What is the difference between No Welfare, High Welfare, and Highest Welfare when they all require animals to die? Only human comfort, NONE protect the actual animals. The most humane, ethical, and honest Webster-defined "welfare" is NOT exploiting animals - not using, not wearing, not eating, not killing - animals. The only meaningful position is vegan, everything else is just how humans euphemize animals' required suffering and violent deaths: no human exploits animals because they honestly believe that NOT exploiting animals is UNethical or INhumane.
Please write Wolff Public Relations to urge INTERMIX to stop selling fur: Sample Letter

FROM Fur Free Los Angeles
BACKGROUND
We’ve had our INTERMIX: Please Stop Selling Fur campaign going on for several months now. Not only has INTERMIX continued to ignore us, but they’ve continued to flaunt their sale of fur. Perhaps INTERMIX is under the assumption that if they continue to ignore us, that we’ll just go away. They could not be more wrong…
If INTERMIX wants to continue selling fur and contribute to the barbaric fur trade, then we’re going to have to make this campaign even louder. The Fur Free Los Angeles team is currently meeting with other animal rights organizations to tag team on this campaign, but if INTERMIX’s actions have showed us anything, our free free message cannot come just from our side.
I’d like to introduce Wolff Public Relations. INTERMIX is one of their clients, and I think we should all politely remind them that fur is dead! In an interview with one of INTERMIX’s top fur “designers”, Adrienne Landau, Lauren Wolff writes,
“We Canadians love a good fur, and nobody does it quite like Adrienne Landau. To keep stylishly warm in cooler months, we suggest topping off with this designer’s signature furs in fox, rabbit and mink.” … Heartless! Disgusting!
I don’t think Wolff Public Relations understands that not only is fur horrifyingly cruel, but it’s bad for PR. I highly suggest contacting Wolff PR and write them to urge INTERMIX to go Fur free. INTERMIX should stop carrying Adrienne Landau’s Cruela DeVille coats and start selling faux!
Please write them and urge INTERMIX to go fur free!

To Whom It Concerns,
I am shocked to discover that Wolff Public Relations supports the fur industry via INTERMIX clientele. Due to the savage business of fur, any products derived from the suffering and killing of animals should be rejected, and I am respectfully requesting that until INTERMIX discontinues profiting off the exploitation of animals including dropping Adrienne Landau fur products, Wolff Public Relations sever ties with them.
Please watch the undercover footage of the industry promoted: animals are forced to endure deplorable conditions including living in cramped, feces-crusted cages; suffering from sickness and disease; lacking an enriching environment; and being subjected to substandard diets and severe psychological trauma. They are then butchered via anal electrocution, gassing, skinning alive, and forced trauma.

Regrettably, as long as you unnecessarily and selfishly capitalize on the mutilation, torture, and death of animals, I will not financially support you or your associated clients including Intermix and Adrienne Landau . Furthermore, I will share this information with family, friends, colleagues, and members of online communities. INTERMIX, why not act on principle and become a company that promotes compassion fashion? You can create very stylish clothing and accessories using synthetic materials.
Please make both the ethical and responsible decision to discontinue your commercial support of fur immediately: join an increasing body of compassionate businesses and designers who are listening to a concerned and attentive consumer population who refuse to be complicit in the inherently malicious industry of fur farming. I hope this letter finds you willing to scrutinize your own involvement and desire to protect, rather than harm, animals.
Thank you for taking the time to read this important message.
Cyber Action against Air France-KLM

BACKGROUND
Air France-KLM are the number one transporter of laboratory animals globally and for this reason they are the focus of an international campaign. As the last global airline willing to transport animals destined for research laboratories, Air France-KLM have been able to completely dominate the lab animal transportation market. Their network extends to 254 destinations in 111 countries and provides the vivisection industry with a vital link between animal suppliers and laboratories worldwide. With so few airlines now willing to transport lab animals, Air France-KLM’s services have become irreplacable to the vivisection industry and for this reason we must convince them to stop!

Dear Air France-KLM Cargo representative,
I’m writing to you today to express my disappointment and displeasure at the fact that your company continues to transport animals to laboratories, despite overwhelming public and scientific opinion that animal experimentation is both unacceptable and unnecessary.
Animals in laboratories endure extreme suffering in cruel and scientifically pointless experiments, including being forced to inhale noxious gasses, being force-fed chemicals and injected with poisons, before being left to suffer and die with minimal care or consideration for their needs.
I ask that you use your influence within Air France-KLM to bring your company in line with the majority of air cargo transporters who refuse to transport animals destined for the vivisection industry.

Please Urge U.S. Capitol to Halt the Use of Glue Traps: Sample Letter

BACKGROUND
Architect of the Capitol, the agency in charge of maintenance for U.S. government offices, reportedly uses glue traps for rodent control! Glue traps are some of the cruelest products on the market, causing immense and prolonged suffering. Exhausted and terrified, victims die from shock, dehydration, asphyxiation, or blood loss, and death can take days! Victims often rip themselves to pieces in a frantic struggle to escape the sticky mess. Also, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns against using glue traps because of disease risks posed by the many pathogens in the waste of ensnared rodents. PETA implored the agency to consider methods that were less cruel, didn’t pose health risks, and didn’t put such a heavy burden on U.S. taxpayers (glue traps are horribly cost-prohibitive!), but apparently to no avail. Your voice is needed!
Please urge Architect of the Capitol to join the many government agencies that have sworn off glue traps. And forward this alert widely!

Dear Officers Merdon and Malecki,
I have just learned of your agency’s, Architect of the Capitol, use of glue traps to capture and kill mice. Killing the mice using glue traps to do so is an extremely painful and fearfully agonizing experience for animals. These animals are further traumatized trying to free themselves, causing skinning, tearing, ripping, and dismemberment, a profoundly agonizing ritual of attempting to escape for hours upon hours; death sometimes can take days.
This also proves medically dangerous to humans considering that, according to the CDC, glue traps create optimal conditions to spread disease. I would hope any organization that shares a core principle of human health and quality of life, such as yours, would be equally concerned with any disease-spreading forms of rodent control. Interestingly, many government agencies have already discontinued the use of glue traps due to their cruelty and exorbitant cost.
Please consider, instead, using humane traps to capture and release mice in an ethical and painless manner. These can be found at hardware stores and local animal rescue groups, who would be willing to assist you.
Thank you for your time and attention to this important issue.

Institute of Medicine Report Could Spell End of Chimpanzee Experiments

Please click HERE to see if your senators and/or representative are co-sponsers of the Great Ape Protection and Cost Saving Act. If your congressperson is not on the list, click HERE to send an automatic letter.
From PCRM
The Institute of Medicine today released a report that finds that chimpanzee experiments are not needed to develop an HIV vaccine, hepatitis C antiviral drugs, or treatments for a wide range of other human illnesses. The report underscores the need for Congress to pass the Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act. This bill would end chimpanzee experimentation in the United States, the last nation on earth still conducting large-scale experiments on humankind’s closest genetic relatives.
Experts from the nonprofit Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) testified before the IOM during the seven-month report process, providing evidence on the scientific and ethical problems of chimpanzee use in invasive experiments.
The report, written by a panel of scientific and medical experts convened by the IOM on behalf of the National Academy of Sciences, says that most current use of chimpanzees for biomedical research is unnecessary. Regarding hepatitis C research, for example, the report says, “The committee finds that chimpanzees are not necessary for HCV antiviral drug discovery and development and does not foresee the future necessity of the chimpanzee model in this area.”
“It’s obviously cruel to experiment on chimpanzees, and scientifically it’s just not needed,” says John J. Pippin, M.D., F.A.C.C., director of academic affairs for PCRM. “There is just no compelling scientific justification for experimenting on chimpanzees.”
Dr. Pippin, a cardiologist and former animal researcher, submitted testimony on behalf of PCRM for the IOM’s inaugural committee meeting in May. PCRM experts again testified before the IOM committee in August about the medical and ethical reasons for ending chimpanzee experimentation.
Decades of chimpanzee experiments focusing on HIV, hepatitis C, and other diseases have not resulted in effective vaccines. Observational researchers have found that many of these chimpanzees held captive in laboratories and used in experiments suffer from symptoms of depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder. In September, Scientific American called for an end to chimpanzee experiments, and others have echoed the same sentiment.
The bipartisan Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act, legislation which has support in the House and Senate, would phase out chimpanzee experiments and release federally owned chimpanzees to permanent sanctuaries. It would also save taxpayers almost a third of a billion dollars over the next decade.
The United States is the only nation still using chimpanzees in large-scale invasive research. Other nations, including the European Union and Japan, no longer permit such experiments.

URGENT: Call for End to North Carolina’s Cruel ‘Opossum Drop’

BACKGROUND
On New Year’s Eve, Clay’s Corner, a retail store in Brasstown, North Carolina, owned by Clay Logan, is holding its annual “Opossum Drop” event, during which a live, wild, captured opossum will be suspended inside a small, clear Plexiglas cage for hours above a rowdy crowd while being forced to withstand bright and flashing lights, smoke, and a near-constant barrage of loud noises—including live bands, the firing of black powder muskets, and a fireworks display. At midnight, the opossum will be “dropped” (lowered) into the crowd and then released.
Opossum are sensitive, small, wild prey animals who avoid human contact at all costs. Being suspended for hours in a see-through box over a screaming crowd and subjected to excessive noise and smoke would be pure terror for the animal. The smoke and noise can damage an opossum’s sensitive hearing and respiratory system, and the chaos can cause such a shy animal to suffer from severe and potentially fatal stress-induced conditions.
Logan apparently lacks the proper North Carolina permits to hold this animal, and the “Opossum Drop” clearly violates North Carolina law, which states that animals held captive must be treated humanely. PETA has asked Logan to replace the live animal with a stuffed or animatronic opossum, but he’s refused. Now we need your voice!
Please politely urge officials to do everything in their power to end this illegal, cruel act.

SUBJECT
Please cease illegal opossum drop
SAMPLE LETTER
Dear Mr. Myers, Mr. Caveny, and Mr. Cobb:
It has come to my attention that Clay’s Corner, owned by Clay Logan, operates an event called Opossum Drop in which a a live, captured opossum is suspended above noisy crowds, and exposed to a number of stressful, physically damaging, and potentially fatal situations; I am respectfully writing to persuade you to assist in discontinuing the opossum drop or encourage Mr. Logan to use an alternative.
Please allow me to elaborate. Opossums are sensitive, complex animals who experience suffering and joy, have the capacity to nurture complex relationships, and avoid humans at all times. Furthermore, opossums indeed experience pain and react negatively towards extremely stressful occurrences including loud noises, lights, enclosures, fireworks, smoke, and disturbed environments. Additionally, it is my understanding that, lacking the appropriate permits, Mr. Logan is engaged in an illegal activity by using a live opossum.
I hope you will demonstrate a commitment to protect rather than harm animals by using this opportunity to urge Mr. Logan to present a humane, legal event by using non-living alternatives that will not be abused and exploited for folly.
I know your time is limited and I thank you for your attention to this urgent issue.

Russian ban ‘spells the end of Canadian sealing,’ activists say

From The Globe and Mail
By Gloria Galloway
Canada’s biggest market for seal skin has closed its doors, saying it will no longer accept the pelts in any form – a move animal-rights activists say heralds the end of this country’s commercial seal industry.
Russia, along with Belarus and Kazakhstan, have informed the World Trade Organization that, effective last August, they have banned the import and export of raw, tanned and dressed fur skin of harp seals and their pups.
That follows a similar ban imposed by the European Union, which is being challenged by the Canadian government.
Sheryl Fink, the director of the seal program for the International Fund for Animal Welfare said Monday the ban took her organization by surprise. It was discovered, she said, when members of her group were poring over WTO documents online and noted an entry under Belarus.
“If Russia is 90 per cent of the market, that’s a huge chunk gone, and it’s not a great market to start with,” Ms. Fink said. “So the question is, is Canada going to admit that people don’t want seal products, or are we going to keep fighting this one?”
Rebecca Aldworth, the executive director of the Humane Society International/Canada, said the move demonstrates the global momentum to close the international market for seal products.
“It clearly spells the end of Canadian sealing as so many other trade bans have done over recent years,” Ms. Aldworth said. Her organization, she added, is calling on the federal government offer a one-time buy-out the commercial sealing industry in Canada.
It is impossible to tell exactly what percentage of Canadian seal pelts go to Russia. But the representative of two seal processing plants in Newfoundland was quoted in The Globe and Mail in 2006 as saying 90 per cent of Canadian pelts go to Russia and China and that Russia is the No. 1 customer.
Alan Herscovici, the executive vice-president of the Fur Council of Canada, said his organization was trying to check the veracity of the Russian ban on Monday morning. There have been “false alarms” before, he noted.
“I know that Russia is one the markets that seal skins do sell in. They like seal skins, always have,” he said.
There has been much confusion in the last few years, and markets have been weak because of bans like those in the European Union, Mr. Herscovici added.
But there is no scientific justification for a ban on the seal industry, he argued. “What’s really at stake here is the question is the principle of the sustainable use of wildlife.”

In a recent television commercial for Opium fragrance, Yves Saint Laurent used a leopard. Contact the CEO of the parent company, PPR, and urge him to not only discontinue this advertisement, but to also never use any captive wild animal in future promotions. Also write to Yves Saint Laurent and ask the same.
Be aware that you may get a standard response that the use of the leopard was approved by a “humane” organization. This is meaningless in that any humane organization that approves of using captive wild animals in commercials is not advocating for the animals. The real issue is that wild animals should not be in captivity and should certainly not be exploited for commercial gain. It would be appropriate, therefore, to start your message to the effect that you are not referring to overt animal abuse in the usual meaning of the term. Keeping leopards (wildlife in general) in captivity is the issue and no one can provide the kind of environment and choices so important to the well-being of these individuals.

SAMPLE LETTER
Dear Chairperson Pinault
or
To Whom It Concerns,
I am writing today to express my disturbance regarding a recent television commercial for Opium fragrance in which Yves Saint Laurent used a leopard. You should know that, although not victims of overt abuse, these animals are victims of the captive wild animal industry: a shady collection of deals sacrificing these animals, stealing them from their families and necessary indigenous environments and choices, which are impossible to mimic outside their natural territory, an essential aspect of their well-being. They are then subjected them to routine nonsense, being purposely taught unnatural tricks and actions to use on shows and commercials such as yours.
You are therefore complicit in their abuse, as detailed above. As such, I am requesting that producers implement protocols banning the use of any animals. Although I may be just one voice; it is important to recognize that consumers are increasingly rejecting any type of entity that endorses animal cruelty and are instead choosing products and manufacturers that refuse to participate in the deliberate abuse of animals.
This type of exploitation is unnecessary, unjustified, and unprincipled, its only function to egotistically benefit those who pursue profit at the expense of integrity. Animals have rights to live free from suffering and interference regardless of objections to acknowledge such, and as long as you promote the commodification of animals, complicit in their exploitation, I will boycott Yves Saint Laurent and all related products and share this information with friends, family, and online social networking groups.
Thank you for taking the time to consider this important message.

Please Fax and Ask Pennsylvania Property Owners’ Association to Halt Cruel Bowhunting!

BACKGROUND
Distressed Pennsylvania residents are calling PETA because they are outraged that the Gold Key Lakes Community, a property owners association in Milford, approved the use of cruel bowhunting to control resident deer populations. PETA recently informed association officials of the extreme cruelty of bowhunting, but our concerns have apparently fallen on deaf ears.
Bowhunting is among the cruelest forms of hunting. Bowhunters often spend hours following bloody tracks before finding wounded deer. Many are not found, and their deaths are slow and painful. It can take weeks for them to succumb to their injuries. Families are then torn apart, and young and weak animals starve or die of dehydration.
Please urge Gold Key Lakes Community officials to halt all bowhunts. And forward this widely! If the neighborhood insists on deer control, please share our tips with them.

SAMPLE LETTER
Dear Director Goldberg and President Ruggiero,
I have just learned that Gold Key is considering bowhunting, the cruelest of all hunting methods, of deer populations in a misguided attempt to reduce their numbers in populated areas. Although this proposal is inherently cruel based on its premise alone, it is important to recognize it is based on erroneous information.
Please allow me to illustrate a few of these concerns. First, ecologically, populations will fluctuate according to conditions and naturally-occurring food sources; it is the interference of humans that causes imbalance. To blame and slaughter the deer for human encroachment is both irresponsible and unjustified.
Second, killing deer would artificially increase food supplies to the remaining deer, the consequence of which would be increased reproduction and an ensuing greater deer population. In fact, studies have demonstrated that the continual cycle of seasonal hunting is responsible for a rebound, or larger herd populations in subsequent years.
Third, this type of mass killing using such a brutal type of slaughter in such a central and visible location would certainly adversely affect both visitation and tourism; it would be financially detrimental to move forward with such a cruel and unnecessary killing, and although I do not currently reside in Gold Key I would be unwilling to consider it, or nearby, as a potential vacation destination if this deer cull transpires.
Please instead examine alternative, non-lethal options such as fencing, fertility control, and relocation according to established protocols when using these methods, which have all proven successful in curtailing deer populations.
I know your time is limited and I want to thank you for your attention to this urgent matter.

From Force Change
Target: The Pennsylvania Legislature
Goal: To ban live pigeon shoots in Pennsylvania, the only U.S. state where this activity is still legal.
Each year countless pigeons are netted and transported from city streets to the gun clubs of Pennsylvania where gun enthusiasts can pay to shoot them. In many cases, pigeons are illegally captured in New York and New Jersey and trafficked across state lines to Pennsylvania. The live pigeon shoot follows the same general concept as a clay pigeon shoot, with one serious exception, live birds rather than clay decoys are launched in the air to be used as targets for a group of waiting shooters who wound more than they kill.
Birds that are injured and recovered are killed by having their necks snapped by children called trapper boys; a practice that serves to teach children that it is acceptable to kill animals for fun. The countless birds that are not recovered are left to suffer a slow death from the wounds inflicted by the shooting. The recovered birds are not used for food or other purposes. They are simply thrown in trash.
For decades compassionate citizens and animal rights groups have come together in an effort to pass legislation that would ban this type of legalized animal cruelty in Pennsylvania but lobbyists for the National Rifle Association continue to use their power to fight these bills. According to The Humane Society of the United States, the Pennsylvania State Legislature is once again considering an amendment attached to a bill that would outlaw live pigeon shoots. The Pennsylvania Senate Judiciary Committee voted in favor of this legislation in April, 2011 but it must also be passed by the full Senate in order to become law. Please show your support for this amendment by signing the petition.

In Defense of Animals has filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Defense requesting an investigation into the brutal beating of a helpless sheep by a soldier with a metal baseball bat. This incident, caught on video in Afghanistan, has circulated around the internet, tarnishing the reputation of the U.S. military. The video shows a child looking on and several other soldiers laughing
and supporting the beating. It took 12 blows with the sheep in convulsions and several attempts at escape before the helpless animal finally died. IDA demands that an investigation is conducted into this incident and appropriate action taken for all those involved.
Animal cruelty is punishable under Article 134 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice for “public animals” like bomb-sniffing dogs and military horses. The Commission on Military Justice in 2009 recommended that criminal charges be brought against military personnel who abuse non-public animals like dogs, cats, and farm animals, but it is unclear if the military has heeded the recommendations of the Commission.
This is not the first instance of animal cruelty caught on video. Marine David Motari was filmed throwing a puppy over a cliff in Iraq in a 2008 video. This violent and senseless act eventually led to his discharge from military duty.

1. Background | From Change
Over Christmas break, December 21, 2011, Binghamton University in Upstate New York is planning to slaughter 90% of the deer in their Nature Preserve, at a cost of $20,000.00 dollars +. As we understand, this is NY taxpayers’ dollars.
Julian Shepherd Ph.D., who heads up The Committee of the University Environment, and Dylan Horvath, steward of nature areas at the university, are blaming the deer for eating flowers and for forest regeneration problems. However, their claims are not supported by any scientific evidence. B.U. didn’t even do a deer survey or an environmental impact study.
Many forest experts disagree with the general premise of their claims. “Acid rain is more responsible than white-tailed deer for forests not regenerating … They can kill all the deer, but it will take a lot more than that to fix the forests.”, claims Bill Sharpe, a Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences forest hydrologist, “Penn State Expert Blames Forest Problem on Acid Rain, Not Deer”, Penn State Live, 5/17/02. In a recent landmark study, “Regional-Scale Assessment of Deer Impacts on Vegetation Within Western Connecticut, USA”, Angela C. Rutherford, et al., School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, Yale University, (Journal of Wildlife Management 74(6):1257-1263. 2010) concluded that deer density is not a leading factor determining variation in vegetation impacts. And a recent study at Ohio State University, “Indirect Effects of a Keystone Herbivore Elevate Local Animal Diversity”, Katherine Greenwald, et al., Department of Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology (Journal of Wildlife Management 72(6):1318-1321; 2008) found that the presence of deer is actually helpful to other animal species, and that programs to reduce their populations may be detrimental to a region’s biodiversity. “Culling deer may cascade into affecting plants, salamanders and other creatures in ways we can’t even imagine,” said OSU researcher Katherine Greenwald. “Officials need to know more about the forest ecosystem before making decisions about wildlife management.” Another study showed that some forest understory-dwelling birds benefit from deer-grazing, and that the presence of deer decreased populations of rodents that preyed on ground birds’ nests.
This deer slaughter will not achieve B.U.’s objectives, and trying to keep deer at unrealistic low levels poses an insurmountable challenge. Culling or hunting deer will trigger compensatory reproduction. The deer population will rebound quickly, and deer from adjacent areas will quickly fill the void, leading to an endless cycle of killing.
The forest ecology in B.U.’s Nature Preserve is no different than the rest of the forest areas in New York State. That said, a nature preserve should remain untouched and allowed to evolve naturally without human intervention. In reviewing the history and mandate of B.U.’s Nature Preserve, it said that, ” In order to preserve its natural beauty and intrinsic value it was suggested that hunting, littering, use of motorized or wheeled vehicles, picking of plant life, and harassment of animal life be prohibited throughout the entire area.”
If B.U. wants to create a protected environment to grow wildflowers that can’t be affected by wildlife, then B.U. should explore creative fencing alternatives, or build an arboretum. If B.U. insists on interfering with the natural processes within the Nature Preserve, then a deer contraception program should be considered. Contrary to what Mr. Horvath believes, there are a number of scientific peer-reviewed studies that document deer contraception effectiveness, reducing deer populations by approximately 40-60%.
The DEC spends millions of dollars annually to artificially propagate the deer population for maximum sustained yield for their 3% hunter constituents. Deer populations stabilize on their own in relation to the available food supply. Culling or hunting will only reduce the deer population temporarily and trigger compensatory rebound, which will increase the deer population the following year. Please refer to the article, “The Paradox of Killing Wildlife to Control Populations” (http://politicswildlife.blogspot.com/2010/10/paradox-of-killing-wildlife-to-control.html). And just an update for Mr. Horvath, there are 20-30,000 coyotes (predators) in New York State, i.e. he said that coyotes were hunted out a century ago.
Please send Binghamton University a strong message to stop the deer slaughter, and not to turn their Nature Preserve into a private hunting and killing preserve.
2. Background | From Amazon Watch
The Achuar of the northern Peruvian Amazon are fighting to keep Canadian oil company Talisman Energy out of their ancestral territory, but the company continues to ignore the Achuar’s demands and expand operations. Recent testimony from Salesian Priest Father Diego Clavijo highlights the heightened tensions and risk of conflict caused by Talisman’s “divide and conquer” strategy.
Petition Text
Dear Mr. Alan Murray,
I stand with the Achuar and support their struggle to defend their Amazon homeland from oil drilling and destructive development.
I am deeply concerned about the escalating situation on the ground around your operations in Block 64. Recent testimony from two Catholic priests in the region describe a situation where Talisman Energy is responsible for heightening divisions between indigenous communities which could lead – in their words – to “genocide.”
I understand that the majority of Achuar people of the Pastaza and Morona river basins, represented by the National Achuar Federation (FENAP), have repeatedly called on Talisman Energy to withdraw from their ancestral homeland. I am concerned that attempts to seek “community agreement” are causing division and the risk of conflict.
I write now to demand that Talisman immediately cease divisive tactics on the ground and respect the Achuar people’s demand and cease operations in their ancestral territory.
Yours sincerely,

With the holiday season upon us, the ASPCA has put up forty billboards around Los Angeles and launched an online educational campaign about boycotting pet stores. The goal is for those seeking a dog to adopt from their local shelter if they are able to provide loving homes for a dog.
The Associated Press just released a story about how the ASPCA, The Humane Society of the United States, Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, and others are advocating for a boycott of online and local pet stores which sell puppies. This includes Petland which continues to disregard animals’ well-being by selling puppies from puppy mills.

Following a year-long PETA campaign, the University of Michigan’s (U-M) Survival Flight program has replaced the use of cats in cruel intubation training exercises with modern human-patient simulators. Unfortunately, the program continues to have trainees cut holes into pigs’ limbs, throats, and chests and stab needles into their bones and hearts for trauma training exercises. This still happens even though the school already uses state-of-the-art human-patient simulators to teach the same skills in other courses for nurses and physicians.
“USDA does not expect horse slaughter to resume in the near term … “

OFFICIAL STATEMENT
Recently you signed a petition relaying your concerns regarding horse slaughtering. We wanted to be sure you saw this update to our earlier response to that petition.
Update: Ensuring the Humane Treatment of Horses
By Dr. Elisabeth Hagen, Under Secretary for Food Safety at the USDA
Thank you for writing to relay your concerns regarding horse slaughtering. We appreciate your involvement in the We the People project and value your input on issues facing our country.
The humane treatment of horses reflects the values of our Nation.
Recently Congress lifted a ban prohibiting federal funding for the inspection of horses, which had prevented the slaughter of horses for human consumption for the past five years. While Congress has technically lifted the ban, USDA does not expect horse slaughter to resume in the near term as a number of Federal, state and local requirements and prohibitions remain in place. Furthermore, there have been no requests that the Department initiate the authorization process for any horse slaughter operation in the United States at this time.
While some horses continue to be exported to other countries for slaughter, USDA makes it a priority to ensure that these horses are transported and treated humanely. For example, USDA recently extended protection to horses delivered to collection points prior to export, reflecting the Administration’s commitment to protecting animal welfare.

Request AT&T to stop using wild animals: sample letter
![]()
BACKGROUND | FROM CBYDATA
In one of their recent television commercials, AT&T used a tiger. In June of 2010, they used an orangutan. Despite letters of protest about their use of wildlife in general and the orangutan specifically, it appears that they have not understood the inappropriateness of what they are doing. Contact Randall Stephenson, who is the president, CEO and chairperson, and urge him to not only discontinue the advertisement with the tiger, but to also never use any captive wild animal in future promotions.

SAMPLE LETTER (Always frame your concerns in a polite, but firm manner.)
Dear President Stephenson,
I am writing today to express my disturbance regarding AT&T’s use of wild animals in its advertisements despite continuous written and verbal disapproval. The animals include orangutangs and tigers most recently. You should know that although not victims of overt abuse, these animals are victims of the captive wild animal industry, a shady collection of deals sacrificing these animals, stealing them from their indigenous environments and family, and purposefully teaching them unnatural tricks and actions to use on shows and commercials such as yours.
Therefore, I am requesting that producers implement protocols banning the use of any animals; it is important to recognize that viewers are increasingly rejecting any type of entity that endorses animal cruelty and are instead choosing product and programming options that refuse to participate in the deliberate abuse of animals.
This type of exploitation is unnecessary, unjustified, and unprincipled, its only function to egotistically benefit those who pursue profit at the expense of integrity. Animals have rights to live free from pain and suffering regardless of your objections to acknowledge such, and as long as you promote the commodification of animals, complicit in their exploitation, I will boycott AT&T and all related products. It is important to accept that, what is indeed valuable, is the life itself and the capability to experience emotion and suffering. Please observe this basic moral principle and act with compassion rather than react with cruelty.
Thank you for taking the time to consider this important message.

Another carriage horse drops on the streets of NYC: email the Mayor

Please send sample letter to Mayor Bloomeberg demanding the carriage horse industry ceases to exist. There are two sample letters and both will fit in the character-limited comment field, but please modify.
BACKGROUND | FROM THE HUFFINGTON POST
Another New York City carriage horse has fallen in Manhattan.
Horrified holiday shoppers and tourists looked on as carriage handlers tried desperately to get the white horse to its feet Sunday afternoon near the corner of Fifth Avenue and 59th Street. One onlooker managed to film the struggle and submitted it to the group Win Animal Rights.
Animal rights activist Mary Xanthos blamed the holiday season as putting an extra burden on carriage horses, telling The New York Daily News, “These horses were being worked non-stop, going over and over again, ride after ride without a break.”
A spokesman for the Horse and Carriage Association of New York however, objected to the title of the YouTube video (NYC Carriage Horse Collapses 12/4/11 Copyright Win Animal Rights) telling The News, “No horse collapsed. It caught its toe in the pavement, which is quite common.”
Bret Hopman of the ASPCA tells Gothamist, “the horse has been suspended pending a veterinary exam and won’t return to work until the exam is completed.”
And Kenneth Malone, president of the association, said in a press release, “The carriage industry in New York City is such a public institution that a horse can sneeze funny and some activist is in our faces with a camera to post footage to YouTube.”
Mayor Bloomberg shrugged at the news. “They’re animals and animals and human beings, eventually, we all unfortunately stop continuing and it’s unfortunate when it happens, but that doesn’t mean that you stop doing things,” the mayor said. “You just want to make sure that they’re well treated.”
Animal rights groups have long complained that carriage horses are overworked and aren’t taken care of properly.
New Yorkers For Clean, Safe, Livable And Safe Streets, an advocacy group, have been joined by some local politicians in pushing to pass Intro. 86A, a City Council bill that ups restrictions on horse carriages and aims to eventually replace them with “horseless carriages,” i.e. vintage, turn-of-century, motorized cars.
After the collapse and death of a carriage horse in July, the ASPCA released a statement:
We at the ASPCA express our sadness and concern at this tragic incident. The life of a carriage horse on New York City streets is extremely difficult and life threatening, and the ASPCA has long believed that carriage horses were never meant to live and work in today’s urban setting.
A couple weeks ago, The Horse and Carriage Association Of New York filed a complaint against the ASPCA and NYCLASS. “Both the ASPCA and NYCLASS have made false, misleading and/or deceptive statements about the carriage industry,” the statement said.

SAMPLE LETTER ONE
Dear Mayor Bloomberg,
I am writing today to encourage you to oppose the horse carriage industry. Built around perennial abuse and exploitation, the horse carriage industry is duplicitously disguised as an essential tourist icon of romanticism and history, a grossly inaccurate representation.
Allow me this moment to illustrate. Since the industry is profit driven, current safety or “humane” protocols, being cost-prohibitive, are not observed; indeed, any animal used as a goal to human profit is regarded in a fundamentally cruel and exploitative manner. Specifically, horses are subjected to numerous cruelties and inhumane conditions including respiratory impairment as the result of perpetual inhalation of vehicle exhaust; horses are required to operate under grueling conditions and varied temperatures including high heat, humidity, and frigid cold, impairing their well-being while exhaustively working long hours; neglected appropriate medical care, horses often suffer lameness and other physical conditions; horses are typically serving this industry secondary to previous laboring of racing or farming, enduring lifelong injuries while forced to pull incredibly massive weights upward of 8,000 pounds; traffic conditions being erratic at best creates extremely precarious conditions and potentially fatal accidents; the natural lifespan of horses is dramatically diminished resulting from such dangerous and unpredictable conditions, and they are often retired to slaughterhouses, the final indecency forced upon them by greedy humans.
Pragmatically, horse drawn carriages are a transportation relic, historically essential but currently hazardous to both horses and humans. Although potentially attractive to unaware passengers, the horse drawn carriage industry, as a novelty, is not critical to city tourism; indeed, tourists visit for the culture, theatre, nightlife, and landmarks, and the potential loss of tourism benefits absent horse drawn carriages will most certainly be negligible.
I know your time is limited, and I want to thank you for your attention to this important issue.
SAMPLE LETTER TWO
Dear Mayor Bloomberg,
I and shocked to learn that yet another carriage horse has succumbed to torturous conditions and selfish tourists. We therefore must utilize our conviction to see the industry disband in place of, for example, vintage cars.
Allow me this moment to illustrate. Since the industry is profit driven, current safety or “humane” protocols, being cost-prohibitive, are not observed; indeed, any animal used as a goal to human profit is regarded in a fundamentally cruel and exploitative manner. Regrettably, until the carriage horse industry is banned, I will not visit New York. Please understand that you have the power to make the humane decision to see this realized.
I know your time is limited, and I thank you for your attention to this issue.
