Chamberlin, a lab-mix, was abandoned and found tethered to a tree, emaciated, and too weak to stand. His frail body was discovered when someone attempted to mow the lawn. Chamberlin endured neglect that no living creature should have to experience. He survived two long, grueling months without food, little water, and no shelter. Nelli Brock and Wilbert Morrison, Jr., have been charged with 2 counts of felony animal cruelty and are expected in court on Friday, October 29, 2010. We have only three days to contact the district attorney asking for the harshest penalty.  You may use the Sample Letter as a guide so that the DA receives a variety of messages.

SAMPLE LETTER TO USE AS A GUIDE, MODIFY & SHORTEN

Dear District Attorney Henderson,

I have learned of extremely disturbing and malicious case of animal cruelty allegedly committed by Ms. Nelli Brock and Mr. Wilbert Morrison, Jr., and I am writing to express my support of imposing the maximum penalty. The victim, a dog named Chamberlin, was deliberately  neglected, forced to endure an agonizing two months tethered to a tree with no food, little water, and no companionship.  As the result of this neglect and subsequent malnutrition, Chamberlin was unable to even walk and was hidden in the tall grasses; he was only found when the lawn was being mowed.  It is essential to recognize that the decision to harm this gentle, innocent non-human animal was premeditated as demonstrated by the chronicle of abusive events beginning with Chamberlin being abandoned.

When I try to imagine what possible motive animal abusers entertain for subjecting their animal victims to such malicious, heinous acts of brutality, I fail, but I am thankful for a lack of cognitive understanding and rationalization. To voluntarily engage in such malicious behaviour suggests sadistic tendencies, and Ms. Brock’s and Mr. Morrison’s behaviour, causing unmitigated pain and suffering, demonstrates their  incontrovertible lack of morality regarding other living beings and a gross disrespect for the law. In fact, a person who shows such a remarkable lack of compassion towards non-human animals has the ability to show such indifference towards human animals. This link between animal and human abuse has been established, and if we excuse this criminal behaviour by offering a lesser punishment we only harm ourselves by unjustly nullifying cruelty as acceptable behaviour.

I as well as a national contingent of concerned people are hoping that you will take an unyielding position against animal cruelty and hold these two accountable by sentencing them in accordance with the maximum penalty allowed. If the justice system does not administer the harshest penalty available, it is indeed excusing this malicious behaviour towards sentient beings, and to excuse this type of cruelty harms all by disregarding the basic moral tenet of respecting life and appreciating the value of it. Apathy permeates throughout society and damages all, and we therefore need to teach our children that the law does not excuse, allow, or enable cruelty against human or non-human animals. We need to demonstrate in both word and action that the human essence of empathy does not exist to excuse maliciousness, it exists to provide compassion and justice to the brutalized and punishment to those who willingly deviate from this capacity. If we do not do our duty to provide this, we harm animals and invite injustice into our society.

I know your time is limited and I want to thank you for your attention and consideration.

If these low-lives are NOT sent to prison for the unspeakable tortures they’ve inflicted on this poor innocent dog, then there is something very wrong with our Courts. This poor dog has suffered in every way possible…if these scum didn’t want the dog, why on earth keep it in such horrifying conditions……I would like someone to make this pair of sub humans suffer the same plight for just a few months…then let’s see how they like it!!!!!!

I wonder how they would react if someone tied their children to a tree for two months with just a few drops of water????

I believe that this couple of scum bags should have their children taken away (If they have any)….The Judge should give them at least 25 years in prison..no visitors at all.. and very little food and water…and let them feel what it’s like to SUFFER like that poor pup did….I just don’t understand why no one noticed this abuse before……REMEMBER.JAIL TIME..LITTLE FOOD AND WATER….AND SUFFER

There is no way these ingrates should even be considered for community service, nor any type misdeamedor… This poor baby suffered ALONE for over 2 months!!!! They have earned their jail time, plus the monetary costs till this pup is ready to go to a good home.. Also, never to be able to own/given,watch another dog for as long as they live.. , or live in this state.. These cowards need to be on a “Watch List” to be passed to every shelter, rescue, foster home, & etc. in all the states.. We need to pass a law in all states for animal abusers to permanenly be on a “SCUMBAG WANTED lIST”…. “SCARE CRIMINALS UNDER MAXIMUM BEHAVIOR AGAINST GOD’S (ANIMALS)….

On the wicked people on this earth. My heart shank as I looked at the photos of Chamberlin the lab mix a mere skeleton disfigured from lack of food, water and exercised. Yet in spite of all the extreme cruelty inflicted on him he’s still alive with a sweet disposition. The kind of dog I’d like to have. If those people claimed that it wasn’t their dog why didn’t they call the humane society or somebody who could help this little fella? They could of fed him in the mean time. No, this looks like a deliberate case of intent to make a dog suffer in the worst way possible. I hope they get what they deserve, behind bars. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. The deranged human beings, that do this, should get the worse penalty, that can be handed down. How could they sleep at night, I will never know. Since most animal abusers, start with defenseless animals, and esculate to humans, these people should not by any means be overlooked! They deserve the same treatment, but unfortunatly here in America we do not do that, An eye for an eye, they should be sent to the harshest, maximum security, and sent to a hard labor camp, set up for these deranged people! And fed once in a while!!
If they say it was not their animal, why didn’t they just give the animal to someone or a shelter. No Mercy for them!!!They should also pay restution to the courts, the vets, then double to the courts and Vets again! And that is while in prison! And hope this dog finds a loving home for the rest of is life!

    Dear Mr. Henderson:

I am numb…I am ill…I have watched the video’s for Chamberlin and tears of horror are upon me:
Camberlin is “hanging on” for his life…I CANNOT IMAGINE(CAN YOU???) what it had to be like for this “precious soul” to be in this circumstance because of human ignorance…

Chamberlin: this “innocent” soul has suffered in the most horrific way “starvation and water deprivation” because of human cruelty and neglect. Now he has to be rehabilitated back to health: perhaps he will never have the health he was born with because of this inhumane atrocity. We have no right to make any creature on earth suffer as Chamberlin has: just because we can: if this was a child – the laws are set accordingly… animal rights should be corrected to the laws of children as animals are just as innocent and born to bring us love unconditionally…

You have the decision to bring justice for Chamberlin: you have to decide what animals represent in our human world: you have the power to change (set an example for all humans who mistreat any animals) the laws for cruelty to animals: you must let humans ‘know” who mistreat animals to this extreme: that they will have to equal their crime in prison, penalty of monetary fines, restitution for any rehabilitation for the animal they abused: if cruelty has already been done once to an animal without conscience: be assured they will do it again: unless they have a “wake-up” call and begin to understand what cruelty they have put any animal through…

I will be praying for your “right decision” to pass the “laws of justice” to the humans who lacked the “human” qualities of compassion, mercy, kindness, intelligence and love to Chamberlin who was born “defenseless”…
Protect our beloved animals: be their voice for justice: they are on our earth to “teach” us: all we need to do is: “listen”: “watch”: “learn”: they will always show us “understanding” of a higher dimension of love…

Being a “humanitarian” in this world is easy for most humans who have the gift of compassion: it is just hard trying to convince the “others” to understand just what it is like to be “human”…

As far as im concerned, doing this to an animal is just as bad as doing it to a human being. Animals need our protection, our love and respect. She deserves to be jailed for attemted murder as far as im concerned. If they can do this to an animal, what is to say they aren’t doing it to humans.

TO: Doug Henderson, Guilford County DA

    Dear Mr. Henderson:

I am writing to urge you to prosecute to the fullest extent of the law the two people who inhumanely starved and neglected Chamberlain with blatant indifference and disregard for his pain and suffering for at least two months.

This crime is a very serious matter. Extreme animal abuse of this kind represents nothing less than a breach of the fundamental principles underlying our civilization. I hope that you will ask the judge to view it as a conscious and calculated offence against all life, human and non-human, and to sentence the offenders accordingly.

In my opinion, harming an animal needlessly (with malice of forethought in this case) is no different than child abuse in that it causes irreparable harm to a helpless dependent unable to defend itself. In such instances, these helpless creatures have no one to speak for them but prosecutors like yourself. Furthermore, if the law does not respond swiftly and justly to this crime, statistics show that these individuals are very likely to move on to human victims, young and old.

I hope and pray that you will respond to my plea, not merely to “send a message”, but to insure that justice prevails in the true sense of the word.

    Sincerely,

    Francesca Rogier

It has been documented and recognized that those who abuse animals will in turn, direct that abuse towards Humans. Not a ” NEW ” concept, but one that seems to get repeated because most Humans in this world simply don’t care about animals.
We need to stop this line of ignorance!
Not only does there need to be an example here, but the premeditated seriousness of this, and what harm it caused is inexcusable, disgusting, and a future threat to anyone in their path.
We respectfully ask that the harshest penalty and longest jail time be imposed, and that you make this a public as possible to use as an example from your office, as to what happens on your watch when it comes to the sickening example of animal abuse.
If you have a pet, look in to their eyes tonight, and imagine them tied to a tree, left to die a slow agonizing death.
Convict to the fullest extent of the law!
This is just one, of the many pathetic sad cases that again, involve Humans, who were meant to shepherd the weak.
Be that beacon of light, that the helpless, (Elderly ,Children, & Animal) can rely on!

I am so totally shocked, why did he go so long with out food and water… What kinda neighbor do they live in? I am not nosey person but I try at all time to be aware of what is going on around me and where things are happening…. As for those sub-human cretins, I really do think they need to be tried on felony charges. What they did is just let that dog lay out there and be miserable and not understand why or what was going on, I AM suprised to see that he did not try to eat one of his feet. When I live in the country, it was not uncomman to see that when you would come and fine a animal traped in a steel traped. My husband and I both hated them so bad, he would go and wrestle with them until he could get them free. We always carried food and water for the animals, mostly strays that people would come to the country and throw out and think okay they are in the woods they can take care of themselves… How stupid can you get?? We tried to save them as much as we could and not just domestic one either. We did any thing we found that needed care. But even then those dumb people were trying in their minds to give them a chance. These people just couldn’t have cared less.. What they did is an admoniation in the eyes of the lord and they will be judge by him…also. You really should make a exsample out of them because they asked for it ….. I hope the dog makes it and lives a good life he really deserves it, for being as strong as he was.. I hope they rot in their own waste.

    Dear A.D.A. Henderson,

Some of the greatest minds and spirits of the human race have noted that a society is properly judged by the way it treats it animals. As they are subject to our wills and whims, if we treat them as objects, disposable chattel, that reflects upon our dark side. When we inflict misery, whether directly by our hand or as a result of callous indifference, we go beyond neglect, beyond nonfeasance and into malicious acts. And, to paraphrase Pogo, that which we allow, we condone/permit. To allow the despicable, deplorable injuries inflicted upon the young dog known as Chamberlin to go unpunished would indeed be a severe indictment against all of us, every one of us in this nation. When we take the liberty away from a creature, we become responsible for that creature’s care. Even while living in Africa the poorest parts of Africa, I have never seen a dog allowed to become THAT threadbare without someone coming along with compassion.

In our land, the punishment must be suitable to the crime. If Chamberlin were their human child, this would be a capital crime, and suitable sentence might include Life in prison, or even death, both as a punitive measure, to deter such vile actions in the future, and to protect society from such a one as would perpetuate a crime so horrible as this. Chamberlin being “just a dog,” it is unlikely that such a sentence will be passed down, though many may feel it appropriate. The solid conclusion is that those who abuse animals in such fashion either have or will do the same to others which are vulnerable to their authority. But we must not allow this crime to be taken lightly. If we do, we do so at our own peril. As you know, you have been entrusted to represent the People — not only in your fair state of North Carolina, but all over this land, for the defendants may one day come to abuse others in other places, should they become free without our society being protected.

I encourage you to seek the very most stringent deterrent allowable by your laws, in every count. I implore you to be relentless, and not to allow the defendant’s representation to attempt to reduce or mitigate their culpability through any means. It may seem reasonable to say, for example, that they assumed someone else would come and find the pup in short order. To do so is not the action of a reasonable person. A reasonable adult ensures that such responsibilities have been met. I’d also ask you not to allow them to excuse their behavior with pleas of addiction, alcoholism, or other such condition. Even the worst of drug addicts knows better than to perpetrate such a crime, and to check and be certain that the creature has been released and is cared for, if by no other means than by informing authorities of his presence and condition. Even if they were incarcerated, they could still let their jailers know that the animal in their care is at risk. There can be no acceptable defense, and I hope you will not allow such empty pleas to go unchallenged, nor accept any sort of plea bargain deal which does not provide for the maximum sentence allowed by law. I would also ask that you ask the judge to order that the defendants serve the entirety of their sentence, and that it not be a life of luxury. Rather than improving their lot by gaining a degree at our expense, let them begin repaying the debt by serving your community in some fashion while remaining firmly incarcerated. I would also ask that you require that the defendants be ordered to be nowhere near a domestic animal, nor be in charge of any wild creature, for as long as they both shall live. We simply cannot risk that even a fraction of such abuse would be repeated.

I have heard (even) government employees utter “All this over a DAWG!?” We are an evolving society. A mere 100 years ago, we might well have heard someone express the same disbelief and distain for people of color, or other minorities. It is not how we treat our dignitaries that defines us, but how we treat the least of those amongst us… and how we defend them when the power over them has been abused. In this case, you have the opportunity to speak loudly and clearly for We The People, in saying that we are not that vulgar being, that we neither permit nor allow such atrocities to continue amongst us.

I wish you the best of luck at the proceedings to come. Feel free to present this email to both judge and jury, as you see fit.

    Best regards,

The person who left Chamberlain to die should be left in prison forever. There is no excuse for this kind of behavior. If this woman isn’t prosecuted to the fullest, then other inhumane people will feel free to abuse their animals. If they know there will be a heavy price to pay, maybe they will think twice before abusing their animals.

THIS WAS A DELIBERATE ACT!! HE DENIED THE DOG WAS EVEN HIS AS A PATHETIC ATTEMPT TO GET HIMSELF OFF THE HOOK! NO OBVIOUS REMORSE SO THEY NEED A SENTENCE TO MAKE THEIR JAWS DROP IN DISBELIEF! THEY BOTH SHOULD HAVE VERY LOW CARE OF BLAND BASICS IN PRISON WITH NO INTERACTION ON A SOCIAL LEVEL… ONLY TO KNOW CONTEMPT FROM PRISON OFFICERS FOR A VERY LONG TIME INDEED. THREE YEARS MINIMUM IN JAIL ON DRY STALE BREAD AND WATER SHOULD BE THE MINIMUM PUNISHMENT CONSIDERED..JUST LIKE THEY TREATED THIS CHAINED DECAYING LOVABLE BOY!

There is no excuse for animal abuse. Please show that animal abuse will not be tolerated and punish the abusers to the highest. It is happening far too often and they abusers get off far too lightly. This needs to change, the law should reflect that this will not be ignored and animal abusers should be treated the same as child abusers as the animals are just as vunerable as children and they feel pain and suffer just the same as children do.

These two pieces of trash need to sit in the hot sun for two months, chanied to a tree with no food and water……..it’s the only way pieces of sh*t like this will learn. Others might get a little nervous about doing it too.

When these subhuman sociopaths begin to receive harsh sentencing, as opposed to the wrist-slaps they’ve historically received, perhaps then this cruelty will end.

Why on earth these evil scumbags do this to these poor dogs? If they can’t keep them or feed them, they should give them away insted of torturing poor animals. If they didn’t get harsher punishments, judge should be ashamed to call himself a human. This is beyond cruelty.

Dear little Chamberlin, you have seen the hell and come back to see the love of real humans. We will never abandon you again. We will fight for you and send those evil beings where they belong. Until then fight my little one, be strong we all love you.

They deserve the most jail time given. All you have to do is look at the video and pictures of this poor dog to see how he suffered and his will to survive, and after all that he has suffered he can still wag his tail and show that he is still full of love. He deserves justice. Lock these horrible monsters away with out food and water and see how they do. Please give these poor innocent animals the justice they deserve. Do the right thing buy them. Thank you

I try really hard to believe that for the most part, Everyone has good in them and that most people are good, but when i see these stories (and there are far too many worldwide) that my mind and heart doubt ALL HUMANITY.
laws must be changed and enforced, but before that happens, People need to see and stop looking away, turning the page or changing the channel as if, what we don’t see it, doesn’t exist.
We, ALL HUMANITY, need to take responsibility for this, “Chamberlins Story” is just one of millions world wide that happen everyday of every minute. even right now at this second.
So don’t be enraged or sad or shocked when you read these stories and then forget when you turn the page or walk away. This will continue to go on as time goes on, unless we do something REAL like change Laws or change the people we pay to Pass and enforce them. WE ARE EVERYTHING WE DO. Get Involved Even in the smallest way by Educating our children, Voting to stop the breeding and sale of pets, Not buying anything from pet stores that do, voting out of office your local representative that does not support the closing of all puppy mills or alerting the authorities when you see or suspect animal abuse or even just passing on this message. PLEASE RESUE-DON”T BUY. God Bless Chamberlin and all the voices that speak up for him.

At nearly 70 years of age this is perhaps the cruelest I have witnessed committed by 2 people. Apalling is not descriptive enough. It is difficult to accept that there are people capable of such a heinous event. But fortunately there are many, many more people who have the courage to take up for God’s helpless creatures. May those who have taken up Chamberlain’s care be blessed for their undying love!
