HighestWelfare.Humane.Assured.GoodPractices.Vegetarian. Regenerative.Flexitarian.Lies...
What is the difference between No Welfare, High Welfare, and Highest Welfare when they all require animals to die? Only human comfort, NONE protect the actual animals. The most humane, ethical, and honest Webster-defined "welfare" is NOT exploiting animals - not using, not wearing, not eating, not killing - animals. The only meaningful position is vegan, everything else is just how humans euphemize animals' required suffering and violent deaths: no human exploits animals because they honestly believe that NOT exploiting animals is UNethical or INhumane.
Canadian Hospitals End Fatal Use of Rabbits and Pigs: One Action

From PCRM | Ryan Merkley
Together, we continue to save lives and stop cruel training practices! We recently learned that PCRM was successful in ending the use of rabbits and pigs in trauma training courses at two Canadian medical facilities.
In a pediatric trauma training course in Hamilton, Ontario, trainees made an incision between live rabbits’ ribs and inserted a plastic tube into the animals’ chest cavities. In another course at Hamilton Health Sciences, up to 91 pigs per year were used in a course in which needles were inserted into the animals’ chest cavities and the sacs around their hearts. Pigs were also used in a trauma training course at Saint John Hospital in New Brunswick. Both hospitals now teach these crucial lifesaving procedures with medical simulators modeled on the human body.
PCRM urged course directors and administrators at both medical centers to adopt nonanimal training methods. We also filed a federal complaint against Hamilton Health Sciences with the Canadian Council on Animal Care before the hospital confirmed that it had replaced animal use.
These victories are part of PCRM’s highly successful United States- and Canada-wide effort to replace the use of animals in Advanced Trauma Life Support courses. With your help we have saved thousands of animals from being used in these courses and advanced medical training at dozens of facilities across North America.
Please contact Baystate Medical Center president and CEO Mark Tolosky and Chief of Trauma and Emergency Surgical Services Ronald Gross, M.D. Ask Mr. Tolosky and Dr. Gross to replace the use of pigs in all ATLS courses with the validated nonanimal training method that Baystate already owns. Please remember, being polite is the most effective way to help these animals and improve medical education.
We have provided you with some text but if you choose to write your own here are some talking points:
- I am writing to urge you to end the use of animals in Baystate’s Advanced Trauma Life Support program.
- The vast majority of ATLS programs in the United States and Canada exclusively use nonanimal methods like the TraumaMan System.
- Baystate owns the TraumaMan System and could immediately replace the use of pigs.

Please immediately replace the use of live animals in Baystate’s Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) program with an American College of Surgeons-approved alternative such as the TraumaMan System. Baystate’s state-of-the-art medical simulation center, which currently owns TraumaMan, affords you the opportunity to seamlessly transition to nonanimal training methods.
China bans animal circuses …

From The Telegraph
By Malcolm Moore, Shanghai
China has banned animal circuses and warned its zoos they must stop abusing animals or face closure.
Live animal shows and circuses are hugely popular in China, and draw around 150 million visitors a year at 700 zoos. However, animal rights campaigners have repeatedly complained that the shows should be stopped.
“A zoo in my city had a show where they forced an adult lion to stand on the back of a horse for a sort of animal acrobatic performance,” said Xiao Bing, the chairman of the local animal protection association in the southern city of Xiamen.
“I also saw one entertainment park where the monkeys seemed to have wounds all over their bodies. The manager told me the monkeys got hurt during live monkey-fighting shows,” he said.
Other cases of abuse include beating lions to make them jump through rings of fire and forcing bears to walk across tightropes, said Hua Ning, at the International Fund for Animal Welfare.
Chinese circuses have defended their shows, saying that the animals are well fed and that teaching them tricks can help them become “stars”.
However, the Chinese government has now issued a total ban, which came into force on Tuesday across the 300 state-owned zoos which are part of the China Zoo Association.
“We are hopeful it will have an effect,” said David Neale, the Animal Welfare Director at Animals Asia. “I visited Chongqing zoo before Christmas and their circus was clearing out, and Kunming zoo has also said its circus has been closed.”

Other zoos, however, said they had received no notice of the new rules. “We will help police the ban and report any cases we find to the government,” vowed Mr Neale.
The ban will also force zoos to stop selling animal parts in their shops and zoo restaurants will have to stop serving dishes made out of rare animals, another widespread practice.
Similarly, zoos will no longer be able to pull the teeth of baby tigers so that tourists can hold them and will have to stop attractions where live chickens, goats, cows and even horses are sold to visitors who can then watch them be torn apart by big cats.
A spokesman for China’s State Forestry Bureau said a three-month investigation last year had uncovered more than 50 zoos where animals were suffering severely because of abuse.
However, the closure of the shows could push some zoos towards bankruptcy and may leave many animals with an uncertain future. “In some cases, I am not sure where the animals will go,” said Mr Neale.
“In some cases I would recommend euthanasia, since there are animals in a very bad way after a few years of being in these performances.”

In 2009, Bolivia set a shining example to the world in banning the use of animals in circuses.
The past month has seen the ban being decisively enforced, and Animal Defenders International has been able to rescue an incredible 24 lions from circuses across Bolivia, and make plans to bring them to a new home in a sanctuary in the U.S. to live out their lives in freedom.
Following what the ADI team calls ‘Operation Lion Ark’, in which all 24 lions will be airlifted to their new home, the group will carry out its pledge to continue supporting the lions’ care for the duration of their lives.
But in the U.S., animals still languish in traveling circuses.
An ADI investigation of the U.S. circus industry has exposed confinement, deprivation, lax safety standards and cases of severe violence to animals.
The findings of the investigation included sickening violence inflicted on two female elephants, Krissy and Queenie (Boo), who were electric shocked during training sessions and when being moved to the ring to perform. Krissy was beaten, dragged to the ground and kicked in the face.
Given the circumstances of constant travel, limited facilities and pressure to make animals do things that they are unwilling to do, suffering and sometimes abuse is inevitable in U.S. traveling circuses.
No one is saying end circuses. Rather, let’s take animals out of circuses and let humans do the entertaining.

Greetings,
We, the undersigned, would like to congratulate the Bolivian government on implementing Law 4040 banning the use of animals in traveling circuses. Thanks to this, Animal Defenders International have been able to rescue 24 lions from circuses across Bolivia, and make plans to bring them to a new home in a sanctuary in the U.S., to live out their lives in freedom.
We would therefore urge the U.S. Congress to support measures to protect animals used in traveling circuses in the U.S.

Given the circumstances of constant travel, limited facilities and pressure to make animals do things that they are unwilling to do, suffering and sometimes abuse is inevitable in U.S. traveling circuses. The scientific evidence is clear; if an animal has no control over its environment and cannot exercise its body and mind this can result in repetitive, abnormal behaviors, indicating that the animal’s welfare has been compromised and it is suffering.
No one is saying end circuses. Rather, let’s take animals out of circuses and let humans do the entertaining.

Started by: Barbara Napoles
I was recently informed by Hope4Dolphins that The Mirage, owned by MGM Grand International, is home to an exhibit called “Siegfried and Roy’s Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat.” She told me of the research she did, that this place was actually called the “Dolphin Death Pool.” I decided to do a little research on this exhibit and came to learn who were the principals of this corporation.
A visitor states the following:
Upon entering the facility, for which you pay $15, you are given a brochure which talks about conservation and gives you wild dolphin facts. However, advertisements on TV and magazines push their “be a trainer for a day” programs more.
I found out that the trainer for a day program cost are as follows: Trainer for a day is $495, trainer with one observer is $645, and trainer with 2 observers is $795.00
The dolphins perform tricks and flips for the paying customers and are given fish as reward. These are not natural behaviors for dolphins; they are trained and taught behaviors.
This exhibit has been the death sentence for many wild and captive-born dolphins. The Review-Journal obtained records from the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration that includes an inventory of the dolphins at The Mirage and cause of death for those that died.
The bottlenose dolphins are subjected to extreme temperature changes — from extreme cold (snow flurries) to extreme arid, dry conditions — and pollution from a nearby highway. The pool is located in the heart of Las Vegas and specifically next to a busy highway. If you lived next to constant gas fumes from thousands of automobiles, you’d develop respiratory problems too!
The Born Free foundation and the WSPA have condemned this place for its claims of being a research and educational facility, while in reality it is motivated by profits.
The dolphins are not protected from snow, or dropping temperatures or very hot temperatures. Dolphins breathe air like we do. Even if the water is heated, the dolphins are still subject to the same respiratory problems as we are!
We think that if enough people just stop visiting and voice an opinion, they will eventually remove this attraction as well. Dolphins belong in the ocean, not in captivity!
Here is a brief history of the dolphins (who) died there:
Rascal – age 4 – Death unknown
Pablo – age 10 – Died from rare fungus in its lungs
Darla – age 18 – Died from chronic pancreatitis
Squirt – age 15 – Died from respiratory ailment
Picabo – age 18 – Died suddenly from internal tear in its stomach
Bugsy – age 3 – Died from pulmonary abscess
No name – Stillborn
No name – 2 week old calf – died from pulmonary edema
Sigma – age 32 – Died from heart failure
Banjo – age 32 – Died from heart failure
Merlin – age 40 (estimate) – died from pneumonia
Sage – age 11 – death unknown
St. Pepper – age 2 – lung infection

Los Angeles Bans New Fast Food Restaurants

Please click on and sign Tell Mayor Bing: No New Fast Food Joints in Detroit
From Change
By Danny Jensen
For decades Los Angeles has been associated with drive-thrus and freeways, but a ban on new fast food restaurants aims to put the brakes on rising cases of obesity in the car-centric city.
The Los Angeles City Council unanimously passed regulations that prohibit any stand-alone fast food establishments from opening in South Los Angeles, a region of the city that has significantly higher rates of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease compared to wealthier neighborhoods.. The ban takes a courageous step towards fighting obesity and promoting healthier eating, and the victory stands as a commendable example for similar public health campaigns.
Far from an overnight success, the new regulations are an extension of a moratorium on new fast food spots put in place by the City Council in 2008. Championed by city councilwoman Jan Perry in 2007, the effort to limit fast food restaurants greatly benefited from the support of the South Central-based non-profit, Community Coalition, which works to provide preventative, community-centered solutions to crime, poverty, and public health concerns. Both Perry and the Coalition observed a strong connection between the sheer volume of fast food restaurants in South L.A. – a region that includes the communities of Watts, Crenshaw, Baldwin Hills, Gramercy Park, Exposition Park, and Jefferson Park – and the disproportionate rates of obesity.

Vodpod videos no longer available.
It’s estimated that fast food outlets account for roughly 45 percent of restaurants (somewhere around 1,000) in South L.A., while in more affluent West L.A., the number drops to 16 percent. In neighborhoods dominated by greasy fare on virtually every corner and lacking in healthy food alternatives, it might not come as a surprise that 30 percent of South L.A.’s 750,000 residents are obese, twice the rate of more prosperous parts of the city, according to the Department of Health. Limiting the growth of new fast food outlets will hopefully allow for an influx of grocery stores and healthier sit-down restaurants in areas where they are greatly needed.
Critical to the success of South L.A.’s fast food ban has been the concerted efforts of members of the L.A. City Council and the Community Coalition, both of whom responded to the outcry of residents frustrated by the lack of healthy options. Additionally, the City Council of Baldwin, considered the birthplace of the drive-thru and included in the new fast food regulations, recently passed a similar ban to cut pollution and fight obesity.

Sponsored by: The Official Facebook Group, Justice for Mima
Urgent: Please sign, forward | Court Date 1/31/11
It was recently announced that Violeta Dobreva (who fostered Mima for only 2 weeks) has been given the green light by a court in Bulgaria to hear her suit against the German-Bulgarian Street Animal Emergency Help NGO for custody of Mima, and have her be returned to Bulgaria after Mima has been living in Germany with her new family for the past 9 months.
We, animal advocates and the officers and members of the Facebook group, “Justice for Mima” with over 35,000 members from around the world including Bulgaria ask for Mima to be left alone. We have closely followed Mima’s case from the beginning, since March, 2010 when Mima was found tortured in a village in Bulgaria. All of Mima’s 4 legs were brutally chopped off over an old conflict between neighbors. Hers is one of the most heinous acts of cruelty we have come across. It brought thousands of us together to help Mima and bring change in a country where animal cruelty is still not a crime. After all she has been through, she deserves all the love and happiness life has to offer and in our opinion that is with her family in Germany where she has flourished these past 9 months.
Despite her physical and psychological handicap, Mima has been living happily in a private mansion in Germany with her new brothers and sisters (6 handicap dogs and cats from Bulgaria). She has learned to trust humans again with the love and dedication of her adoptive parent, Mrs. Eva Linkogel, a lifelong animal activist and rescuer who has been caring for Mima 24/7. She has also developed a special bond with her best friend Daria, a disabled dog who is always by Mima’s side. For the first time in her life, Mima has learned to be loved and be part of a family. She cannot be placed in a more perfect home. To take this all away would be so cruel and truly devastating for Mima!
We believe Violeta Dobreva’s letter of April 21, 2010 to be forthright when she first relinquished Mima early in the case. Mrs. Dobreva should be a person of honor and keep her word instead of pursuing this fight for custody. Real love means selflessness– set Mima free and let her be happy.
We as a group have never officially taken a side on the custody battle until the news of the court case. Even after Mrs. Dobreva deceived us out of our $8,000USD group ChipIn donation meant for Mima, we still kept the custody separate so as not to hurt the cause. (Incidentally, we still demand that our $8,000USD group donation, be transferred to our 2 chosen NGOs to help the animals in Bulgaria as outlined by Nadia Donato in her many messages. Mrs. Dobreva has no right to keep our donations meant for Mima since she stopped paying for Mima’s bills since August 2010). In light of the recent news about the court hearing, we can no longer remain neutral on this issue. We cannot sit idly by and let another tragedy happen to Mima without a fight. This is not about Bulgaria vs. Germany, nor is it about the fight for animal rights. We strongly believe this is a fight for one’s own personal agenda. Our allegiance is to Mima, not to any country or person involved in this dispute. Mima has touched our hearts; her life means so much to so many of us.
We urge Mrs. Dobreva to drop the lawsuit, end this fight once and for all, and be happy for Mima that she has found the best loving home.
If Mrs. Dobreva still chooses to pursue custody, we are hopeful that the honorable judge will be fair and wise in his ruling and that the outcome will be on Mima’s best interest.

License hunting under “controlled conditions” or recreational massacre?
By Susanne Vävare
I think that there are a lot of shameful issues to raise in the case of Sweden’s licensed hunting on wolves and the media’s reporting, such as the following:
1st – EU processes would already have been started, unless the government has decided, at the last moment, to submit additional documents – documents that were also developed by the main hunting federation and chalet business. Suddenly, they had made themselves a party to the case where environmental groups appealed the government’s decision. Too bad we, the environmental conservationists, were not aware of this at the time.
In other words, without the intervention of the government, the licensed hunt could perhaps have been cancelled. Then the government would have had a hot potato on their hands, having had to deal with the hunters’ associations to whom they already had promised this hunt in exchange for their votes in the elections to Parliament. Apparently though, the government prefers to be negatively exposed to all of Europe, rather than facing the hunters’ associations.
2nd – Although the government has received serious warning signals from the European Commission, they chose to ignore this and to produce half-baked truths. Do not forget that the letter was also very timely lost – due to Carlgren because of this winter’s terrible weather conditions – and that it was not found until it was too late, i.e., December 17, the same day the Environmental Agency was to produce the decision about the hunt. Adding to this, Carlgren’s response to the EU Commissioner, Mr. Protocnik, was not official and known to anyone other than the Swedish Hunting Association until early January!
This was regarded so seriously by the EU Commission that they sent another letter and this time they went out with a press release to be certain that it would not be “lost” again in the Swedish winter weather conditions.
The warnings from the EU are very clear: Call off the licensed hunt until the EU has decided how to proceed.
And that’s what a wise and prudent government would have done. Unfortunately, the Swedish media did not choose to publish these matters at all. Why not? The media should have perhaps paid attention to the fact that many people notice everything that goes on, and that they are extremely frustrated. So frustrated that they are going out in the woods and fields to at least try to do something for our endangered species, the wolf.
Conclusion 1: Neither the government nor certain media are acting with responsibility. However, can you imagine the headlines when the EU launches possible infringement proceedings against Sweden? Then the tunes are going to be heard loud and quite differently. Then they will highlight the government’s poor conduct and behavior. Then, and only then, there will be shocking headlines!
Conclusion 2: A lot of people are in despair, and the hatred and antagonism is much more extensive than ever before.
Conclusion 3: An endangered animal is exposed to an amusement massacre, carried out by more than 8,000 hunters. Animals are seriously wounded, mutilated, and tormented, left to suffer unimaginable pain and fear. Families are being shattered. Young puppies are left alone again; indeed, a little pup was left alone after the entire pack was shot in Lövsjö territory, Dalarne. There are no controlled conditions, mere euphemistic promises, and we are seeing the tragedy unfold again.

Bloody Superstition
By Shawn Blore
1997-04-24 The Georgia Straight magazine, Vancouver, BC, Canada
Born in February 1944, in southern China, Ma Seeu-Sung (later Anglicized Anthony Marr by the Irish Jesuit that ran the secondary school he attended) fled to Hong Kong along with the rest of his family shortly after the Communist revolution. Family legend has Marr’s father burning the deeds of the family’s extensive land-holdings for a moment’s warmth during the first refugee winter…
(In 1965), Anthony Marr came to Canada to study science at the University of Manitoba… At the same time, his relationship with a Hong Kong girl fell to bits when she dropped him on orders from her parents. Marr has never forgiven Chinese culture for the snub. “As a result of that incident, I have never dated a Chinese girl again,” Marr said. It’s a decision that isolated him somewhat from the Chinese community, but, according to Marr, it also allowed him to integrate more fully into Canadian society than other Chinese immigrants of his generation.
In 1966, Marr switched over to the physics department of the University of British Columbia. His summers he spent in the bush in northern Manitoba and British Columbia, working as a geologist’s assistant. It was work that can only be idealized by someone who has never done it. Marr said, “The student is the geologist’s personal servant – more like slave, considering the pay, which was only $280 per month. I made and carried his lunch, and every few feet, the geologist would pick up a rock sample about twice the size of my fist and drop it into my knapsack. I had to carry that ever-heavier thing all day, wading into swamps that would sometimes come up to my chest or higher. Your shirt would be black with flies and mosquitoes. There could be a bear behind every tree. It was brutal, but also absolutely beautiful. And this was how I bonded with nature.”

After he graduated with a B.Sc. in 1970, Marr took a job as a live-in house-father for emotionally disturbed kids, then a career in real estate. He said he had a heavy student loan to pay off. One senses he also had a need to gain acceptance among the Vancouver business community. “I made rookie of the year, then Gold Club, Diamond Club, all that,” Marr said. “I bought a couple of horses – hunters-jumpers – and got involved with the high social elite you see down in Southlands.” Snap shots from the time show a short-haired Marr in boots and riding breeches, sitting atop a bay Thoroughbred gelding.
The real estate phased continued for several years. Marr bought a small acreage in the suburbs. He dated but never married. “The work first became routine, then boring, then irksome, then unbearable. I was still good at it, but the initial challenge was gone,” he said.
About this time, things took a strange turn. Whether from boredom, a need to be alone, or perhaps simple a desire to see the sights, he left his job and set off on a solo journey in East Africa, primarily in the Kilimanjaro, Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and Olduvai Gorge region of Tanzania. At some point during that three-month sojourn, something happened that changed the whole focus of Marr’s life. “If you want to be dramatic, you could say it came to me all at once in a blinding flash while I was camping on the savannah, but really, it developed very gradually.” What Marr was catching sight of was a completely new philosophical system, one that in Marr’s view is comprehensive enough to explain the organization and development of life, society and the Cosmos itself.
The full tenet of this system came to him in dribs and drabs over a period of many months during and after his return. Marr collected each of these thoughts on a file card – more than 1,000 of them by the end – and worked at ordering, arranging, and reordering them, trying to assemble his thoughts into a coherent whole. The process took years. Marr’s live-in girlfriend walked out. “I really shouldn’t be living with someone at that point,” Marr said. “I had to have my own room. I had to have a ‘DO NOT DISTURB’ sign on the door, and if anybody as much as knocked, my tenuous mental construct would fall down like a house of cards.” The net result of his shuffling and reshuffling, typing and retyping, was a manuscript more than 800 pages in length, describing a new and comprehensive philosophical and phenomenological system. Marr christened it OMNI-SCIENCE….
At first glance, OMNI-SCIENCE bears some resemblance to the ideas of the Jesuit philosopher-scientist Pierre Teilhard de Chardin. Both suggest that the development of humanity must logically proceed in a converging upward spiral, which Marr calls Integrative Transcendence, towards ever-superior levels of organization and unity. Marr, however, is quick to point out how his system differs from those of other western philosophers. “No philosophical or religious system I’ve encountered is cosmic enough,” said Marr. “They’re too anthropocentric, too narrowly focused.” Marr’s system purportedly incorporates everything – inorganic and organic – throughout the Universe, from the Big Bang to whatever end, all participating in the multi-levelled Integrative Transcendence spiral towards universal life and consciousness.
Hogwash? Possibly. Even Marr himself had doubts (about the acceptability of his system in the eyes of high academia). In the late 80s, Marr tossed both manuscript and portable type-writer into his little green Toyota Celica and set off down the West Coast to test his system with the best academic minds he could find. One of the stops was the University of California at Berkeley, and another was Stanford. “This was when my sales training paid off. When I got to town, the first thing I’d do was find a course catalog and look up the professors who were teaching the courses I liked. Back in my hotel room, I’d crank out a dozen or so letters. ‘Dear Prof. so and so, I have a matter of philosophical interest that I’d like to discuss with you. The time required would be about two hours…’ Then I’d go back to campus and put the letters into the professors’ cubbyholes. The next day, I’d call and ask for an appointment. We’d talk for two hours, and at the end, I’d ask for a letter of critique.”
The good professors’ reactions to this approach can be discerned from the letter written by William Kimbel, president of the Institute of Human Origins at Berkeley: “Owing to the large number of half-baked theories on cosmology currently in circulation, I admit that I faced the prospect of my meeting with Mr. Marr with some trepidation. From the outset, however, it was clear that Mr. Marr is no amateur populariser. On the contrary, he is a dedicated scholar whose theories, I believe, make a profound contribution to the fundamental definition of humankind in relation to the broader universe… implications of great depth and breadth for the future course of human actions… too important to ignore.”
Marr received similarly effusive letters from other professors at Berkeley, Stanford, and the Universities of Oregon, Washington and British Columbia…
Heady stuff. Yet, more than a decade later, the manuscript remains unpublished. Professor Braxton Alfred of Anthropology, UBC, said he even offered to help find a publisher, but Marr said his manuscript was not yet ready for publication. He did leave a copy of the then manuscript behind after his presentation, but due to professional pressures, Alfred didn’t get around to looking at it until recently. Reading it now, Alfred said, only increases his respect for Marr. It also sheds light on what it was that set him on his current crusade.
“The presentation he gave me was hard science, very thoroughly presented. He was right on the numbers with everything in the presentation. I presumed likewise in these documents,” Alfred said, referring to the OMNI-SCIENCE manuscript, “but these are quite a different thing. That man had a revelation in Africa. There’s no other way to characterize it. It’s clear that he was experiencing some sort of emotional trauma, and something touched him, and what these documents record are the revealed truth of that contact.”
According to the manuscript, Alfred said, Marr had reached a crisis and was sitting in the snows of Kilimanjaro, pointing a gun at his head.
Then, as stated in Marr’s text: “The sun went down, the moon came up, and more than my hand had begun trembling. It was then that this mysterious source of wisdom address me for the first time: ‘I am seeking a miracle worker, to work a miracle upon this Earth, on my behalf. Since you seem to have no further use of this body of yours, which seems to be in prime condition, will you surrender it to me?’”
“That’s when the entity, or whatever it is, first made contact with him,” Alfred said, “but, apparently, the contact continues. It seems that there is no end to it. I would not be surprised if he has conversations with this entity still.”
Having read the manuscript, Alfred said he is no longer puzzled by Marr’s decision to turn away from the task of perfecting his book to work on behalf of endangered species. “It was in Africa that this naturism force first came to the fore…” The manuscript also gives some indication of the source of Marr’s willingness to take on seemingly hopeless causes. “He clearly came to a crisis point in his life,” Alfred said, “and the heavens opened up and truth was revealed, and he’s been going strong eversince.”…
Heal Our Planet Earth Omni-Science and the Human Destiny
University of California, Berkeley | Biology, Professor Richard W. Holms:
“I have listened to a presentation by Anthony S. Marr. His synthesis of ideas from a remarkably broad perspective of sciences truly deserves the name OMNI-SCIENCE. His presentation was precise and clear, and I believe he would be an effective speaker for groups at varying levels of expertise…This is a person of great depth who speaks and writes both with confidence and ease. I am happy to recommend him as a speaker and a writer.”
Astronomy and Physics, Professor Marc Davis:
“As one who actually specializes in cosmology as a research endeavour, I was at first very skeptical that Mr. Marr would be yet another crackpot of the type that seems to congregate in this field. However, after only a few minutes of listening to his explanation of his viewpoint, my fears were allayed…His ultimate goal appears to be to provide a forward-looking moral framework for progress in human social evolution, one that is consistent with empirical science and which is not based on historical writings…and important contribution to society….”
Anthropology, Professor Tim White:
“I have not seen a draft of the book, but I can say that after spending a few hours with Mr. Marr, I am very much looking forward to reading it….Mr. Marr is an exceedingly unique individual. I have never crossed paths with such a person. He is very serious, very dedicated, and very polished in his presentation…The care with which he his proceeded is commendable…his synthesis is formidable….”
Paleontology, Professor Carole S. Hickman:
“(Mr. Marr’s work) deserves the attention of serious scholars…an extraordinary intellectual undertaking…a unique framework…both intellectually and aesthetically stimulating…a bold and eclectic piece of scholarship that is, above all, refreshingly honest….His clarity of expression is exceptional. His logical consistency is a delight. The aesthetic quality of the model, in particular his attention to symmetry, provides a dimension that is appealing but sadly lacking in much of Western thought and tradition. The optimism, concern and compassion for humanity that are expressed in the application of the model to human behavior likewise commands attention….”
Zoology, Professor Richard C. Strohman:
“His views and thinking are quite original…a thoroughly logical system…might indeed fill a large gap in the way we think about evolutionary connections between ourselves and our world. I sincerely encourage you to listen to Mr. Marr. And I have one suggestion. His presentation is quite detailed and covers very large areas. My thought is that he and his listeners would all do much better in a small seminar setting so that there would be a symmetry between his own very wide knowledge and the ability for him to obtain meaningful feedback.”
Botany, Professor Herbert G. Baker:
“…an extremely interesting experience…worthy of the attention of a wide variety of persons. If he writes as clearly and understandably as his oral communication, the book should be an important contribution towards understanding cosmology.”
Paleontology, Professor Donald E. Savage:
“Professors and scientists at the universities of British Columbia, Washington, Oregon and California, to date, have each spent two hours or more listening to the powerful presentation of Anthony Marr of his erudite synthesis of scientific, philosophic and sociologic theory: OMNI-SCIENCE, A New Theory of Cosmology. I can add nothing to the praise that has been heaped upon Mr. Marr and his ideas by these men, and I endorse their statements with reservation. Now is the time for Mr. Marr’s ideas to be published, for the scientific world and general public should become aware of his synthesis.”
Institute of Human Origins, Berkeley | Dr. William H. Kimbel, President:
“I have recently had the great pleasure of listening to Anthony Marr describe the results of his thinking on cosmology.
“Owing to the large number of half-baked ‘pop’ theories on cosmology currently in circulation, I admit that I faced the prospect of my meeting with Mr. Marr with some trepidation.
“From the outset, however, it was clear that Mr. Marr is no amateur popularizer. On the contrary, he is a dedicated scholar whose theories, I believe, make a profound contribution to the fundamental definition of humankind in relation to the broader universe.
“Although Mr. Marr has an uphill battle ahead of him, I firmly believe that his ideas deserve very serious consideration by a wide audience. Not only do they unify the fragmented Western scientific disciplines, but they have implications of great depth and breadth for the future course of human actions. In the current atmosphere of censorship and anti-intellectualism, Mr. Marr’s concept of OMNI-SCIENCE is too important to ignore.”

Stanford University | Sociology, Professor Alex Inkeles:
“Recently Mr. Anthony Marr persuaded me to give him an hour of my time, all I could spare in that cycle of my calendar, and at that it had to be at the end of a busy day. This obliged Mr. Marr, as he told me, to adopt a different style of presentation than the one he usually used, one much more compressed and involving a more top-down approach instead of his usual inductive procedure. Despite these handicaps, Mr. Marr managed to impress me not only with the quality of his presentation, but also the quality of his thinking. The range of his knowledge is broad, and for something so broad seems impressively authoritative. At the heart of his approach is a conception of all living and indeed nonliving matter as organized in systems, and this gave him a considerable edge with me since my own propensity is to think in system terms… exceptionally comprehensive….”
Philosophy, Professor John Dupre:
“A few days ago, I had a lengthy discussion with Mr. Anthony Marr about his philosophical ideas. I can certainly confirm the impressions gained by the various other scholars who have written on his behalf. Marr is a highly intelligent, thoughtful man who has evidently acquired a thorough knowledge of the impressively broad range of topics over which his ideas range. As we were talking, I asked him all the difficult questions that occurred to me as he was outlining his ideas. He was always very quick to get the point, and had intelligent and relevant responses. I was very impressed with his various intellectual accomplishments.
“Though his ideas are extremely intriguing and provocative, I must confess to having considerable skepticism about his project which he did not altogether dispel. However, I very much doubt whether anyone could dispel this skepticism, and certainly not in two hours. I am not convinced, that is to say, that a systematic view of the scope that Marr attempts is really an intelligible project. However, there is no doubt that such projects will be forthcoming, and such a system informed by Mr. Marr’s deep and thorough understanding of the current state of scientific theory will undoubtedly be incomparably more edifying than the vast majority of such attempts, whether religiously based, or grounded on superficial impressions of science. Indeed, I am open to being convinced that such a project will address a pressing social need: if people insist on adopting comprehensive cosmological systems, then I would certainly encourage them to try his. I certainly share his concern about the dangers of many contemporary religious, especially fundamentalist, cosmologies.
“One thing, then I would say without any qualification is that I would strongly encourage any publisher to accept his book. I have not read the manuscript, but assuming, as I have no reason to doubt, that Marr is as articulate, clear and cogent on paper as he is in person, his system would make fascinating reading, and would, I suspect, attract a large audience….”
Applied Physics and Astrophysics, Professor Vahe Petrosian:
“…elaborate…clearly well thought out and researched…I was fascinated by his novel ideas in this very ambitious task…a beautiful synthesis…what I heard was captivating and should be of interest not only to experts but to all thinking people of the world…will find a wide and interested audience….”
Anthropology, Professor John W. Rick:
“…very thought-provoking…an integrative scheme capable of making sense out of a wide variety of natural science knowledge, which at the same time reaches out to philosophy and epistemology…clearly deserves extensive discussion…a serious, well-founded vision, not the product of trivial or eccentric thought. My feeling is that he deserves attention and his ideas should be published. I would recommend that those who have the time listen and argue over his presentation. One should not underestimate the time this may take, however, since his model covers a broad expanse of knowledge. I would think that his presentation would be an ideal forum in an academic department where a group of faculty and graduate students could take time to thoroughly examine his proposition….”
Physics, Professor Leonard Susskind:
“…the cosmic significance of life and evolution. Although this is not exactly my ‘meat’, I thoroughly enjoyed the two hours…I found myself stimulated, educated…His ideas are worth listening to, even for those of us who are not of the same philosophical bent….”
Philosophy, Professor John Bogart:
“I spent 3.5 hours with Mr. Anthony Marr…held my attention for the entire period…has plainly synthesized a great deal of information in a number of distinct disciplines…organized it into an interesting and coherent whole…compelling…intended to have moral import…can be cast into a form of interest to moral philosophy…would be of interest to a wide audience….”
Geology, Professor W.R. Evitt:
“I agree wholeheartedly…about his sincerity, imagination, intellectualism and scholarship. This afternoon was for me a unique and stimulating experience. In a highly logical series of simple steps, he developed a comprehensive concept of the interrelations and interdependence of all things…an immensely logical construct…should be accessible and acceptable to persons with a wide range of cultural, social, scientific and philosophical sophistications…meticulously thought out, with great care, to making his thesis externally consistent with the facts of science as currently perceived, and internally consistent in the interrelationships among its arguments…majestic in scope but intrinsically simple, satisfying and optimistic…should have a very broad appeal…These are important ideas with great potential for lessening the conflicts in a troubled world….”
Elephant crushes trainer, fox shoots hunter
Trainer crushed by elephant at Tennessee zoo | From Yahoo News
Writing by Tim Ghianni, Editing by Mary Wisniewski and Greg McCune
Nashville, Tennessee (Reuters) – An 8,000-pound elephant at a Tennessee zoo backed a trainer into a wall and crushed her to death, and the zoo said on Saturday it had temporarily closed its elephant exhibit.
“It’s a difficult day, but our staff is very professional and they are carrying on with their duties today,” said Tina Rolen, assistant director of marketing at the Knoxville, Tennessee zoo. She said the review of Friday’s tragedy is continuing.
Stephanie James, 33, was fatally injured Friday while performing routine chores involving Edie, a 26-year-old, 8,000-8,500-pound elephant who is 8 and a half feet tall at the shoulder.
“At this point in time we don’t believe it to be a malicious act or an aggressive act on Edie’s part, but the review is ongoing to determine what happened in the barn,” Rolen said.
James, one of four full-time elephant trainers at the zoo, was pushed into the wall in a stall by the animal, said Rolen.
The trainer was taken to nearby University of Tennessee Medical Center, where she died Friday of internal injuries, Rolen said.
“Everyone at Knoxville Zoo is shocked and saddened at the loss of Stephanie,” said Jim Vlna, executive director of the zoo. “Our prayers are with her parents, Ron and Kris James, and the rest of her family.”
Rolen said Edie, one of three zoo elephants, will not be punished or disciplined in any way. “Our training program is based on positive reinforcement,” she said. The zoo was open on Saturday but the elephant display was closed.

Outfoxed! Prey shoots hunter | From MSNBC
MOSCOW — A wounded fox shot (his) would-be killer in Belarus by pulling the trigger on the hunter’s gun as the pair scuffled after the man tried to finish the animal off with the butt of the rifle, media said Thursday.
The unnamed hunter, who had approached the fox after wounding (him) from a distance, was in hospital with a leg wound, while the fox made (his) escape, media said, citing prosecutors from the Grodno region.
“The animal fiercely resisted and in the struggle accidentally pulled the trigger with (his) paw,” one prosecutor was quoted as saying.
Fox hunting is popular in the picturesque farming region of northwestern Belarus that borders Poland.

By Stephanie Feldstein
BACKGROUND
Last weekend, animal control in the rural Alaska community of Matanuska-Susitna Borough (a.k.a. Mat-Su), received a tip that 75 dogs had died at the remote cabin of a husky/malamute breeder. Animal control was already familiar with Frank Rich — in 2007, his kennel was cited for unsanitary conditions.
Authorities seized 157 emaciated huskies. There were no food or water bowls in sight. Many of the dogs had already eaten as much of the fresh snow as they could reach. One dog already had to be euthanized due to being in such poor condition. Another 22 dead dogs were found on the property.
Veterinarian Katrina Zwolinski told the Anchorage Daily News that the dogs were all in horrible condition. “All of the dogs have long hair, and you can still see the hip bones. Their spines. Their ribs.”
Rich had quit his job in October and said it was a struggle to keep the dogs fed. But he admitted that he had not asked for help. Instead, he continued to breed the dogs.
Trooper Shayne Calt told the Daily News, “Rich stated that he prioritizes the food by giving it to the puppies first, because he sells the puppies.”
Unfortunately, animal control is all too familiar with neglected dogs in the rural community of Mat-Su, though this is the largest case of animal cruelty that anyone can remember.
And it is animal cruelty. Unemployment is no excuse for letting dogs suffer and die. If you can’t afford to feed your animals, you ask for help, you don’t just stand by while they starve to death.
The Mat-Su Animal Shelter was already near capacity before the rescue, and the influx of malnourished dogs have the staff and volunteers scrambling for help. They’re worried about not only keeping the dogs comfortable, but shortages of supplies like medication and, as the court case drags on, running out of food.

But the community has stepped up. A special fund was created by Linda Henning, publisher of Alaska Dog News, and, by Wednesday, $6,000 had already been donated. Area businesses and organizations are helping collect donations of food and supplies.
Rich is facing 50 counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty. That’s already 129 charges too few — he should be held accountable for every dog found, dead or alive, on his property. But at the very least, he should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law for the 50 counts on the table. Ask the borough attorney to show that Mat-Su will not condone animal cruelty and neglect.

China animal rights groups protest seal meat deal

From AFP International News
BEIJING — More than 40 Chinese animal rights groups on Thursday hit out at Canada for turning China into a “dumping ground” for its seal meat and oils, after the products were banned in the European Union.
The agreement to allow the imports into China was reached during a visit to Beijing by Canadian Fisheries Minister Gail Shea, and follows an EU ban on seal product imports imposed after an activist outcry over commercial seal hunting.
“‘Do not give to others what you yourself do not want’ is an ancient Chinese proverb,” said Lu Di, head of the China Small Animal Protection Association.
“It is insulting for Canada to market these products in China,” she added in a statement emailed to AFP, also backed by 41 other animal protection groups around China.
The Canadian government maintains that the 350-year-old commercial seal hunt is crucial for some 6,000 North Atlantic fishermen who rely on it for up to 35 percent of their total annual income.
Animal rights groups however say it is barbaric, and have waged an aggressive campaign in recent years to stop the annual hunt.
“Yes, Chinese consumers have impressive purchasing power,” Qin Xiaona, director of Beijing’s Animal Welfare Association, said in the statement.

“Yet, I am sure Chinese consumers would reject without a moment’s hesitation seal products if they knew the cruelty behind them. With rising environmental awareness, many people have vowed to be ethically responsible consumers.”
China is the third largest importer of Canadian fish and seafood, behind the United States and European Union.
By authorising seal meat and oil imports, China joins Japan and South Korea as new markets for Canadian seal products.
The animal rights movement is gradually gaining ground in China — which for years has had a dismal record on animal welfare — amid increased public awareness, especially among the younger generation.
The nation’s first draft animal protection law is currently being discussed, but is not expected to come into force for several years.

In the Maha Sarakham province of Thailand, three elephants were butchered by a temple and their meat, skulls and tusks were sold for more than $85,000. There are seven other elephants remaining at the temple.
Sangduen Chailert, founder of the Love Elephants and the Environment foundation, said the elephants appear to be suffering from severe malnutrition and could die if they don’t receive treatment. Or they could be butchered — in Thailand, it’s legal to sell ivory from “domesticated” elephants. Chailert and other elephant advocates are calling on the government to save the remaining elephants.
When the butchering at the temple hit the news, there were concerns that it could affect tourism. Let the Thai government know that the international community is watching, and we are appalled by this situation.
Thailand needs to do more to protect their elephants, both wild and in captivity, and they can start by saving these seven neglected animals before it’s too late.
Message Text
I recently learned that three elephants were butchered by a temple in Maha Sarakham, and their meat, tusks and skulls were sold. Sangduen Chailert, founder of the Love Elephants and the Environment foundation, told the media that seven elephants still at the temple appear to be suffering from severe malnutrition and could die if they don’t receive treatment.
I urge you to save the remaining elephants. Please immediately remove them from the temple and send them to a sanctuary where they can be rehabilitated and live out their lives free from danger and exploitation.
The world often hears of Thailand’s mistreatment of captive elephants, and it has become an increasing problem with elephants being used to beg for money in the streets and now being butchered for their parts. This is cruel to the elephants in captivity and puts endangered wild elephants at risk.
This mistreatment of elephants keeps tourists away.
Please make protecting Thailand’s elephants a priority and start by rescuing the seven remaining elephants from the Maha Sarakham temple before it’s too late.
Thank you.

After an 11-year struggle, Thailand’s first animal welfare legislation, currently pending review and approval by the Decree Office, is in trouble! The Prevention of Cruelty to Animal and Animal Welfare Bill is currently in limbo, and officials need a nudge to get back on track.
The current term of the current Thai government coalition is going to end soon, and concerned Thai activists believe that if the review process of the bill is delayed further, Parliament may not have enough time to act on the bill before the session ends. If that happens, the whole lengthy process will have to be repeated when the next session convenes.

Dear Ambassador Kittiphong,
I am disappointed that the worst acts of violence against animals are allowed to happen in Thailand every day and that abusers are not punished for the consequences of their actions. However, I’m also reassured to hear that the first legislation on animal welfare is finally about to take root in Thailand. I have heard that the bill is being held up by the Cabinet Secretariat, which has been slow in submitting the bill to the parliament for consideration. Unnecessary and prolonged delay will result if the bill fails to reach the parliament before the end of the current session.
I hope you will use your influence to ensure that the bill is immediately submitted to the parliament for consideration. Many compassionate people won’t visit Thailand because of the sight of animals suffering everywhere. Please pass this bill and make Thailand a better place for animals.

The head of a sealers group in Newfoundland and Labrador hopes Canada’s deal to sell seal meat and oil to China will mean more work for seal hunters in Atlantic Canada.
Federal Fisheries Minister Gail Shea has announced in Beijing that the two countries would sign an agreement Thursday.
“I think this can only be a great day for the sealing industry in the province,” sealer Mark Small of Wild Cove, on the Baie Verte Peninsula, said Wednesday after Shea’s announcement.
Small is president of the Northeast Coast Sealers Co-operative.
Opponents of the seal hunt were quick to condemn Wednesday’s announcement, but Shea said she hopes the deal will be a big boost to Canadian seal hunters.

8 Ways Monsanto is Destroying Our Health

“The deeper you can manipulate living structures, the more you can control food and medicine.” Dr. Vandana Shiva
Lots of talk these days about the bullying of young boys and girls in school by more aggressive students. This brings to my mind the biggest bully of all: the biotech company, Monsanto Corporation. Taken in context, Monsanto’s list of corporate crimes should have been enough to pull their corporate charter years ago. And yet we allow them to continue to destroy our food supply, our health and the planet. Monsanto or Monsatan? Take a look at the company’s track record and decide for yourself.
Agent Orange: Monsanto was the major financial beneficiary of this herbicide used to defoliate the jungles of Vietnam and destroy the health of American troops and their offspring. It also allowed Monsanto and other chemical companies to appeal for and receive protection from veterans seeking damages for their exposure to Agent Orange and any future biotech creations.
Aspartame: as far back as 1994 the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services released a report listing 94 health issues caused by Aspartame. It has been shown to cause slow but serious damage to the human body and yet it is used extensively in many commercial products.
Saccharin: studies have shown that saccharin caused cancer in test rats and mice; and in six human studies, including one done by the National Cancer Institute, that consuming artificial sweeteners, such as saccharin and cyclamate, resulted in bladder cancer.
RELATED | Food, Inc.: Trailer

Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH): a genetically modified hormone injected into dairy cows to produce more milk, despite the fact that more milk was needed. The cows suffer excruciating pain due to swollen udders and mastitis. The pus from the infection enters the milk supply requiring more antibiotics to be given to the cows. BST milk may also cause breast cancer, colon cancer and prostate cancer in humans.
RoundUp: the worlds most commonly used herbicide and weed killer has been linked to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, in a study by eminent oncologists Dr. Lennart Hardell and Dr. Mikael Eriksson of Sweden. Used on genetically modified crops resistant to RoundUps active ingredient glyphosate, environmentalists and health professionals are concerned that far from reducing herbicide use, glyphosate resistant crops may result in increased residues in food to which consumers will be exposed.
Genetically Modified Crops (GMO): Monsanto created Frankenfoods by gene-splicing corn, cotton, soy, and canola with DNA from a foreign source. Consequently these crops are resistant to massive doses of the herbicide, RoundUp, but in turn herbicide-resistant Superweeds are taking over. After running into resistance in the west, Monsanto is pushing GMO crops in third world countries. According to physicist, ecologist and activist Dr. Vandana Shiva,“Syugenta and Monsanto are rushing ahead with the mapping and patenting of the rice genome. If they could, they would own rice and its genes, even though the 200,000 rice varieties that give us diverse traits have been bred and evolved by rice farmers of Asia collectively over millennia. Their claim to inventing rice is a violence against the integrity of biodiversity and life-forms; it is a violence against the knowledge of Third World farmers.”

Carlos Alvarez already has a cantankerous billionaire — and 95,000 equally irate voters — trying to get him canned. Now the Miami-Dade County mayor can’t even find peace through Farmville: His Facebook page is under attack by animal rights activists.
Even before 2004, when the Humane Society decreed the county shelter was in “appalling” condition, animal lovers have waged jihad on Miami-Dade Animal Services (MDAS) and a kill policy that whacks more than 20,000 animals a year.
In the last couple months, an unruly mob has found a home on the mayor’s official Facebook page, where they have clamored — in that grating and incessant way that only animal rights activists can — for a larger Animal Services budget, new facilities, and less or no euthanasia. They’ve branded the agency’s director, Dr. Sara Pizano, “Dr. Death.” A sample from a woman named Amy Roman Restucci, sans the ubiquitous all-caps: ” This is a disgrace! What is it going to take for you to respond [to] the questions asked here? We are so tired of all the lies!”

Alvarez has the personality of pickled gherkin, so we’ re not surprised that he — or an intern; a spokesperson confessed his communications department “assists” him with his Facebook page — didn’t handle the spammers with aplomb. First, many of the comments simply disappeared. Then, ten days before Christmas, Alvarez made the bizarre boast that pound dogs, though doomed to die by lethal injection, would at least go out looking like Mr. Rogers. Alvarez’s status update: “All shelter dogs and puppies have blankets and sweaters (except aggressive ones and those that have removed them on their own).”
