Help Stop the Federal Wolf Killing Plan

***Please note that this is open only to US friends.

From:
Defenders of Wildlife
The federal Wildlife Services agency (a branch of the U.S. Department of Agriculture) is the primary wolf-killer in the United States — and now want to expand their wolf-killing operations. They plan to work with Idaho officials to eliminate up to 80 percent of the wolves in north-central Idaho by land and from the air.

Their plan also includes killing entire packs — including gassing helpless wolf pups in their dens — and surgically sterilizing alpha wolf pairs.

This unacceptable killing plan cannot be allowed to go forward — especially since wolves in Greater Yellowstone and the Northern Rockies regained protections under the Endangered Species Act.

Please take action now to speak out against the Wildlife Services plan to expand their wolf-killing role in Idaho.

Idaho officials are claiming that wolves are the major cause of elk declines in parts of the state. But in 23 of the 29 elk management zones, populations of these animals are at or above population targets — many of the areas experiencing declines in elk numbers contain no wolves. And the Clearwater National Forest was experiencing steep declines in elk numbers by 1988 — long before wolves returned to the area.

MESSAGE TEXT:

As a supporter of Defenders of Wildlife and a citizen concerned about the long-term recovery of wolves in the Greater Yellowstone and Northern Rockies region, I am writing today to speak out against Wildlife Services’ outrageous plans to drastically expand the types of lethal methods used to kill federally protected wolves.

The latest plan outlined in Wildlife Services’ Draft Environmental Assessment Gray Wolf Damage Management in Idaho discards science-based management and harkens back to the days of the agency’s wholesale slaughter of wolves and other native predators.

The plan calls for killing off entire packs by tracking and shooting them from the air, gassing pups in their dens and even calls for alpha wolf pairs to be surgically sterilized.

The gassing of pups in their dens and sterilization are inappropriate for a species listed under the Endangered Species Act. These methods do not represent responsible wildlife management for the 21st century. In addition, the use of gas is not even currently legal and likely would not be approved by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service or the Environmental Protection Agency.

The wolf-killing methods outlined in the Environmental Assessment are inappropriate and conflict with Wildlife Services’ mission to “create a balance that allows people and wildlife to coexist peacefully.”

Wolves were reintroduced into the northern Rockies to fulfill their ecological role as part of nature. Their return to their historic range has resulted in a more balanced landscape resulting in an increase in species diversity, healthy watersheds, and stronger elk herds. Killing wolves for doing what they naturally do — namely preying on elk — is scientifically indefensible.

Moreover, the use of predator control to prevent livestock loss is merely a temporary solution. New wolves move into territory vacated by the killed wolves, often to continue the cycle of livestock predation unless the root cause is addressed.

I don’t want my tax dollars to be used to kill native wildlife under this misguided and archaic scheme. Wildlife Services should instead reduce wildlife conflicts and encourage peaceful coexistence with predators by using and promoting nonlethal tools and best management practices to preemptively reduce livestock loss.

Wolves remain protected under the Endangered Species Act, but the Environmental Assessment analyzing this proposal assumes they would be delisted. Wildlife Services must go back and revise the EA based on the ESA protections and do a complete Environmental Impact Statement of predator control in the Northern Rockies region — not just on wolf control — on a state by state basis.

Thank you for considering my comments on this important matter.

No one should be killing any animals wild or not, we are a nation in the us to love animals not harm them last time I checked. I do not like wild animals for they hunt and ill innocent other animals as well. I feel we should take them and put them where they wont harm animals and should be spayed/neutred so they do not keep having babies and thus we have this now. Let the breed die out I am sorry but we are trying to stop puppy mills, euthanasia and yet we let wild animals such as wolves hunt and kill other babies from other breeds or adults for that matter. not make sense to me. let the wolf breed die out.

Are you nuts. Let the whole wolf breed die out. We have encroached on their land over the years. They have a right to live just as much as you. We kill animals all the time to eat and live. Should we get rid of us for killing pigs and cows so we can survive. This is part of life. They eat to survive. Every animal has a place in the food chain and no animal including us should be hunted and killed to extinction ever. It messes up the whole eco system. Sorry but who gives us the right to say which animal should live or die. You need to get a clue whoever you are.

Irina, thank you so much for letting me know, I’ll change it to US only. (On the letter address field, Canadian provinces are included so I assumed you could sign as well. It must be a default that is only open when appropriate.)

    Thank you!

This is a crime against nature.. against creation and the Creator, and there is no justification for it. We are judged by our actions. Please do the right thing and prevent the killing of these innocents.

It’s past the time for man to stop playing God! We obliterate a species to near extinction, then try to save it by declaring it endangered. As soon as the species recovers, some idiot declares them a nusance and opens season on them again taking them right back to the brink of extinction again. Stop the yo-yo and stop playing God! If man were to just leave nature alone it would balance itself out. Predators are a very neccessary part of the ecosystem. They prey on the old, weak and ill keeping herds healthy. By killing the strongest members of any species we only leave the weak and ill to re-populate. How ignorant is that???

This is pure mismanagement of wildlife, again catering to Special Interests, ranchers and hunters. “Trophy” hunting for wolves is the name of the game, and not one of those hunters even gives a damn about a ranchers livestock animals. Noxious weeds are a far greater threat to livestock (and limiting lands available for grazing) but are they all fired up and addressing factors like that? Nope. Nary a plan at all for that.

Ranchers are allowed to protect their livestock, always have been.

We have our USDA Wildlife Services planting insanely toxic poison bombs targeted at predators. There is no way to follow up on what these poison bombs are killing, but they have killed or harmed many non-target animals – including humans. And our taxes pay for it.

If it were up to Our Compass, global signature participation would be allowed. However, the sponsors of this alert, Defenders of Wildlife, in accordance with legal parameters, are only asking for US signatures given that it is a US Federal decision and action that is murdering animals. Animal cruelty and animal rights know no boundaries, we all know this, but political and governmental regulations only allow for those within the United States to comment on this particular alert.

Thank you for commenting your thoughts, though, we welcome those from anyone at anytime.

Mary Bale Could Face Prison Time for Lola the Cat

Posted on August 26th, 2010 in Mary Bale by lalate

Mary Bale Could Face Prison Time for Lola the Cat

LONDON (LALATE) – Mary Bale’s cat in bit troubles over Lola the Cat could result in six months in prison. Male Bale has met with the RSPCA over her actions towards Lola the Cat, actions which she called “fun”, a “joke”, over the pet she refers to as simply “it”.

RSPCA, an animal charity, is concluding its investigations of Mary Bale and today confirms that it will in fact send Bale’s case out to prosecutors. “Mary Bale has been interviewed by an RSPCA inspector and a full file is being compiled and will be sent for review by the prosecutions department.” Bale faces being charged under the Animal Welfare Act. That charge carries a maximum sentence of six months in prison reports SKY News.

Lola the cat was trapped 15 hours in a bin, referred to as the “wheelie bin” in English news. Owners Stephanie and Daryll Mann couldn’t find Lola until they heard her meowing in terror outside their flat in Coventry . The episode was captured on a CCTV and then re-posted on YouTube. But yesterday, the story took new life as Bale gave comments that further enraged animal lovers.

First, when asked why she did it, Bale said she thought it was fun, for a “joke”. Second, Bale then said “I don’t know what the fuss is about. It’s JUST a cat.” Third, she said it was no big deal because she expected Lola “to wriggle out”. Fourth, she didn’t refer to the beloved pet as Lola, or the cat, but simply “it”.

Wolves have the right to live just like everything else.Man in the past has really messed up the world. Our animals that are living out there wild and free deserve to live.It makes me sad to know I live in such a country that does not respect the life of any type of animal especially the wolves.I am very very ashamed of them type of people that are running this bad operation.Maybe the Gov. needs to have them evil wolf killers gassed and so on.This makes me so mad. There is enough land for everything if man would leave nature alone and let her do her work.Make the cattle men and sheep people out of the animals habitats.

I had signed the petition. Wolf slaughter is utterly barbaric and repulsive. It’s nauseating that some people still think that they have the right to decide which species have the right to live…the arrogance! Humans are not gods, we too are animals and are equally a part of nature. Have respect for all forms of life and the environment…no man is an island.

All living things deserve rights. Humans, wildlife, domestic animals, insects and yes- trees and plants deserve rights too! All living things have their place in nature, and we must respect that. All organisms have some form of intelligence. They all feel fear, comfort, pain, excitability, stress etc. We share many of the same emotions, we’re not all that different. Every living being has the right to live and should never be treated like an object. We have no right to unnecessarily harm any living thing or to select and choose which beings “deem worthy” of protection. They all need protection and respect because it’s the civilized thing to do.

Sorry for writing so much…I was taught to always respect everything that was created by nature.
