Andrea the cat was picked up as a stray and brought to a Utah animal shelter. After no one came to claim her, she was euthanized — or at least, that’s what everyone thought.

After an employee ran the gas chamber, he opened the door and found that she was still alive. The employee decided to give it another shot, closed the chamber and ran the gas again.

After running the gas a second time, he thought she was dead. The shelter worker then put Andrea in a bag and stuffed her in a cooler.

About 45 minutes later, a couple of shelter employees came in to put a dog they had just euthanized in the cooler, and they heard a meow. They looked at each other and they heard the meow again, this time even louder.

They tore open the bag, and there was Andrea, looking at them terrified, wide eyed and very much still alive.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

The shelter’s manager finally handed Andrea over to the Community Animal Welfare Society. She’s doing well, and the organization hopes she becomes the “spokescat” against gas chambers.

Animal welfare groups have taken issue with the method of euthanasia used on Andrea, blasting it as cruel.

But shelter says, as bizarre as this incident was, they stand by their method.

“This is actually a recommended method by the American Veterinarian Association and we follow all the procedural guidelines that they give us,” said Aaron Crim, a West Valley City, UT Spokesman. “We’ve never had an instance like this since we started using this method so it does work. It’s actually very humane and it’s very quick. This is just an anomaly.”

Andrea the cat appears to be healthy with no ill after effects of the euthanasia.

She is now up for adoption: Community Animal Welfare Society

Andrea is the epitomy of a survivor. What terror she must have gone through, and what a blessing that she will now almost certainly find her furever home. It’s just a shame that the other innocent animals in that gas chamber with Andrea weren’t as fortunate. May she live a long life, and may the powers that be in Utah rethink their cruel policies.

Gassing is not humane…animals are heard screaming and fighting for air…just remember the gas chambers of the Nazi’s…people were heard screaming and fighting for air and clawing at others…inhumane and genocide then and I can only think they are using this method because they want to save $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$and not use the killing fluid injected…people…spay and neuter animals.

I love this little girl so much. I hope that she is an example that people are not the boss of animals and we do not get the say so on how their life is ended or how long they are here. They were here first and humans are supposed to take care of them and be responsible.

THIS GIVES ME VERY MIXED EMOTIONS. FIRST ITS SAD THAT A HEALTHY CAT IS GONNA BE GASSED ANYWAY,2ND IS HOW MANY OTHER ANIMALS HAVE NOT DIED AND ARE ALIVE IN A COOLER OR WHATEVER? THIS IS CAUSE FOR CONCERN AND I DON’T UNDERSTAND HOW THIS CAN HAPPEN. IF IT HAPPENED THIS TIME THEN IT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN !!! I DONT THINK THAT HITLERS WAY OF KILLING IS RIGHT AT ALL!

So gas chambers are not okay for humans as seen in WWII but they are okay for animals…how pathetic!

Perhaps there should be an enquiry into the American Veterinary Association. I have watched video footage of dogs being put into a gas chamber and what I saw and heard will haunt me for the rest of my life. It is cruel in the extreme and not an exception that some animals are not always killed. Goodness knows how many living animals are ‘bagged up’ and put in the cooler. I believe that many high kill shelters in the U.S. are government funded? In other words, they get paid for putting healthy animals in a gas chamber. The American Veterinary Association also approves heartsticking, which is another cruel method of killing.

The only way to save the millions of animals killed every year in the U.S. is to close down the mass breeding mills and ban pet shops everywhere from selling animals. This, combined with comprehensive TNR programmes, will eventually see an end to the overpopulation of small animals that are being traded for profit.

The pet trade is a huge out of control industry with so many lucrative offshoots from veterinary services (!?) to canned pet food and everything in between. Everybody makes a profit, except the animal which has become just another commodity.
