HighestWelfare.Humane.Assured.GoodPractices.Vegetarian. Regenerative.Flexitarian.Lies...

What is the difference between No Welfare, High Welfare, and Highest Welfare when they all require animals to die? Only human comfort, NONE protect the actual animals. The most humane, ethical, and honest Webster-defined "welfare" is NOT exploiting animals - not using, not wearing, not eating, not killing - animals. The only meaningful position is vegan, everything else is just how humans euphemize animals' required suffering and violent deaths: no human exploits animals because they honestly believe that NOT exploiting animals is UNethical or INhumane.

Rats Used at Haunted House Need Your Voice

October 6, 2013

BACKGROUND | SOURCE PETA

Scandia—a “family fun” center in Ontario, California—reportedly uses live rats as “props” at its annual haunted house event, which runs from September 27 to November 2. According to attendees, Scandia keeps some rats caged beneath fog machines, while others are carried by employees who shove them into the faces of screaming patrons. Rats are highly intelligent animals who are extremely sensitive to noise, vibrations, and lighting—and being subjected to the chaos that is commonplace at fright attractions, without means of escape or defense, is pure torture for them. PETA has implored the owners to end their use of rats, but to no apparent avail. We need your help now!

Let Scandia Sports, Inc., know that it’s cruel to use rats as props, and ask the company to stop doing so! Then, please spread this alert far and wide.

Two victories, please take further action on one

October 4, 2013
by

1. We are pleased to inform you that NBC Sports has responded to PETA and compassionate individuals like yourself and has canceled the depraved National Rifle Association (NRA)—sponsored big game hunting show Under Wild Skies. As you know, the show depicted NRA lobbyist Tony Makris as he hunted elephants, hippopotamuses, antelope, buffalo, crocodiles, and numerous other exotic animals—including one episode in particular that featured Makris laughing as he shot an African bull elephant in the face. Thanks to all of you who responded to our action alert, NBC Sports will no longer include Makris’ sadistic exploits in its television programming.

Thank you for your support and for all that you do for animals!

2. Please take a moment to write NIH and urge it to cut funding for this cruelty to cats.

It took detailed complaints and evidence submitted by PETA—along with hundreds of thousands of e-mails and calls from compassionate and dedicated people like you—but the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has agreed that cats, such as Double Trouble and Broc (pictured below), have suffered greatly in horrific brain experiments at the University of Wisconsin–Madison (UW–Madison).

An NIH report released yesterday reveals that PETA prompted the agency to take the exceptionally rare step of ordering UW–Madison to suspend the experiment for nearly six months and to implement major changes.

Broc is still alive in the laboratory

The agency agreed with PETA that UW–Madison failed to take sufficient steps to prevent infected, open head wounds in cats and to subsequently treat them. NIH also agreed that UW-Madison’s justification for the use of cats as well as the number of cats used was inadequate. Although the new report downplays some of the serious problems in the laboratory and all but ignores the routine abuse of cats, NIH ordered major reforms in the UW-Madison laboratory, where cats have holes drilled into their skulls, are deafened, are coerced through starvation to participate in experiments, and are then killed.

NIH’s findings echo a separate damning report released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in February, also spurred by a PETA complaint, that found rampant infections among the cats used in this experiment. Some infections were so severe that they resulted in euthanasia, and one cat’s eye had to be removed.

Compelling NIH to take serious action is no small feat, but more work needs to be done to get cats such as Broc out of this laboratory for good!

Please take a moment to write NIH and urge it to cut funding for this cruelty to cats.

Thank you for all that you do for animals.

On September 18, a small group of Greenpeace International activists approached the Gazprom Prirazlomnaya oil platform, in the Pechora Sea off the Russian coast, to engage in a peaceful protest of Arctic oil drilling. Two activists were detained and held overnight on a Russian Coast Guard vessel.

The following day, September 19, the Russian Coast Guard illegally boarded the Greenpeace International ship Arctic Sunrise while in international waters. All 30 members of the crew were held under armed guard for 5 days as the ship was towed to the port of Murmansk. Upon arrival, the activists were taken from the ship and held by authorities on land.

On September 26th, 28 of our activists, along with a photographer and videographer who were documenting the action, appeared at a preliminary court hearing in Murmansk, where most of them were remanded in custody for two months, facing investigation for possible piracy. We are demanding the immediate release of all activists, our ship, and an end to offshore oil drilling in the Arctic for good.

Popcorn Activism – A Fun Way to Help Animals!

October 2, 2013
by

Check out this awesome idea from animal rights activist Celeste!

celestedimilla's avatarHonk If You're Vegan

popcorn

If I were rich, I’d pay to show the movie Vegucated (a documentary that follows three New Yorker’s who agree to go vegan for six weeks to learn what it’s all about) in theaters so people could see it for free on the big screen. I’d show it in Hollywood with vegan stars, like Ellen and Glee’s Lea Michele, there to cause a commotion. After this hyped showing, it would catch on and other vegans would organize similar viewings all over the world.

I’d call it Popcorn Activism and it would become “a thing.” As it caught on in movie theatres, it would also catch on in people’s homes. Vegans and vegetarians everywhere would get involved by inviting friends and neighbors over for veggie movie nights.

Thousands of people would be moved by compassion and go veggie. Factory farms would close left and right and millions of animals would be saved. Okay…

Save Zimbabwe National Parks Ranger Maxwell Bowa from being hanged for killing a poacher

Please click to sign HERE

On an operation to arrest poachers, senior Zimbabwean game ranger Maxwell Bowa shot and killed suspected poacher Lenna Nkosana in the line of duty, and apparently in self-defense.

Zimbabwe is currently facing an unprecedented spike in elephant poaching, and the country’s rhino population is down to a fraction of what it once was a few decades ago, when it was home to the largest number of black rhino in Africa. The fact that a senior ranger from the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority currently engaged in a losing battle in the Poaching War has been sentenced to be hanged smacks of possible deeper, sinister motives at play in Zimbabwe’s judicial system.

Zimbabwe has not carried out any death sentences since 2005 when armed robbers and convicted murderers Edgar Masendeke and Stephen Chidhumo were hanged. How can the Zimbabwe justice system even consider Maxwell Bowa to be on the same level as these two hardened criminals?

Please help by sending a message to Patrick Chinamasa (Zimbabwe Minister of Justice), and Saviour Kasukuwere (Zimbabwe Minister of Environment) that rangers need all the support they can get in their desperate and losing battle against poachers, and ask them to show that Zimbabwe is serious about winning the Poaching War currently raging against Africa’s priceless and endangered wildlife heritage.

Activists hijack brutal bull-spearing festival

October 1, 2013
by

Source The Local

Twenty bulls have been “liberated” from the town of Tordesillas in northern Spain on the eve of a controversial festival in which the whole town hunts down a single animal with spears.

The animals went missing on Saturday night hours before they were due to take part in the notorious Toro de la Vega festival.

Organizers have not ruled out the possibility that animal rights protesters freed the bulls from their stables in the Castile and Leon municipality, online daily El Norte de Castilla reported.

The medieval festival has attracted widespread condemnation for its “savagery and brutality”, with anti-bullfighting party PACMA labelling it one of the “worst examples of animal abuse” in Spain.

Toro de la Vega sees hundreds of spear-wielding participants taking on a 600-kilo beast through the streets and fields of Tordesillas.

The bull, which is surrounded by a multitude of people on foot and on horseback, is only pardoned if it makes it past the fighting zone limits standing.

Ten to fifteen thousand people took to the streets of Madrid on Saturday to call for an end to the ancient bullfighting tradition.

PACMA spokesperson Laura Duarte led the march past Spain’s ruling Popular Party headquarters.

“The PP authorize this festivity in Castile and Leon and opposition party PSOE organize it,” Duarte told digital daily 20minutos.

“They’re both equally responsible for what’s happening in Tordesillas but they won’t change anything unless it’s in their own interests.”

An online campaign launched by Spain’s Animal Dignity Platform has seen thousands of participants holding up signs with the message “I’ll take the bull’s place” as well them posting images of them symbolically breaking spears in half.

Ban free-to-good-home ads on Craigslist

CRAIGSLIST  RESPONSE

Craigslist Pets and “Puppy Doe”
By

We were saddened and horrified to learn of the pain and suffering inflicted on “Puppy Doe” (Kiya) in Massachusetts.

Based on news coverage, the last owner via craigslist is not a suspect, but we are ready (as always) to assist law enforcement if needed.

Meanwhile a  petition wants to ban tens of millions of CL users from rehoming pets, dooming countless healthy animals to needless euthanization (no-kill shelters are full).

It misleadingly blames CL for Kiya’s fate, and for the Jeffrey Nally case, where police made clear all victims were found via newspaper ads:

“[Chief Deputy] Murray said Nally gathered dogs by responding to newspaper ads.” ”[Nally’s girlfriend] told police Nally had her call people who advertised puppies and kittens in the ‘Bargain Hunter’”

morningjournalnews ] [ weirtondailytimes ] (warning, graphic!)

But direct rehoming via classifieds is a solution, not a problem.

Countless pets find good homes on CL, saved from euthanization (“no kill” shelters are full and 3 million healthy pets are put down yearly).

In fact, CL “pets” is a primary tool shelter volunteers themselves use to find homes for dogs and cats they might otherwise have to put down.

We at craigslist love animals and are proud of the overwhelming good our “pets” section does in finding them new loving homes.

Let’s honor Kiya by (1) not breeding so many pets, and (2) taking care when a new home must be found (CL recommends a rehoming fee).

SAMPLE LETTER

To Whom It Concerns,

She died and went to heaven with kibble in her tummy, resting in the gentle, loving arms of people who cared for her at the Boston vet clinic where she took her last breath. Her name was Kiya. Her previous owner gave her a lot of toys and wonderful blankets to sleep on, but could not keep her so she was re-homed through an ad on Craigslist. According to the unidentified previous owner, she was not allowed to bring Kiya to a new apartment because of breed restrictions.

The rest of her story is beyond the realm of human reasoning.

It’s beyond words that this sweet, innocent dog, who once knew love, had to suffer this violent, evil fate.

How many more times does this have to happen before Craigslist bans ads allowing people to give their pets away to strangers, sadists, and serial killers?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uarA-0us_JM&feature=youtu.be

Stop allowing the sale and free-to-good-home for animals .  If free-to-good-home pet ads were banned, there would be some justice in Puppy Doe’s name knowing that another pet will never be harmed as a result of being dumped on Craigslist.

Posting on Craigslist, should not have anyone concerned for the safety of animals, yet with recent issues appearing, it seems we must.

Dog fighters, animal abusers, and torturers have been using Craigslist as a means to obtain their victims.  Please stop allowing the sale and free-to-good-home for animals

Posting on Craigslist, shouldn’t have any one concerned for the safety of animals, yet with recent issues appearing it seems we must. Dog fighters, animal abusers and torturers have been using Craigslist as a means to obtain animals. Be it from small to large, if it is listed as free or less than a $100 charge, they will adopt/take your animals.

We all do remember Alex Phelps:
http://www.mizozo.com/world/01/2011/03/alex-phelps-the-alleged-craigslist-cat-killer.html

He killed 7 cats he obtained off of Craigslist.

Furthermore, just last year in Virginia, a man was convicted of being a dog serial killer after mutilating and killing 29 puppies he collected off  Craigslist:

http://preciousjules1985.wordpress.com/2012/04/07/free-to-a-good-home-craigslist-dog-killer-sentenced-in-west-virginia/
https://our-compass.org/2012/04/11/free-to-a-good-home-craigslist-dog-killer-sentenced-in-west-virginia/

There are more animals being killed, tortured, and victimized as fighting or baiting animals, then there are being saved.

http://www.examiner.com/article/the-horrors-at-haylee-haven-animal-murderer-uses-craigslist

And yet, you and your Craigslist team still continue to allow animals to be posted on your network.

It is about time to end the cruelty and abuse.

Disallow the free or sale of innocent animals on your network.

Thank you for taking the time to consider this urgent appeal.

Please Urge NBC Sports to Cancel Big Game Hunting Show

September 28, 2013

In a recent episode of Under Wild Skies—a National Rifle Association (NRA)–sponsored big game hunting show that airs on NBC Sports—NRA lobbyist Tony Makris, the show’s host, joked as he killed a bull elephant in Africa for his personal enjoyment. This is reportedly not the only elephant Makris has killed for Under Wild Skies. We urge you to join PETA in demanding that NBC cancel the show immediately.

It has been well established that elephants are capable of experiencing emotions, including joy, anger, grief, and sympathy. Killing a single elephant can devastate a family, and their mourning ritual over the death of a family member rivals any that we humans have developed. Elephants play with each other, can reason and use tools, have exceptional memories, and form enduring bonds with other elephants. They work together and comfort and protect each other. Elephant offspring stay with their mothers for many years—males for up to 15 years and females for their entire lives.

In addition to killing multiple elephants while making Under Wild Skies, Makris, who is depicted on the show’s website in a photograph with two dead male lions, has also reportedly hunted rhinos and leopards for the show.

Please take a moment to demand that NBC Sports cancel Under Wild Skies immediately!

Some scientists say that without cutting meat consumption in half, the planet is heading for a crisis

September 27, 2013
by

Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons

Source Natural News
By Raw Michelle

It isn’t often that people are willing to take dietary advice from someone whose field of specialty isn’t found in the health sciences. However, recently, some scientists have been growing more vocal about dietary recommendation that have less to do with personal health, and more to do with the planet’s struggle to meet the needs of all of its passengers.

The coming challenge

In June 2012, the University of Exeter released a study in the journal Energy and Environmental Science, that concluded that if the current food consumption patterns continue, the planet’s food supply will be unable to meet the food needs of the 9.3 billion people who are expected to be living in 2050.

The researchers estimated that if the amount of meat consumed in the Standard American Diet (SAD) was reduced by about half, the projected food shortages would be largely neutralized.

Sharing the calorie wealth

While it is true that meat is a more calorie dense food source, meeting caloric needs is essentially a non-issue. The obesity rates in developed nations attests to this fact. However, for the nearly one billion people in developing nations to whom starvation and hunger are very real threats, the issue is one of resource disparity, rather than the planet’s incapacity to sustain the population numbers. If the world’s meat resources were converted to grain, the needs of the whole population would more easily be met.

Meat, when consumed, often easily exceeds calorie needs because meat is such a high calorie food. Higher calorie consumption is associated with an increase in risk for cancers and heart, liver and kidney disease. The consumption of animal products is likewise associated with an increase in many pathologies.

High meat, low efficiency

The production of beef is an extremely energy wasteful process. It takes roughly sixteen pound of grain to produce one pound of beef. The land requirements for generating animal products are also higher than for plants, meaning that the amount of food that can be produced from the same piece of land is again exponentially in favor of crop production.

The environmental costs are also stacking up against meat consumption. As much as 96 percent of grain fed to cattle is converted into manure rather than meat. While research continues to investigate the recapturing of these wasted biofuels, their impact currently represents a challenge to atmospheric carbon dioxide levels. The size of the meat industry and the numbers of cattle worldwide – accounting for just under 80 percent of all agriculture – make choosing meat not just a poor health choice, but one of the main contributors to climate shift.

BEING VEGAN – If I Were a Dog

If I were a dog, there is a chance that I could be treated very, very well. I would live in a home where I was recognized as a member of the family and given love and attention every day of my life. I would be a vital part of their lives and they would be a vital part of mine. Every day I would be showered with affection and I would love in kind. There would be long walks and trips in the car and many adventures together. I would have the best of care and be an important of that home life. I would be a companion for my human(s) and they would be a companion for me. Life would be as it could and should be.

If I were a dog, I could also be left alone. Abandoned and unwanted. I could have gotten out of where I thought I belong only to roam and not be able to find my way home. I could be picked up and taken to a place where they would put me in a cage. Sometimes the humans might decide that they don’t want to or can’t take care of me anymore and bring me to that same place themselves and leave me. Either way I will sit in the cage waiting for someone I know to come and find me and bring me back home. But most of the times they do not come. Sometimes people that I don’t know come by and look at me and I wonder if they would want to take me home. They look nice. If I am lucky they will choose me…I see other dogs going with people. But then sometimes we just sit alone waiting. I wish someone would have brushed me or given me a bath. I know I can look better than this. I hope that they see something in my eyes when they look at me. If I stay here too long they will lead me to a room that don’t want to go to. It just doesn’t feel right. They will give me a shot and I will go to sleep. I just won’t ever wake up.

If I were a dog, I could be born in a place that people will call a puppy mill. Our mothers give birth to us often in cages stacked up together and it smells really bad and there are lots of bugs around. It is sometimes really hot and other times it is really cold. Our mother seems so tired and doesn’t have much energy but she loves us the best that she can. They will have her do this over and over again till she is all worn out and then they can’t use her any more and will just put her to sleep…and she will never get up. I don’t stay with my mother very long or my other brothers and sisters. Some of us do not feel very well but they separate us and send us to someplace where we will be placed in cages next to other dogs and people will come by and look at us and point at us. Sometimes they will ask someone to open our cages so that can pet us and hold us. That is nice. If they like us we go home with those people even if we aren’t feeling very well. If we are too sick we might not live very long. We might have too many problems and maybe they won’t want to take care of us any more.

If I were a dog, I might be bought or bred for people who will make us fight other dogs. They starve us, beat us and treat us very badly. We don’t want to hurt any other animal or human but we are so frustrated and angry and confused. We often don’t know any other way. They put us with other dogs that will hurt us if we don’t hurt them first. Everything is happening so fast and the humans are yelling and making lots of noise around us and there is teeth and snarling and pain and blood and sometimes that is our end. If we live through it we are not treated or cared for even though we are hurting and we only live until the next time we are forced to fight. If we don’t fight we will be beaten or killed so we fight to survive. Sometimes they bring dogs to us who don’t know how to fight so that we can practice on them. It doesn’t feel right but if we don’t kill them we will suffer the consequences. This is the only life that we might ever know.

If I were a dog, I could be taken as a puppy to a school or company that would keep me in a cage in a laboratory. People in long coats would come in each morning and look at us and do things to us. We are never sure why. Sometimes they make us breathe smoke that makes us cough and choke. They make us drink liquids that also make us feel funny or sick. They spray things in our eyes that burn so badly…there are times that after they do it we can’t see anymore. Sometimes there are windows and sometimes there are not. We might never see sunlight. We might never leave our cage and see the outside and put our paws upon the grass or the dirt. Some of us will be opened up and they will look inside our brains or other parts of our body. If we live we will get to stay in our cage for the rest of our lives. If we don’t live they might just throw us in a big garbage can with other dogs and animals that didn’t make it either.

If I were a dog, I might be born in a country where they would look at me as something to eat rather than something to pet and love. I could be rounded up with other dogs and crammed so tightly that we can hardly breathe in a big metal basket and then weighed and sold to someone who will take us to a place that no dog or any other animal should ever have to go to. They want to kill us so they can eat us. We can still be alive and our throats cut or they will put us in boiling hot water to burn our skin off. What kind of miserable end to a miserable life would this be? I would wish I had never been born. I am dead and now they will take our skinned bodies and hang it up in the marketplace so that people will buy our dead carcasses and take us to their homes or restaurants and cook us and eat us. Why would anyone ever want to do that?

If I were a dog, I could be recognized as the special and loving animal that I am. I could have people find me in the shelter and clean me up and take care of me until my owners find me or I find a forever home. There would be people that would work on my behalf and be tireless to see that things like puppy mills and dog fighting would no longer exist. I could be in a cage in a lab and be rescued by people who would set me free forever and let me feel the warmth of the sun for the first time and play upon the grass and find me a home where people will love me and take care of me and not let anyone experiment on me ever again. People would help me by making sure that I couldn’t make puppies or bring puppies into the world because there just isn’t enough nice people in the world to take care of all of us. People could learn and grow to understand that there are plenty of other things to eat so that they don’t have to eat dogs any more. If I were a dog, I would be born into this world as a special gift with a heart full of unconditional love to share for whoever wants it…this is all that I could ever want and hope for.

Gored Utah Man Finds Out That Payback Really Is Hell

PETA

Written by Christina Matthies

Imagine your legs giving out as something sharp tears through your skin, shredding muscle and penetrating bones. Your heart races with panic as you see your own blood. You feel yourself growing weak, and you try to catch your breath, but you can’t move.

This is what deer, elk, moose, and other animals experience when they are shot down by hunters every year all over the U.S. And it’s exactly what Utah hunter Bradley Greenwood felt when he slipped and was gored in the face and neck on the antlers of a 700-pound elk he’d killed only moments before.

Greenwood isn’t the only hunter who’s hurt himself drooling over a “big rack.” With plans to place a billboard in Vernal, Utah, that shows an elk with blood dripping from his antlers and reads, “Payback Is Hell. Leave Animals Alone!” PETA is bringing attention to the fact that hunting draws blood on both sides. Every year, hunters hurt or kill themselves, friends, family, and even strangers innocently hiking through the woods.

Hunting isn’t necessary for human survival, and so-called “wildlife management” is a myth that often intentionally inflates “game” populations, rather than the reverse. Wildlife populations are self-regulating, responding to naturally occuring disease, the availability of food and habitat, and prey-predator relationships. Hunters hunt for the thrill of it, often injuring animals who manage to escape, only to die later from blood loss, infection, or predation.

Now that a recovering Greenwood knows what it feels like to gasp what you believe to be your last breaths, maybe he’ll stop killing animals and agree with PETA that compassion feels better than (bad) karma.

Blackfish to air on CNN October 24

September 24, 2013

OC apologizes, Blackfish will air on CNN on OCTOBER 24, not September 24, thank you.

Source: CNN
By Breeanna Hare

It was one of the hottest films out of Sundance, but “Blackfish” will leave you with chills.

The nearly 90-minute documentary tells the story of SeaWorld trainer Dawn Brancheau, who was killed in 2010 when the killer whale Tilikum grabbed her and yanked her underwater.

“I became interested in this project when I found out about the death of Brancheau,” filmmaker Gabriela Cowperthwaite said. “I was very confused by that story, because I didn’t understand why a killer whale who was a very highly intelligent animal would have made a decision to kill a trainer that was actively feeding it.”

The result of Cowperthwaite’s curiosity is a film that raises a number of questions, not the least of which being whether killer whales have any place in theme parks.

Critics have praised “Blackfish” for being an “emotionally powerful” and “mesmerizing psychological thriller” that could double as a teaching tool. The documentary arrived in select theaters on July 19, and it will also air on CNN as part of CNN Films on October 24 at 9 p.m. ET.

To unravel what happened between the 12,000 pound Tilikum and Brancheau, Cowperthwaite also takes us through the 39-year history of orcas in captivity. Although Brancheau’s story is at the heart of the film, “Blackfish” also shows more generally the dangers of working with orcas and their majestic beauty and intelligence.

“For anyone who has ever questioned the humaneness of keeping wild animals in captivity and training them to perform tricks for food, this will be trenchant, often harrowing stuff,” The Hollywood Reporter said in its Sundance review. “Perhaps even more so for those who have never considered the issue.”
