HighestWelfare.Humane.Assured.GoodPractices.Vegetarian. Regenerative.Flexitarian.Lies...

What is the difference between No Welfare, High Welfare, and Highest Welfare when they all require animals to die? Only human comfort, NONE protect the actual animals. The most humane, ethical, and honest Webster-defined "welfare" is NOT exploiting animals - not using, not wearing, not eating, not killing - animals. The only meaningful position is vegan, everything else is just how humans euphemize animals' required suffering and violent deaths: no human exploits animals because they honestly believe that NOT exploiting animals is UNethical or INhumane.

Free The Dogs: Take Action Today to Stop Their Suffering and Death
In Defense of Animals

IDA’s new Free The Dogs campaign staff has uncovered cruel and wasteful research that caused the suffering and deaths of hundreds of puppies and adult dogs, as well as the waste of millions of taxpayer dollars. Funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and conducted at Wake Forest University (WFU), the dogs in this study were forced to undergo invasive procedures and were then killed.

Our staff was shocked to learn that the NIH funded a study which attempted to fix a problem that does not exist. The researchers used dogs to explore a link between the use of a heart-lung machine and permanent brain dysfunction following cardiac surgery. However, there is no association between use of the heart-lung machines and long-term brain dysfunction following cardiac surgery. Permanent brain dysfunction is due to the coronary artery disease itself and not after-effects from having used a heart-lung machine.1,2

Although the theory of a link has been discredited and their studies have not improved cardiac surgery, nor have they published any of their related results, the researchers continue to waste tax dollars and use dogs as disposable test tubes.

Tell the USFWS to Deny Import Permit for Black Rhino Parts

In Defense of Animals

The Dallas Safari Club recently auctioned off a hunting permit for a Namibian black rhino. The winner of the auction will now need to obtain a permit from the US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) to import the body parts of a rhino (the trophy) into the U.S.

Only about 5,000 of the critically endangered black rhinos still exist in the wild, with 1,800 remaining in Namibia. Poaching is the leading reason why black rhinos are struggling for survival. Trophy hunters pay big bucks to shoot rare and endangered animals because all they care about is the thrill of killing, under the guise of conservation. They degrade beautiful and majestic wild animals to lifeless, dead body parts they mount on walls.

Protect black rhinos, not the interests of trophy hunters.

VICTORY! The King Amendment is Dead

In Defense of Animals

The King Amendment will not be included in the Farm Bill!

The Farm Bill has been finalized and the highly controversial King Amendment has been removed. The King Amendment claimed to protect interstate commerce, but in reality it was designed to undermine animal welfare laws enacted by individual states.

Thanks to letters and phone calls from dedicated animal advocates like you, our representatives and senators decided to reject the dangerous and unconstitutional King Amendment to the Farm Bill. This is a big win for animals!

Lonely Abandoned Rabbit Rescued by IDA Staff

In order to start the new year with a bang  (or a hop, as luck would have it), it seems that IDA’s Guardian Campaign Director, Anita Carswell, was fated to rescue and become the guardian of yet another rabbit, along with her partner, IDA’s all purpose fix-it and build-it man, Brendan Montgomerie.

The call came in on the cold and windy second evening of the new year.  A very small domestic rabbit was spotted by mutual friends who were walking their dogs on part of the grassy field surrounding one of the marinas in Richmond, California. With only a carrier in hand, Anita looked beneath the car the rabbit had hopped under. Brendan went around to the other side, and in a sheer moment of bunny magic, the rabbit ran up to him and licked both his hands. It was an instant later that she was in the carrier and brought home under the watchful eyes of Anita and Brendan’s previously rescued rabbits, Azalea and Everest.

The next day, Buttercup was checked out by wonderful staff members of House Rabbit Society (HRS) in Richmond. She had a severe case of ear mites and was underweight and starving.

Leave Animal Testing in the Dust!

January 31, 2014
by

Olympian Nick Symmonds is super-fast. He’s so fast that he’s a world-champion runner—and he’s a champion for animals, too. Nick and his rabbit companion, Mortimer, are urging everyone to leave animal testing in the dust by never buying products that are tested on animals.

Every year, hundreds of animals—including rabbits, mice, guinea pigs, and rats—are injected with chemicals, poisoned, and killed in product tests. All for no good reason! The truth is, there are plenty of animal-friendly testing methods for companies to use.

Curious about your favorite products? Have no fear! peta2 has the best searchable database ever, allowing you to find out if a company tests on animals just by typing in its name! It’s crazy-simple. Check it out!

An Autistic Activist Responds To Temple Grandin

January 30, 2014
by
grandin1

A cow caught in the center track restrainer of a Temple Grandin livestock handling system.

OC Comment: Temple Grandin is a welfarist who designs slaughterhouses meant to lessen the stress on animals.  Rather than maintaining that killing animals is altogether wrong, as an abolitionist does, Ms. Grandin instead attempts to diminish the stress of the killing “experience” on animals.  This is an essay written in opposition of such.

The following essay was written by autistic author, activist and co-founder of Autism Network International, Jim Sinclair. Sinclair noted that he wrote this in “response to Temple Grandin’s writing about her work in the slaughter industry, especially as described in Thinking In Pictures.”

If you love something, you don’t kill it. I didn’t need to spend time in a squeeze box to learn that. Love is not killing.

If you know what another being feels–not just how you feel when you touch it–then you know that living things want to remain alive. It doesn’t matter if they’re not afraid of death before they know what’s going to happen to them. In the moment when the killing happens, they know, and they want to stay alive. I have seen this, and I have felt death happen. I haven’t seen as much of death as someone who is obsessively drawn to slaughter factories, but I’ve seen enough to know. Life does not consent to be killed. I don’t need a Ph.D. in animal science to recognize that.

Dying as a natural process is not the same as killing a healthy living creature. I have witnessed sudden death from injury, and gradual death from aging or disease. They’re not the same. (I have not witnessed deliberately inflicted death, because I will not stand by and allow killing to happen in my presence.) It’s irrelevant if a middle-aged scientist can say that she doesn’t fear death, that she understands it as a natural part of life. Almost all the beings whose lives she helps end are immature or just barely mature. Almost none of them are close to natural death. They’re not ready to die. If someone were to shoot or stab or electrocute the middle-aged scientist today, she might find that she’s not ready to die either.

If you understand life, you know that it wants to continue. If you feel life throbbing under your touch, you know it’s desecration to set your hand to stop that living pulse. If you love something, you don’t kill it.

There’s a special technique involved in tying a hangman’s noose so the victim is killed instantly by a broken neck, rather than slowly by strangulation. I suppose it’s part of a hangman’s professional expertise to learn to tie this knot properly. That expertise doesn’t make the hangman a caring or compassionate person.

The hangman’s knot, the guillotine, the electric chair, the gas chamber, and the lethal injection were all designed to make deliberately inflicted death less painful to the victim. But I’ve never heard the inventors or the users of these technologies hailed as great humanitarians. I’ve never heard them praised for their great empathy toward the lives they’ve ended.

Certainly it takes some ingenuity to invent new equipment. I’m a pretty smart person, but my expertise with knots is limited to being able to tie my shoes, to make a slip knot and a square knot. I tie these knots the way others taught me to tie them; I’ve never invented a new kind of knot by myself. If I were to try to design a knot that could quickly and painlessly kill someone, I’d never be able to figure it out. Whoever invented that knot had a type of mechanical creativity and skill that I don’t have.

But if I did have it, I’d use it for other purposes. I wouldn’t need to invent a way to kill with a knot, because I would never be willing to participate in any way in killing a bound and defenseless person. Skill and ingenuity are not the same as empathy and caring.

And love is not the same thing as killing. If you love something, you don’t kill it. It’s as simple as that.

IDA places anti-trapping billboard in Indiana

January 29, 2014
by

IDA

IDA

OC Comment: OC adamantly opposed any type of killing, not just traps.  This is a protest against trapping, but comments can include an additional dispute against ALL trapping.

BACKGROUND SOURCE IDA

IDA is taking the fight against trapping to the trappers’ backyard. IDA has placed an anti-trapping billboard in the hometown of the largest US-based pro-trapping organization, the National Trappers’ Association in Bedford, Indiana. The billboard states, “Trappers Murder Pets,” and asks the question, “Is Your Dog Next?” The billboard features Pearl, a loving companion dog, deliberately trapped and killed in Hebron, Indiana in December 2012. IDA offered a $2500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person who killed Pearl, but no arrest has yet been made.

Every year during trapping season, trappers scatter traps like land mines across both public and private property. Trapped animals endure incomprehensible psychological and physiological trauma, suffering from pain, fear, and terror in addition to hunger, dehydration, exposure to freezing temperatures, and predation by other animals. Frequently, beloved animal companions like Pearl are also caught by these traps and gravely wounded or killed.

IDA is increasing public pressure to end this cruel and senseless practice once and for all! We encourage everyone to email (ntaheadquarters@nationaltrappers.com) the National Trappers’ Association to let them know you saw the ad and politely tell them your thoughts on it and on the practice of trapping. Please also share the ad through social media. A copy of the ad can be downloaded here: http://www.idausa.org/downloads/trapping-kills-pets.jpg.

SAMPLE COMMENT

To Whom It Concerns:

Trapping is a crippling, archaic, and horrifically abusive form of killing.  Animals are sentient creatures, like humans, who experience pain, suffering, love, and terror.  Subjecting them to any type of death, trapping including, is an offense against humanity.  We can be better as people if we choose to accept this most basic form of recognition and tenet. Animals deserve compassion and respect, not subjective maiming, torture, and killing.

Thank you for considering this urgent appeal.

Two quick and easy ways to kick SeaWorld while it’s down

January 28, 2014
by

Since the release of the film Blackfish, it seems like most people these days can’t think about SeaWorld without also thinking about the sad lives of the lonely animals it imprisons.

Did you know that in the wild, orcas swim up to 100 miles a day? At SeaWorld, they live in tiny tanks with hardly any room to swim around, which causes them to be stressed, bored, and depressed, like this one is:

Repetitive, harmful behavior is pretty common at SeaWorld, too, like what this orca, who banged his head on a landing platform, did to himself:

The constant stress of confinement causes unusual behavior that likely wouldn’t happen to orcas in the wild, like vomiting. 😦

Aren’t you tired of seeing SeaWorld get away with using and abusing orcas and other marine animals for “entertainment”?

You can help put an end to SeaWorld’s cruelty right now by completing the missions below:

Man Purposely Runs Over And Kills His Chihuahua

SAMPLE LETTER

To Whom It Concerns,

I read about the shocking video: Man Purposely Runs Over And Kills His Chihuahua; the Los Angeles Daily News has just released a sickening video, recorded on December 28, in which a Hawthorne, California, man is seen purposely running over his own Chihuahua, then driving away while the tiny dog is left dying in the alley.

After seeing the video a few days ago, police arrested 45-year-old Michael David Parker, but he was quickly released after he posted the $20,000 bail.

Parker didn’t deny that he is seen on the gut-wrenching video, but claims it was accident. Hawthrone police Lt. Scott Swain disagreed, saying, “You can see him swerving toward the dog. (…) He’s a little poor defenseless dog and the guy just runs right over him and leaves; he doesn’t offer any help.” The body of Cow Cow, the poor five-and-a-half-year-old, male Chihuahua was found by a resident several days after the pooch’s death; said resident had a video surveillance camera pointed at the alley and made a police report after reviewing the tape.

“Parker is scheduled for arraignment March 25 at the Airport courthouse in Del Aire,” writes the Los Angeles Daily News. The video of the unbelievably cruel incident can be found here, but viewer discretion is highly advised before watching it: http://link.brightcove.com/services/player/bcpid2667424866001?bckey=AQ%7E%7E%2CAAAAAGBdRAo%7E%2Ct2cIYZUexJ3A8cUN5hVrvOvlDw9-tIaq&bctid=3019034479001 Source: Examiner/ Victoria Somorjal/

12 Heartwarming Photos that Prove Farm Animals Love Us

January 26, 2014
by

Awesome post and pictures courtesy of Life or Lunch

Many of us never have the privilege of getting to know a farm animal. Instead, we know them by their parts. A cow is a rib steak, a brisket, a package of ground beef. A pig is a strip of bacon, schnitzel, a loin chop. A chicken is a wing, drumstick, or a thigh.

While this categorizing may make it easier for some to pick out what they’d like from the grocery store, it’s also a way of distancing ourselves from who these individuals once were.

Thinking of a farm animal as an individual is certainly not something many feel comfortable with, but just like the domestic animals we share our households with, farm animals also have their own distinct personalities, likes, dislikes, and desires. What’s more, if we’d give them a chance, they’d show us just as much love as our beloved dogs and cats.

To prove this to you, take a look at the 12 photos below. Each embodies two key elements: (1) that farm animals can show us endless amounts of love, and (2) that we have everything in our power to return the same love and affection to them, too. Now, isn’t that wonderful?

 1. “I always love snuggle time with my human. Wouldn’t you?”

You are what you EAT! 5 Surprising things humans feed cows

January 24, 2014
by

By

In addition to the old standbys of corn, soy, hay (and, uh, drugs), “there’s a lot of stuff which the general public might not think of as feeds which are actually quite common,” says Cory Parsons, a livestock nutrition expert at Oregon State University. For example:

Sawdust: Decades ago, when Bob Batey, an eastern Iowa entrepreneur, observed cows gobbling up sawdust hosed down from his paper mill, he had an idea: Why not make the stuff into a commercial cattle feed? Sawdust is made largely of cellulose, a carbohydrate, but it’s bound together with a compound called lignin, which makes it hard to digest. To strip the lignin, Batey soaked some of the stuff in nitric acid, and voilà! The cows were ready to chow down. “They like it,” he says. “It’s good for them. It’s economical. And it’s green.”

But it was only after a 2012 drought laid waste to local hay and grass that Batey put his idea into action. He teamed up with local feed producers to devise a mix of sawdust, corn, vitamins, and minerals. While ranchers have not yet widely adopted the sawdust feed, Byron Leu, a regional beef specialist at Iowa State University, said with corn prices high, the stuff could catch on “pretty fast.” The Iowa City Gazette noted that in tests, the cows ate the stuff “like candy.” Speaking of which…

Candy, wrapper and all: Ranchers report feeding their beef steers and dairy cows a variety of bulk candy, including gummy worms, marshmallowshard candysprinkles, chocolatecandy corn, and hot chocolate mix. Candy provides sugar that cows would usually get from corn, giving them more energy and making them fatter. When corn prices skyrocketed, the practice became popular: In fall 2012, one candy supplier who sells farmers and ranchers “salvage” chocolate—that’s imperfect and broken chocolates—said the price of the stuff had recently doubled.

In some cases, ranchers found, the candy feed comes wrapped. Asked if he was concerned about his cattle eating plastic, one animal nutrition expert in Tennessee said he was not worried. “I think it would pass through just like excess fiber would.”

Chicken shit: What’s not to love about the fecal waste of America’s 36-million-plus broiler chickens? It’s plentiful and cheap. But according to a recent OnEarth story by Brad Jacobson, the problem may be less the poop itself than the smorgasbord of other substances it frequently comes with, including feathers, heavy metals, bacteria, antibiotics, and bits of rodents. Jacobson also notes that the practice could promote the spread of mad cow disease.

Ground limestone: Strange as feeding rocks to cows may sound, limestone can be found in cattle troughs all over the United States. The stuff is a cheap source of calcium, and it also seems to promote growth. As one study put it, cows that ate limestone late in life “tended to have more desirable carcasses” than cows that didn’t.

Crab guts: For ranchers and feedlots near the coast, the guts and other undesirable parts of fish, crabs, shrimp, and crawfish can be an abundant source of cheap protein. Ground up into a tasty meal, seafood byproducts can be mixed into other feeds. Fish-meal cattle feed isn’t a new idea; Marco Polo observed in his diary that cows ate it “without any sign of dislike.”

Vegan supermarket to open in London: VEGANZ

January 23, 2014
by

Source The All Animal Vegan

Dear Vegans… try to imagine a grocery shopping trip where you don’t have to tiresomely check the ingredients of every item you pick up.

You know the drill – you look for the Vegan symbol, most of the time it’s not there, so then you check the entire list of ingredients. Even after this you feel unsure if it is definitely vegan — have they listed all the ingredients? Have they made a mistake? If it is vegan-friendly, why don’t they label it? Hmm, is it safe to buy this?

So imagine a supermarket where you could safely buy every item, where EVERYTHING is vegan. ‘Don’t be so ridiculous; there couldn’t possibly be such a place’ you say. I wouldn’t joke about something so wonderful…

I am ecstatic to discover that as of 2014 things are changing for us London vegans. A LARGE FULLY FLEDGED VEGAN SUPERMARKET WILL OPEN IN LONDON! My husband (who is a writer) tells me that capital letters represent shouting – good, I’d like to shout about this as loud as I can, both inside computer land and out in the real world.

There are other supermarkets in the UK that provide a plethora of vegan products – not just health food shops like Holland & Barratt, Wholefoods and Planet Organic, but also the mainstream chains like Tesco and Sainsbury’s. Although with time some of these supermarkets are providing an impressive variety of vegan goods, these are mixed in with non-vegan items and in my experience not always labelled 100% correctly, causing some nervousness in my purchases.

So, instead of shouting with joy in the street, I contained myself long enough to give Veganz (the German company behind the new supermarkets) a call to find out more. Due to my overexcitement and persistence, I was lucky enough to get an interview with the marketing manager Ivonne Meyer and the founder Jan Bredack.

It came as no surprise to me to learn that Veganz is a labour of love, but also brings a fiercely ambitious and entrepreneurial spirit. Founder Jan was a lifelong employee of luxury car manufacturer Daimler, rising to technical director and running the company’s Russian manufacturing facility. Around the same time, he met the love of his life and she just happened to be a vegetarian. She spurred him to ‘question the cruelty surrounding eating meat and fish’ so the couple soon began to live vegan. They saw how difficult it was to buy vegan items so Jan took a risk on a new venture — he invested his money to build the first vegan supermarket in Berlin.  And so Veganz was born in 2011. Today, Veganz has four stores, and big plans to expand across Europe.

Sea Shepherd Locates Whale Poachers: Confirms Whales Have Been Killed Inside Whale Sanctuary

January 22, 2014
by

Source Sea Shepherd

The Sea Shepherd Fleet has located all five vessels of the Japanese whale poaching fleet, including the Japanese factory ship, the Nisshin Maru, inside the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary.

The Steve Irwin, The Bob Barker and The Sam Simon are now in pursuit of the whaling fleet, driving them away from their intended poaching grounds, disrupting their illegal hunt, and preparing to shut down their whale-killing operations.

The Steve Irwin’s helicopter first located the Nisshin Maru at 64°44′ S, 162°34′ W, in New Zealand’s sovereign waters in the Ross Dependency Antarctic region, and inside the internationally recognised Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary.

Sea Shepherd has obtained compelling footage and images of three dead protected Minke Whales on the deck of the Nisshin Maru, taken at the time the factory ship was first located. A fourth whale, believed to be a Minke, was being butchered on the bloodstained deck.

Sea Shepherd Australia Managing Director, Jeff Hansen, stated, “The Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary has been tainted by the illegal slaughter of these beautiful and majestic Minke Whales by the ruthless, violent and barbaric actions of the Japanese whale poachers. No one will ever know the pain and suffering these playful, gentle giants went through from the time the explosive harpoon ripped through their bodies to the time they drew their last breath in a red sea full of their own blood. One thing is for sure, Sea Shepherd will do what ever it takes to ensure no more whales have to endure pain and suffering at the hands of these whale butchers from Japan.”

Captain of The Steve Irwin, Sid Chakravarty, said, “When ‘science’ requires you to grotesquely bloat up the bodies of protected whales, stroll across a deck smeared with their blood, hauling their body parts with hooks and chains, and discarding their remains over the side, then that ‘science’ has no place in the 21st Century. The Nisshin Maru is an out-and-out butcher ship and a floating butchery has no place in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary. Sea Shepherd will remain relentless in driving these fake, desperate and subverting ‘scientists’ back to Tokyo.”

The Japanese whale poaching fleet operates in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary in contravention of the 1986 global moratorium on commercial whaling under the guise of scientific research. In June 2013, the government of New Zealand joined the Australian government’s challenge to the legality of Japan’s whale hunt in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary at the International Court of Justice. A judgement on the case is yet to be delivered.

Captain of The Bob Barker, Peter Hammarstedt, said, “Once again, the Japanese government has shown flagrant disregard for international law by continuing their illegal whale hunt while the world patiently awaits a decision from the International Court of Justice. The Japanese government’s dishonourable attempt the skirt the legal process is an insult to the cooperation demonstrated by people around the world, dedicated to enacting conservation laws out of a shared recognition for the need for environmental protection.”

Managed and led by Sea Shepherd Australia, Operation Relentless is Sea Shepherd’s tenth Antarctic Whale Defence Campaign. In its previous nine campaigns, Sea Shepherd saved the lives of over 4,500 whales.

Sea Shepherd Australia remains the only organisation committed to defend the integrity of the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary by directly intervening against the illegal operations of the Japanese whaling fleet.

Tell EU Member States: Save Greek “undesirables” from internment camps!

Background  WatchDog.net

First migrants and recent immigrants were rounded up from Greece’s streets and forced into internment camps. Then they threw the drug users in. Next came the sex workers, forcibly HIV tested, publicly humiliated, and imprisoned.

Now they’re coming for transgender men and womenand the list of “undesirables” just keeps longer.

Operation Zeus is a cleansing campaign targeting and imprisoning the most vulnerable members of Greek society, accompanied by spikes in racism, gender hate and homophobia.

There are now at least 5,000 people languishing in these hellholes simply for existing — and this month, while warning trans* men and women to “return to normal” or else, the Greek government announced that camp capacity is about to double.

We call on the EU member states to put the pressure on Greece now to stop this abhorrent cleansing campaign now. We can still save the people persecuted under Operation Zeus — but we can’t afford to stay silent for long!

PETITION TO EU MEMBER STATES: We cannot afford to sit by while another European country rounds up “undesirables” and imprisons people in camps simply for existing. Let the Greek government know it must release these people now.

I Have a Dream

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.

I have a dream …

My dream is that one day, humans will open their eyes to see that animals are no different than we are and that in their last moments of life, we are the same. We all look at death with fear, we all desire freedom, and we all deserve to live.

Will You Help To Stop Another Donkey Basketball School Fund Raiser Event?

January 19, 2014
by

BACKGROUND

On February 19th, 2014 another Donkey Basketball school fund-raiser event begins.  Will you help to stop this one as we have all the others?

Just takes a few minutes to send an e-mail to the local newspaper and the event coordinator at brunswick2014afterprom@gmail.com. News article explaining when this event starts in Feb 19, 2014. Select Newspaper article to read all about this event.

The event, which will take place at 7 p.m. Feb, 19,  2014, will feature 32 live donkeys – yes, you read that right. Donkeys. Four teams of eight players each will then ride the donkeys in an effort to score baskets, similar to traditional basketball.  – Copied from the news paper article above.

We need to STOP DONKEY BASKETBALL! This fund-raising event is coming to a school of children on Feb 19, 2014. Donkey Basketball is inhumane. How the teachers can think this is good for students to learn to abuse a introverted scared animal is beyond my comprehension with all the violence going on in schools today.

FACT

Donkeys are mostly introverts and do not like loud noises! Donkeys have weight limits to be ridden, no more than 20% of their body weight including the tac. Donkeys lay down when scared and overwhelmed as they are into self-preservation. Donkeys pull back when scared. Donkeys buck when scared or too much weight is on them or worse on their butt and not the right position. Melody Johnson, Donkey Whisperer Farm

SAMPLE COMMENT

To Whom It Concerns,

It is my understanding that a local school, Brunswick High School, is planning to participate in “donkey baseball” as a fundraising event. While fundraising can certainly be an admirable endeavor, I am shocked at the disrespect and cruelty inflicted on donkeys in pursuit of such. Donkey baseball is inherently cruel, subjecting donkeys to unnatural environments and pain in exploitative situations; examples include being shoved, yelled at, whipped, and forced to travel for months at a time with little mobility or fresh air. Forcing donkeys to endure this is completely unjustified, and the Animal Welfare Act affords no protections to them.

Indeed, “donkey basketball” games are barbaric events during which docile animals are used again and again: the donkeys are lugged from place to place for months on end in small, poorly ventilated vehicles, with no consideration for their welfare, safety, or happiness. Equines who are systemically subjected to such stressors can develop unpredictable temperaments, putting riders and bystanders at risk. There has been a record of injuries, including a case in which an injured participant successfully sued a school for more than $110,000 in damages.

Animals are sentient creatures, capable of love, pain, thought, and suffering, and when you support the exploitation of these donkeys, you only promote indifference and establish that you are unsympathetic to animal concerns. Furthermore, when you actively engage in this type of abuse in front of children, you are indeed promoting animal abuse and disrespect, which invariably lead to human abuse and disrespect. Please discontinue plans for this activity and use an alternative fundraising event in which all can participate in a cruelty-free manner.

Thank you for your attention and consideration to this urgent appeal.

A recent win in the fight against animal cruelty, from Senator Patrick Leahy

January 18, 2014

Knowing your interest in eliminating equine cruelty and abuse, I wanted to share with you a recent advance in Congress in this fight.

On January 16, the Senate passed a sweeping spending bill to fund the government through September, eliminating the threat of another government shutdown. I am pleased to inform you that this omnibus spending bill includes a provision I supported that blocks the United States Department of Agriculture from inspecting horse slaughter plants. This House and Senate approved provision will reinstate the ban on federal funding for facilities engaged in the sale or slaughter of horses for human consumption.

In these difficult fiscal times, it is crucial we do not waste limited taxpayer resources on programs that extend and promote animal cruelty. Please know I will continue to support the humane treatment of all animals and I look forward to the passage and enactment of this important animal welfare provision.

Thank you for your interest and engagement in this issue.

Sincerely,

PATRICK LEAHY
United States Senator
