HighestWelfare.Humane.Assured.GoodPractices.Vegetarian. Regenerative.Flexitarian.Lies...

What is the difference between No Welfare, High Welfare, and Highest Welfare when they all require animals to die? Only human comfort, NONE protect the actual animals. The most humane, ethical, and honest Webster-defined "welfare" is NOT exploiting animals - not using, not wearing, not eating, not killing - animals. The only meaningful position is vegan, everything else is just how humans euphemize animals' required suffering and violent deaths: no human exploits animals because they honestly believe that NOT exploiting animals is UNethical or INhumane.

Help Animals Imprisoned by SeaWorld

August 17, 2012
by

Wikimedia Commons

BACKGROUND

In aquariums, dolphins and other sea animals routinely die prematurely from stress and other captivity-related causes, and SeaWorld has an abysmal record.

SeaWorld continues to turn a blind eye to the safety of humans and animals alike despite numerous tragedies—including the deaths of many orcas and the death of a trainer who was seized by a frustrated orca, thrown against the walls of the tank, and held under water to drown.

The intelligent, social ocean animals kept in the pitifully small tanks at SeaWorld are denied everything that is natural and important to them. In the wild, dolphins swim up to 100 miles a day in the open ocean, but captive dolphins are confined to small tanks in which the reverberations from their sonar bounce off the walls, driving them insane. Some of these animals were violently captured and torn away from their homes in the wild, and many are forced to learn and perform circus-style tricks. According to whistleblower tips from trainers, withholding food and isolating animals who refuse to perform are common training methods.

The only thing that people learn from visiting a SeaWorld theme park is how miserable life is for the animals confined there. Children see mere shadows of animals, defeated beings who do not engage in natural behavior and cannot live as nature intended. Marine parks teach all the wrong lessons: that it is acceptable to imprison animals; to deprive them of freedom of movement and thought; to forbid them the chance to establish their natural territory and explore; to breed and separate them as we, not they, please; and to watch them go insane from boredom and loneliness.

You can help the animals imprisoned by SeaWorld today. Please take a moment to write to The Blackstone Group—the company that owns SeaWorld—and ask that it immediately set in place a firm and rapid plan to release the animals to sanctuaries that can provide them with a more natural environment.

Please keep all correspondence polite, as anything less will hurt our efforts.

Please Release SeaWorld’s Animals to Sanctuaries

SAMPLE LETTER

To Whom It Concerns,

I am shocked that SeaWorld continues to exploit marine animals for entertainment despite the many tragedies that the park has faced, including the horrifying recent incident in which a trainer was killed by a whale and the deaths of numerous captive orcas. These events did not have to happen, and I appeal to you to take strong action now so that similar tragedies never occur again.

The intelligent, social ocean animals kept in the pitifully small tanks at SeaWorld are denied everything that is natural and important to them. Please make the humane decision to start moving the captive orcas and other marine mammals to transitional coastal and wildlife sanctuaries and replace them with state-of-the-art virtual reality and animatronic exhibits that wow youngsters and adults alike.

Thank you for your attention to this urgent appeal.

Background | Source PCRM

Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia informed PCRM this week that it has replaced the use of kittens with nonanimal training methods to teach future pediatricians.

This change is the result of PCRM’s yearlong campaign and the support of our members. More than 26,000 e-mails were sent to Albert Einstein Medical Center’s administrators over the past three months encouraging the hospital to take this progressive step, and the medical center listened!

A certified letter from Albert Einstein Medical Center informed PCRM that the hospital has “discontinued the use of animals to teach endotracheal intubation.” The hospital now joins the 97 percent of pediatrics residency programs in the United States and Canada that view nonanimal methods as not only more humane but educationally superior.

Because of this progressive change at Albert Einstein Medical Center, PCRM is cancelling our demonstration scheduled for Aug. 15, and we will turn our attention elsewhere. If you were planning to attend, thank you for your dedication and support.

Unfortunately, while Albert Einstein has decided to make this necessary change, East Carolina University (ECU) continues to use ferrets in endotracheal intubation training. Please contact ECU Brody School of Medicine dean Paul R.G. Cunningham, M.D., F.A.C.S., and ask him to replace the use of ferrets with human-based medical simulation.

Petition Text

I am writing to ask that you immediately end the use of ferrets in the East Carolina University (ECU) pediatrics residency program. The use of live animals for this purpose is cruel and outdated. Ferrets used in this training have suffered tracheal bleeding and may also suffer bruising, scarring, and other permanent injury. Ninety-five percent of pediatrics residency programs in the United States and Canada use human-based simulation methods for this training. ECU is also the last program in North Carolina to use animals for this training. It is time for ECU to end this cruel and unnecessary practice.

Background | Source Change

A few weeks ago, Herlinda Trio tied her dog (who had just had 10 puppies) to the back of her truck with a rope, and drove until her precious dog broke his neck and died. Herlinda deserves to be locked up forever, but since Texas law only holds animal abusers in jail for up to 2 years, we would like her to be locked up that long. Make the state of Texas take away all of Trio’s puppies, and ban her from ever owning another animal again. She doesn’t deserve to own an animal, and she doesn’t deserve to be a free woman. Lock her up for the maximum time, and ban her from owning animals so we can bring justice to her dog.

BACKGROUND | SOURCE PETA

On Wednesday, August 15, the Pahrump Regional Planning Commission will decide whether to approve a permit that would allow serial animal abuser Karl Mitchell to keep tigers and ligers. We need your help to make sure that it does not approve the permit. Mitchell has been fined thousands of dollars and had his U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) license revoked for violating the Animal Welfare Act by, for example, cruelly withholding water as a training technique, forcing animals to live in enclosures filled with their own waste, failing to provide animals with veterinary care, and keeping large cats in cages too small for them. Mitchell is also currently under investigation by both the USDA and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for continuing to exhibit animals after the USDA revoked his exhibition license and for illegally transporting a tiger across state lines. He even shot a tiger who became nervous when Mitchell was transporting him because he could not manage the tiger.

Please send an e-mail to Chairperson Terry Hand and members of the Pahrump Regional Planning Commission (at threalty@pahrump.com; jkoenigRPC@sbcglobal.net; gth2@pucihafen.com; goodearchitect@live.com; jseatonmccall@ymail.com; citymgr1@gmail.com; imvicky@aol.com; aborasky@co.nye.nv.us) and tell them that Mitchell, who has no respect for animals or for the law, should not be allowed to keep exotic animals in Pahrump. SAMPLE LETTER

Dear Chairperson Hand and Pahrump Regional Planning Commission members,

On Wednesday, August 15, the Pahrump Regional Planning Commission will decide whether to approve a permit that would allow serial animal abuser Karl Mitchell to keep tigers and lions, and I am respectfully requesting you deny this permit.

When I try to imagine what possible motive animal abusers entertain for subjecting their animal victims to such neglect and acts of brutality, I fail, but I am thankful for a lack of cognitive understanding and rationalization. To engage in such behaviour absolutely suggests negative tendencies and demonstrates an incontrovertible lack of morality regarding other living beings and a gross disrespect for the law. In fact, a person who shows such a remarkable lack of compassion towards animals has, disturbingly enough, the ability to show such indifference towards humans.

Mitchell, who has no respect for animals or for the law, should not be allowed to keep exotic animals in Pahrump. Please deny this permit.

Thank you for your attention to this urgent message.

OC Animal Care Director Departing Amid Questions About Agency

County Shelter Faces $2.5 Million Animal Abuse Suit

BACKGROUND | SOURCE EXAMINER
BY PENNY EIMS

Sharon Logan, of Paw Protectors Rescue, has been a long-time rescuer of animals from the OC Animal Shelter in Orange, Calif.

Recently, however, that all changed following Logan expressing concern over the treatment of a surrendered dog, and what appears to be retaliation on the part of the animal shelter facility.

It all began on July 27 – the day that Logan witnessed a heartbreaking scene at the facility. On that day, Logan was at the facility to pull a dog for her rescue.

While there, she claims to have overheard a woman laughing and joking about a dog who she was surrendering. The woman allegedly was laughing as she told a friend that the dog was “(expletive) dumb,” and that she should abandon him in the parking lot.

Unfortunately for the dog, it is not the same story that she provided to the shelter staff.

The woman told the shelter employees that the dog was “aggressive,” and that he needed to be euthanized.

Later, Logan’s heart broke as she saw the “wheel or box of death” brought out to the parking lot. This “box” is for dogs who are to be destroyed.

The frightened dog seemed to know his fate as he bucked away from the contraption and attempted to keep his freedom. Logan captured part of the gut-wrenching scene on video.

The supposedly “aggressive” dog was clearly frightened, yet his tail continues to wag.

The “aggressive” dog never lashes out at anyone or anything – instead, he tries to keep away from the death cage. According to Logan, she witnessed the same dog wait for thirty minutes as the surrender paperwork was completed.

According to Logan, the dog never reacted to anyone or anything.

Haunted by the scene she had witnessed and perplexed as to why and how a young, healthy dog would be placed in the “death cage,” Logan contacted the shelter to see about the dog’s status.

She was told by the adoption coordinator that:

The dog you observed was being brought in by his owner to be euthanized. He had a history of aggressive behavior towards animals and humans. In this type of case the dog is immediately euthanized.

Logan immediately responded to the email asking if the shelter bothered to do a temperament test or otherwise evaluate the doomed dog – or, did they simply take the word of the woman who no longer wanted him.

Two days later, she received notice that she had “violated” shelter terms and that she would no longer be able to pull animals from the shelter for rescue; she could, however, still make a public adoption.

A portion of the correspondence received from Katie Ingram follows:

OC Animal Care is an open-admission shelter. When an owner makes
the difficult decision to surrender their animal, we will respect their wishes.
Adoption Partners should never interfere with this process. Due to the sensitive
nature of these situations, please ensure that you and others from your group
adhere to this policy.”

“I will assure that all representatives of the organization will not interfere with
shelter operations when visiting OC Animal Care.”

According to your Adoption Partner file, you were the representative that
signed the Adoption Partner Manual Agreement and the 2012 Adoption Partner
Application. Through your signature on these documents, you acknowledged
that you would adhere to all guidelines, including the previously noted
guidelines regarding owner surrenders.

After viewing both of the videos posted on You Tube, it is clear that your
actions are in violation of OC Animal Care’s Adoption Partner guidelines.

Sharon Logan was stunned and appalled and she immediately contacted her lawyer.

Though Ingram states that Logan “interfered” with the woman who was surrendering the dog, she did nothing more than capture video images – at no time did she interfere with the shelter’s operations.

Signage around the shelter facility does not indicate that photos and/or video images are prohibited.

Finally, the OC Animal Shelter appears to have violated the law with the immediate killing of the healthy, young dog.

According to Section 31754 of the Food and Agricultural code:

mandates that animals relinquished by their PURPORTED owners are to be held the same period as strays and provided the same vet care and treatment.

There is an exception to the hold time “if” aggressive behavior has been documented.

In other words, in writing, there must be evidence of documented aggression by the agency responsible for enforcing shelter animal laws.

The obvious reason for this is to prevent people from contriving stories to get rid of an animal which they no longer want.

Sharon Logan’s attorney has stated that the actions of the OC Animal Shelter appear to be both “retaliatory and punitive,” in nature.

At the very least, if they were unhappy with her 1) questioning the killing of the dog, and 2) videotaping the surrender – they should have given her written warning of their concerns.

I emailed the adoption coordinator on Thursday addressing these concerns and asking for a statement. As this article was being written, Katie Ingram responded to my inquiry.

Ingram stated that the shelter killed the dog based on a statement from the owner. She wrote:

Upon surrender, the owner notified our staff that the dog had a history of aggression with both people and animals. This information was documented on his file.

Ingram also stated that Logan was barred from the adoption partner program because she engaged the woman who surrendered the dog.

Logan informed me that, after the dog’s surrender was complete, she was angry and yelled to the woman that she had “sentenced her dog to death.”

While Logan’s statement to the woman may not have been the “right” thing to do, it is doubtful that, post surrender, it “interfered” with the operations of the facility.

A healthy, adult dog lost his life on July 27. The woman who surrendered him, for all intents and purposes, killed him outright with her words.

According to the information provided, the shelter facility did not evaluate the dog for signs of aggression.

From all appearances, they took the word of the woman who did not want the “dumb” dog anymore.

Sharon Logan is no longer an adoption partner at this facility. She captured a disturbing scene on video and voiced her concerns – now she can no longer help those in need.

According to Ingram, Logan’s drop from the adoption partner program is because of the following:

Whether we agree with the decision of an owner or not, we cannot authorize this behavior from our “partners” in these types of situations.

Logan intends to pursue legal action with her lawyer over this situation.

SAMPLE LETTER

Dear Mr. Drabek, Ms. Osborn, and Ms. Ingram:

I am writing today on behalf of the dog who was innocently killed absent any legitimate assessment, resulting in the wrongful death of a dog and the dismissal of a responsible caretaker from the adoption partner program, Sharon Logan.

With respect to the owner, the woman’s words were not an accurate or reliable portrayal of the dog; indeed, it only served to victimize an innocent dog while neglecting to address those culpable: people who intentionally neglect their dogs or those who deliberately portray them as aggressive with violent behaviors relying only on words versus an accurate and complete assessment. Killing the dog absent a reliable assessment only propagates fear and irrational approaches to valid concerns. When you become immune to legitimate problems by unreasonably focusing on their owners description, the problem only escalates, allowing deviant human behaviours to flourish; when people start questioning the absence of enforcement and solution, you will determine that ignoring protocol is a fallible approach to controlling or preventing dog attacks.

For future situations, I appeal to you to allow the life of dogs, giving them time to acclimate and familiarize themselves with their surroundings. Even those dogs targeted as “dangerous” deserve time with a responsible caretaker. All dogs deserve life.

Thank you for taking the time to read this urgent appeal.

URGENT: Pipes RAMMED Down Birds’ Throats!

August 9, 2012
by

Please click HERE to sign automatic letter

Background | Source PETA

Workers on foie gras farms shove tubes down birds’ throats and pump multiple pounds of fat and grain into the birds’ stomachs every day. This causes the birds’ livers to become painfully diseased and to swell to up to 10 times their normal size. In some cases, the birds’ organs rupture.

Investigations at foie gras farms across the U.S. and Europe have revealed sick, dying, and dead animals—some with holes in their necks from injuries sustained during force-feeding. Those who survive the force-feeding are violently killed, and their bloated livers are sold to consumers as foie gras.

California banned the sale of foie gras, but one restaurant is still trying to profit off of this cruelty and has even persuaded the clothing company Orisue to sponsor an event this Saturday. Contestants at the Playground restaurant will compete by shoving foie gras-topped hamburgers, called “Shut the Duck Up Burgers,” into their mouths in an eating contest.

Urge Orisue NOT to sponsor this heartless and illegal event immediately.

Petition Text

I am writing to respectfully urge you to withdraw Orisue’s sponsorship of the August 11 event at the Playground restaurant, in which the diseased livers of painfully force-fed birds will be served as part of a public spectacle, glorifying animal abuse. Investigations at foie gras farms across the U.S. and Europe have revealed sick, dying, and dead animals–some with holes in their necks from injuries sustained during force-feeding.

Not only is foie gras cruelly produced, it is also illegal in California. To promote foie gras in California is to thumb your nose at an animal protection law passed by the representatives of the citizens of California.

Ask Airline to Stop Shipping Monkeys to Be Tortured

August 9, 2012

PETA

BACKGROUND | SOURCE PETA

Air France claims to be making the sky “the best place on Earth.” However, Air France continues to ship monkeys to laboratories, making the sky a terrifying place for animals.

These monkeys spend their time in the sky crammed into tiny wooden crates—often in the dark cargo holds just underneath unsuspecting Air France passengers—before they arrive at notorious laboratories such as Shin Nippon Biomedical Laboratories (SNBL) and Covance, where they will be tormented and killed in cruel experiments.

Partly because of PETA’s successful campaigns, almost all other airlines—including Air China, British Airways, Delta Air Lines, and American Airlines—now refuse to transport monkeys to laboratories.

With your support, we can help save monkeys from this cruel fate. Thank you!

Dear Air France,

I was shocked to learn that your airline is involved in the transportation of monkeys to laboratories. It is unacceptable that these sensitive animals, ripped from their families and homes, are then subjected to the stress of being packed into small crates and shipped as cargo on your airline to end up in laboratories where they will suffer in experiments.

I urge you to join the increasing number of airlines that have made the decision to stop their involvement in this cruelty. Until you do, I will not be flying with your airline.

Chef’s Wildlife Bloodbath Isn’t an Exciting ‘Experience’: Send letter

UPDATE | SOURCE BORN FREE

Last week when we learned a restaurant in Wichita, KS, was planning to serve lion meat, we asked you to express spirited opposition. The resulting barrage of e-mails, calls and media interviews were persuasive enough to chef Jason Febres that two days before the $160-per-plate meal (which he had absurdly dubbed “the ultimate dining experience”) he removed African lions from the menu. A big thanks to all those of you who gave Febres a piece of your compassionate mind! We hope this incident will help raise awareness about the special challenges lions face in their struggle to remain a viable presence in the wild.

BACKGROUND | SOURCE BORN FREE

Dear Friend,

There’s offensive, there’s really offensive, and then there’s what is happening next Tuesday in Wichita, KS.

Jason Febres, who in a case of profoundly insensitive delusion calls it “the Ultimate Dining Experience event of the year,” is going to slice and dice exotic animals from around the world and pretend the meal he’s creating is something chic and wonderful. As bad as it is that he is cooking bits and pieces of African lion and other species usually spared from North American dinner plates (alpaca, antelope, crocodile, hare, kangaroo and water buffalo), what might be worse is that enough people have agreed to pay $160 for the “experience” that it is sold out.

How absolutely nauseating.

Please join us in condemning this kitchen calamity by letting the host restaurant, Taste & See, know that it should be ashamed of itself, its executive chef and his coming abomination. Make your e-mail as passionate and condemning as you can! (Without profanities or personal insults, of course!) You also can vent by calling the restaurant at (316) 771-7393.

At Born Free USA, we know a lot about the lion meat industry, and as we showed last year in our undercover investigation, it’s all bad. Everything about it stinks.

So does Febres’ “ultimate dining experience.” Please let him know how you feel — and don’t hold back!

SAMPLE LETTER, COURTESY CHANGE.ORG, BORN FREE

Dear Taste and See,

I recently read that you are planning on serving African lion meat as well as alpaca, antelope, crocodile, hare, kangaroo, and water buffalo during your Ultimate Dining Experience event. I am respectfully requesting your cease this vile event due to the suffering and inhumane conditions inherent. For example, while you may think that farm-raised lions do not impact the animals in the wild, that is untrue. Farmed wildlife creates a demand for products, like lion meat, that makes it easier for poachers to get their products on the market.

Born Free USA’s investigation of the lion meat trade shines a bright light on this shady, under-regulated business that places both people and animals at risk. Consumers, restaurant owners and policy-makers are all equally responsible for putting a stop to this risky business by refusing to buy or sell lion meat and by pushing for and passing stronger regulations and prohibitions on the possession, slaughter, and sale of lions in the United States.

There is no need to serve any type of meat when there are so many other options available that are more humane and do not pose a threat to wildlife (such as multiple fantastic vegan dishes).

I urge you to immediately remove meat from your Ultimate Dining Experience event and support sustainable, humane dining instead.

Thank you.

Source Veganism is the Future

Vegan American Gary Yourofsky has done more for the vegan movement in Israel during this past year than a decade of Animal Rights work. His speech created thousands of “Gary-babies” – people who watched his speech and couldn’t go back to eating animals and their products. Behind the Israeli campaign there are two amazing people who run ‘Animal Log’ – http://www.animal-tv.org/ and invest much of their time in bringing Yourofsky’s video to the public. They run outstanding virtual campaigns on Facebook and around the net, PPC campaigns, print materiel and special cooperations such as printing a QR code on tofu packages, linking to the Israeli Yourofsky site. The numbers are unbelievable: With over 300,000 views, it is the most viewed YouTube speech in Israel. Ever. There are almost 12,000 fans on the Israeli campaign FB page. If you consider the size of the population, it is a very high figure. The speech is truly life-changing, but it reached such high numbers thanks to the work of Animal Log. If you check the Google searches for the word “veganism” (in Hebrew) there was a giant leap after the subtitled speech aired back in April 2011.

Watch how the unprecedented vegan trend in Israel reaches prime-time television, all due to Gary Yourofsky’s riveting speech, with an extensive 10 minute news item on Israel’s most watched network.

Urge Bayer Properties to End Sale of Sugar Gliders

August 3, 2012
by

BACKGROUND

Bayer Properties continues to host Pocket Pets—a traveling kiosk that sells tiny, exotic marsupials called sugar gliders—at its malls. PETA has reached out to executives, but to no avail. We need your help today!

Sugar gliders are tiny nocturnal marsupials who, in nature, live in groups of 30. They spend their time in trees searching for insects and sap and frolicking with their family. Kiosks and pet shops are now acquiring them from hellish breeding facilities similar to puppy mills. They are then peddled as cheap trinkets to customers who purchase them on a whim. Confined to small cages, overly and roughly handled, fed improper diets, and forgotten when the novelty wears off, sugar gliders are doomed from the moment that they’re born into the pet trade.

Please implore Bayer Properties to do the right thing and adopt a policy that prohibits the sale of sugar gliders at its malls. Then forward this alert widely!

SAMPLE LETTER

Dear CEO Bayer and Executive Vice President Lassiter,

It has come to my attention that you are selling sugar gliders as toy trinkets called Pocket Pets, and I am respectfully requesting you discontinue.

Please allow me to elaborate. These sugar gliders are bred in wretched conditions with high death rates, captive by breeders whose only concern is profit, making ideal food and veterinary care cost-prohibitive.  Sugar gliders are naturally nocturnal, live in groups of 30, and spend their time searching for insects and frolicking with family members.   Furthermore, sugar gliders indeed experience pain and react negatively towards stressful situations including loud noises, light, enclosures, and disturbed environments, the factors of both breeding and selling capacities.

As such, as long as you continue to host Pocket Pets, thereby unnecessarily and selfishly capitalizing on the cruelty and death of animals, I will not financially support you; furthermore, I will promote a boycott by informing family, friends, and members of online communities.

Please make both the ethical and financially-responsible decision to discontinue animal cruelty immediately: join an increasing body of corporations who are listening to a concerned and attentive consumer population who refuse to be complicit in the inherently malicious industries of animal breeding and selling.

Thank you for taking the time to read this important appeal.

Phoenix Air Group was recently contracted by Novartis to transport a group of non-human primates from Barbados to Italy. The animals were destined for laboratory experimentation.

Novartis is trying to get monkeys in the next days and taking them abroad in Italy through vans. Italian airports are now considered dangerous for their image. We must act now!

The final destination of these animals is the Novartis Vaccines & Diagnostics Ltd, a company based in Siena, Via Fiorentina, 1.

It ‘s the second time this year that Novartis cancelled an order of primates for experimentation. The first time it happened in March, close to the HARLAN scandal. That time was enough that the news leaked out and become public domain. It was a clear sign, that which the vivisectors like working in the shadows and no one knows what they do to animals, where prisoners are kept, where and when they come.

In Barbados and the neighboring islands of Nevis & StKitts, monkeys are yellow-hunted because they are considered harmful to crops and sent by some companies to laboratories. Doing this, however, is become increasingly difficult since airlines such as Amerijet, Caribbean Airlines, Choice Airways, Monarch Air and others have ceased to transport primates for vivisection from the islands of the Caribbean. The only way that vivisectors have to bring these animals to their death is to hire charter flights, such as Phoenix Air.

This moment is so important to give a signal and also to ask Phoenix Air to halt the loading and transport of animals for
vivisection.

SAMPLE LETTER

Dear Mr. Thompson,

It is my understanding that Phoenix Air Group was recently contracted by Novartis to transport a group of non-human primates from Barbados to Italy. The animals were destined for laboratory experimentation. I urge you to dissociate Phoenix Air Group from the cruelty and suffering of the international trade in primates by refusing to transport primates destined for the research industry.

Each year, on the islands of Barbados and St. Kitts & Nevis, hundreds of green/vervet monkeys are torn from their families and forest homes and either exported directly for biomedical research or imprisoned on farms to produce offspring to be exported to laboratories around the world. Once wild and free, these sensitive and intelligent animals end their lives in laboratories where pain and suffering are routine.

There are an increasing number of airlines that were once carriers of primates, but which now refuse to transport primates for the research industry. Airlines that have made this compassionate decision include leading cargo airlines such as Lufthansa Cargo, Cargolux and DHL Aviation, as well as the major airlines American Airlines, Delta Airlines, United Airlines, US Airways, British Airways, Korean Air and Caribbean Airlines.

Thank you for taking the time to consider this important appeal.

SAMPLE LETTER IN FRENCH

Dear Mr President and Officials,

Sincerely,

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

Dear Mr President and Officials,

The foie gras is produced by force feeding ducks or geese, confined, using massive amounts of food, via mechanized pump several times a day for three weeks. At the end of the fattening period, the livers of birds are inflated up to ten times their natural size.

The birds are then slaughtered and their livers are sold as “fatty liver”.  These conditions are conducive to considerable accidents, and the mortality rate of animals in foie gras production far exceeds that of other industries. Birds die when the tears in metal supply tube open their throats. Many birds die of internal organ injury or asphyxia when food becomes broken down in their throats and digestive tracts. Many are physically debilitated and in so much pain towards the end of forced feeding period they cannot stand or walk.

The ban in California and the country’s 17 banned productions prove that people are aware of this cruelty, and that their rights of free trade or not, do not want your foie gras.

Sincerely,
