Background | From PETA
PETA India has been bombarded with complaints from people who were horrified to learn from this news video (below) that a donkey was brutally killed in Churu on August 7, 2011. We have been informed by locals that this cruelty took place on the order of Govind Mhansariya, chair of Nagar Parishad, Churu district.
The video footage shows that the donkey was pushed and pulled to ground before being crushed to death by a bulldozer. The killing reportedly took place because some local residents thought the donkey might have rabies because the donkey had been examining a dead dog—even though this behavior is not a confirmatory symptom of rabies.
Besides being an act of gross cruelty, torturing an animal is an illegal and punishable offense under India’s Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. Further, a procedure for the destruction of ill and suffering animals is set out in the act, and a government veterinarian should have been called to provide a medical opinion on the matter and to euthanize the animal humanely if required.
PETA India has written a letter to Vikas S. Bhale, the district magistrate of Churu, demanding prompt action against the chair of Nagar Parishad. We have also offered to help the government implement a training and awareness program for relevant government officials, including veterinarians in the area, so that animals who are thought to have rabies can be handled humanely in the future.
Please help by adding your voice to the campaign and urging the district magistrate to take action against the accused officer immediately.

I was shocked to see this video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dp6L8pQBoks, which shows a donkey being pushed and pulled to ground before being crushed to death by a bulldozer in Churu district. Locals report that the killing took place on the orders of the chair of Nagar Parishad after some residents thought the donkey might have rabies because the donkey had been examining a dead dog–even though this behavior is not a confirmatory diagnosis for rabies.
PETA India has asked you to take prompt action against the accused officer, as killing a donkey in this manner is illegal and punishable under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. Further, a procedure for the destruction of ill and suffering animals is set out in the act, and a government veterinarian should have been called to provide a medical opinion on the matter and to euthanize the animal humanely if required.
I understand that PETA India has also offered to implement a training and awareness program for relevant government officials, including veterinarians in the area, so that animals who are thought to have rabies can be handled humanely in the future.
Please take action against the chair of Nagar Parishad, pledge to ensure that animals will not be illegally and cruelly killed in your district by government order again, and work with PETA India to train relevant officials.

Wow, what will humans think up next? I have a soft spot for donkeys, I must admit. But of course this action toward any sentient being is murderous, unacceptable, and oh so sad.
Thanks Karen, as always for your poem. It reminds me of my mentor in AR since I was about 5, Cleveland Amory who much later founded the Fund for Animals. He wrote a book called “Man Kind?”
I have worked my whole life for human rights in so many capacities and still do. But really, something is wrong with humans who do anything like this, or come up with fur for a beauty contest, or torture poor elephants for entertainment, or invent an idea like Snapperfest, etc.
Since I oppose all speciesism, I cannot decide and will not spend time wondering which one of the events is the most horrid. Instead I will try to free every one.
Thank you again Stacey for this marvelous site and your wonderful, informative posts.

No animal should suffer as this dear donkey did. It is beyond belief that an animal could be tortured in this manner, in public, and not one person came forward to stop it. Horrific mirror about who they are as people. I am still shaking, in disbelief and horror after watching this destruction of life in such a cruel manner. I now will place this horrible image with another image I have from India. I watched as they loaded a very much alive dog in the back of a garbage truck and crushed it. India is a terrible place for animals. I hope these animals are present to stand in judgement of them. I believe that they will be, and these people will burn for eternity in hell.

These poor innocent loving animals don’t deserve to be treated in such a cruel manner. It makes me so sad to watch that video. My heart went out to that poor innocent donkey. Donkeys are so sweet, intelligent, sensitive! It’s inhumane to abuse and kill them, we don’t deserve the luck to share the world with animals since we are only able to destroy!
@Karen: just perfect, thanks sis!
Action taken, I’m sharing. Thank you Stacey x

What a horror to watch as that heavy machine was pounding repeatedly the head and body of that poor, poor innocent donkey! Get that man in jail!!! What gives him the right to purposely destroy a life! Why didn’t the people watching do something??? I will never understand the barbarity of man to animals, the environment and to other human beings. It is a sad day when a species does not respect anything and anyone.
