Shocking footage has appeared showing a dying mountain bear being held captive in a filthy cage drinking from a Coca-Cola bottle for the amusement of customers in an Azerbaijan cafe.
The cruel spectacle has been branded ‘a disgrace’ by The International Fund for Animal Welfare.
The harrowing scenes show the malnourished bear gripping the plastic bottle with its paws in a cramped, squalid cage.
The pictures were taken last month in the city of Gabala by Daryl Willard a British sports coach who has worked in the former Soviet republic.

Gabala is where former England football captain Tony Adams currently lives and manages a team.
Mr Willard, 27, revealed that just a few days after his initial visit he returned to confront the cafe owner only to discover the bear had died and been replaced by another one.
He told the Sun: ‘People cheered and shouted as they watched the starving bear drink from the cola bottle and eat sandwich leftovers they threw.
‘A few days after it died, there was a new one. They told me they catch a new one up in the mountains.’
The country’s embassy claimed the cruelty was ‘an isolated case’.

I am writing today to express my profound disappointment and disgust at such a display of animal abuse and am requesting your assistance to prohibit this cruelty characterized by enslaving animals. Indeed, a dying bear imprisoned in a small, dirty, and disgusting cage was made to drink soda and forced to endure not only abuse but also apathetic teasing and taunting from amused cafe patrons. It has also come to my attention that shortly after this depraved spectacle, the bear died, only to be replaced by another.
Although official statements have defined this case as “isolated” it is impossible to assert that humane protocols are observed given the lack of welfare standards. Furthermore, it is important to acknowledge that any imprisonment is fundamentally cruel, subjecting non-human animals to inadequate space, inferior care, suffering, pain, and lack of companionship and enriching environment: in other words, all animals, intrinsically valuable beyond monetary benefit, are being exploited in demonstrably cruel and unnecessary manners when condemned to human animal entertainment.
It is my hope that you will make the ethical decision to use your influence and capacity as a country representative to ensure that this will cease immediately. However, as long as Azerbaijan continues to unnecessarily capitalize on the exploitation, imprisonment, and maltreatment of non-human animals, I will not financially support you. It is also important to recognize that consumers are increasingly rejecting those destinations that are complicit in the suffering and unnecessary treatment of animals by shifting their loyalties; I hope that you will extend such an ethical and obligatory gesture as well.
I understand your time is limited and I thank you for your attention and consideration.

Nothing surprises me, regarding the depths of mans’ wicked and selfish cruelty to all beautiful, innocent animals, but these pictures of sheer squalidness and despair have reduced me to tears. WHY do arrogant humans think they have the right to torture ANY animal in this way…the pictures scream out of misery and despair…..these stupid, ignorant people have actually poisoned this poor bear and are now doing exactly the same to another because there are no decent Animal Welfare laws in place so no one has even bothered to stop them. This poor bear has finally found peace, but what about the next, and the one after that?????? Someone MUST stop these evil cruelties now…using bears for ANY form of vile entertainment (bear baiting, bear dancing, etc etc), MUSTt end in this, the 21st century, if all countries involved, wish to be called civilized.

İ live in Azerbaijan, but i am not sick and i have written about this bear in my blog. Bear’s condition was unbearable and it died , but now people have brought a new bear into that cage. i am sorry ,this accident has been in Azerbaiajn but they must punish.

So sad that we are so removed from our hearts we cannot see the suffering…….if this was a friend imprisoned, drinking some toxic substance, while others were entertained, you would be mortified, what is the difference, except the fact this animal has less rights than a human being……….this is beyond cruel, it is stupidity in its finest hour……………..

The bear sadly died and was immediately replaced with another one. How could people enjoy watching a starving bear, living in horrendous conditions? No compassion whatsoever… I don’t know if it’s that the majority of people are so stupid and ignorant that they cannot recognize suffering, or if it’s just that they don’t give a damn. Either way it’s pathetic.

I am so disgusted I don’t know what to say except that I have lost faith in humanity. Except for those ppl, those Earth Angels that are activist, advocates, vegetarians, vegans and all fighting to save these poor tortured, beautiful creatures, eveyone else is mean, cold, noncompassionate, apathetic or, as in many cases such as this one, sadistic.
What does this say about our human side? Our genes? PPL that can do this have something sadistically evil in them = psychotic = as in serial killers that torture humans. They would do more of this if not for fear of being caught.
Please everyone, do whatever you can to help stop the edidemic of animals tortures going on here and all over the world. Please? Because it is an epidemic that ppl aren’t aware of. As long as ppl have their home, their material things, their food, thier comfort, they don’t care enough to help the tortured, the suffering, the dieing.

Azerbaijan doesn’t only treats its bears badly, but it also treats human beings even worse! For example, if you call yourself an Armenian in Azerbaijan, the authorities will jail you, beat you and torture you, or even kill you! All ethnic minorities such as Armenians, Talish, Kurds and Lezgins are treated much worse in Azerbaijan than this bear!
