Protest the deaths of three horses during HBO’s filming of Luck: sample messages

Since the launch of the first season of HBO’s series Luck, we have been openly and publicly disturbed about the depiction of thoroughbred horse racing, which we find to be a cruel and exploitive industry. On February 10, 2012, we posted a Forbes article reporting on the death of not one but 2 horses in the filming of the first season of Luck.

On Tuesday, March 13, 2012, we posted a TMZ article reporting the death of a third horse connected to the filming of the HBO series “Luck”. When that happened, we asked you for calls and letters of protest to HBO.

On Thursday, March 15, 2012, HBO announced that they had ceased all production on their series Luck.

HBO cancels Luck after third horse dies

HBO did the right thing when they cancelled Luck; but, the fact of the matter is that three horses had to die before that happened. In addition, we are concerned that the America Humane Association that is supposed to be overseeing the safety of animals used in film productions, fell down on their responsibility.

Please join Win Animal Rights and Carriage Horse Cruelty in thanking HBO for having cancelled their series while at the same time letting HBO know that the death of even a single animal is unacceptable. We also ask that you contact the American Humane Association to question how they could allow a production that had already led to the death of two race horses, to ultimately lead to the death of a third. If the American Humane Association cannot insure the safety of animals used in filming and entertainment, they should relinquish their watchdog role.

SAMPLE MESSAGE HBO

Chairman & CEO Nelson,

I want to thank HBO for making the ethical decision to cancel the series Luck after a third horse died on location, but I have concerns that it took three deaths to cease production. No horse should ever have to be victim of any exploitative business, which is the benchmark of horse racing. The deaths of the horses was an unnecessary but haunting representation of the horse racing industry.

Thank you for your time.

SAMPLE MESSAGE AMERICAN HUMANE ASSOCIATION

To Whom It Concerns,

Because consumer trust and loyalty is greatly necessary during the current economic climate, it is important for business practices to reflect adherence to honest and compassionate ideals, including a refusal of animal cruelty. As such, I therefore respectfully ask that American Humane Association either secure a reason making the death of three horses acceptable during the filming of Luck or relinquish its animal watchdog moniker and instead become a model of animal compassion. Until such a time, however, I will find it necessary to promote a boycott of all movies sharing the American Humane Association name.

Thank you for your time.

we would like to thank the
station,HBO
for cancelling this killing
television show.
no “luck” was to be had
by the three horses
who lost who died,
where was american humane,
the supposed watchdog inside?
a sad reminder of horse racing
an industry so tragic,
a world of exploitation,
not glamour or magic.
