to adopt. It’s a shame to see this majestic animal that we once relied on to be tossed away like a piece of refuse and abandoned. Sign the petition, but do not let your actions end there. Protest in as many ways as you can, adopt if you have the means, and band together to create more rescue organizations. These pure animals need us to stop what we have created.

Do you realize how many horses are in the U.S? There are 9.4 million horses and we have enough shelters for unwanted ones to fill up to only 6,000 occupants. What would you rather, we let them starve to death because we can’t take care of them, ship them over borders where God knows what happens to them, or make sure that when they die, they die rightly and for a purpose rather than becoming another sad abuse case that we let happen every day?

As a horse person myself I am THRILLED that this got passed!
It’s not disgusting, it’s a great thing he’s done for the horse world. Would you rather a horse starve to death in a stall, standing in poop up to their knees, covered in flies and suffering or go to a slaughter house? Horse rescues can only take so many horses.
I know it’s hard to understand and fathom especially when you’re not in the horse world but when they closed all the slaughter houses thousands of horses were just being ‘let free’ to try and survive because there was no place for them to go. Also slaughter was still legal in Mexico and Canada so horses had to withstand horribly long hours in the trailer to get to either place and they were lucky if they went to Canada since in Mexico they were slaughtered in the streets as they got off the trailers by people with NO experience in what they were doing. Talk about suffering. Also the price of horses went down the toilet because of the closures. Hundreds of ranches and farms that had amazing breeding programs closed down because horses could be bought for $100! It is a necessary evil just like all the dogs and cats that are euthanized everyday because of overpopulation. If you want to fight for something, then fight for stricter regulations in the slaughter houses etc.!

Again this was a “Omnibus-Spending Bill” which collapsed 12 annual appropriation bills into one, in a Republican controlled Congress. This legislation was passed by the House of Representatives and the Senate. They wrote it discussed it, debated it and finally passed it. So if there is any blame to thrown around, well blame congress not the President. President Obama only signed the legislation and I am quite sure his staff never brought up anything to do with horses or their demise. If citizens of this country are unhappy with the current administration that’s fine, it’s their right. As long as breeders continue to breed at the rate they are and idiots who cannot afford horses continue buying them there will be a large number of horses who cannot be cared for. I live in cincinnat, Ohio. Since the slaughter ban and the economy taking a tumble I have seen more neglect involving horses. I have been called numerous times by the animal shelter to perform services for neglected horses. I ask you, have you ever walked into a barn and seen a horse so thin it cannot stand? It’s apparent it’s been down for weeks due to the large pressure sores on it’s hips and shoulders. I have seen this way too much. I would rather see one die quickly rather than slowly over several weeks. I know people who are taking free horses, packing them on trailers and hauling them to Mexico for slaughter. Is that more humane? Packing more horses and hauling further with no water fir days. Only to be killed in plants in Mexico which I believe have not laws regarding the humane treatment of animals. Now we need to regulate the hauling and killing of all animals to make sure the are treated humanely. Do you all stop and think as your chomping down on your big mac, where and how was this animal raised and cared for. I bet not. If new slaughter plants are to open they should be owned by Americans and follow humane practices. It would also create an export product. Nearly 100% of horse meat is eaten in other countries. The bottom line is it will continue to happen. If we do not allow it here they will be hauled to Mexico or Canada where we cannot enforce any laws in regards to how they are treated. We may as well allow it in the us so we can insure they are treated humanely and have an American owned co running it, and make money from an export which we seem to be running out of exports. After all we manage to run humane facilities that butcher cattle, chickens, and pigs. Those big facities probably need a closer look too. I personally only consume meat I get direct from the farmer. Who does not use confinement systems for raising animals and who takes them to small family owned processing plants who treat the animals with respect and are not rushing through the processes. Please consider all of this before writing your congressman. We need tougher regulations on slaughter houses, but they do need to exist. Or vote with your dollars and buy local and direct from a small family farm.

People will never see eye to eye. I am on the boarder line of horse slaughter. But everyone needs to realize some people see the horses as pets and some people see them as livestock. Would you like to euthanize your horse, dog, cat? I will let you in on something, with my time working with several vets I learned your animal has this chemical inserted and it may be in the heart but it doesn’t kill them right away, it first paralyzes them then it starts shutting the body down, and not the brain first. Humanly euthanize them many say. How many think killing an animal with a chemical that they can feel until they are gone is humane? How many of your vets will admit to this? Very Far and Few.

Training a wild horse can be accomplished I have seen it. But training a wild horse can also end in disaster on either part which I have also seen. People will probably scream at me in several directions. I have seen the natural horsemanship, cowboy, force, fear, ect. But when you come up against a stubborn, unwilling, wild, scared, mean horse and try every tactic in the book and bring in different trainers and the horse still has no sense then what? Put it in your pasture? Let it attack every time someone comes near it? Let it loose into the wild? Many may say euthanize it, but then we run the track of which is more humane a bullet or a chemical?

I had worked with a vet who supported slaughter before it was shut down. We went in undercover to see if the slaughter was as bad as everyone made it out to be. So we traveled to several different slaughter pens to find most places put a bullet in them and it killed them as say a human committing suicide which resulted in instant death. And only one place we went to actually used the bolt through the head which also killed them instantly.

People believe everything they hear, see, or their friends/family tell them. Very, very, very few people actually do the work and go and see what is happening. The fact of the matter is when the kill pens shut down we started having a flooding of horses. Many of you are saying it is not fair they are majestic, beautiful, gods creations. Technically everything is gods creation. Did God not create every plant, animal, and humans? How many people here are crying over the horses and yet they are hunters? How about the innocent deer many people shot over deer season?

It is just like a pool of water, when you fill the pool up you need to regulate the water so it don’t over fill and if you don’t soon there will be a mass of water spilling over.

In the time I worked along side different vets I went to see many rescues. They were so overpopulated and many couldn’t hold the feed bill down. They were turning away horses that needed them. Many were lame, could never be rode, weren’t fit for beginners, were too old to ride, and the rescues couldn’t get rid of them. It was amazing to see just how many struggled to stay above water.

I feel I may be scorned for partially agreeing on the re-open of slaughter. Many people can’t afford to euthanize their horses. But just so people know many cats and dogs are gassed until they die. Here animals have exactly 2 weeks before this happens. And it has to be to approved homes only that they go to. In which 2 weeks is not enough.

I know the dirty things that comes with being a vet. Most won’t say what happens behind doors, and many will fight to try and keep it a secret. But there is a few who will come forward and tell you the truth. I continue to work along side different vets and a lot of them will say that the truth can’t go any farther then your own ears. And then there are some that are not afraid to let the public know. In the past 12 & 1/2 years I have worked along side of 17 veterinarians. Ranging from Extra Large Animals, Large Animals, Small Animals, and Marine. I have seen things that would rock a person to the core.

I leave you all with this piece of advice. Know your facts from your fiction when you start talking. Because if you have no facts there is no grounds to stand on. In some ways the re-opening is a good thing. But in some ways it is not. I personally sit on the boarder line of horse slaughter.

What gets me is, why should I even take time out of my life to vote to put people into office that 1. Lie and 2. Only care about what THEY think will help our country. There are more people in the United States then there are in congress in yet they are the ones who get to make all the rules and pass all the laws. Makes no sense to me. Also why is it that most of the laws past don’t even get run by the people, it is almost disrespectful that we are the ones who campaign for these people, we are the ones who give them power, we are the ones who have to negativity from other countries who hate how us Americans run our state, but it all just ends up coming back to bite us in the ASS and this wouldn’t be the first time this happened, its been happening, history repeats itself and it surprises me that a country so Proud and Smart like ours still can’t seem to get it right. “People should not fear their government, their government should fear the people” that’s how it should be, we have the power of numbers and I really don’t understand why we don’t use it or why they don’t allow us to use it. We are all losing our grasp on this country and it’s really quite sad. God LITERALLY bless America because we sure as hell need it.

Anyone who signs these petitions really has no idea what’s going on here. This article makes it seem like we have another way to control the horse population here in the United States. Oh wait, we do apparently: let’s ship our horses across our borders, outta sight, outta mind. It disgusts me that we could handle these horses humanely, make regulations and make sure they go for a purpose. No we send them over our borders, send mares, babies and the like over without consciousness of what we are in fact doing. All you people need the straight facts and if you want them, actually look beyond the facade of death. Death is not the worst thing that can happen, especially a quick one seems merciful from what I’ve seen happen to unwanted horses. Most of them are starved, set free into wild land because people think they can survive on their own. They die slow deaths you cruel people and then there’s not only that. I’ve seen people abuse their horses or take them out and shoot them themselves. What would you rather, death for a purpose, death that is slow and tormenting, or send them across borders where we have a good idea on how cruel other countries are to these animals? Open up your eyes people! I love horses and plan to be a veterinarian soon and you know what, this is FAR MORE HUMANE than the cruel things humans have come up with for a booming, over population of horses!

Wow, there is so much misinformation on this page it is almost painful! The bill that was signed is only good until September of 2012. The chance that any company would want the financial risk of opening/bulilding a plant that could be closed down in a year is almost nill! This whole thing so far is nothing more than “politics as usual” – from both sides! Sometimes you have to agree to things you don’t like in order to move forward on other things.

The following is from the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP), regarding the recent legislative events. So, for those of you looking for more info, and not just sensationalism and shock value, you can go ahead and read on. The links at the bottom give a lot of excellent, detailed information as well:

From AAEP: In recent days you may have seen news reports regarding horse processing in the U.S. To help you understand what has happened and to provide you with information that may assist you with keeping your clients or colleagues informed, the AAEP has prepared a summary of the status of horse processing in the U.S.

Congress Passes USDA Appropriations Bill – USDA Inspection of Horse Processing Allowed to Resume
A provision that had prohibited USDA funds being used for personnel inspecting the slaughter process at horse processing facilities was not included in the Fiscal Year 2012 Agriculture, Commerce/Justice/Science, and Transportation/Housing and Urban Development Appropriations bills signed into law by President Obama on Nov. 18. The appropriations bill passed the House on a vote of 298-121, while the Senate voted 70-30 in favor of the bill. The bill funds a variety of federal programs and agencies and is not solely a bill addressing horse processing.

What does the passing of this bill mean for horse processing?
It means that USDA can now pay inspectors to inspect horses and meat that may be processed for human consumption at U.S. plants.

This bill does not, however, appropriate any new money to pay for these inspections. The USDA would have to find the money in the funds appropriated in the FY’ 12 bill.

Is there a federal law that has been reversed?
No. There has been no law passed or changed dealing with processing itself. There is no current prohibition on the processing of horses in the U.S. The federal bills introduced in Congress to prohibit this are still before Congress. The only change is that for the past five years the USDA was not allowed to fund the inspection of horses at the plants – even though no plants were open – and now they are should a plant begin operating.

    Will horse processing plants open?
While a plant could open and start processing horses, it should be understood that this appropriations bill is only good until September 30, 2012. In addition, as mentioned above, there are two bills currently in Congress proposing to ban horse processing in the U.S.: H.R. 2966 and S. 1176.

Due to state laws passed in Texas and Illinois, the home of the last plants to process horses in the U.S. in 2007, the processing of horses for human consumption in those states, even with USDA inspections allowed, will not be possible. Horse processing also is banned in California.

Does AAEP support the reopening of processing plants in the U.S?
With challenging economic times continuing to impact the United States, the large number of horses in our country that are considered unwanted and without viable care options remains a tremendous concern. Because of the increased potential for abuse, neglect and abandonment faced by this population of horses combined with the lack of financial resources for their long-term care, the AAEP does not oppose the reopening of processing facilities in the United States provided the facilities meet the following provisions:

    1. Strict oversight of operations by the U.S. Department of Agriculture under the Commercial Transport of Horses to Slaughter Act and the regulations there under, including the presence of and inspections by USDA veterinarians at the facilities.
    2. Horses are euthanized by trained personnel in a humane manner in accordance with the requirements of federal law and guidelines established by the American Veterinary Medical Association.
    3. Transportation to the production facility is conducted according to the law and guidelines established by the USDA.

When other humane options do not exist, the AAEP supports processing as an acceptable form of euthanasia under these controlled conditions.

    Additional Resources:

    History of USDA inspection funding
Since 2007, no federal money has been allowed to be used to inspect horse slaughter facilities in the U.S., as stipulated in the Agricultural Appropriations bill over the past five years. Without U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) inspections, horse processing facilities could not process horses for human consumption because the meat could not be shipped internationally or interstate and a majority of the market for horse meat is overseas. Although this clause had support due to the undesirable idea of horse meat for human consumption in the U.S., many, including the AAEP, believe the ban had “unintended consequences” and this was again emphasized in a June 22, 2011 report issued by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) titled – “Horse Welfare: Action Needed to Address Unintended Consequences from Cessation of Domestic Slaughter.”

Horses are not just animals, meat or livestock. They are companions. They give and have given more than any one person has. Sickens me that people even support this. IF we were to say that slaughter is allowed, who is to say that the death penalty won’t be allowed. Horses are lives too.

This is not at all an unbiased article whatsoever. Yes SOME of the facts are correct, but let’s all think about this; there are hundreds if not thousands of abandoned, starving horses in this country. Why should we let them die a horrible, painful death alone, probably in the cold? This law will eliminate this problem.

    • December 2, 2011 8:13 pm

This law will kill them. I read this horrible news article about a family being kept hostage for weeks without authorities knowing. They ran out of food and were literally starving. I kept thinking it would have been far better for the perps to just kill them and get it over with so that they would not have to be involved in that anymore …

It’s not so simple folks: the slaughter goes on whether the ban is in effect or not. Please read PETA’s stance on this (they support the bill). Though any slaughter is tragic, it seems there is a lot more to it, for example:

The number of horses exported from the U.S. just to Mexico for slaughter (they also go to Canada) increased by 660 percent since the de facto ban. The Government Accounting Office reported in June that almost 138,000 horses were shipped out of the country for slaughter in 2010, compared to the 104,899 horses that were slaughtered domestically in the year before the ban took effect.
There can be no oversight once animals leave the U.S (they suffer in transport AND we know nothing of the conditions in slaughterhouses in Mexico or Canada ).

My god, pls. admit that your articles are about $$ not the actual horses. That is all you talk about throughout your reply. That is why the equines are in the danger of slaughter. All the people that use “slaughter” as a means of horse removal should never own one again. I actually would love to ban them EVER to buy a horse again. When they have the $$ again or when times get better for THEM, they will buy another horse and then get rid of it and make a profit doing so. They are the ones that are in favor of SLAUGHTER. Unfortunately, I have to pay for their horse as well as my own if this ban goes thru – and i DO NOT WANT to pay for a horse to be killed at a terrible place called a slaughterhouse.

NO…. the government puts out programs to try to help them and the people of the United States donate what they can to help these people. We also have programs for Cats and Dogs that are homeless out there instead of putting them on America’s dinner table. We should strive to do the same for Horses….. It was horses that provided transportation to the people years ago before cars. Shouldn’t they be considered historical and protected by law?

No matter what you do, horses are going to be slaugtered somewhere. It is either a quick relatively easy journey to some town in the US or a long painful scary trip to Canada where it is legal. Horses eat a lot… There is simply not enough food to feed them all. Some horses are not safe for people, and this is a better option for them than starving. Some people eat cats and dogs too. But some people also consider cows sacred… If you are against horse slaughter you must be against the slaughter of all animals.. and if you are, I must tell you humans have been eating animals since the beginning. It is not going to stop now.

I have been riding horses for most of my life, but sometimes you have to look at the whole situation… Slaughter houses are necessary. It may not be your favorite idea, but it’s either that or they die slowly in a field because nobody can afford to feed them, or they get loose and are killed by a car or something. Another option is that these horses are sent up to Canada- a long, stressful, scary journey- and are killed there. And you ask why he can be so cruel to horses? We have been slaughtering animals for meat for as long as people have been around… It is not a new thing. and Animals like cows and chickens make wonderful pets and companions too. horses are not being singled out, but when there are more horses than hay to feed them, horse slaughter is necessary.

Sarcastic as this will sound, if the congress voted to de-fund Obamacare, they can vote to de-fund this crap. Start writing the congress members in your state and demand repeal of this law. Not only is it inhumane, it is insulting to those who fight to preserve the horses–especially those on reservations. This is only designed to put money in someone else’s pocket–and whoever it is will probably help fund Obama’s presidential campaign.

People who want to preserve jobs in these facilities do not realize they will go to foreign workers anyway. It will not be Americans that benefit from this law–and for those who want to justify it by saying they will be shipped elsewhere–then that’s up to the owner’s of the horses…Taxpayers should not be funding this slaughter.

To state that horses are stunned with a bolt through their skull and brain and are still fully conscious while being processed is absolutely erroneous. The bolt guns are exactly that…a gun. The only difference is the “bullet” is reused. Would you be conscious if you received a bullet through the middle of your forehead? If you had any medical knowledge, you would know that the movements post-stun are involuntary muscle twitches that happen regardless of consciousness and these animals do not feel pain. The bottom line is, the horse population is too high and these horses are going to die regardless. Would you rather it be done:
    A) Slowly by Mother Nature as these abandoned horses starve in a field (there is a drought in the Southern US and little grass for them)
    B) Hit by a car and injure humans, as many are being turned out and free to roam along highways
    C) In Mexico, where they are now being shipped to uninspected plants where they ARE inhumanely slaughtered alive with machetes (look up horse slaughter in Mexico)
    D) A US inspected facility where it is done humanely with little transport time and reduced stress on these starving, sick, abandoned creatures
Do your research, understand the world is not perfect, and know that US processing plants and the best alternative. Don’t blame Obama, it’s a difficult situation, and he has little actual power anyways.

While I cannot stand Obama myself. Never have. He has just to me seemed like the “cool” one to vote for, and not many voted for the “right” reasons…. I am not against his decision here. I am a horse lover. I own 3 horses myself. And I work on a ranch that deals with rescues on a daily basis. Taking sick, mistreated, malnurished, starving, and un ruley horses, and trying our best to get them the help they need, and try our best to train them, and teach them how to properly interact with humans. I put my whole heart into this, and risk my life around some of the more dangerous horses that come in. None the less, I see no problem with slaughter houses. We eat cows, chickens, turkeys, pigs. And guess what?? YES! They do make wonderful loving pets just the same as horses! I have a chicken that LOVES me, and rides on my shoulder everywhere she can go! My MIL has a few cattle that are her big babies, and crave her attention and love! We have a pig named Wilbur at the ranch that can’t get enough scritches! And turkeys that follow me everywhere, and climb into my lap to sleep and get loved on! These are all just as loving and sweet as horses. BUT, we eat them just the same. The majority of people don’t realize they are no different than horses, or dogs. If raised to be loving pets, they ARE loving pets. And even some of the ones raised as pets get slaughtered and eaten. Fact of life. These horses are being humanely slaughtered, and used for consumption. Rather than being transported to Mexico, where lord knows how they are being slaughtered. I’m tired of seeing starved horses come in. I’m tired of seeing neglected, abused, and completely un ruley wild horses that would rather trample you to DEATH than have anything to do with humans, be let loose, or come in to the ranch for somone else to deal with. These slaughter houses are neccessary for us, and for them. God put animals here for us to USE. He did not specify for us to RIDE, or EAT, or PLAY WITH. They were put here for us to USE. And that here is what we are doing. We are putting these suffering horses, that seemingly have no purpose here, to USE.

It’s nice to see someone who posted something that actually makes sense… I’m right there with you. I’ve been working with and riding horses for most of my life but i still find it necessary and important. I couldn’t do it myself but i’d rather see this than see them starving without a home.

I don’t know why? why do people do this… torture other living beings and then wonder why we’re so screwed? It was really hard to watch the videos but I did — and I don’t eat meat, go to zoos etc, wear leather/fur, buy any products or medical treatments/care/etc. that has used animals for testing… so my only concern is how do you get people to stop living in denial? (as I thought to forward it to people I know so maybe they’d realize how much better off they’d be if they could maybe understand and live differently), but they wouldn’t watch it as they do eat/wear/entertain themselves, etc. at the expense of other earthlings (and the earth), and that’s so sad. Like impossible sometimes to think about why anyone would want to. I don’t know? but thank you.

(just sometimes I start to dread and feel only that blind is blind — and you’re kinda only preaching to the saved – I hope I’m wrong. my best to you…)

Brilliantly said Katherine ! You have spoken so eloquently and gone straight to the heart of the matter. The core reason this world is in such a mess and there is such ghastly evil carried out is that so many humans have an uncanny ability to put very twisted, irrational and unintelligent ‘reasoning’ to justify all sorts of ridiculous, hideous and dark behaviours. I’m not talking here about the obviously brain damaged sickos but actually about the majority of people (tragically).
As you say, how can we wonder why we’re so screwed when we act (or pay others to act) as exploitative torturers and killers. One of my ‘favorite’ twisted justifications is that God has put animals here for us to casually, callously and relentlessly abuse, use and violently murder ! How they insult the creator of all life that they then proclaim a God of Love !?! Do they REALLY think that an infinitely loving God would wish us to cause hideous pain and suffering to trillions of His/Her creation ? That thinking is seriously twisted and just one example of people deluding themselves to justify their dysfunctional behaviour.
I feel your dread and regularly feel massively overwhelmed by the suffering – the way I carry on is to try to send out thoughts of love and light to all those that suffer, human and non-human. I do not love animals more than humans ( as some like to accuse ) – true compassion is equally felt for all that suffer. Love is the only thing that will disperse and neutralize the darkness.
You are setting a wonderful example of how to live a loving life free of cruelty and exploitation. I join you in this and long for others to realize that it is certainly not about us feeling somehow superior (as people often seem to think?) but only and always about stopping the suffering and helping people understand that a simple change in attitude would truly liberate them and make such a wonderful difference in their own lives as well as all other life.
There are so many problems in this world but if we all work together in the spirit of love we can solve anything.
Love to you, to all those that suffer and to all who help them.

The only reason people are bitching about unwanted horses is because they can’t afford them THANKS TO THE CRAPPY ECONOMY. This is sick….horses are noble animals. When was the last time a chicken saved someone in a battle? Or won a race? Killing these animals is a bad idea.

letting them starve is a worse idea

  167. December 6, 2011 11:28 pm

Omg what is wrong with some of you people??? You think by saying that because some cruel “people” abuse, abandon, and neglect their old, sick, or just plain unwanted horses that it justifies SLAUGHTERING them??? whatever happened to humane euthanasia? people also abuse, abandon, and neglect their dogs and cats also… does that mean you think that we should also open up dog and cat slaughter houses??? if you say yes, then you are one sick person… and before you I am NOT a vegan…but if all types of slaughter houses(cow, chicken, pig, etc….) were to be banned then I can say, I would not complain…and if the ban were to be lifted after a few years…yes I would say the same thing as I am today.

I think i would rather see horses quickly killed rather than see them starve in a field somewhere slowly… It goes the same for the other animals as well… And if you have enough money to euthanize all the millions of starving horses, be my guest… You may not realize how expensive it is.. If you can’t afford to feed the horse, maybe you can’t afford to kill and bury it either.

As much as I dislike the idea of horse slaughter, it is a evil we all are gonna deal with. Nobody listens to our voices, our gov’t is gonna do whatever it feels will make them more money, somebody somewhere is gonna make millions off of this bill and there us absolutely nothing a one of us can do about. Best thing to do is for each and every one if us to take the best care of our horses so that they don’t end up in a slaughter house. Face it people the horses going to these places are underfed, malnutritioned, old, and/or crippled. Frankly, I can’t afford or have the time to rescue them all and chances are neither can you.

  170. December 22, 2011 7:30 pm

You all who dont agree with it as fucking stupid there are more horses being set free they trully need a sloughter house in the us at least it will help get us out of debt so fucken smarten up and close your eyes if you dont like it

i have been raised with horses for pretty much my whole life, so obviously i am going to have a bias view.
    but Where is your brain?
The horses that would otherwise have gone a short journey to a slaughter house are now going a long way to Canada to be killed there.
Otherwise, since their owners cannot afford to feed them they sit in a field and slowly starve to death. The economy is in hell- and DO NOT say it was from Obama because- NEWS FLASH- it was already in hell before he came to office… (besides the fact that capitalist economies go through waves of highs and lows so its really not one mans fault, but that is another argument.)
People cannot afford to keep their horses so would you rather they are killed quickly and humanely and become food for people, or would you rather drive by a field on the highway and see an emaciated pony standing there?
Not all slaughter is inhumane… those videos you may have seen are not the normal thing… they were probably some house that was shut down because they were violating regulation. Are you really brainless enough to think they would kill horses in a less humane way than cows or other animals?
Another argument i have seen… the slaughter houses are causing other countries to make a profit…? Well why don’t AMERICAN companies start opening houses in AMERICA so they can help the AMERICAN economy? that’s not really one of my big arguments but i’ve seen it floating around so there are my two cents.
In order to be against horse slaughter you have to be against ALL KINDS OF SLAUGHTER… there is no other way to go about it.

All I have to say is WOW some of the people on here should stop lashing out at people. We are all entitled to our own opinions. And ya’ll have no idea…

MrZero I have not sold my soul and it has nothing to do with money!!! I promise you I make no profit off of my horses they are beloved members of my family. I work to support them.

Sug Rabbit Ranch ummm okay. I don’t make anything off the rabbits it’s a hobby they live in an air conditioned building have large cages that are always clean and are very well cared for. They are pets they all have names and personalities and are allowed to each get out of their cages daily.

….and Hannah you are the worst one on this thread. I have a feeling you are an adolescent and need to mature some before going off on people. Learn to bite your tongue hun!!! I do care about the horses. Trust me money is not a factor in my decisions concerning slaughter. I have been around horses my whole life and not the POS low end trail nags. I have world caliber show horses. They are my pets and family members they rank higher than most people I know. And show me the proof of theft ending? You don;t have any horse theft will continue. Most horses that are stolen are well known. They are VALUABLE. People steal them to try and sale and make a few dollars. I am not nor will I ever be a “horse trader”. Have I ever sold horses YES haven’t most people. If a horse doesn’t work for you if it isn’t going to make you happy every day when you go out to the barn why keep it? Sell it to some one that will love and cherish it like it deserves.

If people who have no business breeding horses would stop breeding for the “cute” babies there wouldn’t be a surplus of unwanted horses. The horses I breed and work with are WORLD CHAMPION or out of world champion sires/dams. If a horse can’t prove it’s worth in a show pen rodeo pen or on a ranch it should NOT reproduce. I understand loving your PET horse but regardless of how sweet it is or how much you love it that isn’t a reason to breed it and produce more unwanted horses. Non-registered horses are non valuable and not in demand what so ever. My horses are very well taken care of and never will be in a slaughter house.

Now all of you can stop lashing out at me. Walk in my shoes, none of ya’ll know me or my situation or morals.

Doesn’t Obama have something BETTER to do…horses??? seriously…guess he hasn’t done enough damage to humans he has to resort to killing animals now??? Its sad the American people are fed crap, treated like crap, lied to.
We have became the most ugliest, meanest, cruelest things on 2 legs.
They don’t care whom they hurt, kill.
It doesn’t matter if they are young or old….our little ones gets molested, old people gets thrown aside like they are a piece of garbage, our servicemen..people could care less about.
No wonder our teens are drug addicts/drunks….what do they have to look forward to, so getting high/drunk they do not pay attention to what is happening to the world around them so long as they get their next fix, in a way I do not blame them…..look around what is it going to be like when they become adults, if they make it that far.
I know Obama did not destroy the country, past presidents did a lot of damage, but he is putting the nail in the coffin, he would rather try to think he is cute by singing on t.v. appealing to the younger generation, this is the only way he became President by the young ignorant ones…I wonder how I would feel knowing this is the way I became President?
