License hunting under “controlled conditions” or recreational massacre?
By Susanne Vävare

I think that there are a lot of shameful issues to raise in the case of Sweden’s licensed hunting on wolves and the media’s reporting, such as the following:

1st – EU processes would already have been started, unless the government has decided, at the last moment, to submit additional documents – documents that were also developed by the main hunting federation and chalet business. Suddenly, they had made themselves a party to the case where environmental groups appealed the government’s decision. Too bad we, the environmental conservationists, were not aware of this at the time.

In other words, without the intervention of the government, the licensed hunt could perhaps have been cancelled. Then the government would have had a hot potato on their hands, having had to deal with the hunters’ associations to whom they already had promised this hunt in exchange for their votes in the elections to Parliament. Apparently though, the government prefers to be negatively exposed to all of Europe, rather than facing the hunters’ associations.

2nd – Although the government has received serious warning signals from the European Commission, they chose to ignore this and to produce half-baked truths. Do not forget that the letter was also very timely lost – due to Carlgren because of this winter’s terrible weather conditions – and that it was not found until it was too late, i.e., December 17, the same day the Environmental Agency was to produce the decision about the hunt. Adding to this, Carlgren’s response to the EU Commissioner, Mr. Protocnik, was not official and known to anyone other than the Swedish Hunting Association until early January!

This was regarded so seriously by the EU Commission that they sent another letter and this time they went out with a press release to be certain that it would not be “lost” again in the Swedish winter weather conditions.

The warnings from the EU are very clear: Call off the licensed hunt until the EU has decided how to proceed.

And that’s what a wise and prudent government would have done. Unfortunately, the Swedish media did not choose to publish these matters at all. Why not? The media should have perhaps paid attention to the fact that many people notice everything that goes on, and that they are extremely frustrated. So frustrated that they are going out in the woods and fields to at least try to do something for our endangered species, the wolf.

Conclusion 1: Neither the government nor certain media are acting with responsibility. However, can you imagine the headlines when the EU launches possible infringement proceedings against Sweden? Then the tunes are going to be heard loud and quite differently. Then they will highlight the government’s poor conduct and behavior. Then, and only then, there will be shocking headlines!

Conclusion 2: A lot of people are in despair, and the hatred and antagonism is much more extensive than ever before.

Conclusion 3: An endangered animal is exposed to an amusement massacre, carried out by more than 8,000 hunters. Animals are seriously wounded, mutilated, and tormented, left to suffer unimaginable pain and fear. Families are being shattered. Young puppies are left alone again; indeed, a little pup was left alone after the entire pack was shot in Lövsjö territory, Dalarne. There are no controlled conditions, mere euphemistic promises, and we are seeing the tragedy unfold again.

i am a wolf and before you came
i ran safe and free
now all that’s changed
…my land is gone
…my numbers stunted
by so many people
who too much hunted
down my packs
for trophy and sport
or because this was
their way to cavort
this was my land before you came
now things can never be the same

Scandinavia is known the world over as highly advanced in such areas as social welfare, design in furniture and artefacts, cinema and the like. But when it comes to animal welfare and animal rights, Scandinavia is as dark as its long and bitter winters, as backward, atavistic and cruel as most other under-developed countries in the world. The true test of civilisation is the manner in which one treats animals: which have their own beauty, dignity, nobility and innate intelligence.

To inflict pain, injury and unconscionable torture on these helpless and voiceless creatures is the basest and vilest cowardice, indeed the quintessence of evil. Man passes judgement upon himself by such brutal and unethical actions.
