Background:
Johnson & Johnson and its subsidiaries represent a vast corporation with billions in annual revenue. As one of the largest and most important companies in the US, Johnson & Johnson is uniquely situated to lead the way in cruelty-free production methods. Unfortunately, Johnson & Johnson refuses to ban its use of animal testing and asserts that it only tests on animals “when necessary.” When testing Sucralose, better known as the sugar substitute Splenda, Johnson & Johnson found it “necessary” to contract an organization to poison dogs, monkeys, rabbits, and rodents with its product. Over 12,000 animals were killed in the process, all so Johnson & Johnson could market a low-calorie sweetner. The Splenda horror is hardly an isolated incident. We therefore urge Johnson & Johnson to do away entirely with animal testing and become a leader in cruelty-free production.

Petition Text:
Greetings,
I am greatly distressed to learn that Johnson & Johnson still tests its products on animals, though it maintains that it only tests on animals when necessary. This practice is cruel and utterly inhumane. Moreover, it is unnecessary in an age where alternatives to such testing exist, such as cell cultures and computer simulations. As other companies have found ways to take animal testing out of their product manufacturing process, it is unconscionable that Johnson & Johnson continues. I strongly urge Johnson & Johnson and its subsidiaries to find alternative means for the testing of all its products.

Join the 21st century and stop this barbaric testing on animals! I stopped buying products from your company because of this very reason. I only buy products from companies that do not conduct animal testing, and believe me, there are plenty of them. And until your company goes cruelty free, I will never buy your products again.

I have avoided Johnson and Johnson products for years. When I see the Johnson heir to the throne on TV telling what a family oriented, compassionate family they are it makes me sick with anger. They need to show some pics of chemicals being thrown in animals eyes or a chemicalburn eating into the live flesh of an animal.
I have changed many peoples minds and intend to keep doing so till Johnson and Johnson quits this cruel, archaic practice !!!

It’s awesome to see the support for animal protection and compassion here but we need so many more comments! It is reassuring to see that I am not the only one who is aware and cares about animal testing and shopping with a conscience. I have known about J&J for quite some time and I just don’t get how they can market themselves a family and “caring” company when they do this BS?!! They need to get with times and so does P&G, Dial, Unilever and a huge number of others. There are over 500 companies that have already made the vow to stop animal testing. It can be done. It just takes the right state of mind and focus. There is no need for animal testing when their are plenty of humane and more reliable forms of animal testing available. People need to open their eyes and shift their focus from the almighty dollar to others that are in need of respect, understanding and compassion.

Seriously….all of you vegan hippie folks need to calm down with this animal testing situation. when (god forbid) you, your mom, your dad, or any other member of your family gets cancer or any other terminal illness, you’ll realize why testing on animals is done. and by the way, no testing is done on cute little puppies/kittens like you try and portray in an effort to get more people to agree with you, it is done on rats, etc., and an occasional animal similar to a human.
so how about this: when you people get cancer, or whatever vegans/anti-animal testing people get (which i hope none of you do), you don’t receive medical treatment because you’re against how the medicine you receive is made. there we go, just refuse medical treatment and everyone’s problem will be solved.
i don’t mean to offend you or any readers of your blog with this comment, but come on now, it’s time to stop with this crazy shit. Vegan clothing….really? that’s just ludacris.

Two million people fall seriously ill enough to require hospitalization; many of those people will die. All due to drugs tested on animals. And you must be okay with that. If you get cancer and die due to unanticipated reactions to medications, what do you do? Praise the testing you use as your justification to rant at vegans because your conscience needs soothing?
Don’t equate vegans with anti-medicine; vegans are not against medicine, they’re against the faulty, archaic, and predominantly cruel arena of animal testing. And, yes, cats and dogs are subjected, I do have USDA documentation to back up my statements.
And refusing treatment will satisfy you only if ALL people refuse treatment. It’s a game of financial gain and glory, the suffering of animals lining the pockets of pharmaceutical giants.
Vegan hippie folks – what is your point?
One last point: veganism reduces the risk of the number one killer of people in industrialized societies: heart disease. It also reduces risk of colon, prostrate, breast, and cardiac cancers.
