For the attention of the members of the Selection Committee of the European Capital of Culture 2016.

I am aware of the fact that the Andalusian city of Cordoba has been nominated for European Capital of Culture 2016. I believe that among the objective of this title is to become the showcase of our culture for the rest of European citizens. However, the bodies promoting the candidature of Cordoba believe, as becomes evident at http://www.asanda.org, that a certain manifestation called “corridas de toros” (bullfights) is part of the culture of the city, when in fact the vast majority of Andalusian, Spanish and European citizens believe that the above-mentioned manifestation is but a minority, sordid and cruel custom which under no consideration represents the culture of a city like Cordoba. Therefore, I respectfully urge you to, in case you should choose Cordoba as a candidate in your final selection, formulate in your report strict recommendations so any bullfighting event or any kind of promotion or publicity of the activity is left out of the program of events of the European Capital of Culture”.

Kind Regards,

BACKGROUND

The Andalusian city of Cordoba has been nominated for European Capital of Culture 2016. The concept “European Capital of Culture” is a title awarded every year by the European Commission and Parliament to two European cities, one from the 13 core member states and one from the current 27 member states which during one year have the possibility to show their cultural life and to the rest of Europe and the world. The aim of the communal action called “European Capital of Culture” is to highlight the richness, diversity and common features of the European cultures, as well as to contribute to a better mutual understanding among citizens of the Union. The candidate cities must have, among others, the following compulsory goals:

  • Emphasize those cultural currents common to Europeans which the city has inspired or to which it has significantly contributed.
  • Guarantee mobilization and participation of significant population groups and, thanks to that, guarantee the social repercussions of the action and its continuity in time beyond the year in which the event has taken place.
  • Boost dialogue between the cultures of Europe and those of the rest of the world, and, furthermore, give understanding and openness towards the others the merit they rightly deserve as fundamental cultural values.

The Cordoba City Council created a Foundation in its day in order to organize everything concerning the candidature of Cordoba for European Capital of Culture. The members of the above-mentioned Foundation are: Cordoba City council, Cordoba Provincial Council, Andalusian Government (Junta) and University of Cordoba. All the above-mentioned founding bodies are consistently and openly showing their conspicuous support to what the majority of European, Spanish, Andalusian an Cordobes citizens firmly believe that must me rejected as a cultural manifestation: bull fighting, a sordid, cruel custom which bears no relation to the true cultural purpose of the institution of European Capital of Culture promoted by the European Parliament and the European Union Council. Thus, to point out only a few of the countless existing examples:

  • Cordoba City Council: In sessions held in September 2010, all political groups in the council (PP, IU y PSOE) passed a joint resolution to show “the most steadfast appreciation of the Cordoba City Council for the bullfighting fiesta which means so much for the culture, history, economy and employment“of the city.
  • Cordoba Provincial Council: Also in sessions held in September 2010 unanimously passed a joint resolution of Socialist Government and opposition (IU y PP), to show “the most steadfast appreciation for the bullfighting fiesta which means so much for our culture, history, economy and employment“
  • The Andalusian Government: in December 2004, The Andalusian Parliament passed a resolution urging their executive body (Consejo de Gobierno) to increase their support for bullfighting and its cultural and artistic values, to encourage knowledge of the activity in the field of education and the role of bullfighting schools as breeding ground for new stars, and to maintain and increase bullfighting programs in Andalusian television, going in depth into its values and its ability to generate artistic creation in the fields of plastic and audio-visual arts and literature.
  • The University of Cordoba: the only Andalusian university to maintain a so-called Professorship of Taurology, which appears among the 16 public plans of Cordoba 2016 for participation and youth. what is a fight
between a bull
and a man
a misguided effort
that we just
cannot stand
a bloodfest of horror
of pain and of fear
there is no sport
nor any culture

I believe Bullfighting is not only cruel but outdated as a sport like they call it in Spain. The Matador is no more than a coward as he leaves the Picadores do all the work in tiring the Bull out and spiking him with picks or whatever they’re called and then when the Matador comes on the Bull is tired and weak because of the loss of blood and all the matador has to do is put his lance into the Bull to kill him. This is plain dreadful and cowardly and what happened to the matador a few months ago where he was gored by the Bull was just what he deserved!

For every action there is a reaction. According to the law of karma, if we cause pain and suffering to other living beings, we must endure pain and suffering in return, both individually and collectively. We reap what we sow, in this life and the next, for nature has her own justice. No one can escape the law of karma
