Group Calls on Local Officials to Investigate Riverdale Rodeo for Animal Abuse

Please note: Our Compass had an alert about the event, but it occurred nonetheless.  The following is what is happening currently.

Press Release | Source SHARK

Riverdale, CA – The Riverdale Rodeo is under fire from animal protection group SHowing Animals Respect and Kindness (SHARK) for its “Barnyard Scramble” event. The event is where a large group of children chase animals including chickens, goats, pigs and rabbits for a competition. In a SHARK investigation at the May 5, 2013 rodeo, the terrified animals can be seen being dropped, kicked, held by their wings and roughly handled. The event can easily result in many serious injuries to the animals.

SHARK is demanding local officials ban the “Barnyard Scramble” and is calling on the local Animal Control to investigate the rodeo for animal abuses. SHARK president Steve Hindi stated, “It is shocking that children are being taught to abuse and dominate animals in this way. The animals are clearly mistreated.” Throughout the video animals are shown being thrown to the ground, baby ducks being picked up by their delicate wings, chickens being kicked and goats and pigs being roughly handled. The animals run terrified around the ring trying to escape their ordeal. Any animals the children catch they keep dooming them to an unknown fate.

Karen Davis, President of United Poultry Concerns stated, “This “Barnyard Scramble” is a reign of terror, orchestrated by adults, on helpless, frightened and bewildered chickens, ducks, goats and pigs by children who are being used by their parents to act out behaviors the children do not understand. The “scramble” comprises both child abuse and animal abuse. Children are always abused whenever they are taught and, as in this situation, basically forced by the adults they are dependent on, to enjoy tormenting animals and to fear being ridiculed if they refuse or are scared to participate in such a heartless, moronic, and injurious activity that defiles a child’s natural empathy for animals.”

SHARK investigates cases of animal abuse at rodeos around the country. The illegal electro-shocking of horses at the Riverdale rodeo was also captured on tape along with other animal injuries. Video footage of these incidents will be released at a later date.

please try and get this stopped or we will have a new generation of youth abusing animals. Children should be taught how to to care for animals not inflict pain on them,

How disheartening to see that our pleas fell on death ears! My main concern aside from the animals is that these parents are teaching their kids that its ok to do with animals as ypou please, we , as parents have a short window to teach our children compassion and empathy towards animals and humans what is this “scramble” teaching them? What is wrong with parents today anyway? We tried, im so very happy that SHARK is stepping in someone has to make right this terrible wrong

I don’t understand how even non Animal Rights Activists could think this is okay – ? It baffles me. You don’t need to be an ARA to understand the cruelty inherent in these evil events, yet they allow such anyway. They all need to have their heads examined! Thank you as always, hon, I completely agree.

True, but it’s unfortunate that animals have to pay for human stupidity (or diet, or entertainment, or clothing, and any of the other numerous human-sourced atrocities animals have to endure). Thanks, Lynne.

I’d like to know what you hypocrites all eat and wear??? What do you think these animals are bred and raised for??? Food & clothing!!! Should you be filming people’s children and posting without parental consent??? Find something better to do with your time, besides defaming people and organizations…Do you eat eggs and drink milk??!! Wear leather shoes on your feet??? Get a life!!!!

Ms. Duggan: I would like to know what you entered this site for other than to lay blame where none is due! These animals are babies, not “bred and raised for” torture… no animal is. This video was taken at a public event. These children were allowed and no doubt encouraged by their parents to participate in this event. No child was hurt by the filming or posting of this video; sorry to say that the same cannot be said for any of the little animals. I am a person who happens to think that animal abuse is far worse a crime than trying to put an organized event in which animal abuse is encouraged and looked upon as entertainment suitable for youngsters out of commission for good. What anyone here eats, drinks, or wears is none of your business and has nothing whatsoever to do with the video or this blog, so in your own words: “Get a life!!!!”

I agree, Amelia, thanks for your words. But for her information, most people on this site, including myself, are vegan.

It is apparent that Deb Duggan is missing that “compassion” gene. No animal should be used and abused by humans for exploitation or entertainment. It is difficult to understand the mentality of those who patronize and/or participate at such events. These people are no more “evolved” than a centipede. They need to find their amusement somewhere else. Where no animals are subjected to harassment, tormented, injured or traumatized. In other words… they need to evolve and find some compassion!!

CONGRATULATIONS to SHARK for exposing and continuing to fight against this most blatant, DELIBERATE animal abuse! There can be no greater depravity than TEACHING CHILDREN TO BE CRUEL to animals! The parents and supporters of this stupid, disgusting “scramble” should check out the FBI “Early Warning” database, which tracks animal abusers as the future child abductors, criminal psychotics, and serial murderers.
    HOW STUPID CAN WE BE?????

Very well said, and so true, Jeanne. The link between animal and human abuse has been well established, and these depraved individuals begin their careers abusing animals. This event is nothing but abuse for animals. Stupid, idiotic, and completely dangerous.

As a 6 year old I was invited to a rodeo by a friend and her family. Not having the first clue what RODEO was, I wanted to go. My parents tried to talk me out of it but did not explain the reasoning. I ended up going with them. Upon seeing the first little calf run from a chute and hearing his neck snap and seeing him lie crumpled in an unnatural position, I began to cry and begged to go home. I was called a sissy town girl and the sissy of a banker’s daughter by my friend’s parents. And I was told that as soon as they dropped me off at my whimpy banker dad’s house, I was never to play with my friend again and wasn’t welcome in their home, and they were going to tell my whimpy sissified parents what a rotten cry-baby guest I was and how I ruined their rodeo experience. I remember thinking how that was very OK by me as I would never want to play with anyone who was or enter the home of anyone that was an animal abuser. That said, this video brought back a flood of emotions and memories of that day and a flood of tears– for the things I remembered, for the animals I saw that day who lost their lives (4–2 calves, a steer and a young horse whose leg was broken), and from this video for all the little animals who were horrified, terrorized, traumatized, and abused and for all the children who were forever and irreparably shaped and formed into animal abusers on that day!

I won’t rest until I see an end to rodeos and events such as this one!!
Animal Abuse does NOT equal Family Fun and Entertainment!!!
I am of the opinion that events such as this are in fact child endangerment/abuse as well as animal torture. Parents who bring children to these events or to rodeos should be arrested for child abuse.
