FDA, it is time for transparency on supplement labels, please sign petition
FYI, if you supplement, please make certain the products you are using indicate that they are vegan/not sourced from animals/plant based, but not all labeling is accurate, bovine means the capsules are derived from animals (gelatin), vitamin D is often sourced from sheep wool, etc., but you can verify via vegan organizations such as Certified Vegan or Vegan Society.
Also, for the morally outraged antivegans who scream that animals are an excellent source of, say B12 for example, do remember that the animals are supplemented as is their food, and that choosing between a supplement and violent suffering should not be a challenging decision. SL

We’re petitioning the FDA to include a section on the ‘Supplement Facts Label ’, which would clearly indicate if a product includes animal-derived ingredients.
Over 80% of Americans use dietary supplements.
These products, which represent a $54 billion US industry, are now mainstream in American society, yet there is very little transparency about the use of animal ingredients within them. Unlike with prescription and over-the-counter medications, the FDA (and the Federal Trade Commission) assumes a reactive rather than proactive role towards dietary supplements. Instead, supplement companies, manufacturers, and distributors are left to ensure that each ingredient in finished products meets the definition of a dietary ingredient.
But they are hiding the truth from the public.
More than half of supplements in the market use at least one animal-derived ingredient with the two most common animal ingredients being magnesium stearate and gelatin, usually from cows, sheep or pigs. The US supplement industry kills 24 billion animals every year according to a report produced by Terraseed. Fishes make up the vast majority of animals killed for Omega-3 supplements, with over 23 billion killed annually. It takes approximately 100 fishes just to make one 30-pill bottle of Omega-3s.
Environmental catastrophe.
The supplement industry also creates 1.8 billion plastic pill bottles every year in the US alone, with only 9% of recyclable plastic actually being recycled. 76% of supplement packaging is made of plastic, and 3% of all supplement plastic waste ends up in the ocean every year, damaging fragile marine ecosystems and the animals who inhabit them.
It is time for transparency on labels.
Under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA):
Manufacturers and distributors of dietary supplements and dietary ingredients are prohibited from marketing products that are misbranded or misleading.
However, the supplement industry has traditionally lacked transparency about ingredients and how they are sourced.
People deserve to know what is in their supplements, where ingredients are sourced from, the level of animal suffering that is involved, what the supplement practices are in relation to plastic, and the overall impact on the environment and the animals.
We (consumers) would make more ethical choices if we could, but supplement companies are hiding ingredients, not being transparent, and prioritizing profits over consumer awareness.
The FDA must act!
>The FDA has the authority to take action against any misleading dietary supplement product after it reaches the market.
>The FDA must include a section on the ‘Supplement Facts Label’, which would clearly indicate if a product includes animal-derived ingredients.
>Consumers around the country are conscious about animal suffering and environmental pollution – transparency in labeling is the only way people can shop confidently without compromising their values.
>Animal-free supplements create less pollution and more consumer demand. A small label is all the public needs to make informed decisions for themselves and their planet.
>If brands have nothing to hide, there should be no reason for them to oppose more transparent labels on their products – let’s change this now!
What you can do!
1. Sign this petition today demanding the FDA add a section on the ‘Supplement Facts Label’ indicating whether the product uses animal-derived ingredients!
2. Share with your friends, family, and on social media.
3. Vote with your wallets. Only buy from ethical companies that are already transparent and don’t use animal-derived ingredients.
4. Sign the Plant Based Treaty which calls for a shift to plant-based solutions to fight the climate crisis.
