& Nature Alert, Dedicated to helping save orangutans and their forest homes

Dear Friend of the Orangutans,

Please could you (re)send the letter below as soon as possible? Norway has agreed to give $1 billion to Indonesia in the hope it will save trees. This money should at least buy him some influence, so let’s give this another shot shall we? I wrote to the Prime Minister two weeks ago, but have yet to receive a reply.

If any email is ‘rejected’ it will only be because their inbox is full – a good sign, so please just send the next day, etc. Besides these emails COP is active on this issue in Indonesia, as are friends in Thailand.

Once again on behalf of the orangutans, thank you. 2000 emails every day will make an impression on these officials. At some stage one is going to give us what we want to see – 11 oranguatns going home to Indonesia.

p.s. Please feel free to add your name to the end of the letter. It is not essential, but will help.  Sean

SUBJECT:
Please save the orangutans, $1 billion reason to help eleven of them today!

SAMPLE LETTER (I do not know who wrote this note for credit, if you do, please let me know.) Please copy everything between the two ************** :

Dear Prime Minister Stoltenberg,

I am writing to you again as someone who is appalled and sickened by the Indonesian Ministry of Forestry. The same Ministry and government to whom you are going to entrust $1 billion of your taxpayers money.

For the past 18 months the Ministry has abandoned 11 orangutans to a fate like the abused individuals abandoned in 2006 in Thailand.

http://naturealert.blogspot.com/

All 11 were stolen from the forests of Indonesia some 18 months ago. Their mothers first had to be shot or slashed to death with a machete. You can read the horrific nature of this massacre at the following news site:

http://www.nationmultimedia.com/search/read.php?newsid=30096344&keyword=orangutans

There are no physical or financial barriers to the orangutans being returned home to Indonesia and a specialist rescue center is waiting for them. Indonesian government malaise is the only reason for the 18 month delay.

Please will you use your undoubted influence to have the 11 orangutans repatriated without further delay? I am quite sure a phone call from you or your representative to Indonesia, will see these orangutans on their way home very soon. When this happens I imagine your children would be both pleased with and proud of you. You have the opportunity to save 11 orangutans from torture and early death. The question now is: WILL YOU?

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

A Friend of the Orangutans.

11 Orangutans rescued from private zoo

By The Nation, Published on February 23, 2009

Officers raid Crocodile and Tiger World in Phuket, where animals were being held illegally

In a raid that has only recently been reported, a team of National Parks Department officers and wildlife activists on February 5 raided a private zoo in Phuket City and rescued 11 young orangutans being held there illegally to serve as a tourist attraction.

The successful raid followed several reports from tourists to the non-governmental Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT) that ten young orangutans were on display at Crocodile and Tiger World, a private zoo located in Phuket City.

The zoo also features more than 10,000 crocodiles, Bengal tigers, ostriches and gibbons. Attractions at the zoo allow people to bottle feed baby tigers for a small fee and watch an attractive young woman stick her head into the mouth of an enormous crocodile.

WFFT secretary-general Edwin Wiek said the raid followed several tip-offs from tourists aware of the plight of the highly endangered orangutans. They sent in pictures and video clips of the primates, which Wiek used to convince officials to organise a January 22 raid on the zoo.

Unfortunately, the first raid was unsuccessful because the media leaked news of the impending raid in time for the zoo owner to hide the apes.

In the successful second raid, carried out on February 5, authorities found 11 orangutans ranging in age from less than two years old to about five years in a small stock room, Wiek said. All 11 animals are now being given medical checks at the WFFT’s Rescue Centre in Ratchaburi, he said.

“Two of them are actually quite sick, having trouble with parasites. The other ones weren’t fed the right foods and have some bad dental problems. I don’t think they will go back to Indonesia soon – or even if they’ll go back – because in Indonesia there is so much trouble with the animals in captivity. But at least this zoo is not going to exploit them any longer or import.

11 orangutans lives are on hold
    stolen from their forest homes
    by humans, so cold
    as they watched their mothers
    butchered, for hunger of greed
it is time to step up to
    the plate
    and do a good deed
    in indonesia a specialist
    rescue center
    a safe primate haven
    is waiting to take them
    will their lives
    you be saving?
