Salazar’s Backroom Deal to Eliminate Protections for Wolves: Two Actions

December 4, 2010

Immediate, please click on and sign the following two petitions:

1. Defenders of Wildlife’s Reject Secretary Salazar’s Backroom Deal to Eliminate Protections for Wolves

2. EarthJustice’s Stop Congress from Removing Endangered Species Protections for the Gray Wolf

BACKGROUND

Recent reports suggest that President Obama’s Interior Secretary, Ken Salazar, is prepared to agree to, and is actively promoting, legislative language that would eliminate Endangered Species Act (ESA) protections for all gray wolves in the Northern Rockies, including those in Montana, Idaho, Wyoming and portions of Washington, Oregon and Utah.

Not only would wolves lose protections, they would also be put beyond the reach of the ESA forever unless the Secretary, at his sole discretion, chooses to restore them to the list of threatened or endangered species. Even worse, under the language, there would be no  ability for the American public to petition for these protections in the future… regardless of how egregious state wolf management plans become.

The proposal is arbitrary and strikes a blow at the very foundation of the Endangered Species Act. Hundreds of wolves — maybe more than a thousand — could be killed. And you and I could lose America’s most effective tool for protecting imperiled wildlife.

We don’t have much time to stop Secretary Salazar’s plan. Please urge your senators to reject Interior Secretary Salazar’s backroom deal to remove protections for wolves and harm the ESA.

MESSAGE TEXT

Reject Secretary Salazar’s Backroom Deal to Eliminate Protections for Wolves

Dear [Decision Maker],

As a supporter of Defenders of Wildlife and someone who cares about wolves, I strongly urge you to reject any legislative proposal by the Secretary of the Interior to eliminate life-saving protections for wolves.

Recent reports suggest that Secretary Salazar is prepared to agree to, and is actively promoting, legislative language that would eliminate Endangered Species Act protections for all gray wolves in the Northern Rockies, including those in Montana, Idaho, Wyoming and portions of Washington, Oregon and Utah.

Not only would wolves be delisted, they would also be put beyond the reach of the ESA forever unless the Secretary, at his sole discretion, chooses to restore them to the list of threatened or endangered species.

Even worse, under the language, there would be no ability for the American public to petition for these protections in the future… regardless of how egregious state wolf management plans become.

This proposal is anti-science, anti-wolf and anti-democratic. I strongly urge you to do everything in your power to oppose it.

Thank you for considering my comments.

Thank you! Have a few extra moments? Go the extra step! Follow-up your letter with a phone call to your senators and representative; tell them to oppose any legislation that would weaken wolf protections and the Endangered Species Act.

First of all, very scary news, I already read bits and pieces about this before.
Well, I hope I get an answer!.
here it goes. I think personally, and I am 100% sure that a lot of people think like I do.
This important issue is GLOBAL, don’t you think?. It concerns all of us, as it will set a precedent when the protection list is adapted.
Why is it made so hard for people outside of the USA to give support to an USA needy cause.
Don’t you think that our voices should be heard too?, wouldn’t it add in a form that the lawmakers in the USA know that this news is read and supported by AA’s over the borders.
This is not an insult, I just think that you are plainly missing out on support that could tip the balance. A lot of non-USA people just don’t bother even reading this anymore, because they know they are excluded, they might share it in their network, but will and can’t sign.
For a laugh, it is a similar situation in the Netherlands, where mainstream doesn’t look any further than there own backyard, and honest, Internet is a mighty tool and should be used to it’s advantage.
When you publish an issue like this, why isn’t there an added petition for non-USA people to go with this article, because some AA’s will sign with a fake zipcode.
I am still not sure whether that is harmful for this cause or not.
If so, if it harms this cause, surely an added global petition for non-USA would solve that problem?
With much respect and kind regards

Well, underneath petition is very confusing for people who want EARTH JUSTICE, although I think I live on the same Earth, I can’t sign????.
This is not a remark to make it ridiculous, far from it, it angers me, it really does. And I think I’ve have got a legit point here. I am reading so many petitions and signing/sharing, but this petition is not meant for me to sign, yet it is named EARTH JUSTICE. ?????? The same earth we all live in, or a paralel one. For me it is again a loss of time which could have been used in better ways.

i know i have said this many times before
but man is the apex predator
every place he touches, he thinks is his own
at this kingdom of blood, he sits on the throne
we are but tenants whose lease is expiring
before that happens, man’s brain needs a rewiring
to see his place in the larger scheme of things
protect all god’s creatures, take them under his wing
a true global nation includes all who dwell
please restore our heaven, from this manmade hell
