What is the difference between No Welfare, High Welfare, and Highest Welfare when they all require animals to die? Only human comfort, NONE protect the actual animals. The most humane, ethical, and honest Webster-defined "welfare" is NOT exploiting animals - not using, not wearing, not eating, not killing - animals. The only meaningful position is vegan, everything else is just how humans euphemize animals' required suffering and violent deaths: no human exploits animals because they honestly believe that NOT exploiting animals is UNethical or INhumane.
Milk Of Human Kindness Denied To Dairy Cows
Source Forbes
By James McWilliams
Recent reports of mothers purchasing tainted breast milk online has sparked a discussion not only about regulating the underground trade in breast milk, but the legitimacy of human “milk sharing” in the first place.
Although considerable evidence shows that breast milk is much healthier than formula, critics of the practice still find donating breast milk to be problematic. As one milk donor summarized a common reaction in a Huffington Post piece: ”Ewww, it’s weird.” The “ick” response only intensifies when the issue involves human adults drinking human breast milk.
Interestingly, few consumers who are offended by the traffic in human breast milk have a problem with drinking milk from cows. Given that drinking the milk of one’s own species provides the most natural source of nutrition known to mammalian life, it’s strange–or perhaps just a testament to the marketing geniuses in the milk industry–that everyday consumers of conventional bovine milk rarely pause to ponder the implications of supping on the stolen secretions of another species.
“Many of us assume that milk is as innocuous a product as an apple,” writes Sherry Colb, Professor of Law and Charles Evans Hughes Scholar at Cornell University School of Law. “We have absorbed this message repeatedly from a very early age.” And as Gary Francione, Distinguished Professor of Law at Rutgers, has famously said, “There is probably more suffering in a glass of milk than a pound of steak.”
Perhaps the most unpleasant fact to consider about cows’ milk destined for human consumption is that it almost certainly required a heifer’s forced impregnation. Female cows are strapped to a rack (common slang often refers to the device as a “rape rack”) and inseminated with semen stored in a massive syringe. There are 9 million dairy cows in the United States. Nearly every one of them suffers immensely from the results of this experience. (Although, as this description suggests, the process itself is no picnic.)
Left to her own devices after giving birth, a mother cow would feed her calf for nine to twelve months (not to mention play with her calf, teach her calf, protect her calf, and nuzzle her calf). But because the cow’s milk has been reserved for human consumption, the calf is forcibly removed from the mother soon (and sometimes immediately) after birth. Mother cows have highly developed emotions. They will bellow for days, pace the spot where they gave birth, and stop eating. Then they’ll produce a season’s worth of milk and be led straight back to the rape rack.
The mother’s offspring, depending on sex, will face one of two fates. Male dairy calves become “veal calves.” Some of them are slaughtered while only a few days old, others within a few months–it all depends on the kind of meat desired by the market. Because of this connection, boycotting veal–a boutique expression of consumer awareness–is a pointless gesture if dairy products aren’t boycotted as well. The female dairy calves, for their part, follow in their mothers’ footsteps. They’re fattened and prepared for impregnation at the age of fourteen months.
The normal lifespan of a female cow is around 20 years old. The typical dairy cow, who goes through several rounds of forced impregnations, experiences a drop in milk production after five years. Dairy farmers cannot survive financially unless heifers are producing milk at maximum capacity. As a result, dairy cows not only routinely develop mastitis, but they enter the gates of the abattoir somewhere between the ages of 5-7. The vast majority of the nation’s cheap hamburger meat comes from the bodies of these “spent” dairy cows.
The cycle described here has nothing to do with scale. It happens on family farms and on factory farms. It’s endemic to the project of forcing one species to produce milk for another. It’s a reality that escapes milk carton narratives and Got Milk billboards. It’s as systematically exploitative as anything humans do.
And it’s certainly a lot weirder than drinking human milk.

Please Oppose Deer Killing in Helena, Montana

Wikimedia Commons
Please click HERE to sign and send letter
Since 2008, at least 670 urban deer have been killed by Helena’s Police department, and 130 more deer are slated to be killed in 2013-14. Helena’s killing program costs about $15,000 per year, and causes pain, suffering and cruel death to deer families by trapping and the use of bolt guns.
In its own brochure, Living with Deer, Montana’s state wildlife agency, Fish, Wildlife and Parks (FWP) states that “the best solution may be a greater understanding and tolerance of deer.” Why does FWP not adhere to its own recommendations? FWP and the city of Helena choose killing over a much better, humane and sustainable life-confirming method of fertility control – why?
At least 6.5 million deer were killed by hunters in 2011 nationwide, nearly 82,000 deer in Montana alone. State wildlife agencies, who work for hunters, have been producing deer as living targets for decades causing deer numbers to rise from a historic 500,000 to a staggering 20-30 million across the nation. Hunting increases reproduction in surviving deer, in fact this is the very premise for growing deer for the guns, and bows and arrows: Manage deer at half of its carrying capacity, and achieve the greatest number of “surplus” animals.
Killing deer increases reproduction–wildlife fertility control decreases reproduction.
One of the best examples to show how fertility control reduces deer reproduction is the fact that a 60% reduction of free-roaming deer occurred on Fire Island National Seashore between 1995 and 2005. According to Dr. Jay Kirkpatrick, one of the leading experts in fertility control research, “Fertility Control works—and it works well!”

Help Sunder, an Elephant Chained and Beaten, Finally Gain Freedom
Please click HERE to sign and send letter
Sunder, a 14 year–old Indian elephant, is supposed to be living in a sanctuary. Instead, he is being chained and beaten. Undercover video footage just released by PETA India reveals a malnourished–looking Sunder, chained by two legs, writhing in pain and struggling to stand as a mahout (handler) strikes him repeatedly with a wooden pole.
For six years, Sunder was chained and abused at the Jyotiba temple in Kolhapur, India, but the Maharashtra Forest Department and Project Elephant gave orders to retire Sunder to a sanctuary. Instead, Maharashtra Member of Legislative Assembly Vinay Kore, who had given the elephant as a “gift” to the temple, sent him to be chained in an old, dark poultry shed in Warananagar, near where this footage was recorded.
Please use the form HERE to urge authorities to transfer Sunder to the Wildlife SOS elephant centre in Mathura immediately.

Please help save the deer in Rock Creek Park, second appeal

DC Nature
BACKGROUND
Your help is needed to save the deer—fawns, does, and bucks—in Rock Creek National Park in Washington, DC, before the National Park Service resumes slaughtering them this winter.IDA is part of a growing coalition working on this campaign, and your assistance is critical to help stop this killing plan.
We sued the Park and lost the lawsuit last March. The NPS then killed 20 deer. This was the first time in the park’s 123-year history that NPS has allowed the killing of any wildlife in Rock Creek Park. We have also sent petitions to halt further killing of RCP’s deer to the NPS, and we have filed the opening brief for the appeal of our suit.

SAMPLE LETTER
To Whom It Concerns,
National Park Service (NPS) has hired sharpshooters to massacre deer at Rock Creek Park in Washington D.C. in a misguided attempt to reduce deer numbers in populated areas, even though numbers remain stable. Although this hunt is inherently cruel based on the premise alone, it is important to recognize it is based on erroneous information.
Please allow me to illustrate a few of these concerns. First, ecologically, populations will fluctuate according to conditions and naturally-occurring food sources; it is the interference of humans that causes imbalance. To blame and slaughter the deer for human encroachment is both irresponsible and unjustified.
Second, killing deer artificially increases food supplies to the remaining deer, the consequence of which is increased reproduction and an ensuing greater deer population. In fact, studies have demonstrated that the continual cycle of seasonal hunting is responsible for a rebound, or larger herd populations, in subsequent years.
Third, this type of mass killing using such a brutal type of slaughter in such a central and visible location would certainly adversely affect both visitation and tourism; it would be financially detrimental to continue with such a cruel and unnecessary killing, and although I do not currently reside in Washington D.C., I would be unwilling to consider it, or nearby, as a potential vacation destination if this deer cull continues.
Fourth, the slaughtered animals won’t be the only victims as newborn fawns may be left to starve!
Please instead examine alternative, non-lethal options such as fencing, fertility control, and relocation according to established protocols when using these methods, which have all proven successful in curtailing deer populations.
I know your time is limited and I want to thank you for your attention to this urgent matter; I look forward to a positive resolution to this situation.

Chinese animal rights campaigners lambast cat and dog meat trade

BEIJING – Animal rights campaigners have launched a poster campaign urging Chinese diners to turn down cat and dog dishes, with the group calling for the creatures to be considered “friends not food”.
The 279 adverts were put up in 14 cities including Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, Hong Kong-based campaign group Animals Asia said.
Cat and dog meat are not widely eaten in China but can be found at some restaurants, particularly in the south, where they are sometimes considered specialities.
But as the country has grown wealthier pet ownership has increased, and more than 30 million households now keep a cat or dog, according to research group Euromonitor.
Animals Asia appeared to be trying to tap into that growing demographic of pet owners.
One poster showed a small girl sitting with two dogs while a human hand aimed a pair of chopsticks at one of the animals.
“What you just put into your mouth could have been a child’s partner in growth,” the advertisement read.
“Be healthy. Say no to cat and dog meat.”
On its website Animals Asia said the posters, announced earlier this month, aimed to inform the public of health risks from eating cat and dog, and were intended “to prompt people to re-evaluate why they’d eat animals they might otherwise consider friends not food”.
China does not have any laws to protect non-endangered animals.
The animal rights movement in the country remains small but it is growing, with volunteers banding together to mount rescues of dogs and cats from trucks transporting them to restaurants where they are served as meat.
Around 600 cats stuffed into wooden crates and on their way to such a fate were rescued after a truck crash in January.
A convoy of trucks carrying about 500 dogs to be sold as meat was stopped by volunteers on a highway in Beijing in 2011 and the animals retrieved.
Irene Feng, dog and cat welfare director for Animals Asia, highlighted the uncertainty that accompanies eating such meat.
“The truth is, if you eat dog or cat then you have no idea where that meat is coming from or how safe it is,” she said on the website.
Numerous abandoned cats and dogs are taken from the streets while pets are stolen and taken to “horrific meat markets”, Feng added.
“We believe that, faced with this knowledge, most people would find such a meal entirely unappetising.”

Campbell, the cat set on fire in Philadelphia on Nov. 10, has found his forever home.
The Pennsylvania SPCA announced that Campbell will be adopted by Lieutenant Stephen Paslawski, a 14-year-veteran firefighter currently stationed with Engine Co. 45 in Philly’s Strawberry Mansion section.
Paslawski was one of the first to inquire about adopting Campbell. They knew he was the right choice to help Campbell move on from the horrific abuse he suffered
“When I saw the story about Campbell, I was disgusted that anyone could do this to any animal. I had recently put another cat I had down due to a large tumor, and with me being a firefighter, Campbell being burned, and the loss of my other cat, it just seemed like a perfect fit.
Our first meeting was amazing. After a few minutes of petting him in the cage, he put his paws up on me and climbed onto my shoulder as if to say, I choose you. I knew right then it was meant to be. He’ll have a loving home for the rest of his life.”
~ Stephen Paslawski
Campbell will stay in the PSPCA hospital for a few more weeks while his severe burns continue to heal. Once cleared to leave, Campbell will go home with Lt. Paslawski and his other cat, Tink.
Tyrique Hall and Jose Sanchez were charged with criminal conspiracy, possession of an instrument of crime, and cruelty to animals and each face up to ten years in jail.
Have a wonderful life, Campbell! We can’t take away the pain he suffered but thanks to Lt. Paslawski, he will have his happily ever after.

Shocking video of dogs having their teeth pulled out in name of medical testing before being put down sparks outrage
Source Mail Online
By Ashley Collman
Georgia Regents University is drawing criticism from animal rights activists who claim the school is euthanizing dogs in ‘unnecessary’ dental experiments.
The Humane Society posted a video last week, taken as part of a three-month undercover investigation, which shows dogs having their teeth pulled, replaced with implants and then euthanized to test bone samples.
Two days after the video was released, activists organized a protest on the campus calling for the end of animal testing, waving signs that said ‘Humanity: not just for humans’ and ‘Dogs should not die for dentures’, according to the Augusta Chronicle. Another demonstration is scheduled for December 7.
The undercover video, narrated by actress Kim Basinger, focuses on a dog named ‘Shy Guy’ used as a test subject. Shy Guy and others, Bassinger says, were bought from ‘unscrupulous dealers’ and put through ‘unnecessary suffering’.
Another dog is shown at the end of the research process, having been euthanized so that researchers could pull a little piece of jaw bone to sample.
Humane Society spokesman Stephanie Twining says that researchers use the bone sample to compare GRU’s own dentures to that of a competitor.
While using dogs for this kind of research is legal, the activists believe it is still a moral breach.
The video also points out that GRU gets its dogs from a dealer that is under investigation by the USDA.
The USDA did in fact file a complaint against the university’s dealer – Kenneth H Schroeder – in September saying he improperly obtained dogs, impeded an inspection of his operation in Wells, Minnesota and provided substandard care for dogs there.
Mr Schroeder is a random-source class-B dealer which means he can get dogs from auctions, ‘free to a good home’ ads, animal control, and even shelters to resell to research facilities.
From 2005 to 2012, GRU obtained 186 dogs from Mr Schroeder. The six used in dental experiments were obtained in November 2012, operated on in March and euthanized in May. However, there are no allegations that the dogs obtained by the university were improperly obtained.
And NBC News points out that GRU is far from the worst offender when it comes to using dogs in experimental research.
Central Carolina Community College used 50 dogs in its programs in 2012, twice as much as the 22 GRU reported.
And that’s nothing compared to the 1,158 Duke University used in 2011, including 101 defined as ‘Column D’ – to be used in ‘experiments…involving accompanying pain or distress to the animals for which appropriate anesthetic, analgesic, or tranquilizing drugs were used.’
GRU has since responded to the video, saying that dogs are used ‘infrequently’ in university research, and that all received anethesia during surgery and pain medication afterwards.
‘The research being done with dogs is neither frivolous nor unnecessary, as alleged by the investigation, and is performed in order to develop safe, effective dental procedures for people,’ said Dr Mark Hamrick, GRU’s Senior Vice President of Research in a statement.
The investigation has so upset one GRU undergrad, she plans on switching schools.
Pre-veterinary science student Hannah Kellems said it took her about two hours to be able to watch the video start to finish without looking away.
Seeing the whole video straight convinced her and another student to transfer schools.
‘What kind of veterinarian would I be if I stuck at a school that was potentially abusing animals? That goes against everything I’m for,’ Ms Kellems told the Aiken Standard.

Taiji Cruelty: Activists Target Japanese Slaughter of Dolphins; Defensive Officials Say You Can Pet Them Before You Eat Them

Common Dreams
Source Common Dreams
By Abby Zimet
Japan has restarted its annual, brutal killing of dolphins in Taiji, but thanks in part to the film The Cove – which sparked international opposition and reportedly helped reduce demand for the once-popular, now-mercury-infused dolphin meat by two-thirds – activists are waging an increasingly visible battle against the slaughter. In addition to protests, petitions, observers, flash mobs, Tweetstorms, Facebook pages and home-grown groups like Flippers Japan, Anonymous says it has hacked 22 Japanese government sites and will launch #OpKillingBay next week to protest the “shameful” hunt. And in what has been dubbed “the most barbarous bit of mixed messaging” in response to the “unfavorable circumstances,” defensive Taiji officials say they will create a petting zoo and theme park where people can swim with the dolphins before then eating them at the cafe – once, that is, they have been driven in helpless pods into traps, where they are killed by driving a spike through the spine at the base of their neck. Ah, capitalism.
“In the summer, swimmers can enjoy watching the mammals that are released from a partitioned-off space…This is part of Taiji’s long-term plan of making the whole town a park, where you can enjoy watching marine mammals while tasting various marine products, including whale and dolphin meat.” – town official Masaki Wada.

Norwegian army placed on strict vegetarian diet one day each week

Vegan Muffuletta Wikimedia Commons

By Heather Saul
The Norwegian military has announced plans to introduce ‘meatless Mondays’ into army diets, in a bid to battle a more unusual enemy – climate change.
Troops will be placed on a strict vegetarian diet once a week to reduce the amount of ecologically unfriendly foods they eat, whose production can contribute heavily to global warming.
Military spokesperson Eystein Kvarving told AFP the move was “a step to protect our climate”. He said: “The idea is to serve food that’s respectful of the environment.”
Kvarving said the initiative was not designed around saving money, but was instead about “being more concerned for our climate, more ecologically friendly and also healthier.”
The new dietary regime has been trialled at some of Norway’s larger bases and military bosses now plan to roll it out across all units. They hope to reduce their meat consumption by 150 tonnes per year.
Their scheme has been praised by The Future in Our Hands (FOH), a Norwegian organisation that aims to reduce the consumption of natural resources by society. FOH claim an average Norwegian will eat more than 1,200 animals in their lifetime.
”The defence ministry deserves a lot of praise because it’s taking climate and environmental issues seriously”, the group’s director, Arild Hermstad told AFP.

The Ultimate Pillow Fight
How do down feathers often make it into pillows, comforters, and jackets?
HERE’S HOW:

Terrified, screaming birds are grabbed by their wings and pinned by their necks as workers painfully tear their feathers from their bodies, often leaving gaping wounds that are sewn shut without any pain relief.
Down is used for pillows, bedding, coats, camping equipment, and more–but it’s super-easy to avoid by always choosing cruelty-free down alternatives!

Give Turkeys a Reason to Say “Thanks!”
FACT: More than 45 million turkeys are slaughtered each year for Thanksgiving.
Just in time for the holidays, PETA’s Thanksgiving video, “Thanks!” takes viewers on a harrowing journey with one boy and a group of turkeys, all destined to become holiday meals. Watch above now!
For most birds headed to the dinner table, the first time that they feel the sun on their feathers is on their way to the slaughterhouse, where they are hung upside down by their weak and crippled legs before their heads are dragged through an electrified “stunning tank,” which immobilizes them but does not kill them.
Many of the terrified birds dodge the tank and, therefore, are completely conscious when their throats are slit. If the blade fails to slit the birds’ throats properly, they are scalded alive in the tank of hot water that’s used for feather removal.
Turkeys are intelligent, social creatures who enjoy listening to music, and younger turkeys bond closely with their parents. In nature, young turkeys typically stay with their mothers for the first five months of their lives. Knowing how much we have in common with turkeys, it’s hard to watch this video without thinking, “What if someone did this to me?”
YOU CAN HELP!
Now is your chance to give turkeys something to be thankful for this holiday season! Pledge not to eat turkeys on Thanksgiving—or any other day!

Catalonia seeks ban on animal circuses

Madrid – Political leaders in Catalonia on Tuesday launched a bid to ban circus shows using animals in the northeastern Spanish region, where bullfighting was ended two years ago.
Lawmakers proposed a bill in the regional parliament to “modify the animal protection law and include a ban on using animals in the circus,” said one of the deputies, Jordi Rull.
“Circuses can be attractive and do different and fascinating things that draw adults and children, without needing to use animals,” he said, adding that the number of animal circuses had declined in the region.
The bill is backed by five of the seven parties in the parliament which between them hold a majority of seats, said Rull, a lawmaker of CiU, the Catalan nationalist party that governs the region.
The text decries the treatment of circus animals which it says are obliged to perform “unnatural” acts in the circus and undergo “violent training methods”, and develop nervous disorders when kept in small spaces.
Catalonia, home to a strong pro-independence movement, passed a law in 2008 recognising animals as having “physical and psychic sensitivity”.
In July 2010 the parliament there approved a ban on bullfighting and the last bullfight was held there in September 2011 before the ban came into force in 2012.
The Spanish animal rights group Libera says 133 towns in Spain, 99 of them in Catalonia, have already put a stop to circus shows with animals.
