Surrender is not a part of our vocabulary – stop the slaughter now!

October 11, 2010

By Jude Love

Dedicated to the Horses who spilled their blood, lost their lives, and gave up their Freedom For BLM.

American horses continue to be transported to Mexico and Canada for slaughter, to be used as food for human consumption.  The only way to stop the torture of American horses in other countries is federal bill H.R. 503 and the Senate version of the bill, S.B. 727.

As John Holland, founder and president of Equine Welfare Alliance, put it, “Horse slaughter is not a ‘necessary evil’, as the industry claims, it is simply evil.  Now is our opportunity to resign this practice to the dust bin of American history.”

Per Laura Allen, Attorney for Animal Law Coalition, there is still time to stop this EVIL which is bringing Eternal Shame upon the Americans.  Click HERE or on the following link.

CALL TODAY TO STOP THE TRANSPORT AND SLAUGHTER OF AMERICAN HORSES FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION, AND OTHER USES, Per H.R. 503.

IF THIS BILL IS ALLOWED TO DIE IN CONGRESS. MILLIONS OF AMERICAN HORSES WILL CONTINUE TO BE SUBJECTED TO THE EVIL CRUELTY OF SLAUGHTER.

Below is a copy of the Letter which 83 Co-Sponsors signed to be sent to The Honorable Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of The House.

Dear Madame Speaker:

We write to you in strong support of the Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act (H.R. 503), legislation to ban the slaughter of American horses for human consumption and prevent the export of live horses for the same purpose. With 183 bipartisan cosponsors in the House, 28 in the Senate, and tremendous public support, we urge you to allow this bill a vote in the House.

Equine slaughter is inhumane by nature. Horses have a fractious reaction to the stress induced by chutes, kill boxes, puntilla knives and captive bolt stun systems, causing these animals to suffer immensely and die an inhumane death. These animals are subjected to brutal transport conditions on their way to slaughter facilities. In addition, the consumption of horsemeat poses a serious public health threat as this meat contains substances banned for human consumption by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Since 2005, Congress has repeatedly voted to shut down the cruel practice of horse slaughter and included appropriations language to defund the USDA inspection of horses and horsemeat as a stopgap measure until a permanent federal ban is passed. The last three horse slaughter plants on U.S. soil were closed by enforcement of state law in Texas and a recently enacted ban on horse slaughter in Illinois. As you know, California overwhelmingly banned horse slaughter over a decade ago, and the state legislature just passed a resolution in favor of passing the Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act.

Still, American horses continue to be sent over the border for human consumption. Since January of this year, approximately 53,850 horses have been transported across our nation’s borders into the cruelty of slaughter in Mexico and Canada. This number amounts to about 100,000 horses annually, 1,500 per week, or one every five minutes.

As cosponsors of H.R. 503, we, along with millions of Americans and animal protection organizations such as the Animal Welfare Institute and the Humane Society of the United States, urge you to bring this bill to the House floor for a vote.

Thank you in advance for your consideration of this critical legislation.

Best regards,

PLEASE MAKE YOUR PHONE CALLS NOW TO STOP SLAUGHTER OF AMERICAN HORSES. DO NOT DELAY. TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE.

I was born, raised and still live in Canada…..I don’t know who “fabricated” the videos, etc.,but I can guarantee you ALL that “we” do NOT slaughter horses for human consumption!! Why on earth would we?? We have ranches where our “beef” and “pork” are raised…..we have plenty to eat AND we import beef, etc.,from USA!! Come on,people….how “poor” do you think we really are?? “We” are just as “wealthy”,in every aspect of “life”,as you are!! Horses are just as important,to us,as “pets” as our dogs and cats!!

Your statement is sadly ignorant, JoAnn, and I take great exception to your claims that this legitimate, truthful footage is “fabricated”. I don’t care where you born or raised, the sad FACT is that Canada slaughters horses for human consumption, primarily for European markets where it is considered a delicacy. Stop being in denial and do something to help rather than capriciously and self-servingly point the finger because you have difficulty accepting the truth.

“Horse meat for human consumption is a big industry in Canada. The majority of the horse meat exports produced there — 92 percent — are sent to France, Switzerland, Japan and Belgium. In total, Canada exported horse meat to 24 countries in 2009.” http://veterinarynews.dvm360.com/dvm/article/articleDetail.jsp?id=682251&sk=&date=&pageID=2

And by the way, your other “food” is viciously treated as well, as they are in every part of the world: I find it incredibly hypocritical that you can claim horses are as “pets” yet disregard the other animals as “food”. ALL animals deserve freedom from torture, suffering, and exploitation EVERYWHERE. The only humane is vegan.

JoAnn, what planet did you say you came from? Wake up. Canada has been slaughtering and eating horses since the French sailed to the west – to the north Americas which we now call Canada, thanks to Napoleon. The French appetite for horse meat dates from the Battle of Eylau in 1807, when the surgeon-in-chief of Napoleon?? Army, Baron Dominique-Jean Larry, advised the starving troops to eat the flesh of dead battlefield horses.

In Quebec, Canada horse meat is almost more popular than beef. Canada alone produced 18,000 tons of horse meat in just 2009.

The companies that slaughter horses are Viande Richelieu in Quebec and Bouvry Exports in Alberta. It’s been very well documented. I have friends personally who live in Quebec and Vancouver and they are against the atrocity and are fighting to get it stopped

In late February 2010, the Canadian Horse Defense Coalition (CHDC) received hidden camera footage of horse slaughter practices at Viande Richelieu in Quebec and Bouvry Exports in Alberta – the latter known as the largest exporter of horsemeat in North America. The CHDC has compelling proof that puts into question the effectiveness of the assembly-line slaughter of horses. The evidence demonstrates that both the facilities in Alberta and Quebec fail to meet humane slaughter standards used by the CFIA to audit Canadian slaughterhouses.

Here a fairly recent news article of Canadians protesting against Horse slaughtering plant I Canada . Are you saying they don’t know what is going on in their country?

Can you please tell me why there would be legislation in Canada: the Bill C-544, drafted by Alex Atamanenko, an NDP MP from the British Columbia Interior calling an end to all horse slaughtering in Canada? Can you explain? No clearly you can’t. Maybe you don’t eat or slaughter horses but some Canadians do! Make no mistake horse slaughtering is very alive in Canada!
