HighestWelfare.Humane.Assured.GoodPractices.Vegetarian. Regenerative.Flexitarian.Lies...

What is the difference between No Welfare, High Welfare, and Highest Welfare when they all require animals to die? Only human comfort, NONE protect the actual animals. The most humane, ethical, and honest Webster-defined "welfare" is NOT exploiting animals - not using, not wearing, not eating, not killing - animals. The only meaningful position is vegan, everything else is just how humans euphemize animals' required suffering and violent deaths: no human exploits animals because they honestly believe that NOT exploiting animals is UNethical or INhumane.

Protest the deaths of three horses during HBO’s filming of Luck: sample messages

Source: Facebook Event

Since the launch of the first season of HBO’s series Luck, we have been openly and publicly disturbed about the depiction of thoroughbred horse racing, which we find to be a cruel and exploitive industry. On February 10, 2012, we posted a Forbes article reporting on the death of not one but 2 horses in the filming of the first season of Luck.

Horse Deaths Won’t Stop Production of HBO’s Luck

http://www.forbes.com/sites/vickeryeckhoff/2012/02/09/horse-deaths-wont-stop-production-of-hbos-luck/

On Tuesday, March 13, 2012, we posted a TMZ article reporting the death of a third horse connected to the filming of the HBO series “Luck”. When that happened, we asked you for calls and letters of protest to HBO.

HBO’S LUCK No Moment of Silence For Dead Horse

http://www.tmz.com/2012/03/13/hbo-luck-horse-death/#.T2LGUxFulmp

On Thursday, March 15, 2012, HBO announced that they had ceased all production on their series Luck.

HBO cancels Luck after third horse dies

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-207_162-57397236/hbo-cancels-luck-after-third-horse-dies/

HBO did the right thing when they cancelled Luck; but, the fact of the matter is that three horses had to die before that happened. In addition, we are concerned that the America Humane Association that is supposed to be overseeing the safety of animals used in film productions, fell down on their responsibility.

Please join Win Animal Rights and Carriage Horse Cruelty in thanking HBO for having cancelled their series while at the same time letting HBO know that the death of even a single animal is unacceptable. We also ask that you contact the American Humane Association to question how they could allow a production that had already led to the death of two race horses, to ultimately lead to the death of a third. If the American Humane Association cannot insure the safety of animals used in filming and entertainment, they should relinquish their watchdog role.

SAMPLE MESSAGE HBO

Chairman & CEO Nelson,

I want to thank HBO for making the ethical decision to cancel the series Luck after a third horse died on location, but I have concerns that it took three deaths to cease production. No horse should ever have to be victim of any exploitative business, which is the benchmark of horse racing. The deaths of the horses was an unnecessary but haunting representation of the horse racing industry.

Thank you for your time.

SAMPLE MESSAGE AMERICAN HUMANE ASSOCIATION

To Whom It Concerns,

Because consumer trust and loyalty is greatly necessary during the current economic climate, it is important for business practices to reflect adherence to honest and compassionate ideals, including a refusal of animal cruelty. As such, I therefore respectfully ask that American Humane Association either secure a reason making the death of three horses acceptable during the filming of Luck or relinquish its animal watchdog moniker and instead become a model of animal compassion. Until such a time, however, I will find it necessary to promote a boycott of all movies sharing the American Humane Association name.

Thank you for your time.

Florida Sheriff Killing Pit Bulls In Defiance Of State Law

March 15, 2012
by

Dante Alighieri | Wikimedia Commons

Pit Sisters Rescue is asking animal advocates to sign the petition they have started on change.org. The petition appeals to Putnam County officials to change their policy of breed discrimination.

Source : Pet Pardons News

Putnam County Florida will hold a stray dog for five days to give an owner time to reclaim it. After that, animals are put up for adoption or euthanized for room; except in the case of Pit Bulls, which are automatically euthanized. The Putnam County Sheriff’s Department posted a note on their Facebook page last night defending their policy of not allowing Pit Bulls to be adopted out of their shelter. However, their policy is in direct opposition to Florida statute 767.14.

The Florida statute clearly states that communities are permitted to make their own regulations regarding problem dogs, but just as clearly states that those regulations cannot be based on breed. For instance, if a dog has a history of being aggressive, the county may impose fines or restrictions such as requiring the dog to be confined. The county cannot, however, make the blanket decision to discriminate against a breed of dog. Such discrimination is termed BSL (Breed Specific Legislation), and it is prohibited by Florida law.

James Cueva, an attorney for the Miami Coalition Against Breed Specific Legislation said that Putnam County is in violation of the state statute and is operating outside of state law.

Jen Watson, with Pit Sisters Rescue in Jacksonville, discovered Putnam County’s policy when she called their animal control to pull a Pit Bull for her rescue. Watson was told that Pit Bulls at the facility are not adopted out. When Watson commented “That has to change.” She was told by a Putnam official that it would never change.

This means that any Pit Bull taken into Putnam County Animal Control is euthanized after the five day stray hold without ever being made available for public adoption or rescue. When an employee there was asked how it’s decided which dogs are bully breeds, she referred the question to the Sheriff’s Department, where the buck was passed from one official to another, until someone at the Putnam Sheriff’s Department finally provided this explanation via email:

We deem dogs which are obviously, to any reasonable person who may see them, Pit Bull terriers.

That method might work if the average reasonable person could actually identify a Pit Bull. However, the website pitbullsontheweb.com demonstrates just how difficult that can be. The mis-identification of breeds is one of the saddest results of breed specific legislation, and the best argument for discontinuing breed discrimination.

The Putnam County facility uses the cruel heartstick method of killing dogs and cats.

An error at the facility recently allowed one particularly docile Pit Bull to squeak through the system and be pulled by a rescue group. The rescue placed the dog in a foster home, but a few days later the Sheriff of Putnam, Jeff Hardy, demanded that the dog be returned to the county shelter.

The rescue set up a meeting with Sheriff Hardy, but when he was a no-show they refused to return the dog. The consequences were devastating. According to one advocate more than 17 bully breed dogs were euthanized on Friday in what may have been a retaliation and show of force. The Sheriff’s department would not verify that number and will only admit to killing five Pit Bulls that day, but 21 dogs that were photographed on Thursday, March 8th were missing from the shelter on Monday, March 12. An inside source said that seventeen of them had been euthanized and four were unaccounted for.

Putnam told rescues and advocates today that they would not allow any more photos to be taken of the bully breeds at the facility, and they have quarantined those dogs to an area that they have covered with a tarp. Rescuers are now restricted from seeing how many dogs are being held, and worry that the dogs under the tarp are not receiving proper ventilation under the Florida sun.

Pit Sisters Rescue is asking animal advocates to sign the petition they have started on change.org. The petition appeals to Putnam County officials to change their policy of breed discrimination.

Urge City of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, to Say ‘No’ to Deer Massacre

March 15, 2012
by

Walter Mains | Wikimedia Commons

SOURCE: PETA

BACKGROUND

The City of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, is reportedly considering allowing bowhunters to kill deer in an attempt to reduce deer populations. Your voice is needed!

Bowhunting is among the cruelest forms of hunting. Bowhunters often spend hours following bloody tracks before finding wounded deer. Many are not found, and their deaths are slow and painful. It can take weeks for them to succumb to their injuries. Families are then torn apart, and young and weak animals starve or die of dehydration.

Please urge Cape Girardeau city officials to take bowhunting off the table—and then forward this alert widely! If deer control is insisted upon, please share these tips.

WHOM TO CONTACT

-The Honorable Harry D. Rediger, Mayor of the City of Cape Girardeau
-Cape Girardeau City Council

Copy and paste this list into your “To” field:

hrediger@cityofcapegirardeau.org; jvoss@cityofcapegirardeau.org; mproffer@cityofcapegirardeau.org; dtracy@cityofcapegirardeau.org; lschneider@cityofcapegirardeau.org; mlanzotti@cityofcapegirardeau.org; kswan@cityofcapegirardeau.org

SAMPLE LETTER

Dear Honorable Rediger and Cape Girardeau City Council Members,

It has come to my attention that the city of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, is reportedly considering allowing bowhunters to kill deer in an attempt to reduce deer populations. Although this hunt are would be inherently cruel based on the premise alone, it is important to recognize it is based on erroneous information.

Please allow me to illustrate a few of these concerns. First, ecologically, populations will fluctuate according to conditions and naturally-occurring food sources; it is the interference of humans that causes imbalance. To blame and slaughter the deer for human encroachment is both irresponsible and unjustified.

Second, killing deer artificially increases food supplies to the remaining deer, the consequence of which is increased reproduction and an ensuing greater deer population. In fact, studies have demonstrated that the continual cycle of seasonal hunting is responsible for a rebound, or larger herd populations, in subsequent years.

Third, this type of mass killing using such a brutal type of slaughter in such a central and visible location would certainly adversely affect both visitation and tourism; it would be financially detrimental to continue with such a cruel and unnecessary killing, and although I do not currently reside in Cape Girardeau, I would be unwilling to consider it, or nearby, as a potential vacation destination if this deer cull continues.

Fourth, bowhunters often spend hours following bloody tracks before finding wounded deer, if they look at all. Many deer are not found, and their deaths are slow and painful. It can take weeks for them to succumb to their injuries. Families are then torn apart, and young and weak animals starve or die of dehydration.

Please instead examine alternative, non-lethal options such as fencing, fertility control, and relocation according to established protocols, which, when using these methods appropriately, have all proven successful in curtailing deer populations.  Please see these tips.

I know your time is limited and I want to thank you for your attention to this urgent matter.

Put turtles and dugongs on the election agenda in QLD

March 15, 2012

Warning: Graphic

Please click on and sign Put turtles and dugongs on the election agenda in QLD

Background | Source: Animals Australia

Turtles and dugongs in far north Queensland are in deep water. Their numbers are dwindling and Queensland law is failing to protect them from brutal slaughter. But the coming QLD election may offer a glimmer of hope for these endangered animals.

Campaigning by Animals Australia and colleague groups has led to a hard-hitting report on ABC’s 7:30, exposing the cruel slaughter of turtles and dugongs for ‘traditional’ hunting and a black market trade in their meat and body parts.

These ‘traditional’ hunts are not only exempt from laws to protect endangered species, but in Queensland are also exempt from laws protecting animals from cruelty — allowing turtles to be carved up whilst still conscious and dugongs to be dragged for many minutes by boat, with their head under water, until they drown.

Following the 7:30 exposé, QLD’s Labor government announced an inquiry. The LNP went further, stating that if in power they would remove the animal cruelty exemptions allowing this cruelty to continue. But while turtles and dugongs remain unprotected, both parties need to know the public wants this stopped. As politicians race to win over voters, the coming Queensland election may be sink or swim for these endangered animals.

Please take a moment before election day (24th March) to send a message to the Labor Party and LNP in QLD calling on them to protect turtles and dugongs from this cruel slaughter.

Message Text

I’m writing to you as a concerned community member to call on you and your party to protect turtles and dugongs from extreme cruelty.

I was appalled to learn that Queensland is the only state that allows turtles and dugongs to be brutally slaughtered, suffering prolonged and painful deaths — if the slaughter is for ‘traditional’ purposes.

Societies the world over are increasingly recognising the fact that culture is no excuse for cruelty. Many indigenous leaders in Queensland should be applauded for their decision to place a moratorium on the slaughter of turtles and dugongs and to protect these endangered animals. The fact the Queensland government is hindering their efforts by allowing these animals to be killed in the cruelest of fashions is appalling.

Animal welfare is fast becoming a critical issue for Australian voters. You have a great opportunity to make Queensland a kinder state. I urge you and your party to make a pre-election guarantee that you will remove the loophole allowing traditional slaughter to be exempt from animal cruelty laws.

Re: Proposed Repeal of Provisions of the Hayden Law, Governing Animal Shelters

Dear Governor Brown:

I write in strong opposition to your proposed repeal of certain provisions of California’s Hayden Law, which provide modest protections to California shelter animals. At a time when other states in the United States are enacting legislation to advance the protection of animals in shelters, California should not be stepping backwards by repealing such legislation.

While I understand that the provisions that are subject to repeal as part of your budget proposal have been suspended since 2009, there is a distinct difference between limited suspension and repeal. With repeal, the provisions will be completely removed from our laws, thereby forever denying shelter animals the chance to share in the future economic recovery of our state. With limited suspension, you achieve the same fiscal savings yet preserve the ability of shelter animals to share in the economic recovery of California that is within our grasp, as you stated most recently in your State of the State speech.

What is at risk in the proposed repeal? Permanent loss of the requirement to provide prompt and necessary veterinary care. Permanent loss of the requirement to hold animals for an extended period to increase opportunities for redemption and adoption. Permanent loss of the requirement to post lost and found lists. And, among other things, permanent loss of the requirement to provide care for animals other than cats and dogs, such as rabbits, hamsters, and other animals commonly kept as pets.

In your Budget Summary, you offer as rationale for the proposed repeal the premise that many of the activities required by these mandates have become “common practice and should not be mandated by the state.” As visitors to most animal shelters in California will tell you, nothing could be further from the truth. Moreover, even if many shelters have adopted Hayden Law principles, many have not. Just as we retain laws against murder even though few people commit murder, we need to retain the Hayden Law even if it is a minority of shelters that ignore principles of basic decency toward animals. As it is, is not possible to contend with any credibility that there has been a complete paradigm shift in animal sheltering in California. Animals continue to die in cages from untreated illness. Basic acts of kindness, such as providing donated blankets to animals in hard, concrete kennels or in extremely cold weather, are routinely and deliberately denied.

The public policy preference of California continues to be favoring life over death, and thus the adoption, rather than killing, of shelter animals. Let our laws continue to reflect this will of the People – do not repeal any provision of the Hayden Law.

Thank you for your consideration and your compassion. If possible, please provide me with a reply outlining your position on this issue.

Very truly yours,

Horse Slaughter Imminent in Tennessee: Tennessee Residents Take Action NOW!

March 14, 2012
by

Nikki | Wikimedia Commons

Tennessee Rep. Frank Nicely is back this session with another effort to smooth the way for a horse slaughterhouse to open in the state. House Bill 3619 just cleared the House of Representatives Agriculture Committee and could be scheduled for a vote by the full House at any time.

Until the committee hearing the bill simply directed the agriculture commissioner to post and keep current statistics and other information required to be collected about equines and to provide that information upon request to the Tennessee Equine Association.

Harmless enough, except that during the committee hearing on March 13, 2012, Nicely introduced amendments under a new declaration that “the General Assembly intends to encourage the location of equine slaughter and processing facilities in Tennessee that meet…requirements”. The new provisions approved by the committee would make it more difficult to challenge issuance of a permit for a horse slaughter facility by requiring a bond equal to 20% of the estimated cost of building the facility or operational costs, if those can be determined.  Venue would be limited to the court where the facility is located and not also where the defendant can be found or does business.

A challenger would be required to pay the slaughter facility’s legal fees and court costs if a court finds the suit was without merit or brought for an “improper purpose” including harassment, delay or interference. If a plaintiff does not prevail ultimately after obtaining an injunction, the plaintiff “is liable for all financial losses the facility suffers” as a result of an injunction halting  operations.

The bill is similar to a Montana law passed in 2009.

WHAT YOU CAN DO | WHOM TO CONTACT

If you live in Tennessee, find your state legislators here. Write or call now and urge them to vote NO on H.B. 3619.

Click HERE  for access to free faxing from your computer.  No fax machine, registering, or credit card required.  Be sure to click the fax confirmation link in your email so your fax delivery will succeed.

SAMPLE MESSAGE

Please vote  NO on H.B. 3619.  I, and the 70% of Americans who do not support horse slaughter, will not consider voting for any congressperson who supports horse slaughter, or transport to horse slaughter,  in any manner; I will only vote for candidates who vote NO on H.B. 3619.

Shut Down WSU Painful Dog Experiments Lab: In Memory of Queenie Cyber Action

March 14, 2012
by

PCRM

Source: Facebook

The WSU Alumni have around-the-world support and not only fund, but are supporting animal torture at WSU. Our weekly Cyber Action event is dedicated to Queenie, a companion animal (dalmation mix) who was turned in to a shelter in Gratiot Co., Michigan, as a stray, only to be sold shortly thereafter to a sadistic vivisector from WSU. This is where Queenie died a miserable, torturous death that no being should have to endure!

I have inserted a link with facts of this case after a FOIA request was obtained by PCRM; if you are not already familiar with this case, please click on the following:  http://pcrm.org/good-medicine/2012/winter2012/queenies-story

We cannot let Queenie’s death be in vain …..

WSU is well-represented in State government. We are going to begin our “Shut Down WSU Painful Dog Experiments Lab Cyber Action” by targeting the WSU Alumni, who are holding seats as our Michigan State Senators and Representatives. Also included are the WSU research administrators.

WSU must be persuaded to abandon the cruel and inhumane animal experiments from which they gain millions of dollars annually. Therefore, it is time to apply systematic and sustained pressure to them, their benefactors, their sponsors, and the WSU community worldwide.

No more time can be wasted; we need to act now by telling these Alumni and Research Administrators to stop supporting animal cruelty at WSU! With an add-on of half the Academic Senate….other half coming next week….

Now let’s blast em’ and get to work on shutting this torture chamber down for good!

Thank you, all who Participate!

SAMPLE LETTER

To Whom It Concerns,

This letter is to inform you that the WSU Alumni and Research Administrators are directly responsible for allowing horrific dog heart failure experimentation to continue in the labs at the WSU, including the imprisonment, torture, maiming, and murdering of innocent shelter dogs.

In turn, as a supporter of this school, you, too, are responsible for this scientific fraud, especially since technologically-advanced alternatives are available.

This is not only unacceptable, but also a scheme, which is used by many vivisectors, to profit greatly by improper use of Federal and Private Funding by pocketing much of the grant money funds for personal gain.  These useless and inhumane experiments have been continuing for 20 years at WSU, with the human heart disease rate only to increase. Unlike humans, heart failure in dogs and many other animals is irreversible.

WSU is allowing former companion dogs to be purchased from Michigan Animal Shelters and are forced to run dozens of treadmill experiments with catheters protruding from their bodies with incisions leaking blood and other bodily fluids, causing pain and distress, with no anesthesia or compassion whatsoever, until they die!

I am sure you are aware of extremely painful and unethical experiments on dogs at WSU, as I add a quote from a well-respected cardiologist: “Felony animal cruelty charges should be brought against Wayne State, and the use of dogs in painful heart experiments should be halted immediately,” says John J. Pippin, M.D., F.A.C.C., a cardiologist and director of academic affairs for PCRM.

Now I urge you to see the truth of this matter, take charge, and stop these atrocities within your educational institution! Everyone who is involved by sponsoring and/or supporting WSU in any way, is culpable and, therefore, I will no longer patronize your establishment.

Please make an ethical decision. Consider withdrawing your support at WSU.

I know your time is limited and I thank you for your attention and consideration to this urgent matter.

Please get involved, the animals need our voice and action. Don’t let them get away with the abuse.

AstraZeneca are a major CURRENT customer and vocal supporter of HLS’s cruel methods of animal torture and scientific fraud, as well as being in the position of huge layoffs over the past few years and financial and legal problems.  So 2012 is the year to really pile on the pressure and get them to ditch HLS!

AstraZeneca even have the audacity to state that no suffering occurs at HLS!  This was their response to the Animal Defenders International’s expose from 2008:

During the time of the expose, AstraZeneca were funding experiments on primates at HLS.

Not only did the breeding farm in Vietnam who supplied the poor animals not meet basic UK animal welfare standards, but the conditions of the animals when housed inside HLS was extremely poor; some monkeys were missing limbs, had skin problems or other infections.  Monkeys routinely escaped from cages, resulting in some being raped and attacked.

SAMPLE LETTER

Dear Sir / Madam,

I am writing to express my concern over your continual support of Huntingdon Life Sciences (HLS). As you have already been made aware, HLS is Europe’s most exposed animal testing laboratory and have been filmed cutting open monkeys while still alive, punching animals in the face, falsifying experimental test data, and flouting regulations on a regular basis.

In late 2008 HLS were exposed yet again, during which time you were personally funding experiments on primates. Not only did the breeding farm in Vietnam not meet basic UK animal welfare standards, but the conditions of the animals when housed inside HLS was extremely poor; some monkeys were missing limbs, had skin problems or other infections. Monkeys routinely escaped from cages, resulting in some being raped and attacked. The monkeys were excessively stressed during procedures, which will undoubtedly affect experimental results. You can see the full report here: http://shac.net/HLS/exposed/2008

During a recent inspection of HLS’ Cambridgeshire facilities, you claimed the animals ‘did not suffer’. As a company that experiments on animal yourselves, you will be well aware that all animal experiments in England are licensed by the UK government – and these licenses are given out upon a judgement of suffering level – from ‘mild’ to ‘substantial’. Therefore, to claim that animals do not suffer inside HLS is absolutely absurd. I would suggest you visit HLS without notice, as I am sure you will witness a very different picture.

As a company that claims to achieve excellence and reliability in drug research, I am surprised to learn that you contract experiments inside a laboratory that has had their license revoked and exposed falsifying test data for clients. I would like to use this opportunity to request that you cease your contracts with this horrendous laboratory and invest in more reliable sources of data research.

I know your time is limited and I thank you for your attention and consideration of this urgent message.

Rottie adopted from a rescue strangled to death. Bloody crime scene. Another dog killed; body not found. Other dogs have disappeared.

BACKGROUND | SOURCE NWF DAILY NEWS

A 22-year-old man was arrested Wednesday and charged with animal cruelty, according to the Walton County Sheriff’s Office.

Anthony Ryan Huenergardt, of Freeport, is accused of strangling a Rottweiler named Bella with his hands or other body part on May 27, according to arrest report.

Investigators said that a witness reported that Huenergardt admitted to suffocating the dog.

The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office arrested Huenergardt Wednesday and booked him into the Okaloosa County Jail, said Mike Morrison, a spokesperson for the Walton County Sheriff’s Office.

He is charged with cruelty to animals, a third-degree felony.

SAMPLE LETTER

Case # 2011CF000478
Defendant: Anthony Huenergardt

Dear Honorable Wells,

I have learned of extremely disturbing and malicious case of animal cruelty in which Mr. Anthony Ryan Huenergardt, case # 2011CF000478,  deliberately caused the suffering and subsequent death of a dog by strangling her to death. I am writing today to encourage you to effectively sentence him to the harshest penalty of animal cruelty; his crime causing unimaginable agony, fear, and death in the dog deserves social justice, not community approval.

When I try to imagine what possible motive animal abusers entertain for subjecting their animal victims to such malicious, heinous acts of brutality, I fail, but I am thankful for a lack of cognitive understanding and rationalization. To voluntarily engage in such malicious behaviour suggests sadistic tendencies, and this Mr. Huenergardt’s actions, causing unmitigated pain and suffering, demonstrates an incontrovertible lack of morality regarding other living beings and a gross disrespect for the law. In fact, a person who shows such a remarkable lack of compassion towards non-human animals has the ability to show such indifference towards human animals. This link between animal and human abuse has been established, and if society excuses Mr. Huenergardt’s criminal behaviour, or agrees to a lesser punishment, we only harm ourselves by unjustly nullifying cruelty as acceptable behaviour.

Please respect the victim by penalizing the guilty; doing so will demonstrate your commitment to justice, responsibility, and integrity, attributes unquestionably necessary in a legal setting: rejecting cruelty by maintaining an unyielding position towards it would be a model for all community members and would serve to characterize this type of behaviour as both impermissible and punishable.

I know your time is limited and I thank you for your attention to this urgent issue.

BACKGROUND

Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney is about to decide what action, if any, to take about mink farming in Ireland. In November 2011 the Minister established a Review Group in his Department to review fur farming. Animal organizations in Ireland made detailed submissions to the Review Group, calling for fur farming to be banned.

There are 5 licensed mink farms operating in the Republic of Ireland. Figures from the Central Statistics Office in Ireland show that 141.812 mink pelts were exported in 2010 (the annual figure for 2011 is not available yet). The type of mink farmed for fur is the American mink. One of the mink farms used to also rear and slaughter foxes for their fur. The types of foxes farmed for fur are silver foxes and arctic foxes. According to the Irish Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine no foxes are being farmed at present. However, fox farming continues to be legal in the Republic of Ireland, with no licensing requirement for the farming of foxes for their fur.

At this moment Minister Simon Coveney awaits the report from the Review Group, after which he will make an announcement on the future of this most shameful industry.

Support the campaign to ban fur farming in Ireland! Send a protest letter today!

With only 5 licensed mink farms in Ireland there is no economical reason to sustain this cruel industry. At the same time there are more than 140.000 ethical reasons to ban fur farming in Ireland. Please ban fur farms! More information: http://www.3dayz.com

Example Letter:

Dear Minister Coveney,

I understand from the “Government Legislation Programme for Summer Session 2011” section B titled “Bills in respect of which heads have been agreed and texts are being drafted” that the Animal Health and Welfare Bill will include a ban on fur farming.

This states that:

“Animal Health and Welfare Bill: To consolidate and update existing legislation in the areas of animal health and welfare, including the repeal of several extant statutes, the responsibility for the welfare of all animals within the Department and to ban fur farming”.

Please ensure that this happens as quickly as possible and that this ban occurs from the end of 2012 if not earlier.

The fur industry is based on animal exploitation and is a violation of their rights to live free from harm, being exploited, or being locked up . I would urge you in your position of Minister of Agriculture to use all of your influence to help stop this now.

I fully support that fur factory farming and the fur trade should be outlawed on the grounds of cruelty to animals and rights violations. Keeping an animal trapped in a small wire mesh cage for his entire life until he is killed by anal electrocution or gassing is not acceptable and should end immediately. Pretending our weak animal welfare laws are appropriate will not ensure this exploitation ceases. Only outlawing fur factory farming and the fur trade will. Please give this matter your full attention. I will look forward to your reply.

Sincerely,

Wearing Pain: Canada Goose’s Fur Policy Is Lame and Self-Serving

March 13, 2012
by

Facebook: Canada Gross

Please see below article for sample letter and contact details to send your protest of Canada Goose’s use of fur, namely coyotes. You can send one letter via webform and one via email.

SOURCE: PSYCHOLOGY TODAY
BY MARC BEKOFF

There is absolutely no reason for most people to wear animals as clothing or trim, and surely there is no reason for the existence of commercial fur farms and companies. Recently, a few people sent me the fur policy for the company Canada Goose and I was surprised, well maybe I wasn’t after all, by how it was filled with self-serving, read money, justifications for their use of coyote fur on some of their products.

Some snippets from Canada Goose’s fur policy include:

“…in many regions of Canada coyotes are considered a pest as they attack livestock, endangered prey species, pets and sometimes even people.

…those who suggest faux fur often don’t take into account the environmental consequences of using a petroleum product for aesthetics only (see below)

…The capture of fur-bearing animals in Canada is strictly regulated by the provincial and territorial government wildlife departments. These regulations specify which types of devices can be used to capture each species. In fact, Canada is the world leader in scientific research to develop the most humane trapping systems possible, and has invested more than $20 million in trap research and development, providing the scientific basis for the Agreement on International Humane Trapping Standards that has been signed by Canada, the European Union and Russia. Only furs taken with methods that meet this international standard may be produced in Canada. Trappers in Canada are licensed and they cannot renew their licenses without taking training courses to learn how to use the new and more humane methods.

…wildlife populations must often be regulated to maintain a balance with available habitat, to protect endangered species, to prevent the spread of disease, as well as to protect property and human life. Overpopulation also leaves coyotes susceptible to disease and parasites. For example, when coyotes overpopulate, they become weaker, allowing diseases and parasites to take hold. A coyote with Sarcoptic Mange (a highly contagious skin disease) will scratch himself raw and suffer for many weeks before he dies. New trapping systems allow these animals to be captured and euthanized much more quickly and humanely.

…Modern foothold traps can restrain animals with little or no injuries.

…Some online videos shown by animal rights activists display coyotes or foxes struggling to free themselves from restraining traps, but this is because they are being approached by a human. Research shows that once these animals know they cannot escape, they generally lie down and wait quietly until they are quickly dispatched when the trapper arrives.”

Canada’s fur industry is horrifically and historically inhumane. In addition, there are a few things to consider: First, verified attacks by coyotes on humans, pets, and endangered species are extremely rare, and weather and disease account for the vast majority of livestock deaths. And, sure some trapped animals lie down and wait to be killed by a trapper because they’re severely injured, in shock, and terrified. Imagine your dog in that situation.

Fur farms and the people who trap and use animals for clothing are purveyors of the most unspeakable horrors even if regulations exist. In the process of becoming a coat or trim, the bones of coyotes and many other animals including fox, chinchilla, or mink go snap, crackle, and pop as they are tortured unrelentingly and unnecessarily.

Let’s return to the idea that fur is green. Fur surely isn’t green despite the past claims of the Fur Council of Canada. They write, “buying a fur coat is the ecologically correct thing to do because fox stoles and mink coats are natural, renewable and sustainable. By contrast, synthetic furs are no more than by-products of the petro-chemical industry. Making a single faux fur coat can chew up 19 litres of petroleum, a non-renewable resource, says the council. Ergo, buying a fur coat is good for the planet.” Of course they don’t consider the horrible lives of the animals they torture.

We can all make more compassionate choices to expand our compassion footprint in who we wear—not what we wear—for animals used for fur are sentient beings not unfeeling objects. Among the easiest things we can do is to stop buying clothing that is made from animals. Doing more for animals is actually pretty simple. For example, an 8-year-old boy humbly reminded me that when we buy something, we’re essentially saying “It’s okay for the store to carry it,” and “It’s okay for the manufacturer to make whatever it is we buy.” Everything we purchase is a vote to make more of it. Let’s stop the use of animals for clothing by refusing to buy and to wear the skins of abused sentient beings. Let’s give thanks to the clothing manufacturers and stores who have stopped offering fur products, and I’m sure the animals who are saved from unnecessary suffering and death would thank us for making more compassionate and ethical choices if they could.

If you wouldn’t allow a dog to be treated like a fur animal, then let’s not treat these other sentient beings as if they’re unfeeling objects. They’re not.

SAMPLE LETTER | COURTESY IDA

Dear CEO Reiss,

All fur does is take away lives. Fur trim – on coats, gloves, hats and shoes – is responsible for so many killings.  Furthermore, the bloody business of making a fur coat is a product of even greater immense pain and suffering.

Animals killed for their fur are obtained in one of two ways: either by trapping or from fur ranches. Animals, including coyotes, caught in leg-hold traps will endure a slow and excruciating death. Some chew off their own leg in an attempt to escape. Others may freeze or bleed to death before the trapper returns. Those who don’t will be strangled, stomped or bludgeoned by the trapper. The traps used not only kill their intended victims, but also injure or kill endangered species, domestic companion animals, and other animals accidentally caught.

Fur ranching, no more humane, is characterized by barren cages, isolation, and environmental deprivation so severe that animals often go insane.

Some department stores and mail order catalogs have ceased carrying  fur coats but continue to perpetuate the pain and suffering of animals by selling items that have fur trim. Do not be fooled by the amount of fur.  Just for a small patch of fur on a coat or glove, an animal’s life is lost.

Please discontinue your unethical and brutal business of all fur and killing coyotes for such; your compassionate decision to sever your ties with fur will bring you in line with many upscale designers and stores who have all made the decision to not do bloody business with fur.

Sincerely,

A Guide To Insulated Winter Jackets That Are Not Made With Down

March 12, 2012
by

Source PETA

As documented in a PETA exposé, geese and ducks are often plucked alive so that their down can be stuffed inside outerwear, bedding, and other products. Once they’re considered no longer profitable to the down feather industry, these birds are thrown into crates for a grueling journey to the slaughterhouse, where they’re hung upside down and killed for their flesh.

Thankfully, many companies are using high-tech vegan materials that are better for both birds and the environment. Here are several that’ll keep you cozy without hurting animals:

PrimaLoft

PrimaLoft offers high-performance insulations and fabrics that are 100 percent vegan. Originally developed for the U.S. Army, it uses a proprietary microfiber structure to help retain warmth so that the body can conserve energy. Fibers just a fraction of the diameter of a human hair form a tight collection of air pockets that trap body heat and keep the cold out. It’s used in the outdoors market as well as for home furnishings and bedding in over 500 brands. The company also recently introduced PrimaLoft Bio insulation made from 100 percent recycled, biodegradable fibers.

Black Diamond, Patagonia, The North Face, and Adidas are among the retailers that offer PrimaLoft.

Plumtech

Plumtech, an exclusive Save The Duck padding, is a synthetic down made from recycled polyester using innovation that’s completely animal-free. It provides outdoor enthusiasts with outerwear that allows easy movement and is durable, light, packable, and machine-washable. It has a high level of breathability, which disperses the excess heat generated during everyday workouts, and can trap an extremely large amount of air, preserving the body’s natural temperature.

Thermal R

Marmot, one of the world’s most highly respected technical apparel and equipment companies, created a unique polyester insulation called Thermal R, engineered to meet various cold-weather needs. This insulation combines multichannel and hollow fibers to provide maximum warmth while it reduces the adverse effects of perspiration, condensation, and humidity. Thermal R is resilient, has an excellent warmth-to-weight ratio, and is highly durable.

Nudown

Down and wool trap air to keep you warm, acting as thermal insulators. That’s why Nudown made the business-savvy decision to skip cruelly derived animal materials and go straight to using air. It offers a line of jackets and vests with built-in inflatable chambers. You simply squeeze an in-pocket pump that forces air into the chambers surrounding your torso, and you can adjust the level of insulation whenever you need to.

3M Thinsulate

3M Thinsulate is a unique insulation that works by trapping air molecules between you and the outside, providing a breathable and moisture-resistant experience, and it’s machine-washable. These synthetic microfibers are far finer than down feathers, so they can trap more air in less space, which naturally makes for better insulation than down. Thinsulate has a plethora of products designed for virtually all weather conditions.

This technology can be found at Spyder, Rossignol, and Carhartt.

Climashield

Climashield is composed of thousands of continuous strands of synthetic fibers in a distinctive interlocking solution. It maintains thermal efficiency in wet and humid conditions, is more cost-effective than down, and retains warmth over time—even after multiple uses. Its strands require minimal to no quilting, which allows products containing it to be less expensive. Its custom-fit insulation can be found in sleeping bags, bedding, outerwear, gloves, and footwear sold around the world.

This technology can be found at Arc’teryx, Eddie Bauer, and Mountain Equipment.

37.5

A great alternative to down was created by 37.5 (formerly known as Cocona), which uses active carbon derived from coconut shells that are blended with recycled polyester. This unique blend increases the surface area of the insulation—allowing it to dry fast, resist odors, absorb heat, and provide a high warmth-to-weight ratio.

This technology can be found at Rossignol, Homeschool Outerwear, and NuSleep Bedding.

Aspen Aerogels

Referred to as “frozen smoke” because it’s so lightweight, Aspen Aerogels insulation was developed in a lab 80 years ago and then reintroduced in 2007, when NASA figured out how to use it to keep instruments warm on a Mars rover. It’s used in running shoes, sleeping pads, snow pants, and spacesuits and is extremely effective as an insulator because the holes in it are only 1/10,000th the diameter of a human hair, blocking almost all airflow.

This technology can be found at OROS Apparel and The North Face.

DuPont Sorona

Since the early 1900s, DuPont Sorona has been revolutionizing the world of fibers and polymers. This bio-based fiber insulator is lightweight, breathable, warm, quick-drying, and resilient. Thirty-seven percent of its polymer is made using annually renewable plant-based ingredients. Its revolutionary Bio-PDO compound turns a formerly chemical process into an eco-efficient biological one, using less energy and fewer greenhouse-gas emissions.

Grado Zero Espace

Grado Zero Espace is an Italian-based company that creates many vegan textiles, including Grado VeganTech Insulation—a natural insulation composed of flowers, biopolymers, and Aerogel. It is oil- and animal-free and is known for maintaining its breathability. It’s also inexpensive and efficient. This technology offers protection against freezing temperatures, heat, and fire, while at the same time providing a high level of comfort.

Monark Fibre

Using fibers from milkweed, a native plant encompassing more than 100 species that grows in abundance in North America, Monark Fibre produces materials that provide insulating power equivalent to down’s. The material is waterproof, buoyant, and extremely lightweight, and it repels water. Milkweed fiber is a natural and eco-friendly material that can be used in a wide variety of products, including jackets, sleeping bags, gloves, bedding, and boots.

This technology can be found at Quartz Co.

Thermolite

Thermolite is a synthetic form of insulation created by the innovative company Invista. This technology provides lightweight warmth and functional insulation with lasting durability. Thermolite is used in a variety of products, including outdoor apparel and sports gear, and it’s engineered to keep you warm while helping to optimize your performance.

Polarguard

Polarguard is a continuous-filament, polyester synthetic fiber that is most commonly used in sleeping bags and outerwear. It is hypoallergenic and mildew-resistant and retains most of its loft and insulating properties when wet. Polarguard 3D is a softer fiber that is similar to down—without the cruelty to animals.

Thermore

Thermore, a producer of vegan thermal insulation for apparel and sleeping, has been on the leading edge of thermal insulation technology and continues to be a pioneer in the development of advanced fibers that help your body maintain its natural warmth. The company produces several thermal insulators, including Thermore Freedom, which consists of countless micro-gaps that move and adapt to your body with every movement—from walking around town to more enthusiastic pursuits in the great outdoors.

This technology can be found at Brooks Brothers, Hugo Boss, and Aspesi.

Ingeo

Ingeo is a unique bio-based material made completely from plants. Its functionality grants a broad assortment of creative innovations like plastics for food and beverage containers and consumer electronics, and it’s a great down alternative for apparel and sleepwear. Ingeo insulation is breathable, quick-drying, UV light–resistant, and hypoallergenic, and it boasts outstanding moisture management.

Bamboo

The industry is now embracing pure bamboo for insulation in quilts, comforters, and pillows. This eco-friendly down alternative is naturally antibacterial, odor-resistant, chemical-free, dust mite–resistant, thermo-regulating, hypoallergenic, and extremely breathable.

This technology can be found at Cozy Earth, My Organic Sleep, and Loomstead.

MicroCloud

MicroCloud offers a wide variety of vegan bedding, including mattresses, quilts, and pillows. This “down-like” alternative is created with synthetic polyester high-tech fibers that provide comfort and superior support of your head, neck, and shoulders. It’s hypoallergenic, machine-washable, and tumble-dryable. MicroCloud achieves an affordable price point without harming birds, and the filling provides greater health benefits than down does.

Flocus

Flocus is a revolutionary textile brand producing insulation made with fibers harvested from kapok pods found on tropical ceiba trees. This insulation is 100 percent sustainable, utilizing a natural alternative without abandoning functionality. Flocus is insulating, lightweight, water-resistant, and fully biodegradable.

What’s So Wrong With Down?

Down feathers are used in clothing and comforters, but for geese and ducks, the down industry’s methods are anything but comfortable. In the cruel industry, the birds are often plucked alive for their down—the soft layer of feathers closest to the skin.

(WARNING GRAPHIC)

And if you think birds used for down don’t die for their feathers, think again. Once their feathers are ripped out, many are paralyzed with fear and are left with gaping wounds—some die as a result of the procedure. But you can help birds suffering in the down industry by refusing to buy items containing down and instead choosing from the plethora of vegan materials above. Send a powerful message to the cruel industry by pledging to be down-free.

Eco-friendly vegan synthetic jackets | One Green Planet

Source: One Green Planet

Spring is almost upon us — you know what that means? All those expensive winter skiing, snowboarding or hiking jackets are now on sale! Before you rush to the nearest store to look for a great season-end deal on a well-insulated winter jacket, stop and think about how you can make your next purchase an ethically conscious one. When it comes to insulated winter jackets, most people instantly think of a down jacket as the highest quality insulation to look for. There are several reasons for this: down has great insulating properties, it’s light and compresses very well, making it easy to roll up and stuff into tight spaces when you don’t need it. But your search for a warm, comfortable and convenient jacket that will get you through your ski trip and the worst days of winter does not have to begin and end with down.

Down is the soft layer of fine feathers from the breast of a goose or duck that is closest to their skin and grows to form quill, but does not have the hard quill shaft found in the outer feathers of birds.  Down acts as a natural thermal vest for birds by trapping air and preventing the loss of body heat. This is also what makes them a very popular filler material in comforters, pillows and jackets. Down is picked from birds after they are slaughtered for meat or foie gras and in some cases, by forcibly restraining the animals while they are still alive. In both cases, the birds involved generally live short, miserable lives and die painful deaths for purposes that are absolutely unnecessary. This is because several synthetic insulation materials have been developed over the years that are far superior than down and won’t leave you looking like the Michelin man.

Here are a few examples:

Primaloft®: This patented synthetic microfiber thermal insulation was originally developed for the U.S. military in the 1980s for use in clothing and sleeping bags. The goal was to develop a material that (unlike down) would not lose its insulation when wet, but would retain the lightness, softness, suppleness and compressibility found in down insulation. This makes jackets lined with Primaloft® insulation water-resistant, lightweight, very soft, highly packable and a lot less bulky than jackets made with down insulation.  Primaloft® is undoubtedly the leading name in the synthetic insulation field, with several big brands using Primaloft® insulation products for their garments. North Face makes a range of jackets with Primaloft® insulation like the men’s Lhotse Primadown Jacket or the women’s Quimby insulated jacket. Patagonia also has an excellent range of jackets with Primaloft®, ranging from the men’s Das Parka to the Women’s Micro Puff Hooded Jacket. In addition, Patagonia uses recycled polyester in their jackets, which is made by weaving polyester fibers with used soda bottles, unusable second quality fabrics and worn out garments. Cloudveil’s Enclosure Hooded Jackets for men and women are also great synthetic options. If you’re looking for some Primaloft® insulation with more style, try the AIRS (women’s) or the LARSON (men’s) by ethical (vegan) fashion powerhouse, Vaute Couture.

Thermal R: This polyester based insulation is the brand Marmot’s proprietary insulation that is used in their garments, sleeping bags and gloves. Thermal R is almost as light as Primaloft®, provides excellent warmth and is very durable. The Men’s Cauldron Hoody and the Women’s Dena Jacket are very good options for the coldest winter conditions, and both come with a relatively reasonable pricetag.

Omni-Heat®: This is Columbia Sportswear’s proprietary brand of thermal insulation, which is advertised as the highest heat retention per gram of synthetic insulation in the industry. Jackets made with this technology are very soft and down-like, but are made out of eco-friendly synthetic materials. Unfortunately, not all Columbia Sportswear Jackets using Omni-Heat are free of animal products. Several use down and feathers. The Lhotse Mountain™ II Parka, The Powder Bowl™ Parka , The Whirlibird Parka and the Shimmer Me Timbers™ Jacket are four men’s Omni-Heat® jackets that are made up of 100% nylon and polyester. The Black Diamond Dash™ Parka, the Prism Ice Parka, the Whirlibird™ Parka and the Kaleidaslope™ Jacket are great women’s synthetic choices.

In addition to the one’s mentioned above, some other synthetic insulation fabrics to look out for include Thermolite (made by the same company that makes Coolmax Polyester), Thermacore Insulation ™ (Burton’s proprietary synthetic insulation) and Coreloft ™ (by Arc’Teryx), which is used in some of their jackets. Whatever you choose; remember that there is an abundance of synthetic, non-down insulation options that can not only meet your specific functional and aesthetic needs, but also your budget.

There is no good reason to continue buying down (or freeze next winter), and now you know why!

Message Text

I write out of concern for Liu Xiaobo, 2010 Nobel Peace Prize recipient, who was charged with “inciting subversion of state power” and given an 11-year prison sentence on December 25, 2009 for co-authoring a proposal for political and legal reform in China.

Liu Xiaobo co-authored “Charter 08,” a proposal for political and legal reform in China. The police took Liu Xiaobo from his home in Beijing on December 8, 2008, two days before the planned launch of Charter 08. Numerous signatories of the charter have been questioned and harassed by Chinese authorities since its launch but only Liu Xiaobo has been charged or tried.

I urge you to release Liu Xiaobo and others imprisoned for dissent immediately and unconditionally and ensure that he is not tortured or otherwise ill-treated while he remains in custody.  Freedom of expression must be protected by the state in China, in line with Chinese constitutional guarantees and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), which China has signed.

I thank you for your attention to these concerns and look forward to your reply.

Urge Windsor, Ontario, to Halt Skunk Killing

March 12, 2012
by

PETA

Please send sample letter or your own words protesting the proposed killing of skunks in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. You’ll receive a couple “out-of-office” replies, but thus far all emails worked for me.

SOURCE: PETA

BACKGROUND

According to news sources, the city of Windsor, Ontario, is considering trapping and killing unwanted skunks who live in the city. The council has already allocated funds for this cruel plan, and now it’s just sorting out the details!

Killing skunks won’t work to control populations and will backfire. The spike in the food supply will prompt remaining animals and newcomers to breed at accelerated rates, meaning that the skunk population will increase! Lethal methods are also extremely cruel, tearing families apart and leaving young animals vulnerable to death by starvation or dehydration.

Please politely urge Windsor officials to toss their skunk-eradication program and stick with effective, humane wildlife control measures instead.

WHOM TO CONTACT

Please e-mail Windsor Mayor Eddie Francis and the Windsor City Council using this block of e-mail addresses (copy and paste this list into your “To” field):

SAMPLE LETTER

Dear Honourable Francis and City Council Members:

I am writing regarding the city of Windsor, Ontario’s plan to consider trapping and killing unwanted skunks who live in the city.  Although this idea is inherently cruel based on the premise alone, it is important to recognize it is based on erroneous information.

Please allow me to illustrate a few of these concerns. First, ecologically, populations will fluctuate according to conditions and naturally-occurring food sources; it is the interference of humans that causes imbalance. To blame and slaughter the skunks for human encroachment is both irresponsible and unjustified.

Second, killing the skunks artificially increases food supplies to the remaining skunks, the consequence of which is increased reproduction and an ensuing greater skunk population. In fact, studies have demonstrated that the continual cycle of seasonal killing is responsible for a rebound, or larger populations, in subsequent years.

Third, this type of mass killing using such a brutal type of slaughter in such a central and visible location would certainly adversely affect both visitation and tourism; it would be financially detrimental to continue with such a cruel and unnecessary killing, and although I do not currently reside in Windsor, I would be unwilling to consider it, or nearby, as a potential vacation destination if this cull continues.

Fourth, this type of cull would leave families torn apart, and young and weak animals would starve or die of dehydration.

Please instead examine alternative, non-lethal humane wildlife options such as fencing and making properties unattractive using food storage and other strategies, which, according to established protocols when using these methods, have all proven successful in curtailing animal populations.

I know your time is limited and I want to thank you each for your attention to this urgent matter.
