What is the difference between No Welfare, High Welfare, and Highest Welfare when they all require animals to die? Only human comfort, NONE protect the actual animals. The most humane, ethical, and honest Webster-defined "welfare" is NOT exploiting animals - not using, not wearing, not eating, not killing - animals. The only meaningful position is vegan, everything else is just how humans euphemize animals' required suffering and violent deaths: no human exploits animals because they honestly believe that NOT exploiting animals is UNethical or INhumane.
Meet the mother of a pet store puppy

Source LOTL Rescue
My name is 109. I have lived in a puppy mill for 6.5 years. I have had 11 litters of puppies and made my owner over $30,000.
To show his gratitude, he has never bathed or brushed me….he has never placed a kind hand on me. I have never seen a vet or felt grass under my feet.
The only time I am out of my 2×3 crate is when I am bred by force. I get a little more food and a cleaner pen when I have my babies. I am happy for awhile, but by 4 weeks they take my pups away to sell them online and at pet stores and I am alone again back in my crate.
The wire floor in my crate has caused me to have permanent deep painful groves in my pads. My nails are so long I can’t walk on a hard surface.
Today, we were rescued. I am so scared, but I experienced something I have never heard before…..a soft, gentle voice.
Please share to help spread the word & raise awareness about puppy mills!

Protect Island Animals from Rat Poison

Background Source Care2
The Farallon Islands, a group of islands off the coast of San Francisco, is home to a huge variety of seabirds, seals, whales and sharks. They’re also one of the only breeding sites for the ashy storm-petrel, an small, increasingly endangered bird that depends on the islands for survival.
Unfortunately, the islands are also overrun with house mice. Though the mice mostly eat crickets and salamanders, their main danger is attracting burrowing owls to the Farallons. When those owls run out of mice to eat, they turn to the islands’ native species — including the storm-petrels.
To save the storm-petrels, the US Fish and Wildlife Services plans to bomb the islands with rat poison pellets. But the poison won’t just wipe out the mice; it will also put the islands’ diverse native species in grave danger, particularly the endangered black abalone that live in the shallow waters nearby.
Though it’s certainly important to protect storm-petrels, it shouldn’t come at the cost of other wildlife. Tell the US Fish and Wildlife Services to come up with an alternate solution to save the islands’ ecosystems.

New Jersey Man Exonerated After Serving 19 Years for a Murder that New DNA Evidence Shows He Didn’t Commit

Somerset County Prosecutor Dismisses Indictment Against Gerard Richardson

(SOMERVILLE, NJ – December 17, 2013) — Somerset County Prosecutor Geoffrey Soriano filed a motion today dismissing the indictment against Gerard Richardson, fully exonerating him of a murder for which he served 19 years. Richardson’s exoneration comes nearly two months after Somerset County Superior Court Judge Julie M. Marino overturned the conviction and ordered his release from prison.
“Gerard Richardson has spent nearly two decades working to prove his innocence and waiting for the system to acknowledge the injustice done to him. Today’s hearing – when the State officially ended the case – marks a monumental moment.” said Vanessa Potkin, a Senior Staff Attorney with the Innocence Project, which is affiliated with Cardozo School of Law. “Now Mr. Richardson will be able to celebrate the holidays with his family as a free man.”
Richardson was convicted of the February 1994 murder of Monica Reyes based largely on the testimony of a forensic dentist who claimed that a bite mark on the victim’s body matched to Richardson. The only other evidence presented against Richardson at trial was the testimony of Reyes’ boyfriend who claimed that Richardson threatened to kill her because she owed him money for selling drugs. Richardson became a suspect after law enforcement learned that Reyes, who was addicted to heroin, had sold drugs for him on a few occasions to support her habit and owed him approximately $90. Although the boyfriend had spoken to police several times previously, he only recalled the threat after police told him about the bite mark match.
Richardson always maintained his innocence of the murder. He was eventually granted the right to submit a swab recovered from the bite mark to DNA testing, but earlier rounds of testing were inconclusive. His attorneys eventually sought help from the Innocence Project, which took over his representation. The remaining evidence was submitted once again for testing, and the lab was able to detect a complete male DNA profile from the evidence that excluded Richardson.
Based on this new evidence, the Innocence Project filed a motion seeking to overturn Richardson’s conviction. After Somerset County Prosecutor Soriano conceded that the new evidence entitled him to a new trial, Judge Marino granted Richardson’s motion on October 28 and set bail at $5,000, which he posted the following day. Today the indictment was dismissed.
Because of FBI regulations, officials in New Jersey have been barred from entering the DNA profile from the bite mark into the CODIS DNA database, which contains over ten million profiles of convicted offenders and could identify the person responsible for the 1994 murder. The true perpetrators have been identified in nearly half of the 311 DNA exonerations.
“It’s very disturbing that what is essentially a bureaucratic rule is preventing the state from identifying the real perpetrator of this crime who could be at large committing other crimes,” said Barry Scheck, Co-Director of the Innocence Project. “We intend to take this up with the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office. For the sake of the many victims in this case, we urge state law makers to amend the law to end unnecessary hurdles to accessing the database.”
Mr. Richardson was in court with his brother and sister today when the indictment was officially dismissed. He is represented by Potkin and Scheck of the Innocence Project.

Permit to hunt black rhino in Namibia sells for $350,000
Please note that there are no petitions to sign or letters to send. This hunt will go on. The only thing you can do to protest this atrocity is to go vegan: be a friend to all animals and refuse to use them in any manner. If everyone were vegan, hunting would be a relic.
Source Dallas News
A permit to hunt an endangered African black rhino has sold for $350,000 at a closely watched auction that’s been criticized by wildlife and animal rights groups.
The Dallas Safari Club and the African nation of Namibia auctioned the permit Saturday to raise money for efforts to protect the black rhino.
Safari Club spokesman Steve Wagner confirmed the sale of the permit at the closed-door event. He declined to name the buyer.
The auction has drawn howls from critics, including wildlife and animal rights groups, and the FBI last week said it was investigating death threats against members of the club.
Ben Carter, executive director of the Safari Club, defended the auction. He said all money raised will go toward rhino conservation efforts. He also said the rhino that the winner will hunt is old, male and non-breeding — and that the animal was likely to be targeted for removal anyway because it was becoming aggressive and threatening other wildlife.
Carter added that wildlife experts say culling a herd is an acceptable habitat management practice.
“In most cases, this animal is detrimental,” Carter said. “He’s past his prime.”
But critics have questioned that logic. Officials from the Humane Society and the International Fund for Animal Welfare have said that while culling can be appropriate in abundant animal populations, all black rhinos should be protected, given their endangered status.
An estimated 4,000 black rhinos remain in the wild, down from 70,000 in the 1960s. Nearly 1,800 are in Namibia, according to the safari club.
Critics have also said any hunting of a rhino sends a bad message to the public.
“This auction is telling the world that an American will pay anything to kill their species,” Jeffrey Flocken, North American regional director of the Massachusetts-based IFAW, said earlier this week. “This is, in fact, making a spectacle of killing an endangered species.”
The auction took place Saturday night in downtown Dallas under tight security and behind closed doors. Organizers got their wish to at least break the previous high bid for one of the permits in Namibia, which is $223,000. The nation offers five permits a year, and the one auctioned Saturday was the first to be made available for purchase outside of Namibia.
The winning bidder could have come from anywhere in the world, and at least some bidders were expected to enter by phone.
About 40 protesters gathered early Saturday evening outside the convention center where the auction and a pre-auction dinner took place. They held signs and chanted. Most dispersed by just after 6 p.m.
Jim and Lauren Ries traveled with their children from Atlanta to protest the auction of the rare black rhino hunting permit in Dallas. Jim Ries said it was his son Carter, 12, and daughter Olivia, 11, who pushed for them to go and participate.
“We heard what the Dallas Safari Club was doing, and we thought it was just wrong that they were auctioning off to kill a black rhino, and we really got upset that they were thinking this,” Carter Ries said.
Jim Ries said his children are passionate about animal conservation and were working to help adopt cheetahs in Africa. The family started a nonprofit called One More Generation, dedicated to saving endangered species.
“There’s less than 5,000 black rhinos left on the planet,” the father said, “and if our kids ever want to see a rhino left in the wild, we can’t be pulling the trigger on every one we say is too old to breed.”
Safari Club director Carter said he and club members were deluged in the days before the auction by angry messages, including the death threats.
“It appears to be an orchestrated series from people who are strongly anti-hunting,” Carter said.
Poachers long have targeted all species of rhino, primarily for its horn, which is valuable on the international black market. Made of the protein keratin, the chief component in fingernails and hooves, the horn has been used in carvings and for medicinal purposes, mostly in Asia. The near-extinction of the species also has been attributed to habitat loss.

EMERGENCY PROTEST RALLY SUNDAY
PLEASE JOIN US for an EMERGENCY
PROTEST RALLY to
SAVE the DEER who live in
ROCK CREEK NATIONAL PARK
this SUNDAY, JAN. 12 at 12 noon through the evening hours.
We will gather at the “Rock Creek Park” sign located in a triangle of grass at the corner of Military Road, NW, where it intersects with Oregon Ave. and Glover Rd., NW.This is the same location where the series of protests were held last March.
(Plans for a protest motorcade are currently being explored but this form of protest cannot be undertaken quickly in the District of Columbia. Legal review is necessary and permits may have to be obtained.)
In the meantime, WE MUST ACT NOW to PROTEST WHILE THE KILLING IS GOING ON!
Please pass the word!
This year, the National Park Service began shooting the deer who live in the Park on Jan. 6 and have continued to shoot on subsequent nights since. So far, at least 21 deer have been killed in at least two nights of shooting in bitter cold temperatures.
The Park Service’s announced goal is to kill 106 deer — almost half of the deer still remaining in the Park — between now and March 31.
Initially, there were approximately 314 deer living in Rock Creek National Park; the population had been stable for years. In March 2013, the NPS gunned down 20 heavily pregnant does. It was the first time in the 124-year history of Rock Creek Park that the Park Service began destroying the animals it is charged with protecting.
A total of 41 animals have so far been destroyed under the Park Service’s new policy.
Since Jan. 6, the NPS has set up unannounced road blocks at some roads leading into the Park and manning them with Park Rangers and U.S. Park Police. Hired guns from the USDA’s notorious Wildlife Services Department have been baiting the deer with food and then shooting them at night using infrared equipment.
The killings that we are aware of so far have centered on an area between Oregon Ave., and 16th St., NW, in the vicinity of Beach Drive north of Broad Branch Rd., Ross Drive, Wise Rd.,

Tell the Icelandic government to ban whaling

Karen Lyons Kalmenson

By Don Lichterman
Sadly our planet’s whales face more threats today than ever before, including the cruelty of commercial whaling. There is no humane way to kill a whale and little market for whale meat. Despite this, the Icelandic government issued new quotas for hundreds of minke whales and endangered fin whales to be harpooned annually for the next five years.
Can you take a moment to help protect whales?
I’m sure you agree that commercial whaling has no place in the 21st century. Responsible whale watching is a cruelty-free and profitable alternative to the cruelty of whaling.
Please send a message to the Icelandic Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture asking him to cancel these quotas immediately and call an end to whaling in Iceland once and for all.
Because we know that you care about future generations of whales, we have worked alongside Icelandic whale watch operators for many years to promote responsible whale watching. Iceland is one of Europe’s top destinations for whale watching and last year attracted 175,000 whale watchers.
By contrast, recent Gallup polling, that we commissioned, found just 3 percent of Icelanders have bought whale meat six times or more in the last 12 months. The survey also revealed 75 percent of Icelanders never buy the meat, with women and young adults even less likely to buy whale meat.
Whaling damages Iceland’s reputation, attracting criticism at home and abroad. In summer 2013, both ports and carriers in Europe publicly rejected the whale meat trade when containers opened at ports in Rotterdam and Hamburg were returned to Iceland and met with public protests at the killing of whales for products such as dog food.
Despite this, the latest whaling quotas allow 229 minke whales and 154 fin whales to be slaughtered every year for five years.
Please join me in calling on the Icelandic government to stop supporting the efforts of Iceland’s whaling crusader, businessman Kristjan Loftsson, and a few others, and instead halt this cruel, outdated and uneconomic practice.
Thank you for your support for whales.

Background, Source Animals Australia
What if a judge handed down a verdict without viewing all the evidence?
Right now, many politicians are doing just that — deciding the fate of millions of animals while turning a blind eye to the cruelty that may await them in the live export trade. We urgently need your help to get this new evidence in their hands.
Live export is once again making headlines across the country for all the wrong reasons… We have uncovered harrowing footage — posted on YouTube — showing Australian animals being tortured and killed during the Festival of Sacrifice in the Gaza Strip. When we alerted media, the live export industry swung back into damage control.
As an investigator, I’ve witnessed more cruelty than I care to admit — but ‘Gaza’ is the worst I have ever seen. Dozens of Australian bulls were terrorised and traumatised. One poor animal bellowed in pain as they stabbed a knife into his eye to pin him down; another was ‘knee capped’ three times with an assault rifle. Other stories are too distressing to even describe.
You do not need to watch this footage. In fact, I’d strongly recommend you don’t. But every federal politician who supports live export or who simply repeats the party line needs to see what these animals endured — because this evidence is so damning and because they have the power to help stop this shocking abuse.
Many politicians have supported live export on the condition that animals are treated ‘humanely’. But how can they determine this without first viewing the evidence? With your help we’ll make sure they watch it.
We’ve gone to extra lengths to prepare a special package for politicians. And we’ve made it easy for you to send this onto your MP without needing to view any of it yourself. Help us ensure no federal MP can support live export without bearing witness to the suffering of its victims. Please help us get justice for animals who deserved better.

On 09/28/2013 Spike and Oli were involved in an incident with their neighbor’s Jack Russel Terrier, Zoey. There was a piece of the privacy fence on the property that was missing, and the owner of Zoey claims that Spike and/or Oli pulled Zoey through the fence and attacked their dog. They did not want damages paid/they did not want restitution at all…. They wanted BLOOD… The blood of these two family pets, who are now deemed dangerous in NJ and set to die in 20 days. The court has ordered that in order for the family to get their pets back they must pay $150.00 for each dog to register them dangerous (and have them tattooed), obtain a $1 Million dollar insurance property on each dog, and have the dogs kenneled at all times outside. The family is in need of assistance in order to obtain these items or to battle this matter further. THESE ARE FAMILY DOGS AND DO NOT DESERVE TO DIE.
As seen in the pictures, Spike & Oli are raised with children, birds, cats, and Yorkshire terriers. DANGEROUS? They were doing as any animal would do and protecting their property when another animal entered it (regardless of the hearsay that the dog was pulled through the fence).. NO ONE SAW HOW THE JACK RUSSEL GOT ONTO THE PROPERTY!

Big Oil is trying to bring tar sands into the United States by pumping up to 300,000 barrels per day of dirty tar sands oil through important moose habitat in New England.
If their dangerous plan is not stopped, toxic tar sands oil would threaten the waterways where moose live–and would fuel more tar sands operations in Canada that are destroying the boreal forests and polluting fresh water.
The U.S. State Department needs to hear from you that the tar sands pipeline poses unacceptable risks to important habitat for moose and many more wildlife along its route.
Take Action! Help protect moose by editing and sending a message to the U.S. State Department, urging them to stop the Northeast tar sands pipeline.

Down feathers are sometimes cruelly and painfully plucked from live birds. But consumers and most retailers don’t know which products contain this live-plucked down.
Peta and Four Paws have obtained undercover video footage of workers pulling fistfuls of feathers from geese as the ravished birds shriek with pain. During the torture the geese are often squeezed between pluckers’ knees or sometimes have their necks sat upon. The traumatized, suffering birds are often left with gaping wounds, which many don’t survive.
But the horror doesn’t always end after this torment, because many of these tortured birds are further victimized by the foie gras market, and then some go on to be slaughtered or dumped into scalding water – also while still alive.
Most upsetting is that none of this cruelty is necessary. Imitation materials that mimic down are warmer and washable and now available, and outdoor gear company Coleman says it has already made the switch.
Tell The North Face, Patagonia and Rab to do the same and stop supporting this cruelty. Stop using down insulation now!

Stop the Contracted Killing of Wolves in Idaho

The U.S Forest Service (USFS) has ignored their own wilderness management policy and allowed the Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG) to send a trapper out to exterminate two wolf packs deep within the vast Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness.
The future of wolves in Idaho is grim if we don’t act against their brutal anti-wolf agenda. There isn’t any time to lose – as you read this, the state’s hit man is out laying his traps which by Idaho law can be left unchecked for up to 72 hours – leaving anything caught to bleed to death or succumb to exposure while waiting to be shot by the returning trapper.
Tell the USFS that their reckless decision to allow entire wolf packs to be exterminated in a protected wilderness area is unconscionable.

Please Urge Long Island to Halt Deer Massacre

PETA
Click HERE to sign and send petition
According to news sources, the Long Island Farm Bureau intends to contract with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Wildlife Services to kill deer in local municipalities by using sharpshooters or by using netting to catch them so that they can be slaughtered, apparently in hopes of controlling the deer population. Animals who are shot often do not die outright. Wounded deer commonly “disappear,” only to succumb unseen to their injuries or to die from extreme stress or in attacks by other animals. And netting is a terrifying ordeal for these easily frightened prey animals, who thrash frantically when ensnared, often harming themselves in the process, and then endure rough handling before finally being killed.
Deer are beneficial to ecosystems because they distribute key nutrients. Even if population control is insisted upon, there is no need for lethal measures when effective, humane methods exist. Please politely urge the Long Island Farm Bureau to halt this cruel initiative—and then forward this alert widely!

Gap, Zara Continue Selling Angora Products Despite Disturbing Fur Farm Video (UPDATE)

By Hunter Stuart
As several major retailers temporarily ban the sale of Angora products in the wake of an undercover video showing alleged animal abuse at Angora farms in China, major clothing retailers Gap Inc. and Zara are holding out.
Update (Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013 at 10:46 a.m.): Inditex, which owns Zara, released a statement on its website saying it will stop placing orders for Angora fur until it can be verified that its farms are in compliance with company requirements.
Update (Thursday, Dec. 19, 2013 at 12:30 p.m.): Gap Inc. announced via Twitter on Wednesday that it will suspend orders of Angora while it “investigat[es] further.”
Previously reported:
Angora fur, valued for being lightweight, warm and silky to the touch, is plucked or shorn from Angora rabbits about once every three months. The fur can be used to make clothing items like sweaters, scarves and ear muffs. China is responsible for most of the world’s Angora production.
In recent weeks, brands including H&M, Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger made the decision to suspend Angora fur production while they ensure it’s done humanely. H&M even took the step of offering to fully refund customers the cost of Angora products they had already purchased, The Wall Street Journal reported.
Executives at H&M and PVH Corp., which owns Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger, made their decisions after watching an investigative video (below) supposedly filmed at Angora fur farms in China. The footage, which shows rabbits screaming while their hair is torn out by workers, was filmed covertly by animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals at nine unidentified farms in China between June and September. The group then met with H&M and PVH execs to show them the video, PETA spokesperson Shakira Croce told The Huffington Post via email.
It was unclear as of Monday evening whether Gap or Zara execs had seen PETA’s video. Neither company responded to The Huffington Post’s requests for comments about the video and the companies’ Angora products.
As several major retailers temporarily ban the sale of Angora products in the wake of an undercover video showing alleged animal abuse at Angora farms in China, major clothing retailers Gap Inc. and Zara are holding out.
Evidence is mounting that consumers aren’t happy with the two retailers.
A petition led by Washington-based nonprofit SumOfUs.org calls on Zara to stop the sale of items made with Angora fur. As of Monday, the petition had attracted more than 260,000 signatures.
PETA says it reached out to Gap Inc. about its Angora products but notes the company “hasn’t budged.” PETA has also set up an online petition to force the issue.
Gap Inc. operates more than 3,000 locations throughout the United States. Zara, a Spanish clothing maker, is owned by global fashion retail giant Inditex.
Update (Dec. 17, 2013 at 10:07 a.m.): Inditex, which owns Zara, told The Huffington Post via email on Tuesday that after “recent complaints” the company recently “reiterated” its policy of providing decent living conditions for animals to all its Angora suppliers. Those who buy clothing by Inditex “can rest assured that all its garments are manufactured responsibly and ethically,” the company said.

Urge Groupon to End SeaWorld Deals
Please click HERE to take action
Amid the growing backlash facing SeaWorld, the abusement park turned to Groupon in a desperate attempt to increase attendance by slashing ticket prices. Since the release of Blackfish—which led eight musical acts, including Willie Nelson and the Barenaked Ladies, to cancel their SeaWorld concerts—numerous publications, including the Los Angeles Times, have condemned SeaWorld. Unless Groupon wants to be associated with a delusional company that refuses to update its archaic and cruel business model and condemns orcas to small concrete pools for decades, the company needs to terminate this deal immediately.
Twenty–five orcas died in SeaWorld facilities between 1986 and 2010—an average of nearly one each year—and not one died of old age. Celebrities, investors, and other SeaWorld supporters can no longer hide from the facts—SeaWorld is responsible for denying dozens of sentient marine mammals everything that is natural and important to them. Please contact Groupon right away and urge it to cancel this deal.
