Boycott the Calgary Stampede Rodeo!

July 8, 2010

As you read this (message), the Calgary Stampede Rodeo is taking place in Alberta, Canada. Supporters of rodeo use words like “tradition” and “heritage” to describe what takes place. But, in reality, rodeo is nothing more than the exploitation of animals for human entertainment.

During a rodeo, animals are subjected to immense stress and cruelty in events such as Calf Roping. In this event, the calf is goaded, prodded and often has its tail twisted to ensure that it bursts out of its chute at full speed. The terrified calf is then chased by a mounted rider who must lasso the calf, jump off his horse, pick up the calf, slam it to the ground and tie three of its feet together.

Rodeos have been banned in Britain since 1934, but there are no such laws preventing the Calgary Stampede from going ahead in Canada. We believe that international pressure can bring about change, and over 50 British MPs have already signed a motion condemning the cruelty.

Please take just a couple of minutes to email the Canadian High Commissioner and the head of the Calgary Stampede to tell them that you will be boycotting all rodeo events, and encouraging others to do the same. With enough international pressure, I know we can bring about an end to this cruel and outdated ‘sport’.

Rodeo’s have a long history of cruelty toward animals…I can only hope the sponsors, government officials, and audiences stop supporting these cruel events in the name of entertianment. It is disturbing to myself and many others that people enjoy watching rodeo brutality…This isn’t the wild west and real cowboys didn’t enertian themselves by breaking calves legs and necks for an audience and sponsors..

This extreme cruelty needs to end at once. There is nothing good about this so called sport that is part of Canada’s culture. Why not base a culture on cruelty-free events? This is no way to be treating animals. Please stop this barbarity at once!

    where inside the human brain
    is the concept that
    cruelty equals entertain
    that pain and suffering
    is the way to go
    and that it is okay
    to ro-de-o
well, guess what it is not!!!!
    it is stupid and wrong
mankind should do better than this
it has been on this earth so long
long enough to develop a soul and heart
and throw away the cruelty part
oh human race, oh how you falter
    such a moral disgrace, rampant
    without a halter:(

Rodeos are a horrible spectacle of animal abuse! I have always been uncomfortable with them and could never watch these helpless animals being manhandled and pulled around and hog-tied. I think they should not be allowed to exist. Nor do I believe Bull-fighting, Horse-wrestling, dog races and horse races are at all humane. I love animals passionately and believe they should be cherished and treated with kindness and the gentleness they so much deserve. Man thinks he has the right to do whatever he wants with our precious animal gifts. This is outrageous to me and I do not believe we will ever find peace and serenity on our planet until we treat our animals the way we would treat a loving family member.

I’m a Canadian and am ashamed to have the Calgary Stampede in my country. Animals used for sport is disgusting! Rodeo and Bull fighting are the worst and still there are people who find this shit entertaining! Get rid of the heartless spectators & the sport will die! Boycott animal cruelty!

The calgary stampede is a black eye to thinking Canadians across the country. I have never attended, and neither did my family members when they lived there. It’s the most embarrassing redneck spectacle that this country has to offer. And for all who live in Calgary who AREN’T rednecks it an excuse to shut the city down for days and drink yourself stupid.

Stampede spokesman Doug Fraser said: “We’ve had four incidents that are totally unrelated. It’s a concern, but of course we believe we have the best animal care in the industry.”

No wonder these people drink so much. They need to believe their own lies.
