What is the difference between No Welfare, High Welfare, and Highest Welfare when they all require animals to die? Only human comfort, NONE protect the actual animals. The most humane, ethical, and honest Webster-defined "welfare" is NOT exploiting animals - not using, not wearing, not eating, not killing - animals. The only meaningful position is vegan, everything else is just how humans euphemize animals' required suffering and violent deaths: no human exploits animals because they honestly believe that NOT exploiting animals is UNethical or INhumane.
Urban Decay Decides Not to Sell in China

Source Urban Decay
Previous alert HERE
After careful consideration of many issues, we have decided not to start selling Urban Decay products in China. While several factors were important in reaching this decision, ultimately we did not feel we could comply with current regulations in China and remain true to our core principles. We know there are many progressive consumers in China who would embrace an opportunity to purchase non-animal tested products – our hope remains that we have the chance to offer Urban Decay products to these consumers someday in the future.
Following our initial announcement, we realized that we needed to step back, carefully review our original plan, and talk to a number of individuals and organizations that were interested in our decision. We regret that we were unable to respond immediately to many of the questions we received, and appreciate the patience our customers have shown as we worked through this difficult issue.
Since our founding in 1996, we have been committed to ending animal testing in the cosmetics industry. As demonstrated by the renewed support we have received from organizations like PETA and the CCIC, this principle remains at our core. Urban Decay does not test its finished products on animals, nor do we allow others to test on our behalf, and we require our suppliers to certify that the raw materials used in the manufacture of our products are not tested on animals. Urban Decay is proud to be 100% cruelty-free.

BACKGROUND
Please contact the London Olympic Committee appealing to them that Foie Gras does NOT belong on the Great “British” menu for the London Olympics. You may use the sample letter below, but please modify so they receive a variety of statements.
Foie Gras is extremely vicious and NOT British! The production of Foie Gras is banned in the UK, but due to free-trade laws it can be imported. Funding and supporting the Foie Gras industry is NOT British and hypocritical.
You will receive a canned response, but please still protest by sending an email, thank you.

To Whom It Concerns,
I am very disappointed to see that foie-gras has been featured extensively in the series The Great British Menu for the London Olympics.
Foie-gras is the grossly enlarged liver of a duck or goose and is essentially a disease, marketed as a delicacy. Birds raised for this ‘gourmet’ cruelty are force-fed enormous quantities of food through a long metal pipe, three times a day. This process of deliberate and painful overfeeding continues for up to a month by which time the birds’ livers have swelled to ten times their normal size. Every year, around a million ducks die during this period of force-feeding.
Foie-gras is not produced in Britain, as the Government has made it clear that its production would contravene existing animal welfare regulations, but sadly it is still perfectly legal to import it.
I am asking you to follow in Californias latest boycott and ban of Foie Gras; please stop promoting it as being British and take it off the Olympic menu.
Thank you for taking the time to read this urgent appeal.

BACKGROUND | SOURCE FOUR PAWS
We all feel for Nastia who was snatched away from her mother. The young cub is still traumatized – as the FOUR PAWS video shockingly reveals. However, there is another victim in this story: It’s Nastia’s mother, Masha.
As the director of Lutsk zoo says bluntly in an interview, female bears are regarded as mere baby producers. In the wild a female bear only gives birth every three years and remains with her cubs for two years. The bears in Lutsk are forced to have babies every year due so that profits can be made with the offspring. The consequence is not only that, as the zoo director confirms, females have health problems and are simply worn out, but they also have to watch powerlessly as their children are taken away far too early. This causes extreme psychological distress and leads to constant mourning, year after year.
Masha, Nastia’s mother, can clearly be seen panicking as her baby is torn away from her in the FOUR PAWS video. We can only imagine what she’s going through. As with humans and many other mammals, the maternal instinct is very strong in bears, and losing their baby can cause great damage to their psychological health. To suffer a loss of a baby every year is something nobody would want to experience.
As mentioned above: There are two victims in this story – we must not and shall not forget this. FOUR PAWS will do everything it can to ensure a reunion between Nastia and Masha.
Update June 29th 20:00:
At this moment, we are pulling out all the stops: Our head of the Ukraine project Dr. Khalil is in permanent contact with authorities and other institutions to initiate a confiscation as quickly as possible. As soon as we can say anything more definite, we will go public with all the information.
We will do all we can to bring the bear cub back to her mother.

Dear Consul,
I am writing to encourage you to exert your influence in reuniting a baby bear, Nastia, with her mother, Masha. Nastia was kidnapped from her mother in the zoo in Lutsk in Ukraine’s northern Volyn region.
Although you may assert that humane protocols must be followed in accordance with zoo protocols, the visual evidence validates the position that these directives are often ignored in favor of management; nevertheless, establishing a threshold of humane treatment is ambiguous at best, these standards being implemented by those with questionable interests, its oversight managed by those who profit from exploitation. As such, it is important to recognize that both Nastia and her mother, fundamentally valuable beyond monetary benefit, are being exploited in demonstrably cruel and unnecessary manners, languishing after being brutally separated. All animals share maternal instincts; having a child stolen is an act unforgivable on behalf of any animal, human or non-.
Please watch the following video taken by the Four Paws organization when Nastia was forceably removed from her mother:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=iCjWdCjqLfs
I hope you make the compassionate decision to intervene with the goal of discontinuing the imprisonment and separation of Nastia and her mother, and I am hoping you have the authority to relinquish her back to Masha. However, as long as the Ukraine continues to unnecessarily capitalize on the exploitation, imprisonment, and maltreatment of her, I will not financially or commercially support you. It is important to recognize that consumers are increasingly rejecting those destinations that are complicit in the suffering and unnecessary treatment of animals by shifting their loyalties to those areas that do not participate in such gross exploitation of them, and I hope that you will extend such an ethical and empathetic gesture as well.
I know your time is limited and I thank you for your attention.

BACKGROUND | ZANESVILLE TIMES RECORDER
A Zanesville man, who allegedly cut the throat of a dog Tuesday to get his girlfriend’s attention, is facing misdemeanor charges including cruelty to a companion animal.
Justin C. Smith, 32, could face 180 days in jail for the incident that occurred just before 7 p.m. in the 300 block of Luck Avenue.
Smith appeared Wednesday in front of Judge William Joseph in Muskingum County Municipal Court and pleaded not guilty to one count of cruelty to a companion animal and one count of resisting arrest, court records show. He remains in jail on a $1,500 cash or surety bond.
If found guilty, Smith faces up to 180 days in jail and a $1,000 fine on the cruelty charge and 90 days in jail and a $750 fine on the resisting charge. He is scheduled to have a hearing July 10.
Zanesville police initially were called to Luck Avenue to investigate a report of a woman covered in blood, Sgt. Jim DeVoll said.
When DeVoll arrived, he found not only a woman covered in blood, but a small dog with its throat cut.
DeVoll said Smith told him he had cut the dog’s throat because “I could.” Smith then asked him to shoot the dog to “put it out of its misery,” DeVoll said.
DeVoll said Smith told him he wanted to get his girlfriend’s attention, so he took the dog, which weighed about 20 pounds, to the yard and slit its throat with a utility knife.
“The dog was bleeding everywhere and was barely alive,” DeVoll said.
DeVoll said he had to wrestle Smith to the ground to place him under arrest. When Lt. Chris Rice arrived at the scene, DeVoll had Smith under arrest and police took him to the Zanesville City Jail.
The dog had died by the time police were able to arrest Smith.
According to Zanesville Court records, Smith has been arrested before. In 2011, Smith was arrested and charged with criminal damaging, criminal trespassing and disorderly conduct.
He was arrested in January on a charge of disorderly conduct and was ordered to attend three AA meetings per week. He is scheduled for a hearing for that case Sept. 6.

RE: Case #CRB1200944A
Dear Prosecutor Tarbert,
I have learned of an extremely disturbing and malicious case of animal cruelty in which Justin C. Smith/Young deliberately caused the suffering and death of a dog. This alleged incident occurred on Tuesday, June 26, and I am writing to request you impose the maximum sentence.
When I try to imagine what possible motive animal abusers entertain for subjecting their animal victims to such malicious, heinous acts of brutality, I fail, but I am thankful for a lack of cognitive understanding and rationalization. To voluntarily engage in such malicious behaviour suggests sadistic tendencies, and Mr. Young’s actions, causing unmitigated pain and suffering, demonstrates his incontrovertible lack of morality regarding other living beings and a gross disrespect for the law. In fact, a person who shows such a remarkable lack of compassion towards non-human animals has the ability to show such indifference towards human animals. This link between animal and human abuse has been established, and if we excuse Mr. Young’s criminal behaviour, of which he has an extensive history, or agree to a lesser punishment, we only harm ourselves by unjustly nullifying cruelty as acceptable behaviour.
Please respect the victim by penalizing the guilty and demonstrate your commitment to justice, responsibility, and integrity, attributes unquestionably necessary in an law enforcement setting: rejecting cruelty by maintaining an unyielding position towards it would be a model for all community members and would serve to characterize this type of behaviour as both impermissible and punishable.
I know your time is limited and I thank you for your attention to this urgent issue.

Hermit Crabs and Reptiles Need Your Help

BACKGROUND
Wild and exotic animals suffer tremendously in captivity. PETA has asked the executive of Sunsations Inc.—a retailer that specializes in tourist sundries, swimwear, and apparel—to adopt a policy that prohibits the sale and display of hermit crabs, chameleons, bearded dragons, and snakes in all 35 of its stores. Sadly, our concerns appear to have been casually dismissed.
Every year, countless people give in to temptation and purchase wild or exotic animals on a whim as “pets,” but very few have the knowledge required to meet the animals’ specialized husbandry needs or the inclination to commit to the years-long responsibility of caring for them. Stolen from the wild, peddled as cheap trinkets, confined to small “habitats,” roughly handled, fed improper diets, and forgotten when the novelty wears off, these animals are doomed from the moment that they are born.
With so many harmless products to offer tourists, Sunsations could make a profit without causing suffering. Please join us today in urging the executive of Sunsations to do the right thing and stop selling live animals at the company’s stores!

If you live in New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, or Florida, please also call your local Sunsations store and ask its management to stop selling live animals!

Dear Executive Sibony,
I was shocked to learn that Sunsations sells live animals, and I am respectfully requesting you discontinue. Please allow me to elaborate. Animals are sentient creatures with the capacity to experience complex emotions; being subjected to noisy environments, loud noises, bright lights, and continuous interference from unconcerned and curious consumers causes untold suffering, including confusion, pain, and fear.

Please make both the ethical and financially-responsible decision to discontinue selling live animals immediately: join an increasing body of corporations who are listening to a concerned and attentive consumer population who refuse to be complicit in the inherently cruel industry of animal commerce.

Urgent: Ask Church to Ditch Cruelty to Animals

Wikimedia Commons
UPDATE | July 3
Comment from Mr. Joey Lyons, one target of protest:
The scheduled pig scramble has been officially canceled. Thank you for your comments.
BACKGROUND
Social, intelligent, and loyal, pigs are highly sensitive animals who enjoy communicating with each other, making nests, and relaxing in the sun. But on Wednesday, July 4, the Bridge Foursquare Church in Christiansburg, Virginia, has scheduled a “Greased Pig Scramble” at its “Old Fashioned July Fourth Celebration.” Such events typically involve frantic groups of people chasing, grabbing at, and tackling terrified pigs in pens lined with screaming crowds. Being trucked to and fro and subjected to the violence and general chaos of these events is a horrific and hazardous ordeal for the pigs, who often sustain severe injuries such as broken limbs and backs. PETA has asked the church to replace this cruel activity with any number of humane alternatives, but to no avail. We need your help today!
Please politely urge the Bridge Foursquare Church to cancel the Greased Pig Scramble. And please, spread this alert far and wide!

Dear Associate Pastor Lyons and Ministry Director Sellers,
I am disturbed to learn that on Wednesday, July 4, the Bridge Foursquare Church in Christiansburg, Virginia, has scheduled a “Greased Pig Scramble” at its “Old Fashioned July Fourth Celebration.” Such events typically involve frantic groups of people chasing, grabbing at, and tackling terrified pigs in pens lined with screaming crowds. Being trucked to and fro and subjected to the violence and general chaos of these events is a horrific and hazardous ordeal for the pigs, who often sustain severe injuries such as broken limbs and backs.
I am therefore respectfully urging you cancel this unjustified and cruel event. Pigs are marvelously intelligent and sentient creatures, capable of love, pain, thought, and suffering; when you subject pigs to such indecent treatments, you not only condemn them to fear and agony, but you also demean yourself and establish that you are unsympathetic.
Furthermore, when you actively engage in this type of cheap entertainment in front of children, and, in fact, have children actually participating in such, you are demonstrating that animal abuse and disrespect are socially-approved activities, and the link between animal and human abuse is represented. I therefore urge you to cease this exploitation and demonstrate that yours is a community cognizant of the importance of animal protection rather than animal abuse.
Thank you for taking the time to read this urgent request.

SAMPLE LETTER ONE
To Whom It Concerns,
I am disturbed to learn that your establishment is still selling foie gras, the production of which inflicts incredible suffering and cruelty upon sentient animals. As such, I respectfully request you take immediate steps to eliminate foie gras from your product list.
Foie gras, French for “fatty liver,” is made from the grotesquely enlarged livers of male ducks and geese. The birds are kept in tiny wire cages or packed into sheds. Pipes are repeatedly shoved down the birds’ throats, and up to 4 pounds of grain and fat are pumped into their stomachs two or three times every day. The pipes puncture many birds’ throats, sometimes causing the animals to bleed to death. This cruel procedure causes the birds’ livers to become diseased and swell to up to 10 times their normal size. Many birds become too sick to stand up. The birds who survive the force-feeding are killed, and their livers are sold for foie gras.
Globally, people have spoken out against the cruelty of foie gras. In 2004, as you know, California passed a law banning the sale and production of foie gras, effective this year; his Holiness Pope Benedict XVI denounced foie gras, the force-feeding as being in violation of Biblical principles; and foie gras production has been outlawed in the U.K., Germany, the Czech Republic, Finland, Luxembourg, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, Denmark, and Israel.
As such, I respectfully request you please reconsider and make the compassionate and ethical decision to ban foie gras. You may be interested to know in addition to those people and places indicated above, many regional chefs and colleagues have recently removed foie gras from their menus, and I would love to inform my friends and acquaintances that you have joined them by also rejecting this torture and eliminating foie gras. Until such a time, however, I maintain the only ethical decision is to promote a boycott of your establishment and visiting instead the ones that do not sell foie gras.
I look forward to a positive response, however, so that I may visit you again.
Please feel free to watch the following video illustrating in disturbing detail the inherent cruelty of foie gras production:

SAMPLE LETTER TWO
To Whom It Concerns,
You are profiting from Foie Gras an extreme form of animal cruelty. Please stop!
The very fact that production of foie gras is prohibited by law in the UK does, I feel, speak for itself. It has been banned in several other EU member states, and will be banned in the state of California effective 1st July 2012.
Foie gras is produced by force-feeding confined ducks or geese massive quantities of food, via a mechanised pump, several times a day for up to three weeks. At the end of this fattening period, the birds’ livers are swollen up to ten times their natural size. The birds are then slaughtered, and their livers are sold as “foie gras.” These conditions precipitate considerable casualties, and the mortality rate of animals in foie gras production far exceeds that of other animal industries. Some birds die when the metal feeding tube rips open their throats; many others die of ruptured internal organs or asphyxiation when food becomes impacted in their throats and digestive systems. Many are so physically debilitated and in so much pain by the end of the force-feeding period that they are unable to stand or walk.
As Roger Moore recently said, “I have seen few things so revolting and shaming as the horrendous routine cruelty to ducks and geese that goes into the production of one of the world’s so-called culinary delicacies, foie gras…this barbaric trade shames everyone who connives to keep it going, by eating the stuff, serving it or stocking it in their grocery shops.”.
I am working hard with many others to demand a complete ban on the force-feeding and use of birds in foie gras production in the European Union, and I request that you lead the way and make a reputable decision to remove this disgusting “delicacy” from your dishes immediately.
Thank you.
Yours faithfully,

Save and release Lennox: one petition

Please click on and sign HERE
Petition Text
The undersigned give their signature in support and demand for the release of Lennox from council authorities who was wrongly removed from his loving family home simply for the way in which he looks. Lennox has never done any wrong yet he has still been branded as of Pit bull Type by people who are untrained and unsure what the pit bull breed looks like. Lennox is clearly an American Bull cross and has never shown any aggression toward anyone or anything. If a human was torn from his family home, locked up in inappropriate and unsuitable premises for the way in which he looked then we would deem it as racism and pure hatred, why do it to this beautiful animal? Free Lennox now as the eyes of the world are watching!
*Below follows an extract from Lennox’s owners:
“Lennox is a loveable 5 year old family member. He’s an American Bull dog cross that we have owned since he was a little pup. On Wednesday the 19th May 2010 he was taken from our family home by Belfast City Council as they believe he falls under the dangerous dogs act for Northern Ireland. The Council, without seeking any proper professional guidance declared Lennox to be a breed of “Pitbull Type” and so they wish to kill him simply because he has the appearance of said breed. Lennox has never attacked anyone or anything yet the council have removed him from his home where he lives with my wife, myself, our 12 year old Daughter and his soul mate Juicy, a 2 year old female boxer. Belfast City Council are pressuring our family to sign him over to them to be destroyed; however, we feel the need to fight his case, he cannot speak but we will be his voice! If this was a human we would declare this racism. We ask every kind hearted person for your support, don’t let them murder him.”

Sandia National Laboratories’ Livermore, Calif., facility admits to PETA that it is poisoning ground squirrels. We offered the facility advice regarding humane ground-squirrel control, and although we were told that Sandia would attempt to minimize the use of bait stations where feasible, the company did not agree to halt the use of cruel poisons entirely.
Poisons are horribly cruel—they cause convulsions, vomiting, internal bleeding, gradual cardiac collapse, and a variety of other reactions that result in immense suffering and a slow, agonizing death. The most common poisons take several days to kill! And orphaned young end up dying of starvation and dehydration. Poisons also pose risks to dogs, cats, and “nontarget” wildlife (including federally protected birds) who make contact with tainted bodies.
Please contact representatives of Sandia National Laboratories and politely urge them to remove all remaining poison and employ only humane and effective wildlife control methods.

Dear President Hommert, Mr. Holland, and Communications Officer Janes,
It has come to my attention that the Sandia National Laboratories facility in Livermore, California, admits that it is poisoning ground squirrels. It is my understanding that Sandia would attempt to minimize the use of bait stations where feasible, but that the company did not agree to halt the use of cruel poisons entirely. Please allow me this opportunity to elaborate my protest.
These animals are targeted as a response to objections over their presence, and the use of the poison has been chosen as the preferred method of death. Poisons are horribly cruel—they cause convulsions, vomiting, internal bleeding, gradual cardiac collapse, and a variety of other reactions that result in immense suffering and a slow, agonizing death. The most common poisons take several days to kill. And orphaned young end up dying of starvation and dehydration. Furthermore, this poison can also affect other non-target wild and non-wild animals, including family pets and those who maintain an endangered definition.
Of additional concern is that killing the squirrels artificially increases food supplies to the remaining squirrels, the consequence of which is increased reproduction and an ensuing greater population. In fact, studies have demonstrated that the continual cycle of seasonal culls is responsible for a rebound, or larger population, in subsequent years.
As such, I respectfully request that you remove any remaining poison and work with particular groups to develop alternative, humane solutions to killing these animals. These creatures are sentient and deserve our compassion and respect, not our brutality and violence.
I thank you for your attention to this matter.

The Suwannee River Water Management District in Oak Park, Fla., is considering leasing its lands to bowhunters in an attempt to raise funds for land management activities. Reportedly, the district delayed moving forward with the proposal until July, but the plan for bowhunting remains on the table! Your voice is needed today!
Bowhunting is among the cruelest forms of hunting. Bowhunters often spend hours following bloody tracks before finding wounded deer. Many are not found, and their deaths are slow and painful. It can take weeks for them to succumb to their injuries. Families are then torn apart, and young and weak animals starve or die of dehydration.
Please urge Suwannee River Water Management District officials to ditch bowhunting—and then forward this message widely! The district can humanely capitalize on natural areas by charging visitor-use fees for hiking, biking, and kayaking!

Dear District Officials,
It has come to my attention that the Suwannee River Water Management District in Oak Park, Florida, is considering leasing its lands to bowhunters in an attempt to raise funds for land management activities. Please allow me to illustrate a few of my concerns.
First, killing deer artificially increases food supplies to the remaining deer, the consequence of which is increased reproduction and an ensuing greater deer population. In fact, studies have demonstrated that the continual cycle of seasonal hunting is responsible for a rebound, or larger herd populations, in subsequent years.
Second, bowhunters often spend hours following bloody tracks before finding wounded deer, if they look at all. Many deer are not found, and their deaths are slow and painful. It can take weeks for them to succumb to their injuries. Families are then torn apart, and young and weak animals starve or die of dehydration.
Third, this type of mass killing using such a brutal type of slaughter in such a central and visible location would certainly adversely affect both visitation and tourism; it would be financially detrimental to continue with such a cruel and unnecessary killing, and although I do not currently reside in Florida, I would be unwilling to consider it as a potential vacation destination if this bowhunt continues.
Please act ethically and with compassion and cancel a potential bowhunt; the district can humanely capitalize on natural areas by charging visitor-use fees for hiking, biking, and kayaking.
I know your time is limited and I want to thank you for your attention to this urgent matter.

Dear Editor,
I was shocked to learn of the suffering that has been inflicted upon untold numbers of cats for decades by the University of Virginia Medical School and the administration’s stubborn insistence on the continued use of live cats to teach pediatric intubation technique to inexperienced medical residents and EMTs. There are superior, humane, and readily available alternatives, such as the “neonatal simulator,” the Laerdal Neonatal Intubation Trainer. The archaic, inaccurate, and torturous teaching methods practiced currently at the intubation lab at UVA are obsolete, inhumane, and absolutely unacceptable.
As the founder of the growing group of animal advocates from all over the world who are appalled by these barbaric practices, we are committed to persuade UVA President, Teresa A. Sullivan and Steven T. DeKosky, MD, Dean of the UVA School of Medicine, to adopt the alternatives offered by modern scientific technology. We insist that they release into our custody the cats currently used for intubation technique training, and replace their medieval and inhumane intubation lab with purpose-built, anatomically correct neonatal simulators, as are currently in use for this purpose in 95% of North American universities.
128 university medical schools in the US have switched all of their programs to simulators, including neonatal simulators. A recent study has shown that use of simulators has resulted in a 45.5% increase in level of learning and perfection of technique, and 52.2% show the same level of learning and technique when compared to use of live subjects (canine and feline).
We are appalled that UVA would repeatedly put these animals through a procedure, up to twenty times a day, every day, causing them horrible trauma and stress. Furthermore, when done incorrectly, the procedure can cause serious injury to these poor animals.
Why would a prestigious and respected University such as UVA continue to use such archaic training methods when superior and humane alternatives exist? Where is the compassion in these scholars and doctors sworn to uphold the highest of ethics and to “do no harm?”
Animals are sentient beings, capable of thought and emotion, fear, pain, and suffering. We are pleading with the UVA Medical School administration and students to acknowledge these important characteristics shared by humans and animals. We must teach our medical students, who will be dealing with so much human illness and misery, to have a keen sense of empathy and sincere consideration for others’ suffering. Respect for life, compassion and concern for the welfare and right to live free of suffering are necessary qualities for our future health care providers.
Sincerely,

Background | Source Four Paws
Even after long negotiations, the City of Kharkiv won’t implement the well-proven FOUR PAWS strategy of neutering, vaccinating and releasing stray dogs. Shortly before the signing of the cooperation agreement, essential sections of it were removed, although the Ukrainian cities of Kiev, Lviv, Donetsk and Zaporozhe accepted the exact same sections and have launched the stray care project successfully.
FOUR PAWS believes the changes would mean that the project will not be implemented properly and the ending of the dog killings by the authorities would not have been guaranteed. These conditions, however, are essential for a successful implementation of the project. There won’t be any compromise over the welfare of dogs and other animals nor on the quality of care, as the head of the Ukraine project, Dr. Amir Khalil, confirmed on site.
Help us to guarantee a humane solution for the stray dogs: Send a protest email to the Ukrainian authorities today.
Petition Text
Online appeal for the City of Kharkiv to stop killing dogs
Dear President YANUKOVYCH,
Dear Prime Minister AZAROV,
Dear Minister for Environment STAVYTSKYI,
Dear Major of the City of Kharkiv KERNES,
I am closely following FOUR PAWS’ initiative in Ukraine where they are implementing a humane way of reducing the stray dog population in a long-term and sustainable way. I am delighted to read in various news reports that progress has been achieved in the cities of Kiev, Donetsk, Lviv and Zaporozhye and I would like to thank those responsible for supporting this project and making it happen.
However I am outraged to learn that one of the four EURO 2012 cities – Kharkiv – is still not willing to accept the same conditions that the other cities have already agreed to. Professional neutering, vaccinating, caring and releasing of stray dogs (including ear tagging) is key to the project being successful.
I therefore strongly urge you to study the position currently held by the city of Kharkiv and ask you to officially announce the ending of dog killings and the beginning of close co-operation with FOUR PAWS who can implement humane methods of dealing with the stray dog issue.
Yours sincerely,

The hypocrites at the BBC are defending creating the GREAT BRITISH MENU using Foie Gras. The production is banned here, but they are promoting Foie Gras: “The nation’s most ambitious chefs are striving to create a breath-taking menu for a stunning Olympic feast,” and, “We’re talking about pushing the boundaries to show Olympians what food at the highest level is all about.” They also write, “We think it is important to recognise that the focus of this programme is on producing a menu for a banquet, not questioning or analysing the methods by which the various ingredients are produced.” I find this disgusting and this is promoting the importation of a banned product. Additionally, it is funding the Foie Gras industry and allowing Foie Gras to be “acceptable” and its not! Please show them that their defense in all of this is wrong..

SAMPLE LETTER
To Whom It Concerns,
I am shocked to learn that foie gras, the production of which inflicts incredible suffering and cruelty upon sentient animals, is being offered as part of the Great British Menu for Olympians. As such, I respectfully request you take immediate steps to eliminate foie gras from your offered programs.
In 2004, California passed a law banning the sale and production of foie gras, effective this year; his Holiness Pope Benedict XVI denounced foie gras, the force-feeding as being in violation of Biblical principles; and foie gras production has been outlawed, as you know, in the U.K., and also in Germany, the Czech Republic, Finland, Luxembourg, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, Denmark, and Israel.
As such, I respectfully request you please reconsider and make the compassionate and ethical decision to ban foie gras from your programming. You may be interested to know in addition to those people and places indicated above, many regional chefs and colleagues have recently removed foie gras from their menus as it serves no purpose or tradition.
Please feel free to watch the following video illustrating in disturbing detail the inherent cruelty of foie gras production:

Thank you for your attention to this urgent issue; I look forward to a positive response.

Dear BBC,
Thank you for your response. Whilst I find it totally unsatisfactory, I do welcome the opportunity to make my case to the Editorial Complaints Unit.
Whilst I may support the views of certain groups, I want to make it clear that the views below represent and agree with my own personal views – and I wish them to be treated accordingly.
I find the libertine attitude of the BBC when it comes to the use of foie-gras deeply disturbing. I do not accept that foie-gras is British food and I am not sure how you can justify that assertion. I also do not understand how you can compare foie-gras to other food stuffs regularly used on the corporation’s cookery shows. Whilst it is certainly true that there are other debates to be had on the wider subject of the use of meat and dairy, I do not think it is helpful to move away from what is the core complaint in this instance. Namely that we are talking about a product that is illegal to produce in Britain because it would break existing animal welfare guidelines. Indeed, the EU has now banned the production of foie-gras in any country that does not currently have an industry. That is the important distinction and that is why I believe that the BBC should make an ethical ruling in this case.
I also reject the notion that it would be impractical to prevent foie-gras from being used in BBC cookery programmes. Surely you have measures in place to prevent chefs from cooking animals protected by CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora). What about dog or cat meat from South Korea or China or how about horse meat? Would the BBC be happy for chefs to use these if they were feeling “creative and adventurous”?
The BBC editorial guidelines state that: “Across our output as a whole, we must be inclusive, reflecting a breadth and diversity of opinion.” It also says: “… the omission of an important perspective, in a particular context, may jeopardise perceptions of the BBC’s impartiality.” Despite this, I am not aware of the BBC ever examining the serious welfare implications of foie-gras production in your programming. Yet, currently, foie-gras is being actively promoted without any objective criticism regularly on your cookery shows. I assert that is a serious breach of your editorial guidelines and certainly does bring into question the BBC’s impartiality.
Indeed, how can the BBC claim with regards to its use of foie-gras?: “Impartiality lies at the core of the BBC’s commitment to its audiences. We will apply due impartiality to all our subject matter and will reflect a breadth and diversity of opinion across our output as a whole, over an appropriate period, so that no significant strand of thought is knowingly unreflected or under-represented. We will be fair and open-minded when examining evidence and weighing material facts.” Without any debate on the BBC about the ethics about the use of foie-gras I would strongly argue that this area is “… knowingly unreflected” and “under-represented”.
The guidelines also state that: “Contributors expressing contentious views, either through an interview or other means, must be rigorously tested while being given a fair chance to set out their full response to questions.” I would argue that using foie-gras is expressing a contentious view, yet none of the chefs have been challenged about its use on air. Again, this is a clear failure to follow guidelines and I would ask why is this the case? The guidelines also state that: “We must not knowingly and materially mislead our audiences with our content.” I would argue that the BBC is misleading audiences by not balancing the use of foie-gras by also telling audiences about its contentious nature.
Finally, I would also like reiterate that I find it deeply offensive that my licence fee is being used to fund programmes that uncritically feature a product that causes abject suffering to tens of millions of birds each year to produce a product that would be illegal to produce in this country. Again, I believe that this is the majority view and so therefore is likely to breach your guidelines.
I look forward to your response and I request you tell me what avenues of complaint are open if I am not satisfied with your response.
Yours faithfully,
[your name and address] important

Save Lennox (Law) site
BACKGROUND | SOURCE DIGITAL JOURNAL
In a shocking decision by senior judges in Northern Ireland, Lennox, a Labrador/American Bulldog, has been ordered destroyed. The ruling upholds the decision of two lower courts, to euthanize a dog that has committed no harm.
For two long years, the Barnes family have fought to bring their dog home after he was seized by the City of Belfast in May 2010 and ordered destroyed for being a “pit-bull type” dog. The ruling came in response to an appeal by the family, and upheld the decision of two lower courts who decided under the Dangerous Dogs Act (DDA), that Lennox was a danger to the public and must be euthanized. According to the DDA, a dog’s physical traits could bear influence on how it behaves and “pit-bull” types, like Lennox, are automatically deemed dangerous. In other words, Lennox was measured with a tape measure; he fit the profile, and was seized. Yet Lennox has never threatened to harm a living soul, and even statements from celebrity and recognized canine experts attesting to the dog’s good-nature, have been consistently overthrown in favor of the testimony of one individual, Peter Tallack, a police dog handler and supporter of the DDA.

SAMPLE LETTER
To Whom It Concerns,
Lennox is an exceptionally well-behaved and loving dog; naturally curious and energetic, he loved to play and go on walks, each new encounter a welcomed and joyful experience, each new sight interesting and deserving of innocent scrutiny. Lennox loves attention but does not demand such, and gladly and willingly accepts a stroke, a pat, a glance, and an opportunity to play. His bright eyes are always welcoming, his demeanor gentle, his loyalty infallible; he’ll be your playmate, your confidante, your partner, your sidekick, your solace in a decidedly lonely and uncomfortable world. For this unending loyalty and unquestioning love, Lennox may encounter a journey, not of loyalty or kindness, but of pain and betrayal. Sadly, in an ironic and cruel circumstance, the very people sworn to protect others and dispense constitutionally-sound decisions now bear the potentially unsettling distinction of executioner.
Although the premise of BSL or the DDA is inherently biased and potentially unconstitutional, it is important to recognize it is based on erroneous information, inaccurate witness accounts, and according to inequitable circumstances. To target Lennox according to one hysterical outburst, impetuous reactions to news accounts, and questionable testimony is pure conjecture and serves no purpose other than creating conflict and dividing the community. This is neither productive nor beneficial.
As one global collective, we applaud Lennox’s determination to survive, and we embrace his loyalty and love even given the shadowy depravity that has colored his previously bright world. We choke on emotion when we are confronted with the cruel reality of the hideous event he may endure and his subsequent love for those around him, unaffected by an act that would leave humans forever scarred by doubt and hesitancy. It would be a shame not to witness your country’s beauty and potential, yet as long as Lennox is condemned unjustly, I will be unable to consider travel to or commerce of such. Please use your office to influence a favorable decision to release Lennox, either to his family or to any of numerous rescues willing to adopt him.
I know your time is limited and I thank you for attention to this urgent appeal.
