From Prison to Paradise: Extraordinary 2,000 Mile Journey of Hope for 55 Rescued Monkeys

In Defense of Animals

Until last week, these 55 monkeys were imprisoned in a private New Jersey toxicology lab. We don’t know what exactly they were doing to the monkeys. We do know that the monkeys, who are 4 – 6 years old, were, according to the lab, being held in individual housing, isolated from each other. Some enclosures even faced the wall at one point, so they couldn’t even see other monkeys – just one of numerous violations of the Animal Welfare Act cited by the USDA that attest to the anguish these monkeys endured in the lab, including psychological suffering so severe that some were pulling hair out from their chest, shoulders and forearms.

Had we not helped rescue them, these young monkeys faced decades behind bars in cramped stainless steel cages, forced to endure painful toxicology tests – or sold to other labs for even more invasive and possibly terminal experiments. Now they will have a life filled with fresh air, friends, and freedom from harm.

I wish you had been there with me to witness the monkeys experiencing the outside world for the first time. Upon entering their new habitats they brushed their hands through the green grass, the wind blowing through their fur, and they stared up into the sun, taking in the immense blue sky for the first time. They had been held in cruel solitary confinement, deprived of crucial relationships with their own species. This sad existence is now behind them. They are beginning to bond with one another and form the intimate, complex relationships that come naturally to these social animals.

Their lives were completely revolutionized in just a few short days thanks to your compassion and dedication. They have inspired us to renew our commitment to end the institutionalized abuse that is animal experimentation.
