HighestWelfare.Humane.Assured.GoodPractices.Vegetarian. Regenerative.Flexitarian.Lies...

What is the difference between No Welfare, High Welfare, and Highest Welfare when they all require animals to die? Only human comfort, NONE protect the actual animals. The most humane, ethical, and honest Webster-defined "welfare" is NOT exploiting animals - not using, not wearing, not eating, not killing - animals. The only meaningful position is vegan, everything else is just how humans euphemize animals' required suffering and violent deaths: no human exploits animals because they honestly believe that NOT exploiting animals is UNethical or INhumane.

PETA wins battle for release of captive elephant Sundar

The Bombay High Court on Monday ordered the immediate transfer of Sundar elephant to a sanctuary in Bangalore and dismissed a politician’s petition seeking setting aside of the government order to the same effect which was passed in 2012. Sundar, the abused elephant’s cause has been taken up by many celebrities like Paul McCartney, Amitabh Bachchan, Madhuri Dixit, Pamela Anderson, Arjun Rampal, R Madhavan, Gulshan Grover.

Sundar is now slated to be transferred to Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre (WRRC) in Bangalore.

The elephant was gifted to the administration of Jyotiba temple.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) had alleged that the tusker was brutalised by the temple authorities, which was in their custody since 2007. In 2012, the state government had issued orders directing for Sundar’s release in a sanctuary. The orders were never implemented.

PETA then approached the Bombay High Court seeking the implementation of government orders. Vinay Kore, the politician who had allegedly gifted the tusker to the temple, moved a petition seeking setting aside of the government order. In the meantime, Sundar was moved to Warana nagar from the premises of Jyotiba temple.

“The elephant’s beatings had been caught on videotape, and veterinarians and elephant experts who examined Sunder found him scarred and wounded and chained so tightly that he couldn’t lie down.

The campaign for his release spanned 21 months as people in India and around the world worked to save him from his abusers. PETA India is now calling on Maharashtra Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) Sarjan Bhagat to implement the court’s order quickly before Sunder can be harmed again,” a press statement by PETA said.

The court on Monday ordered for the immediate enforcement of the government order. The division bench of V M Kanade and A K Menon directed that the transfer should be taken up before the onset of monsoon.

In the past, the court had observed that it was cruel to keep the animal chained. PETA had produced videographic evidence before the court showing the bad condition of the tusker. While the government authorities, in their submissions before the court in the past, had pleaded that Sundar was in musth condition, and therefore could not be moved, PETA had maintained that the tusker was fine, but was being severely tortured.

Background, source Defenders of Wildlife

Less than five years after losing federal protection, it is clearer than ever that Idaho refuses to manage its wolf population responsibly.

That’s why today, Defenders of Wildlife officially requested that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) immediately initiate a status review of wolves in the Northern Rockies and examine the relentless threats that this species has encountered since being stripped of Endangered Species Act protection back in 2011.

The call for this status review is the first step toward restoring Endangered Species Act protection to wolves in Idaho and other Northern Rockies states.

Please, join us in calling on FWS to review the status of Idaho’s persecuted wolf population.

Stop Cornell University’s Violent Deer Killing
In Defense of Animals

For New York’s Cornell University, it is “deer management,” but for the rest of us it is the unnecessary and brutal killing of innocent deer. Cornell University’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has been baiting and luring deer into live-capture clover traps, then using captive-bolt guns, which kill the deer by shooting a metal rod into each of their skulls. Terrified deer have had to endure overnight capture in sub-freezing temperatures before being killed.

Fawns suffocate and die in the womb when their mothers are slaughtered.

Being flight animals, once deer are caught in traps, they often thrash wildly and cry out in fear. Their panicked movements only increase and their cries become even more desperate once their killers arrive. This technique of netting and bolting deer is widely condemned by veterinary experts and humane societies for its egregious cruelty. Faculty and staff of Cornell’s DNR call this barbaric treatment of helpless deer “euthanasia,” a term that actually describes a compassionate choice to end a life of suffering, which has nothing to do with this violent killing of healthy deer.

A Happy Leonard Update

In Defense of AnimalsWe’d like to share a happy update on one of our Hope Animal Sanctuary (HAS) cruelty cases we reported on in January – the rescue of an emaciated and freezing dog suffering with no shelter. Complicating his situation was the refusal by a judge to sign the criminal affidavit and seizure order. A sympathetic circuit court judge finally signed them, and IDA was granted full custody of Leonard.

Leonard is flourishing. He spends his time frolicking, playing, and exploring with other dogs at HAS. He struggles a bit because he will never have the full use of his left rear leg, but he still manages to run up the hills with his pack. He keeps watch as his canine friends swim in the sanctuary ponds. Curiosity and uneasiness still play a small role in his daily activities, but he is stronger, healthier, and happier each day. Your ongoing financial support makes happy stories like this possible. Thank you for caring and helping us saves lives like Leonard’s.

 A Tale of Two Mice

In Defense of AnimalsOn Monday of this week, the IDA main office was abuzz with a rare mouse sighting. A mouse ran out of a staffer’s office and straight into the kitchen. While looking for him, IDA’s Anita Carswell found what she initially believed to be a dead mouse at the bottom of a blue recycling container. This mouse was not the same mouse who had run into the kitchen. This poor mouse had fallen from a trashcan into an empty recycling bin and probably spent all weekend trying to escape. She was likely dehydrated and cold from her long weekend in the container. A house with hay was made for her outside, and she was brought there, with a lid of water and some almonds, but she was unresponsive. Anita picked her up, cupping her in one hand, while setting up a heating pad and blanket with the other hand. Luckily, Melissa Gonzalez, another concerned staffer, had an avocado and protein mix powder, which was donated to the rescue effort as well. By the end of the day, the mouse’s energy was completely restored and when brought outside she practically flew out of the basket completely ignoring the habitat set up for her.

While the second mouse was recovering, the search for the first mouse resumed. He was finally spotted and streaked out the back door and into the evergreens on his own. We’re hopeful these two friends find each other again, and that their encounter with us was enough to make them want to stay outside where they are safer.

SeaWorld Protester Pleads ‘Not Guilty by Reason of Necessity’

She was arrested after blocking SeaWorld’s float at the Rose Parade, but Amanda Slyter pleaded “not guilty” in court today. Why? Because she believes that her actions qualify for protection under a common-law defense called “necessity,” or the “greater good” defense. This means that a person violated a lesser law in order to right a greater wrong—in this case, SeaWorld’s cruel confinement of orcas to tiny concrete tanks.

Outside the courthouse, PETA supporters gathered to back Amanda and to hold signs that read, “SeaWorld Hurts Orcas.”

SeaWorld’s float depicted orcas leaping freely in the sea with their pods—a far cry from reality. The orcas held by SeaWorld are actually confined to glorified bathtubs, where they’re forced to perform confusing tricks for paying customers. Distraught mother orcas even have their babies taken away and shipped to other parks. Standing in a parade route for a few minutes certainly seems to pale in comparison with SeaWorld’s actions.

The court has yet to decide whether Amanda’s necessity defense will render her not guilty,  but PETA will keep our members updated on the case. In the meantime, please keep e-mailing SeaWorld and demanding that the park let the orcas retire to ocean sanctuaries.

The Whales Have Won! — ICJ Rules Japan’s Southern Ocean Whaling ‘Not For Scientific Research’

April 1, 2014
by

Karen Lyons Kalmenson

In a stunning victory for the whales, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague announced their binding decision today in the landmark case of Australia v. Japan, ruling that Japan’s JARPA II whaling program in the Antarctic is not for scientific purposes and ordering that all permits given under JARPA II be revoked. The news was applauded and celebrated by Sea Shepherd Conservation Society USA and Sea Shepherd Australia, both of which have directly intervened against Japanese whalers in the Southern Ocean.

Representing Sea Shepherd in the courtroom to hear the historic verdict were Captain Alex Cornelissen, Executive Director of Sea Shepherd Global and Geert Vons, Director of Sea Shepherd Netherlands. They were accompanied by Sea Shepherd Global’s Dutch legal counsel.

The case against Japan was heard by the ICJ in July of last year to decide whether Japan is in breach of its international obligations in implementing the JARPA II “research” program in the Southern Ocean, and to demand that Japan cease implementation of JARPA II and revoke any related permits until Japan can make assurances that their operations conform with international law.

In a vote of 12 to 4, the ICJ ruled that the scientific permits granted by Japan for its whaling program were not scientific research as defined under International Whaling Commission regulations. It ordered that Japan revoke the scientific permits given under JARPA II and refrain from granting any further permits under that program.

Prior to the verdict, there had been some speculation that the ICJ would not permit the hunting of endangered fin and humpback whales, but it would compromise and allow the hunting of minke whales. However, it has been Sea Shepherd’s contention all along that — no matter the species — no whales should be killed, especially in a sanctuary. Sanctuary means “a place of refuge or safety; a nature reserve” where animals are protected. To allow killing in an internationally designated sanctuary is to make a mockery of international agreements made by those countries who established the sanctuary in 1994. At that time, 23 countries supported the agreement and Japan was the only IWC member to oppose it.

Even the Ambassador from Japan to the U.S., Kenichiro Sasae, during a public meeting in Los Angeles in December 2013 attended by representatives of Sea Shepherd USA, had this to say about whales and whaling: ”As an individual, I like whales and if you go out and see the whales, there is no reason for us to kill this lovely animal. But it’s history and it’s politics, I would say. There are a small number of Japanese people still trying to get this won. But mainstream Japanese are not eating whale anymore.” At the same meeting, Ambassador Sasae stated that Japan will abide by the ICJ ruling.

Sea Shepherd Conservation Society’s international volunteer crew stood on the frontlines in the hostile and remote waters of Antarctica for eight years and then Sea Shepherd Australia took up that gauntlet for the last two years and will keep confronting Japanese whalers in Antarctica until we can once and for all bring an end to the killing in this internationally designated “safety zone” for whales. Over the years, Sea Shepherd has been the only organization to directly intervene against Japan’s illegal commercial whaling conducted under the guise of research, with their claims of research globally questioned. Indeed, Sea Shepherd has been the only thing standing between majestic whales and the whalers’ harpoons, as these internationally protected species — many of them pregnant — migrate through Antarctic waters each year.

“With today’s ruling, the ICJ has taken a fair and just stance on the right side of history by protecting the whales of the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary and the vital marine ecosystem of Antarctica, a decision that impacts the international community and future generations,” said Captain Alex Cornelissen of Sea Shepherd Global.

“Though Japan’s unrelenting harpoons have continued to drive many species of whales toward extinction, Sea Shepherd is hopeful that in the wake of the ICJ’s ruling, it is whaling that will be driven into the pages of the history books,” he said.

“Despite the moratorium on commercial whaling, Japan has continued to claim the lives of thousands of the gentle giants of the sea in a place that should be their safe haven,” said Sea Shepherd Founder, Captain Paul Watson. “Sea Shepherd and I, along with millions of concerned people around the world, certainly hope that Japan will honor this ruling by the international court and leave the whales in peace.”

Sea Shepherd Global will have the ships prepared to return to the Southern Ocean in December 2014 should Japan choose to ignore this ruling. If the Japanese whaling fleet returns, Sea Shepherd crew will be there to uphold this ruling against the pirate whalers of Japan.

Another Pharmaceutical Industry ‘Dirty Little Secret’

SOURCE NEAVS

Many women are shocked to learn their hormone replacement therapy (HRT) medication is made from a pregnant horse’s urine. This is the case for many popular HRT drugs from the pharmaceutical giant Pfizer such as Premarin, Duavee, Prempro, and Premphase – but their labeling isn’t telling you!

These prescriptions are labelled on the bottle simply as “conjugated estrogens,” without identifying the source. Sadly, to collect their estrogen-rich urine, mares are turned into breeding machines for most of their lives. They are confined in tiny stalls without free access to water, and attached to urine collection bags that cause painful chafing. Their newborn foals are typically sent to slaughter or wait their turn to replace their “spent” mothers.

Drugs made from the urine of pregnant horses generate more than $1 billion in sales for Pfizer every year. Please ask Pfizer CEO Ian Read to:

1.Label the ingredients on the bottle of their equine-based HRT drugs as coming from pregnant mare urine

2.End the needless production of PMU drugs and replace them with plant-based or synthetic HRTs

It’s unacceptable for women to not know what they are putting in their bodies, especially because plant-based and synthetic HRTs – with comparable benefits and risks to equine-based drugs – are readily available. It is equally unacceptable that Pfizer continues to market a completely unnecessary product that causes so much suffering and is a waste of animal lives.

Brutal Massacre at Four Paws Dog Shelter, Romania

March 27, 2014
by

Source The Huffington Post
By

On Friday, 21st March 2014, several dog catchers from the Authority for the Supervision and Protection of Animals [ASPA] brutally raided the international animal welfare organisation’s [Four Paws] shelter. Shocking images of the barbaric methods used by dog catchers have been splashed across social media over the weekend causing public uproar, and also leading to the creation of a petition (please note the petition was already closed to me and indicated it was successful) to return the dogs to their shelter. The violent action was directed against the paddocks and the shelter in which the clinic is situated. Around 90 dogs were forcibly removed. According to several eye witnesses, at least four dogs died on the spot because of the aggressive handling.

The dogs under the care of Four Paws were neutered, micro-chipped and registered. Most of them were already adopted and ready to be transported to their new owners.

The action of the ASPA dog catchers who vandalised the shelter and the Vier Pfoten paddocks is told by an eye witness that witnessed the entire operation:

Cornel Constantin said, “At around 14:00, 13 ASPA vans came accompanied by policemen. They broke the lock at the entrance of the shelter and they began to destroy the paddock gates, which were locked. They simply destroyed everything. It’s hard to describe how brutal the methods used to catch the dogs were. I saw with my own eyes at least 2 dead dogs. After I protested, the dog catchers threatened to beat me. Meanwhile, the police looked at / witnessed all of this without doing anything. I told them that what is going on is not normal, that there are dead dogs. They just told me to relax. After they finished vandalising the shelter, they started destroying the 2 kennels of Vier Pfoten, which were next to the clinic. They trampled the gates and destroyed everything. Luckily I managed to get my 5 dogs that were in the shelter, that I squeezed into my own car.”

The defenceless dogs were covered with blood, dragged with clubs and thrown in cramped cages. This was carried out in the presence of the local area police who did nothing. Four Paws said,

“Several dogs were badly injured and some of them died due to violent treatment. The number of the dead dogs is not clear, as we only have statements based on eye witnesses and smartphone quality video footage. At the moment, I think that there are 4 to 6 dead animals, but we will only know for sure after getting the dogs back. The animals choked to death, as catchers intentionally or by their incompetence tightened the lace too much while enforcing the animals. Many dogs, even if they didn’t die, were bleeding through their mouth due to being brutally manipulated . Unconscious (or dead?) animals were enforced together with moving animals in small cages.”

The true horrors meted out on harmless dogs by an organisation that claims to “Protect Animals” were exposed in broad daylight. Moreover. the film taken demonstrates their cruel, unacceptable and unsympathetic handling of defenceless animals that maybe common practice. The dog catchers were behaving more like “hit men” rather than respected members employed by a local authority. The fact that the ASPA is currently being investigated by the Romanian National Anti-Corruption Directorate (DNA) does not go in their favour at all [ Read the details here ] This is not the first time that Four Paws has clashed with the ASPA. In 2013, access to the clinic was blocked without due explanation.

This barbaric raid on Four Paws occurred following the MEP’s damning indictment on the mistreatment of Romanian dogs. In addition, on the 10th March 2013, Four Paws took legal steps at the Court of Appeal in Bucharest for the Romanian Government to freeze the killing of stray dogs. The timing of this raid is, therefore, of interest.

Four Paws added,

“VIER PFOTEN has a legal contract ongoing with the 6th District City Hall for the stray dogs neutering project and for the use of the veterinary clinic. After their raid on Friday, ASPA representatives still forbid access in the facility. The way the City Hall of 6th District broke the Protocol is completely unexplainable, giving the fact that FOUR PAWS invested money from donations, a lot of effort and time in this project, which was requested by the City Hall. FOUR PAWS so far has neutered over 3,000 dogs in the 6th District. We filed a complaint to the police and we will open a legal action against ASPA. The main accusations: killing and cruelty against animals, theft, sequestration of private goods and vandalism.”

More detailed reporting relating to the dispute can be found on Occupy For Animals.

On the 24th March 2014, rescuers arrived at the doorstep of Bragadiru public dog shelter. With ASPA’s reputation firmly in the gutter and no law to justify their barbaric actions, the dogs were given back to the rescuers. In the interim, no apologies have been issued for the death of the harmless, vulnerable animals. Moreover, no investigation into the brutal conduct of the dog catchers has been announced.

Gabriel Paun, Director of Campaigns at FOUR PAWS bravely said,

“The dog catchers killed some, they injured others. We’ll do our best to rescue those who survived the massacre again, and we hope to find loving families for them.”

Undeterred by the current harassment they have been subjected to, Four Paws valiantly issued a petition asking Prime Minister Victor Ponta to squash all the laws that allow the mass killing of dogs.

Original Footage of the Raid on Four Paws

With thanks to Mr BL.

Please Urge Canada to End Its Shameful Seal Slaughter

The end of Canada’s annual baby seal slaughter is near. Over the last few years, all major markets have banned seal-fur imports, including the U.S., the European Union, Mexico, Taiwan, and even Russia, which had been importing 95 percent of Canadian seal pelts. There are no remaining markets for seal fur—the only reason the Canadian government continues to defend this dead industry is because political parties crave Newfoundland’s swing seats in Parliament. But as this editorial shows, even local sentiment is turning, and lack of markets has led Canadian officials to seriously examine whether the slaughter should end.

We’ve reached a tipping point. The time is now to urge Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Gail Shea, Minister of Foreign Affairs John Baird, and Minister of International Trade Ed Fast to help bring the commercial seal slaughter to an immediate end by supporting a government buyout.

Police Officer Responds to ‘Vicious Dog’ Call, Ends Up With New Best Friend

March 24, 2014
by

Officer Waskiewicz and Bo. Photo courtesy of Baltimore Humane Society.

Posted on February 26, 2014 by

When Baltimore Police officer Dan Waskiewicz responded to a ‘vicious dog’ call, what he found instead was a new best friend!

When he arrived on scene, officer Waskiewicz found a frightened, obviously neglected pit bull, being chased by children that were yelling and throwing bottles at him. He called the scared dog over, his tail tucked between his legs and panting heavily, and offered him some water. The so-called ‘vicious dog’ quickly sat down beside him and began licking his pants. Realizing the pit bull was no threat, he put the dog into his squad car – that’s when the real kisses began!

Rather than call animal control, who Waskiewicz feared would euthanize the affectionate dog, he drove him to the local animal shelter himself. During the ride, the pit bull sat beside him, smothering him with kisses before curling up in the seat beside him and taking a nap.

A few days later, the officer, an avid animal lover, returned to the shelter to check on the dog he rescued. Because he had still not been claimed, Officer Waskiewicz adopted the dog himself, named him Bo, and gave him a wonderful forever home with his two other dogs!

Officer Waskiewicz’s kindness earned him a certificate of appreciation from Baltimore Humane Society.

Baltimore Humane Society’s Jen Swanson told CBS DC that far too often, officers respond to these types of calls with violent action. “But when Dan Waskiewicz answered the call he first observed the situation calmly before he acted. We believe he deserves high praise and is truly an asset to the animals and citizens of the city he serves.”

Thank you, Officer Waskiewicz, from the bottom of our hearts to the tips of our tails.

Factory Farming vs. Alternative Farming: The Humane Hoax

March 21, 2014
by

Karen Lyons Kalmenson

Karen Lyons Kalmenson

Source Free From Harm
By Hope Bohanec

“Animal agriculture is a business making money on the bodies of other sentient beings. This can never be free of a fundamental insensitivity towards the victims of the industry’s profits and a deep betrayal to the animals who depend on humans for care. In the same way that one cannot own humans and traffic their bodies for profit in a humane way, it is impossible to humanely profit from the lives and bodies of animals.” — Hope Bohanec, author of The Ultimate Betrayal: Is There Happy Meat?

The Emergence of the Factory Farming “Alternative”

For most of my adult life, I have been engaging in conversations about animals raised and killed for their meat, milk and eggs. These conversations haven’t changed much over the last 25 years. I get the same, tired questions about protein and desert islands and plants feeling pain.

But recently, something has shifted. In the last few years, people have started to say things like, “Oh, but I buy free-range eggs!” or “My meat isn’t from a factory farm, my meat is local.” It’s almost as if all concern about the treatment of animals has been pacified by these new and improved “alternative” animal products. By purchasing these “humane” products people feel absolved from the cruelty inherent in the animal agriculture industry. They feel that there is an alternative now at the farmer’s markets and in the “slow food” movement and if they just pay a little extra money, they can “have their meat and eat it too.” Consumers are being lulled into a complacency where they think the animals are now happy and this new way of farming is actually beneficial to the environment. They have been led to believe that all is well in the mythical world of humane animal agriculture; and that is exactly what the producers of these products want them to believe.

The fact that people are becoming aware of the misery that farmed animals endure, and of the devastating impact of livestock on the planet, is a good thing. A growing number of consumers want to “know where their food comes from” and are willing to pay more money for alternatives to conventional animal products. This is a positive progression away from industrialized food production, so there is a hopeful side to this new industry reaction. However, there is a dark side as well. Is the “Alternative” Encouraging a Return to Meat Eating? The trend is quite popular in my little liberal community of beautiful Sonoma County, California just north of the Golden Gate Bridge. We were lucky enough to have a good size, all vegetarian natural foods store that has been a haven for vegetarians and vegans since the 70’s. It was a joy to shop there and not have to avert your eyes from bloody muscles on display or wince at the pungent odor of dead marine life. Many of us went out of our way and would pass up one or two Whole Foods just to shop there.

Recently, while humming around the store for my organic veggies and vegan ice cream, an enthusiastic employee told me that they were opening a second store. I was thrilled at first, but the excitement soon took an unexpected turn when I learned that there would be a meat counter. How could this be? The 4th word of the Market’s mission statement was “vegetarian”. I learned that because they were able to source “local, humane” meats, and there was such a high demand for these products, they had changed their mission statement and after almost four decades of vegetarianism, had decided to sell meat. The vegetarian community felt completely betrayed.

But we are not the only ones being betrayed. The farmed animals caught in this changing industry are the true victims. It is not the few differences between alternative production and factory farming that matter, but the startling similarities.

What Exactly is The Alternative to Factory Farming?

When we see a product with one of these new labels: humane, free-range, grass-fed, sustainable, etc. there is probably little difference between this operation and a conventional producer. Here’s what may be different. The scale of the operation is likely smaller and the animals are perhaps not in intensive confinement, i.e, cages, and may have some access to the outdoors. For a more detailed examination and definition of each label, and what they mean for the animals, please read The Ultimate Betrayal: Is There Happy Meat?

Some people think that the companies producing products with alternative labels are heroically defying factory farming norms and are the saviors of our food supply. The disheartening truth is that there is little distinction; the similarities far outweigh the differences. Most of the other horrors a farmed animal endures in animal agriculture still apply to any of these alternative labels.

For example, when someone buys eggs labeled “cage-free” or “free-range,” although they likely came from hens who aren’t in battery cages, these birds nevertheless are still overcrowded in miserable, windowless warehouses where the stench of ammonia is overwhelming. They are still painfully debeaked, brutally handled, and they still go to a terrifying slaughter at a young age. It is not cost effective for any egg operation to hatch their own chicks, so the babies still come from the harsh and heartless hatcheries where all male chicks are cruelly killed by the millions soon after hatching, as they are considered a waste product of the egg industry.

When someone buys dairy products with an “organic” or “humane” label, the cows were perhaps able to go outside for some of their life, but they were still artificially inseminated, kept pregnant their entire short lives, and were milked well beyond what was ever intended for their bodies naturally. Their calves were still taken away soon after birth, never to nuzzle their mothers or drink from their udders, or to frolic in a field. If the calves born to dairy cows are male, they are worthless to the dairy industry, and are sold at auction to be killed for veal, or perhaps for meat. If the operation is organic, sick and diseased cows languish untreated so the milk is not “tainted” with needed medications.

Animals raised for meat with a feel-good label have a similar story, frequently subjected to overcrowding and painful bodily mutilations: debeaking, tail cutting, ear notching, tooth filing or clipping, castration, and de-horning, all without pain medications. And they are all sent to a sickening slaughter in the very beginning of their lives.

No matter the label, no matter the scale, commercially “farming” an animal for her meat, milk or eggs is factory farming. If an animal is hatched into this world in a sterile metal drawer without the comfort of her mother and a soft nest – that is factory farming. If a calf is ripped from his mother at birth, and is kept separate from her and other cows, alone and frightened, chained and unloved – that is factory farming. If an animal has her beak burned off, her tail cut off, his genitals ripped out – that is factory farming. If an animal is hung upside down with his throat slit open – that is factory farming.

Indeed, I would encourage the animal activist community not to use the term “factory farming” anymore because it implies that there is some “humane” farming alterative somewhere that counters the large-scale, industrial operations. By using the term “factory farming” animal activists have inadvertently contributed to a demand for “alternative” animal products. This is what we have been hearing in the shifting rhetoric of apologists for the animal agricultural industry when they say “I only buy…”

There are inherent cruelties in any kind of animal agriculture that cannot be eliminated with feel-good labels or descriptions of joyful animals who are supposedly happy till that “one bad day.” It is an industry-wide lie. Small or large-scale, the animals are never happy to be killed. There is no such thing as “happy meat.”

Is Anti Factory Farming Really Pro Environment?

In these more recent conversations, I’m also hearing people say, “but it’s better for the environment” or “it’s more sustainable” as if the ecological concerns trump the ethical. People believe that a smaller operation or an animal having a little more living space is somehow better for the planet. However, this is a case of green-washing  labeling a product to make the consumer believe that it’s better for the environment when in fact there is little or no difference from its conventional counterpart. In fact, some cases of alternative labels are even worse.

People choose grass-fed beef because they believe it has a lighter ecological-hoofprint, but actually, grass-fed animals can produce 50 to 60 percent more greenhouse gas emissions than their grain-eating cousins. They can also use more water as their activity level is higher, especially in hot, summer months.

Free-range or pasture-raised animals are no greener. Most free-range situations, especially with poultry, are just a building packed with thousands of animals, with an opening the size of a cat door sometimes providing access to a small, unappealing concrete or muddy patio onto which no bird would want to venture. The environmental impact is unchanged.

However, if there is a transition to a truly pasture-based system, the same amount of animals will now use several more acres of land. At any given time, there are 100 million head of cattle and 70 million pigs alive in the U.S. Currently, only about 9 percent of all livestock is pasture raised. How would we ever have the land to pasture raise them all? To give all farmed animals the space they need to have even a semblance of a natural life, we would have to destroy millions more acres of wild areas, forests, prairies, and wetlands to accommodate them. There is not enough land on the planet, or even two planets, to free-range all the billions of pigs, sheep, turkeys, ducks, and chickens. We would need closer to five planet Earths. It simply cannot be done. Free-ranging animals for food can never be more than a specialty market for a few elite buyers.

We must end the commercialization of animals’ bodies, for the health of the planet, our own health and especially for the sake of the animals. When animals are still enduring such misery and sadness and have their lives taken at a fraction of their lifespan, “a little better” isn’t good enough. When animal agriculture is causing 51 percent of our human caused greenhouse gas emissions, wasting vital fresh water and polluting what is left, “a little less impact” isn’t good enough. No label will ever make it right to exploit, manipulate and rob animals of their right to live free of human imposed suffering and killing.

Here in Sonoma County, I have witnessed the supposedly “best of the best” operations with a range of feel-good labels and websites proclaiming theirs are the “happiest” animals. At these farms I have seen dairy cows in manure and muck up to their bellies staring out over a fence at green grass where they will never graze. I have seen the sterile rows of calf hutches where the baby females with wobbly legs are taken from their mothers with the area where their umbilical cord was cut still wet, separated and chained to what look like rows of white dog houses, frightened, sad and alone. I have seen over-crowed, debeaked chickens touted as “free-range” standing in a mud hole with green grass just over the fence. All these animals have a death sentence that will come much too soon. All animal farming is factory farming.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) received feedback from nearly a million citizens and a host of conservation biologists for its decision to remove federal protections from wolves last year, and recently convened a new panel of experts to revisit the issue. This new panel found that the FWS relied upon one faulty paper to make its wrongful decision to strip wolves of their Endangered Species Act protections.

Without their federal safeguards, several states have opened trophy hunting and trapping seasons, and thousands of wolves have been mercilessly slaughtered. Help protect wolves and demand that they be given adequate federal protections to prevent future inhumane acts.

The FWS needs to hear from you before March 27. Please fill out the form HERE to submit a letter to U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell.

What’s Convincing 50 Million Chinese People to Go Vegetarian?

The Chinese are lovers of food. It’s a big part of their culture. While China is the land where tofu was born, it’s also no secret that the Chinese love eating meat. These days, however, literally millions in China are apparently going vegetarian — not because they have to, but because they want to.

Certainly, vegetables are less expensive than meat, and some of the shift is probably due to simple economics. There’s also no denying the centuries-old influence of Buddhism, which teaches adherents to exercise compassion. Many Buddhists adopt a vegetarian diet in response.

In addition to these factors, however, there’s a developing trend of eco-consciousness, particularly among the younger Chinese generation. It is helping to turn twentysomethings into card carrying vegans and vegetarians. More to the point, it’s turning China into the country with the most vegetarians and vegans per capita in the world.

Embracing Vegetarianism as an Environmental Issue

The ability to provide a meat-filled repast is considered a sign of Chinese prosperity. Adults who grew up eating mostly vegetables, beans and rice take pride in the fact that they can now afford to feed their families in a way they themselves weren’t able to eat decades ago.

All that meat eating comes at an environmental cost, though. Just like its neighbors in the West, China experiences all the same negative impacts of full-bore, hard charging meat production. Livestock production spews greenhouse gases into the air and pollutants into the water, animals suffer horrifically in industrialized factory farms, chemicals are added to meat to boost production and battle contamination, and the list goes on.

Sadly, the country’s extraordinary appetite for flesh means it reportedly breeds more pigs for slaughter than the next 43 pig producing countries combined. It’s a depressing example of factory farming on steroids. Let’s not forget the country’s growing obesity problem, credited to its enthusiastic adoption of the crappy fast food culture we in the West have come to know and love.

Add to all of this a continuing parade of Chinese meat scandals — fox meat sold as donkey meat, injection of dirty pond water into meat to increase its weight, horse meat found in beef lasagne — and it’s easy to see why some Chinese are inclined to stop eating meat entirely.

The younger set in China is raising a collective eyebrow at all these problems. Some want to assume personal accountability for the environmental and animal welfare issues. They are changing how they eat in response.

“Times have really changed,” vegan Chinese pop singer Long Kuan told Public Radio International. “Maybe 10 years ago, when I was a vegetarian, a lot of people said, ‘Why, are you Buddhist?’ or something. But now, it’s completely different. The young generation, especially, they love to be eco-friendly, and they love to be compassionate. And they really care about the environment and the quality of life, about pollution … they really care about fellow creatures on this planet, animals and even trees.”

Restaurants in China are seeing more patrons in their 20s and 30s asking for vegetarian and vegan fare.

“The average age of our customers is under 33 years old,” Dong Ziyang, a vegetarian restaurant manager, told China Central Television. “They’re particularly interested in the concept of eating for a low carbon life. Young people are more environmentally aware and more open to new ideas. They love to be in the trend or lead the trend.”

China Needs Pigs. Lots and Lots of Pigs.

To be sure, relative to the overall population of China, vegans and vegetarians represent only 4 to 5 percent of the dietary spectrum. In a country as big as China, that’s an impressive 50 million or so people. It’s still a minority in comparison to those who eat meat. Chinese meat eaters will demand 35 percent more of it by 2020, while their consumption of flour and rice is expected to dip by 5 percent each.

As we’ve posted previously, the world cannot sustain its current level of agricultural production aimed at feeding livestock to produce meat. Nowhere is this more true than in China, where diminishing available land is making it difficult to produce enough pork to meet demand. Still wondering why China bought Virginia’s Smithfield Foods, Inc.? Now you know. They need the pigs.

In Chinese, “bu chi rou” means “we do not eat meat.” Millions are starting to say exactly this, for all the right reasons.  Something has to change.

Stand Against the White Deer Kill in Wisconsin

Background: Source Care2

Out of the 1.5 million deer in Wisconsin, there are only 60 to 75 white ones. Visually, they’re stunning; some people even call them “ghosts of the forest.” And they’re not just incredibly rare — they’re also a potential tourist attraction, given that 14 million people have viewed a video of them posted by researchers online. So why is Gregory Kazmierski, a Scott Walker appointee to the Natural Resources Board, trying to get them killed off?

On April 14, citizens attending the Department of Natural Resources / Conservation Congress public vote will be asked to weigh in on a number of questions. Thanks to Kazmierski, one of those questions is now “Would you favor legalizing the harvest of white and albino deer statewide?”

Because Kazmierski is a DNR board member, his question did not have to go through the extensive vetting process that the other proposals did. If citizens vote yes on his question, though, it could literally mean the death knell for these gorgeous, elusive creatures.

This beautiful animal must not be lost to greed. Stand against allowing white deer slaughter in Wisconsin!

I just stopped, and then, I gained …

I just stopped, and then, I gained …

“I don’t miss anything being vegan.

It’s not mine to miss.

I didn’t give up anything.

It wasn’t mine to give up.

I just stopped, and then, I gained.

Gained some self respect that I was no longer participating in, enabling and funding exploitation, use and murder of wonderful beings. Because you truly can’t say you are against cruelty and murder while funding it. You can’t say you are an animal lover. Of ALL animals. Not with a straight face and in truth you can’t. I was a thief. A thief who stole precious things from the most vulnerable. I was party to murder. I was a terrible person. I’m so very sorry from the bottom of my heart. I can’t undo all the pain and bad things I did. But I can try to atone by refusing to continue for one second longer. To live my life honestly. When you know better, you do better, otherwise things just stay the same. Please, take a minute today to truly look at yourself and ask why you would continue living like this when we can live without it. I will help you if you need it. Please. I beg you. Just stop. The ability to do so is in us all. It’s never too late.”
