For the very first time, the South Korean government is considering phasing out bear farming.
With our member society, Green Korea United (GKU), WSPA is participating in discussions with the South Korean government about permanently ending this cruelty. Please help us convince them to phase out bear farming and end the lifetime of suffering endured by these bears.
Right now more than 1,400 bears suffer on bear farms in South Korea. These bears are confined to cramped, barren cages until the age of 10, when they are then slaughtered for their bile, which is then used in Traditional Asian Medicine. This industry is still legal under South Korean law.
Bear farming is cruel. The captive conditions greatly restrict the bears’ movements and have a terrible impact on their wellbeing. WSPA has witnessed bears rocking and pacing in their small cages, and seen the severe wounds, sores and stress caused by confining them.
Bear farming is unnecessary. Academics, experts and Traditional Asian Medicine advocates in South Korea agree that there are many readily available herbal and synthetic alternatives to bear bile. Even bear farmers in South Korea acknowledge that their farms are losing money and they are prepared to consider a phase out.
The South Korean government is willing to find a way to end this suffering. Government officials have been in discussions with WSPA and GKU about ending bear farming. This September, a bill to phase out bear farming will be proposed to the Korean parliament for the government to deliberate.

This is a such great news. It is about time they see that it is so wrong. The bears live in these cramped cages and really lose it, imagine living in that from birth till you die, with something inserted in you with no medical attention. For some moon bears as they are called help came just in time, for others I believe it did not. Those that have been rescued are suffering from serious infections where that tube is inserted. Oh, I can not even imagine the pain they feel, but have to endure it. It is the year 2010 and this is not medicine or science, it is abuse and torture. I am happy to see the Korean Government taking a stand. I hope that this doesn’t go underground now. They have to be alert to that. Will you all please join me in signing any petitions to end Bear Farming in this region and other Asian Regions. Please if you can post a comment, hoping these comments will be sent to Embassy etc.

People of Korea, only you can help stop this crime against nature. The bear is noble creature and in your own legends the first king of Korea, Tan-gun, was born from a she-bear! Please honour your past and let the bears live the dignified life they deserve. Thank you.
