MESSAGE TO SEND

The Honorable Nancy Pelosi
Office of the Speaker of the House
H-232, The U.S. Capitol
Washington, D.C. 20515

Dear Madame Speaker:

I write to you in strong support of the Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act (H.R. 503), legislation to ban the slaughter of American horses for human consumption and prevent the export of live horses for the same purpose. With 183 bipartisan cosponsors in the House, 28 in the Senate, and tremendous public support, I urge you to allow this bill a vote in the House.

Equine slaughter is inhumane by nature. Horses have a fractious reaction to the stress induced by chutes, kill boxes, puntilla knives and captive bolt stun systems, causing these animals to suffer immensely and die an inhumane death. These animals are subjected to brutal transport conditions on their way to slaughter facilities. In addition, the consumption of horsemeat poses a serious public health threat as this meat contains substances banned for human consumption by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Since 2005, Congress has repeatedly voted to shut down the cruel practice of horse slaughter and included appropriations language to defund the USDA inspection of horses and horsemeat as a stopgap measure until a permanent federal ban is passed. The last three horse slaughter plants on U.S. soil were closed by enforcement of state law in Texas and a recently enacted ban on horse slaughter in Illinois. As you know, California overwhelmingly banned horse slaughter over a decade ago, and the state legislature just passed a resolution in favor of passing the Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act.

Still, American horses continue to be sent over the border for human consumption. Since January of this year, approximately 53,850 horses have been transported across our nation’s borders into the cruelty of slaughter in Mexico and Canada. This number amounts to about 100,000 horses annually, 1,500 per week, or one every five minutes.

I, along with millions of Animal Lovers and Other Animal protection organizations such as the Animal Welfare Institute and the Humane Society of the United States, urge you to bring this bill to the House floor for a vote.

Thank you in advance for your consideration of this critical legislation.

Best regards,

    Dearest Speaker,

I have always admired you from afar and pray to God you help with the protection of these horses. A city girl i was disturbed by the treatment of these creatures and adopted one myself- though i have very little money and no knowledge of their care. This has inducted me into a world where i have been surrounded by many of the heard and to my shock developed bonds with many of them. They look so impersonal from across a field but as you come to know them, they are as affectionate as puppies and so deeply loving and communicative. I had no idea when i saved this pony from slaughter that he would display such distinct emotions and intelligence and can only liken them to the smartest- and most sensitive dog- you have ever known. I deeply beg of you to pass the legislation and protect them and if you ever come to Aspen please let me know so i can introduce you to a whole new world.
    Deepest Thanks Imaginable,
    Annette Cusick

Let the horses out to pasture. Let them graze. There are plenty of people who will love them. Horses are so special. Have a heart.

    Aloha Speaker Pelosi:
I have been both a Horseman and Canine breeder, trainer, owner of literally dozens and dozens of horses and dogs from the time I was nine years old and am still very active in both fields.
It is very disturbing what is going on with regards to the Horses and please bare in mind that these are animals created and placed in to our Care on this planet Earth by God. Now I do not know whether or not you are a believer in God and Our Savior Jesus Christ but my family has been believers in this country since back to 1720 and as an elected official to the people of the United Staes founded on Godly Principals I implore you to stop this legislation and killing of horses.
Horse have served mankind for literally thousands of years and now to just eliminate them for whatever reason in unconscionable at least. And furthermore if you have ever uttered out of your mouth or even thought it “God save and protect our Country” or “God Bless Our Country”, how can your honestly expect Him to do so when we (or You) are destroying his creatures and creation. So I for one ask that you take the action I request and cause this to stop right now. I hesitate to use stronger language and recommendations only as I do not wish to offend you or my government but this is appalling to me and should I be you, which I am not, I would have never let such legislation even begin.
I thank you for your time and attention to this matter which has just now come to my attention and left us both with short fuses to take action but it is in your power. This is an election year which places more burden on elected Officials as besides doing the duty you are all campaign for reelection but I feel series about this particular situation At hand with regards to these horses. Please take care of this by stopping all action.

We should be showing that Americans are caring, humane individuals by not allowing are horses to endure this inhumane treatment. Are we getting so callous that anything goes unless it’s directly related to ourselves?

This is absolutely a disgrace! I can’t believe that people in America can be punished for leaving dogs or cats outside without food or water but yet horses can be slaughtered for no reason and no one gets in trouble for it. I also believe that not only is horse slaughter wrong but i believe round ups are wrong as well. Please stop this from happening, these horses are not just animals they are companions to people just like cats and dogs are. I beg you to please take action and pass HR 503!
