HighestWelfare.Humane.Assured.GoodPractices.Vegetarian. Regenerative.Flexitarian.Lies...

What is the difference between No Welfare, High Welfare, and Highest Welfare when they all require animals to die? Only human comfort, NONE protect the actual animals. The most humane, ethical, and honest Webster-defined "welfare" is NOT exploiting animals - not using, not wearing, not eating, not killing - animals. The only meaningful position is vegan, everything else is just how humans euphemize animals' required suffering and violent deaths: no human exploits animals because they honestly believe that NOT exploiting animals is UNethical or INhumane.

BACKGROUND | SOURCE DIGITAL JOURNAL

In a shocking decision by senior judges in Northern Ireland, Lennox, a Labrador/American Bulldog, has been ordered destroyed. The ruling upholds the decision of two lower courts, to euthanize a dog that has committed no harm.

For two long years, the Barnes family have fought to bring their dog home after he was seized by the City of Belfast in May 2010 and ordered destroyed for being a “pit-bull type” dog. The ruling came in response to an appeal by the family, and upheld the decision of two lower courts who decided under the Dangerous Dogs Act (DDA), that Lennox was a danger to the public and must be euthanized. According to the DDA, a dog’s physical traits could bear influence on how it behaves and “pit-bull” types, like Lennox, are automatically deemed dangerous. In other words, Lennox was measured with a tape measure; he fit the profile, and was seized. Yet Lennox has never threatened to harm a living soul, and even statements from celebrity and recognized canine experts attesting to the dog’s good-nature, have been consistently overthrown in favor of the testimony of one individual, Peter Tallack, a police dog handler and supporter of the DDA.

SAMPLE LETTER

To Whom It Concerns,

Lennox is an exceptionally well-behaved and loving dog; naturally curious and energetic, he loved to play and go on walks, each new encounter a welcomed and joyful experience, each new sight interesting and deserving of innocent scrutiny. Lennox loves attention but does not demand such, and gladly and willingly accepts a stroke, a pat, a glance, and an opportunity to play. His bright eyes are always welcoming, his demeanor gentle, his loyalty infallible; he’ll be your playmate, your confidante, your partner, your sidekick, your solace in a decidedly lonely and uncomfortable world. For this unending loyalty and unquestioning love, Lennox may encounter a journey, not of loyalty or kindness, but of pain and betrayal. Sadly, in an ironic and cruel circumstance, the very people sworn to protect others and dispense constitutionally-sound decisions now bear the potentially unsettling distinction of executioner.

Although the premise of BSL or the DDA  is inherently biased and potentially unconstitutional, it is important to recognize it is based on erroneous information, inaccurate witness accounts, and according to inequitable circumstances. To target Lennox according to one hysterical outburst, impetuous reactions to news accounts, and questionable testimony is pure conjecture and serves no purpose other than creating conflict and dividing the community. This is neither productive nor beneficial.

As one global collective, we applaud Lennox’s determination to survive, and we embrace his loyalty and love even given the shadowy depravity that has colored his previously bright world. We choke on emotion when we are confronted with the cruel reality of the hideous event he may endure and his subsequent love for those around him, unaffected by an act that would leave humans forever scarred by doubt and hesitancy. It would be a shame not to witness your country’s beauty and potential, yet as long as Lennox is condemned unjustly, I will be unable to consider travel to or commerce of such. Please use your office to influence a favorable decision to release Lennox, either to his family or to any of numerous rescues willing to adopt him.

I know your time is limited and I thank you for attention to this urgent appeal.

Immediate! Please send two messages regarding Mazor Farm, sample letters

BACKGROUND | SOURCE FACEBOOK: SHUT DOWN MAZOR FARM

Time for Immediate Action!!

You can Shut down Mazor Farm! In these critical last moments of the struggle to shut down Mazor Farm, an Israeli monkeys breeding farm selling them to horrible experiments, every voice counts. A 22 year animal rights fight is at its peak & needs your act now!!

Demand from El Al’s CEO not to transport Mazor Farm’s primates!!

Please send an immediate email or fax message to Mr. Eliezer Shkedi, CEO of El Al airlines, Israel’s biggest airline company and demand that El Al will keep its policy as of Sep 2010 and reject any request to transport primates from Mazor Farm anywhere.

Additionally, this morning, the Mazor Farm owners have replied to the High Court with their decision to send the 40 monkeys who were born in the farm (after the court prohibited them from sending 50 monkeys who were captured in nature) to SNBL labs, TX USA.

The Israeli animal organizations have filed the court with an urgent request to instruct the farm owners to resubmit a new authorization request for the shipment, as they have changed the details of the original request. We are now waiting to hear the court’s decision and guarantee to do everything we can to stop this shipment.

In the meantime, you can help in the following ways:
1. Share, share, share – the world must know!
2. Write a short (but polite) message on Israel’s Environment Protection Minister Gilad Erdan’s wall:
www.facebook.com/gilad.erdan
And kindly ask him to speed up his plans to abolish the trading of monkeys in Israel for experimentation.
Alternatively, you can write to his email: sar@sviva.gov.il

1. WHOM TO CONTACT

Israel’s Environment Protection Minister Gilad Erdan

Email: sar@sviva.gov.il

SAMPLE LETTER

Dear Minister Erdan,

I am writing today to express my support regarding your decision to cease providing requisite permits to Mazor Farm, a business that breeds and sells monkeys for animal experimentation; indeed, I extend my appreciation for your decision that will influence the closing of Moshav Mazor Farm. Your compassionate resolution will result in an ethical consequence, liberating more 1000 monkeys and relinquishing them to their natural habitat; future ramifications include rejecting additional exploitation, and the lives potentially stolen will be the lives realistically saved.

Thank you for refusing exploitation and instead observing empathy; I trust the overwhelming support acknowledging your courageous and empathetic decision exemplifies the importance of such and is considered when you finalize this declaration. Your moral decision supporting the closing of Mazor Farm will additionally serve as a model to other communities. I extend my gratitude towards you and hope you will accept my gesture of appreciation and respect, as well as my request that you hasten your plans to abolish the trading of monkeys in Israel for experimentation.

Thank you for taking the time to read this urgent message.

2. WHOM TO CONTACT

Mr. Eliezer Shkedi, CEO of El Al airlines

Email: shkedie@elal.co.il

El Al’s fax number: +972-3-9714405

SAMPLE LETTER | COURTESY BUAV

Dear CEO Shkedi,

I was shocked to learn that your airline is potentially involved in the transportation of monkeys from Mazor Farm to laboratories. It is unacceptable that these sensitive animals, ripped from their families and homes, are then subjected to the stress of being packed into small crates and shipped as cargo on airlines to end up in laboratories where they will suffer tremendously in exploiting experiments.

I urge El Al to please observe your ethical policy as of September 2010 and reject any request to transport primates from Mazor Farm to any laboratory. If you reject your own policy and ship these primates, I will not consider flying with your airline.

Thank you for taking the time to read this urgent appeal.

Urgent: Ask Creek Investments to Pull Funding for World’s Largest Foie Gras Farm, send sample message

June 11, 2012
by

Wikimedia Commons

BACKGROUND | SOURCE PETA

Creek Project Investments, the Cambridgeshire-based company behind plans to build what could be the world’s largest foie gras farm in China, has announced that the project is now on hold pending a review of animal welfare concerns. More than 200 hectares of land in Nanchang, Jiangxi province, have been set aside for the factory farm. Three million geese are already at the intensive farm, which, according to the company’s website, would have “a projected total rearing of 100 million geese/ducks within 5 years”. Creek Project Investments has now said that plans are suspended whilst it looks into animal welfare concerns “which may or may not exist”. We urgently need as many people as possible to contact the company, let them know that the animal welfare concerns are very real and urge them to end their involvement in foie gras production permanently.

Foie gras, French for “fatty liver”, is produced by force-feeding ducks and geese huge amounts of grain and fat several times a day until their livers become grossly enlarged. The food is pumped directly into their stomachs via a tube that is forced down their throats. As a result of this cruel process, the birds become sick and lethargic and many have great difficulty breathing, walking and grooming.

Whilst foie gras production is legal in China, it is shameful that a British company is behind this cruel venture when force-feeding is rightly banned in the UK.

Cruelty to animals on this immense scale is almost unimaginable. Please speak out by contacting Creek Project Investments today and urging them to end their involvement in this shameful practice.

Please Pull Your Investment From World’s Largest Foie Gras Farm

SAMPLE LETTER

To Whom It Concerns,

I am writing to ask that Creek Project Investments end its involvement in the cruel treatment of ducks and geese for foie gras. The suffering that birds endure for this “torture in a tin” is rightly condemned by both veterinarians and animal protection groups worldwide; many countries and cities ban foie gras production based on such. To force-feed any animal until his or her liver swells to up to 10 times its normal size is abhorrent. It is shameful that a British company is behind plans to build what could be the world’s largest foie gras farm in China, when foie gras production is illegal in the UK on animal welfare grounds.

Please assure me that your current suspension of plans pending a review of animal welfare concerns will be permanent.

Thank you for taking the time to read this urgent appeal.

Sincerely,

Please write to Urban Decay re: decision to open Chinese market

June 8, 2012
by

Wikimedia Commons

BACKGROUND | FROM CHANGE
Urban Decay has been against animal testing from their inception, but on June 6, 2012, Leaping Bunny has taken away their certification. Their plan is to enter the Chinese market where animal testing is done by the government, thus eliminating their original stance against animal testing.

As a vegan, Urban Decay has been one of the shining lights for the community as a high-quality cosmetics company that we could depend on, but not anymore. Urban Decay’s statement they released about China is hypocritical: if they wanted to make change in the country, they would go there and DEMAND their products to not be tested on animals or they would refuse to sell them.

They are going to see a big change: loss in their American market if they allow this animal testing to go on.

SAMPLE LETTER

To Whom It Concerns,

I am shocked to learn that Urban Decay has made the unfortunate decision to begin marketing products in China, despite China’s animal testing requirement, and despite Urban Decay’s longstanding policy against animal testing.  I am therefore writing to respectfully request that you continue producing items in the absence of animal testing.  Considered archaic and fundamentally flawed, product testing on animals lacks corporate legitimacy and social validation. Furthermore, it is imperative to recognize the existence of ingredients that already have an established, proven safety record for human use. These products, such as those found on the FDA GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) list, can be utilized and manufactured in the absence of deliberately cruel and unwarranted animal experimentation. Urban Decay‘s blatant disregard for animals and its potential decision to implement Chinese testing requirements is irresponsible and negligent.

Furthermore, the attempt to foster an idea that consumers continually support animal experimentation due to some inaccurate notion that it will prevent them from being harmed is unprincipled. Product misuse and abuse can lead to harm regardless of how many animals are wrongfully killed during the product testing phase. In fact, corporate manipulation and exploitation of consumer fear by using deceptive advertising is not only unethical but it is also illegal. As such, if Urban Decay decides to unnecessarily and selfishly capitalize on the mutilation, torture, and death of animals, I will not financially support you; furthermore, I will share this information with family, friends, colleagues, and members of online communities as well.

Please make both the ethical and financially-responsible decision to discontinue any plans to engage in animal experimentation immediately: join an increasing body of corporations who are listening to a concerned and attentive consumer population who refuse to be complicit in the inherently malicious industry of animal experimentation.

Sincerely,

URGENT: Ask Sarasota County, Florida, to Oppose Cruel Hunt

June 5, 2012
by

BACKGROUND | SOURCE PETA

Sarasota County officials will discuss and vote on a proposal that would implement a three-day feral hog hunt in an attempt to control populations in Deer Prairie Creek Preserve. The plan would allow hunters to run down and kill feral hogs with the use of dogs!

When a hog is caught, the dogs play tug-of-war with the animal’s body. They latch on to the hog’s face, ears, or throat, causing painful injuries, until the hunter stabs the animal to death. These hunts also leave orphaned young to starve, and the dogs themselves are often severely injured by cornered feral hogs. Graphic video footage of feral hog hunting with dogs can be viewed here.

If you live in Sarasota County, please attend the meeting, along with everyone you know, and urge Sarasota County officials to stick with humane hog management methods instead. If you cannot attend the meeting or live outside the area, please e-mail officials

Furthermore, when hogs are killed,  more plentiful food sources are readily available to remaining hogs, the result of which is a greater reproductive season and subsequently more hogs.

Please choose the ethical, compassionate decision to protect, rather than harm, animals, and implement non-lethal methods to hog management.

Please write to University of Queensland and protest their use of pigs in terminal experiments

June 4, 2012

Wikimedia Commons

BACKGROUND | SOURCE NON-HUMAN RESCUE OPS

Update from Non Human Rescue Ops and the University of Queensland’s use of animals in terminal experiments.

We have written to UQ again, it appears they have stopped using pound dogs in terminal operations, however greyhounds remain questionable. Pigs are definitely being used and its a great pity that this university feels that pigs are of less value than dogs so they are performing terminal operations on these wonderful animals and killing them like they have no purpose. Killing any animal to teach vet science is not ethical medicine. The oath of medicine is to value life and not kill any patient deliberately. We await their reasons for not teaching ethically and humanely when so many humane options are available to them and their students.

We encourage everyone to write to Glen Coleman at UQ he’s the acting head Veterinary Science Head Of School hosvetsci@uq.edu.au”

Glen Coleman at UQ, the acting Veterinary Science Head Of School

Email: hosvetsci@uq.edu.au

SAMPLE LETTER

Dear Mr. Coleman,

I am extremely disturbed to about the University of Queensland’s use of animals, namely pigs, in terminal experiments for research, the efficacy of which is unproven, demonstrably cost-prohibitive, and lethal, not only on non-human animals, but also on human animals. These experiments subject these sentient animals to enormous suffering and pain, and I respectfully request that you immediately cease your participation in such an unethical practice.

Since animals cannot be substituted for human beings, subjecting them to this exploitative process reflects a blatant disregard for life; how can we teach our future medical professionals ethics while enforcing a course that maims and kills live, sentient beings?  This represents a conflict of interest as well as a contradiction in both morals and actions: if non-human animals are deemed similar enough to humans physiologically, then you must acknowledge that, as sentient beings, they should not be exploited and killed either.  Any other conclusion would be considered a discord and would serve as a detriment to the learning process, especially in such a critical field of study.

Animal experimentation is unnecessary, unjustified, and unprincipled, its only function to financially benefit those who exploit animals. Animals have rights to live free from pain and suffering regardless of your objections to acknowledge such, and as long as you profit on the torture of animals, complicit in their abuse and death, I will continue campaigning on their behalf. Please use the superior alternative, non-lethal forms of experimentation instead.

Thank you for taking the time to read this important message.

The Seals of Nam

BACKGROUND | SOURCE THE SEALS OF NAM

On July 1st, 2012, a quota of 85,000 Cape Fur seal pups are set to be beaten to death in Namibia. The pups are separated from their mothers. They are herded away from the safety of the sea where they are then beaten to death with pick handles. They are stabbed in the throat, often while still alive.

You can help put an end to this!

A further quota of 6,000 adult bull seals will be set. These are to be shot at point blank range so that their genitals can be exported to the East where they are used to make ineffective sex potions for the Asian Market.

We can beat this curelty!

Aside from the cruelty aspect, an independent report shows that seal viewing based ecotourism in Namibia will yield three hundred times more revenue than the massacre and will create a wealth of job opportunities in a country desperate for employment.

This is not just about animals, but people too!!

Cape Fur Seals are a threatened species. They have suffered massive habitat loss, several mass die offs and they are listed on Appendix II of the United Nations Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. (CITES)

With Namibia facing mounting public outcry and increasing consumer boycotts, we the undersigned are urging the Hon. Minister Bernard Esau to immediately end the annual bloodbath, protect the seals with effective new legislation and to allow all Namibians to benefit from this magnificent tourist drawcard.

Please sign and share this petition. Time is running out and thousands of baby seals are going to beaten to death!

Tell True Religion to Drop Fur: send sample letter, fax, phone

To Whom It Concerns,

I am shocked to discover that True Religion has begun selling fur again. Due to the inherently-brutal business of fur farming, any products derived for or from the suffering and killing of animals should be rejected, and I am respectfully requesting that True Religion finally discontinues profiting off the exploitation of animals.

Please watch the undercover footage of the industry you promote: animals are forced to endure deplorable conditions including living in cramped, feces-crusted cages; suffering from sickness and disease; lacking an enriching environment; and being subjected to substandard diets and severe psychological trauma.  They are then butchered via anal electrocution, gassing, skinning alive, and forced trauma.  Why in the world would you WANT to cause such suffering?

FurStop.Com

Regrettably, as long as True Religion unnecessarily and selfishly capitalizes on the mutilation, torture, and death of animals, I will not financially support you or your associated products. Furthermore, I will share this information with family, friends, colleagues, and members of online communities.

Please make both the ethical and responsible decision to discontinue your commercial support of fur immediately: join an increasing body of corporations who are listening to a concerned and attentive consumer population who refuse to be complicit in the inherently malicious industry of fur farming. I hope this letter finds you willing to scrutinize your own involvement and desire to protect, rather than harm, animals.

US Friends: Stop New York’s Shark Fin Trade

June 3, 2012
by

Please click and sign HERE

Background | Source Oceana

The oceans need sharks and sharks need fins.

The demand for shark fins is driving some shark species to extinction. Tens of millions of sharks are caught each year for their fins, and in some places these sharks are finned alive, a brutal practice in which a shark’s fins are hacked off at sea, and the animal is thrown overboard to die.

New York is currently the largest importer and exporter of shark fins on the East Coast, but if we act now, these facts could be history. The New York Senate and Assembly are considering bills that would ban the possession, sale, and trade of shark fins within the state. Sharks are vital to the health of the oceans, and the worldwide shark fin trade is killing them. California, Oregon, and Washington have already passed similar bans – now let’s have New York lead the charge on the East Coast. Sign TODAY to support S6431 and A.7707a and take shark fins out of New York.

Petition Text

I am writing to support S6431 and A.7707a which would protect global shark populations by banning the possession, sale, offering for sale, trade, or distribution of shark fins in the state of New York.  In recent decades, some shark populations have decreased by more than 90%, largely as a result of direct fishing. Each year, tens of millions of sharks are killed for their fins to fulfill the demand for shark fin soup. Because sharks are top predators, removing sharks from ocean ecosystems can destabilize the ocean food web and lead to negative environmental and economic effects. Sharks keep ecosystems healthy by preying on the sick and the weak, which prevents disease and leads to healthier fishes. Sharks also prevent prey populations from growing too quickly, which leads to the damage of corals reefs and seagrass beds.

While shark finning is illegal in the U.S., the trading of shark fins is not and the consumption of shark fin soup continues. The demand for fins as an ingredient in shark fin soup contributes to shark finning, a wasteful and cruel practice that is endangering numerous shark populations around the world.

This bill will reduce pressure on shark populations globally by ending the demand for shark fins in New York. Similar bans have already been enacted in Hawaii, Washington, Oregon, and California and are now being considered in various East Coast states. I strongly urge you to sponsor this important legislation.

Background | Source Care2 PetitionSite

Target: Omar al-Bashir, President of Sudan
Sponsored by: Judy Molland

A young mother found guilty of adultery in Sudan has been sentenced to death by stoning.

Intisar Sharif Abdallah, 20, was tried without access to a lawyer and is being detained with her four-month-old baby.

Even worse, Abdallah admitted to the charges only after her brother reportedly beat her. The man held with her reportedly denied the charges and was released.

She is said to be shackled by the legs and in psychological distress, unable to understand the nature of her sentence. (Arabic, the language in which she is charged, is not her first language.)

Petition Text

Your Excellency,

It has come to my attention that Intisar Sharif Abdallah, the young mother of a 4-month-old is being held in a prison in Khartoum.
Abdallah has been accused of adultery, and is sentenced to die by stoning. However, she was tried without access to a lawyer and only admitted the charges after her brother beat her.

Please squash this sentence against Intisar Sharif Abdallah and release her immediately.
Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.

To: City Council of Carloforte, District of Carbonia-Iglesias, Region of Sardinia, European Fisheries Control Agency (EFCA), International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT), and the European Parliament

Animal Equality has released an undercover investigation revealing the brutal slaughter of bluefin tunas, which takes place each year, between late May and early June, in Carloforte – a city in the district of Carbonia-Iglesias (Sardinia).

The tunas in the Mediterranean Sea are mainly caught by mobile traps, although traditional fixed traps are still used in the ‘tuna slaughter of Carloforte’. The footage reveals the different stages of the slaughter: how the frantic and panicked tunas are stacked on-top of each other, injuring themselves during the capture; and how they are violently struck with harpoons and dragged to the boats, they are then stabbed in the heart and left choking and bleeding to death.

Dr. Lorelei Wakefield veterinarian expert and Founder of University of Pennsylvania ‘Veterinary Animal Welfare Society’, has reviewed the findings and commented:

“Some fish were stabbed deeply in major arteries to bleed them out. Others were simply left to suffocate out of water. None of the tuna died quickly. They all thrashed around in a bloody mess for at least several minutes.”

We are urging the City Council of Carloforte, International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT), European Fisheries Control Agency (EFCE) and the European Parliament to call for the abolition of this cruel practice immediately, and the prohibition of tuna fishing worldwide.

Petition Text

It is incredibly shocking for me to witness the brutality and violence inflicted on blue fin tuna during the slaughter that takes place every year in Carloforte, documented by the organisation, Animal Equality.

The images reveal terrified and wounded tuna writhing in pain during capture, and tuna being brutally harpooned, dragged on board, and stabbed with a knife causing death via exsanguination.

“Tradition” and “culture” should never be associated with this unjustified cruel practice.

Several important studies have documented that fish have a clear ability to experience sensations such as pain and that their behavior is altered by the presence of noxious stimuli. Besides, to justify the brutal killing of blue fin tuna because these animals may feel less stress or pain than other animals (e.g. mammals), or because fish are less intelligent than so-called ‘higher’ animals, is morally unjustifiable.

I therefore request the competent authorities act to abolish this cruel and unjustified practice immediately, and for the international organisations to ban permanently the fishing of these animals worldwide.

Yours sincerely,

PETA

UPDATE | JUNE 6

Thank you to all who responded to our alert regarding pigeons trapped behind a deterrent net at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Manhattan. ASPCA officials have responded to the scene and the net has been opened enough to allow birds to escape. PETA will continue to monitor the situation.

Thank you for your compassion and willingness to act for animals!

BACKGROUND | SOURCE PETA

Live birds are reportedly trapped behind a bird deterrent net at Our Lady of Sorrows Church at 213 Stanton St. in Manhattan. According to callers, several dead birds can be seen on the ground or hanging in the net. PETA called Father Thomas Faiola, the pastor at the church, but he would not give assurances that the church would take action to free the birds before they perish of starvation or dehydration.

Please contact Father Thomas Faiola and politely urge him to open the net immediately, flush out the live birds, and then seal any points of entry to prevent birds from becoming trapped in the future. It is imperative that your correspondence be polite or our campaign will suffer. Call or e-mail:

I respectfully request that you flush out the live birds and then seal any points of entry to prevent birds from becoming trapped in the future.

Animals are sentient creatures, capable of emotions including love and suffering, like human animals.  It is our responsibility to accept this most important tenet and respond to situations accordingly.  Please act with compassion and free the trapped birds before they perish of dehydration or starvation.

Thank you for taking the time to read this important appeal.

Yours respectfully,

URGENT: Implore Organizers to Call Off Puppy Auction

June 1, 2012

BACKGROUND | SOURCE PETA

This Sunday, June 3, the San Antonio Guild of Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles plans to auction off a puppy to the highest bidder at its “Cruise Away with CHLA” fundraising event. PETA has contacted the Guild’s president explaining why live animals should never be auctioned or raffled, but it appears our concerns are being ignored. Now your voices are needed!

Please contact the San Antonio Guild of Children’s Hospital and implore organizers to halt this portion of the auction. Remind them that winners are rarely prepared for the enormous commitment involved in properly caring for a companion animal. Tragic consequences are all too common: Animals are bounced around from home to home, dumped at animal shelters, or locked away in lonely rooms when the novelty wears off.
