What is the difference between No Welfare, High Welfare, and Highest Welfare when they all require animals to die? Only human comfort, NONE protect the actual animals. The most humane, ethical, and honest Webster-defined "welfare" is NOT exploiting animals - not using, not wearing, not eating, not killing - animals. The only meaningful position is vegan, everything else is just how humans euphemize animals' required suffering and violent deaths: no human exploits animals because they honestly believe that NOT exploiting animals is UNethical or INhumane.

FROM COUNTDOWN TO THE COVE
Around the world, September signals the start of school…yellow school buses, children with new sneakers, lunch boxes and sharpened pencils…
In the small coastal town of Taiji, Japan, September signals the start of something sinister… The annual slaughter of thousands of dolphins.
For the first time ever, in 2010 -2011, Cove Guardian Activists from Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and Save Japan Dolphins were in Taiji every single day of the dolphin slaughter, which ran from September to March…yet the tragedy continues…
The activists witnessed day after day, week after week, month after month, as pods of dolphins were hunted and driven into the Cove by fishermen using high-tech gear. Terrified and exhausted, the dolphins were systematically and brutally bludgeoned to death. Dolphin calves swam in their mothers’ blood. By the end of the 2010-2011 “drive hunt” season, 850 dolphins were killed in the Cove. Another 171 were sold into captivity after witnessing the murder of their families.
Had they attempted to intervene, the Cove Guardians would have faced jail or deportation, neither of which would have benefitted the cause of raising awareness about the Taiji dolphin slaughter. Instead they harnessed the power of social media and reported the devastation in the Cove to activists all over the world in real time. In turn, these activists made thousands of calls, sent thousands of emails and faxes, and organized protests at Japanese Embassies across the world.
The presence of the Cove Guardians was felt – our voices were heard. The brutal killers of the Taiji Fisheries Union struggled to conceal their savagery behind blue tarps, but they were not successful. The world bore witness to the senseless killing of some of natures most beautiful and intelligent creatures.
Working with the Cove Guardians over a five day period in December, the facebook community Save Misty The Dolphin was able to help secure better captive conditions for a very sick dolphin named Misty, who had been left to die in a backyard pool. Suffering from a lung infection, Misty floated listlessly in blackened water until a non-stop calling campaign forced his captors at Dolphin Base Resort to move the animal to a clean pool and provide better veterinary care for him.
The killing resumes on September 1st!

SAMPLE LETTER
Dear Ambassadors, Consulates, Mayor, and Those Whom This Concerns:
I am shocked to learn of the malicious slaughter that continues to occur in Taiji, Japan. Each year, in a secluded and protected cove, thousands of porpoises, dolphins, whales, and their young, are brutally massacred in unpublished and concealed manners. Indeed, until a courageously dedicated group of activists secretively gained access to this yearly butchery, the world remained unknowing, with Japan’s own populace largely oblivious to the slaughter that stained its shores with the blood of innocent, sentient animals. After universal exposure, however, Taiji became the focus of campaigns to implore the discontinuation of such savagery. It comes with great disturbance that I write today, learning that the massacre continues, causing the butchery of whales and their calves along with dolphins and other innocent non-human animals.
Please allow me to elaborate. This massacre involves manipulating the animals’ destination by forcing them together and into a cove, an area from which they are unable to escape. Once imprisoned in the cove, they are viciously attacked, causing blatant torment and prolonged suffering. This “event” is promoted as a cultural tradition, a celebration of heritage and spirit, but mitigating words and euphemistic descriptions cannot conceal the inherently barbaric nature of this hunt. Any celebration built on a foundation of extreme animal cruelty, exploitation, and suffering cannot be justified as an expression of historical pride; indeed, condemning whales and dolphins, or any other animals, to a torturous “ceremony” is indefensible. Commemorating cultural history is admirable, yet subjecting innocent creatures to such primitive rituals only demonstrates Japan as a seemingly apathetic and unprincipled society, especially given the relative short time period this has been happening, since 1933, barely a dent in Japan’s long-standing and extensive history. Indeed, while this hunt is not justified traditionally, economically, or ecologically, establishing only materialistic greed as motive, it is additionally significant to illustrate these actions as evidence of arrogance, indifference, and a gross disrespect of international law. In fact, in a disturbing display of political manipulation, unscrupulous IWC appointees, taking advantage of previous administration decisions, are secretly involved in expanding, not limiting, Japan’s illegal whale trade, further damaging your reputation.
Furthermore, it is my understanding that, despite critical evidence establishing the toxicity of dolphin meat, and the subsequent discontinuation of allowing it in school meals, the Taiji mayor supports the sale of thousands of tons of dolphin meat; this meat is sold as “scientific whale” meat and its mercury content exceeds the Japanese threshold of what is legally allowed. You are no doubt familiar with the history of mercury toxicity in unsuspecting Japanese citizens, causing irreparable, life-long health damage as well as death. The inhumane treatment of animals extends to humans as well, and such egregious actions are unacceptable.
As such, I respectfully request that Japan immediately cease this indefensible hunt. Additionally, with the continual distribution and showing of the documentary “The Cove” and subsequent generated interest and shock, it is important to recognize that the global community will be intolerant of the depths of cruelty sanctioned by Japan, and it will continue to demand relief on behalf of our sentient friends. Animals, like humans, are capable of fear, love, pain, and suffering; humans have the obligation and the capacity for empathy, and we must utilize our gifts to protect them, not apathetically condemn them to potentially criminal and decidedly insufferable acts. Taiji’s disregard and exploitation of this vulnerable group of beings is unacceptable and the international witnesses will collectively voice censure of Taiji resulting in Japan’s sacrifice of vital tourism and commerce profits. Consequently it would be financially irresponsible and socially unethical for Japan to be associated with such a scorned city’s maligned ritual. Therefore, please act in a compassionate and respectful manner and command Taiji to stop this hunt against innocent animals.
I understand your time is limited and I want to thank you for your consideration of this urgent matter.

US Friends, please take a minute to let your member of Congress know that you support efforts to end the Army’s use of monkeys in chemical casualty management courses. We have provided text for you, but if you decide to write your own message, please be polite and encouraging. Here are some talking points:
- Please contact the Army and request that it cancel the upcoming shipment of vervet monkeys and end the cruel use of monkeys in chemical casualty management courses at Aberdeen Proving Ground.
- In these courses, Army instructors inject monkeys with an overdose of a drug that simulates a nerve agent attack.
- This practice continues despite the availability of superior, human-based methods.
- A transition to only human-based methods will provide a better educational experience for military medical trainees, as well as a cost-savings for U.S. taxpayers.
- Please do everything in your power to end this cruel use of monkeys today.

Although the last horse slaughterhouse in the U.S. closed in 2007, approximately 100,000 U.S. horses are crammed into trailers every year and trucked to slaughterhouses in Canada and Mexico. After a long and frightening journey, these horses—some of whom are former racing champions—are shot with a rifle or a captive-bolt gun, hoisted by one leg into the air, and have their throats slit so that their flesh can be sold to other countries for human consumption. Thoroughbred racehorse Coming Home was hours from being trucked to a slaughterhouse when a PETA investigator rescued her. PETA found a permanent home for this gentle mare, who is just 6 years old, with a PETA member, but the fate of tens of thousands of other cast-off racehorses is terrifying and gruesome. PETA’s undercover investigation of a Japanese slaughterhouse, where American thoroughbreds end up when they’re sold to Japan for breeding, revealed terrified and confused horses trying desperately to escape the facility before they were killed. The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act of 2011 (S. 1176) would prohibit shipping, transporting, moving, delivering, receiving, possessing, purchasing, selling, or donating horses and other equines for human consumption. If passed, it will effectively end the use of U.S. horses for food—here and abroad.
Please tell your senators today that you support the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act of 2011 (S. 1176) and urge him or her to vote in favor of this critically needed legislation.

MCA Denver’s “Thinking About Flying” exhibit is doing wrong by pigeons. They are sending these extraordinary, intelligent, and highly social birds—who mate for life and form strong bonds with other pigeons—home with any visitor to the museum who asks, on the premise that the people will release the birds and see if they can find their way back to a rooftop loft. Will anyone eat a pigeon? Keep them in a tiny box for life as a “pet”? Or, if released, will the birds be at risk, as “racing pigeons” always are, of running into power lines, getting lost, and not knowing how to feed themselves—of being picked off by a hawk or running into bad weather that downs them, among other hazards?
Despite pigeons’ remarkable navigation abilities and intelligence, many birds die when they fly into unexpected bad weather, are poisoned, or are attacked by predators while trying to return to their lofts. If they must land because of injury, exhaustion, or high winds, they will often starve to death because they were born in captivity and haven’t a clue how to fend for themselves out there. The decision by the artist and MCA Denver to encourage that the birds be taken to strangers’ homes in crates, with the strangers then trusted to release them from unfamiliar locations up to 100 miles away, only compounds these risks.
Pigeons also have complex and fragile social relationships. This exhibition exploits these bonds by intentionally separating pigeons from their mates, babies, and eggs; allowing them to be transported to the visitors’ homes; and placing them in the care of people with whom they’re not familiar, which creates intense anxiety for the birds. It is also irresponsible to trust museum visitors who have no experience with pigeons to provide the proper concern and care. This misguided endeavor, tragically, will result in incidents of abuse and neglect, whether deliberate or not. This would be analogous to the museum lending out dogs to visitors and then having these people release them in the neighborhood in the hope that the dogs, who often have a keen ability to find their way home, will find their way back to the museum.
The pigeons are not another inanimate medium to be manipulated or voluntary participants in this experimental installation but are sentient beings who are desperate to return home to their mates, eggs, and offspring—and often don’t make it. Contact Adam Lerner, director of MCA Denver, and urge the museum to cancel this exhibition immediately and adopt a policy that prohibits the exhibition of artwork that includes the use of live animals, the killing of animals, or the bodies of animals killed specifically for the production of a work of art.

Kaporos (“atonements”) is a custom preceding Yom Kippur – the Jewish Day of Atonement – in which chickens are ritually sacrificed by many Orthodox Jews. The person “swings” the chicken, held by the legs or by pinning the bird’s wings backward, around his or her head while chanting about transferring one’s sins symbolically onto the bird. The chicken is then slaughtered and may or may not be given to the poor. Prior to the ceremony, the chickens are packed in crates, and birds not used have been found abandoned in their crates when the ceremony was over.
The Alliance to End Chickens as Kaporos seeks to replace chickens in kaporos rituals for 3 principal reasons:
The use of chickens as kaporos is cruel. They suffer in being held with their wings pinned backward, in being swung over the heads of practitioners, and in being packed in crates, often for days without food or water leading up to the ritual, which violates tsa’ar ba’alei chaim, the mandate prohibiting cruelty to animals.
The use of chickens is not required by Jewish law. It is not a mitzvah but a custom that originated in the middle ages.
There is an acceptable substitute that not only avoids cruelty but can help reduce hunger and show compassion. Money can be used as a non-animal alternative, and funds raised can be given directly to charities that provide food for the poor and hungry throughout the year, including 13,000 Jewish families living at or below the poverty line in New York City.

Eminent Orthodox Rabbis Oppose Using Chickens in Kaporos Rituals on Grounds of Religion, Morality, and Compassion for Animals
Since this is not a clear duty but rather a tradition, and in the light of the kashrut problems and cruelty to animals, and in the light of all of what our aforementioned rabbis said, it is recommended that one should prefer to conduct the atonement ceremony with money, thus also fulfilling the great mitzva of helping poor people.
–Rabbi Shlomo Aviner, Head of Jerusalem’s Yeshivat Ateret Cohanim and Rabbi of Beit El, in a letter to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Israel quoted in The Jerusalem Post, September 14, 2010. http://www.jpost.com/VideoArticles/Article.aspx?id=188106
Beyond the objections of the Ramban, Rashba and the Bet Yosef to the custom of ‘kapparot,’ and beyond the warnings of rabbinic authorities such as the Chayei Adam, Kaf HaChaim, Aruch HaShulchan and the Mishanah Brurah regarding the halachic infringements involved in using live fowl for this custom, the latter also desecrates the prohibition against “tzaar baalei chayim” (causing cruelty to animals). Those who wish to fulfill this custom can do so fully and indeed in a far more halachically acceptable manner by using money as a substitute as proposed by the latter authorities mentioned above.
–Rabbi David Rosen, CBE, KSG, International Director of Interreligious Affairs, AJC, and Chief Rabbinate of Israel’s Honorary Advisor on Interfaith Relations. Former Chief Rabbi of Ireland, August 25, 2011
A custom must operate within the confines of Judaism’s basic fundamental values. The Torah prohibits Jews from causing any unnecessary pain to living creatures, even psychological pain. It says in the Book of Proverbs, ‘The righteous person considers the soul of his or her animal.’ The pain caused to the chickens in the process of performing Kapparot is absolutely unnecessary. Giving money is not only a more humane method of performing the practice of Kapparot but it is also a more efficient way of ensuring that those who are in need will receive the requisite assistance.
–Rabbi Shlomo Segal, Rabbi of Beth Shalom of Kings Bay in Brooklyn, New York, August 25, 2011
If you agree, please sign our petition urging practitioners of kaporos to use money instead of chickens. Thank you for your support.

Help Protect All Tigers Under the ESA: Sample Letter

BACKGROUND | FROM BORN FREE
In 1900 there were estimated to be 100,000 wild tigers. Today, fewer than 4,000 remain. Sadly, there are more tigers in captivity in the United States than exist anywhere in the wild — where they belong. And many of the tigers in captivity can be sold, killed or in other ways exploited because of a loophole in the Endangered Species Act.
After much pressure, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is proposing to close this loophole! Please take a minute today to tell the FWS that you support its proposal to rescind the “generic tiger exemption.” The deadline for comments is Wednesday, Sept. 21.
Since its promulgation 13 years ago, the “generic tiger exemption” has left us in the dark. The majority of tiger dealers in the United States have had free reign to cruelly exploit their tigers with virtually no oversight, and it has been next to impossible to determine the fate of thousands of tigers kept in certain unaccredited breeding operations.
Tigers are considered “generic” largely because they often are inbred and cross-bred in order to generate cubs for photo opportunities. Once the cubs grow up and the breeding pairs grow older or too difficult to handle, the lack of a paper trail makes it far too easy for unscrupulous “owners” to abuse and kill these tigers and even sell their parts without detection. This further fuels the illegal trade in tiger products, one of the leading and most dire threats to wild tiger populations today.
Please commend FWS for its proposal to rescind the “generic tiger exemption” today. Feel free to use (the sample letter below):

As a member of Born Free USA, I strongly support the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service proposal to remove the “generic tiger exemption.”
By removing “generic” subspecies from the list of animals exempt from registration under the Captive-Bred Wildlife (CBW) regulations, USFWS will close a dangerous loophole that allows people to keep these tigers without even applying for a permit. This loophole has put thousands of captive-bred tigers in danger of being further exploited with virtually no oversight.
I am especially concerned that the “generic tiger exemption” makes it nearly impossible for law enforcement to regulate the number of tigers in the United States and prosecute ESA violations such as the illegal trade in tiger parts, one of the leading threats to wild tiger populations today. I strongly support this proposal as a strong step toward protecting the fewer than 4,000 tigers who exist in the wild, as well as the many more tigers held in captivity, today.

To Whom It Concerns,
I am shocked to discover that Silvina Marotti is still commercially engaged with the fur industry. Due to the inherently-brutal business of fur farming, any products derived for or from the suffering and killing of animals should be rejected, and I am respectfully requesting that both Craft Design and Ms. Marotti finally discontinue profiting off the exploitation of animals.
Please watch the undercover footage of the industry you promote: animals are forced to endure deplorable conditions including living in cramped, feces-crusted cages; suffering from sickness and disease; lacking an enriching environment; and being subjected to substandard diets and severe psychological trauma. They are then butchered via anal electrocution, gassing, skinning alive, and forced trauma. Why in the world would you WANT to cause such suffering?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTZQnQeAPJc&feature=player_embedded
Humans are capable, indeed obligated, to acknowledge animals as sentient beings who, like humans, experience love, anguish, pain, and suffering. Human apathy as established by the usage of fabrications and euphemisms reflects a lack of respect, not only for animals, but also for humans, and I implore upon you to examine your role in the suffering of animals and your unscrupulous conduct as host to such a cruel business. Regrettably, as long as you unnecessarily and selfishly capitalize on the mutilation, torture, and death of animals, I will not financially support you or your associated products. Furthermore, I will share this information with family, friends, colleagues, and members of online communities.
Please make both the ethical and responsible decision to discontinue your commercial support of fur immediately: join an increasing body of compassionate designers who are listening to a concerned and attentive consumer population who refuse to be complicit in the inherently malicious industry of fur farming. I hope this letter finds you willing to scrutinize your own involvement and desire to protect, rather than harm, animals.

Dear Honorable Adalia, Tourism Officials:
I am shocked to learn of your annual Toro de la Vega event in which a bull is chased, stabbed, mutilated, and, after enduring prolonged agony and certain terror, is killed. This event is promoted as a cultural tradition, a celebration of your heritage and spirit, but your mitigating words and euphemistic descriptions cannot conceal the inherently barbaric nature of this event. Any celebration built on a foundation of extreme animal cruelty, exploitation, and suffering cannot be justified; condemning bulls, or any other animals, to a torturous ceremony for mere entertainment is indefensible. Commemorating your cultural history is admirable, yet subjecting an innocent creature to such a primitive ritual only demonstrates yours as an uncivilized, undereducated society.
Animals, as humans, are sentient creatures, capable of emotion, thought, and pain; when you support the exploitation of them, you only promote indifference and establish that you are unsympathetic to suffering. Furthermore, the global community will certainly recognize and scoff at your shameless attempts of justification and will refuse to financially contribute to such an archaic demonstration of savagery . Indeed, until you ceases the Toro de la Vega in favor of a celebration that embraces compassion and respect towards all living beings, I will necessarily maintain the only ethical decision is to promote a boycott of your country and your country’s commerce.
Please choose compassion and empathy and permanently ban the Toro de la Vega and any other rituals that inflict suffering and pain on our animal friends.
I know your time is limited, and I thank you for your attention to this urgent issue.

1. Ban Horse-Drawn Carriages in New York City – new bill needs support

From Blinders, The Truth Behind The Tradition
On Saturday, August 27th, 2011, sections of NYC were evacuated for the first time in history, and the largest public transportation system in the country was shut down due to Hurricane Irene. With conditions deteriorating, Mayor Bloomberg instructed New Yorkers to stay home for our own safety and so that emergency vehicles could easily navigate the streets. Downpours occurred throughout the day.
In spite of all of the above and the law which states that carriage operators cannot work during “ice, heavy rain or other slippery conditions,” dozens of horse-drawn carriage operators were working until at least 4:45 p.m., many hours after the City was virtually shut down. They then had to make the long, difficult trip through the wet streets of midtown back to the “stables.”
As usual, the ASPCA, which collects an untold amount of money from donors in the name of helping the carriage horses, allowed the carriage drivers to leave the stables in the morning and to work all day in the wet streets in spite of the law and in spite of pleas from animal advocates.
The horse-drawn carriage industry is enabled by the ASPCA, which claims to support a ban, and empowered by NYC Council Speaker Christine Quinn, who has blocked all efforts to take these horses out of midtown, killing bills in committee before they see the light of day.
While the NYC carriage horses have endured far worse than the intermittent pre-Irene downpours on Saturday, the carriage drivers nonetheless broke the law, and the ASPCA once again failed to protect the horses.
Following are pictures of horses working in the rain at about 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. Please share this information with your friends who donate money to animal organizations and/or who vote in NYC.

The Amazon is in serious danger: Brazil is on the verge of gutting its forest protection laws — unless we act now, vast tracts of our planet’s lungs could be opened up to clear-cutting devastation.
This threat to the Amazon has sparked widespread anger and protests across the country and tensions are rising. In an effort to stifle criticism, armed thugs, allegedly hired by loggers, have murdered environmental advocates. But the movement is fighting back — in three days, brave indigenous people are leading massive marches across Brazil to demand action and inside sources say President Dilma is considering vetoing the changes.
79% of Brazilians support a veto of the forest law changes and this internal pressure is leading some in Dilma’s administration to back a veto. But we need a global cry of solidarity with the Brazilian people to really force Dilma’s hand. Our global petition will be boldly displayed on banners at the front of the massive marches for Amazon protection.Let’s reach one million to SAVE THE AMAZON! 2. Background | From IS Foundation
The proposed Keystone XL pipeline is a project that would transport extremely toxic tar sands oil 1,700 miles from Alberta, Canada through the middle of the US heartland to the Texas Gulf coast for refining. Tar sands oil production is one of the most destructive strip mining techniques on earth and results in deforestation, habitat loss, ground water contamination, pillaging of native lands, and three times the amount of carbon released into the atmosphere than that of traditional oil.
Tar sands oil is amongst the dirtiest and carbon-intensive fuels on earth, and a spill along the pipeline’s route will be catastrophic for American farmers and residents in the region, fish and wildlife, and the food supply. The recent pipeline spills of tar sands oil into the Yellowstone River on July 1, 2011 and the massive spill in the Kalamazoo River in July 2010 underscore the dangers of this type of pipeline. Most troubling, the first Keystone pipeline, developed with state-of-the-art technology and only in operation since June 2010, has already spilled 12 times in its first year in operation, which is a stark reminder of the risks involved with this proposed expansion project.
Canadian towns near the tar sands production are already reeling from the impacts of this dirty fuel, and now a foreign corporation, TransCanada, wants to jeopardize Americans with the same type of environmental destruction for the sake of private industry profits.
At a time when America needs to reduce its reliance on oil and to protect the environment for future generations, the Keystone XL pipeline would keep our country addicted to this unsustainable and highly polluting fuel even longer. Instead of recklessly fast-tracking this dangerous project, the US could instead be focusing our attention on encouraging lightweight and fuel-efficient vehicles, electrification of transportation, expansion of mass-transit, and other proven solutions for reducing our oil demand, while preserving our environment at the same time.
Changing the way we use energy is in our national interest. As President Obama himself has said, “For the sake of our economy, our security, and the future of our planet, we must end the age of oil in our time.” Denying the permit for Keystone XL will send a powerful signal that the United States is boldly taking action on climate change and clean energy by refusing to be tethered to the energy sources of the past.
We call on Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and President Barack Obama to fulfill their promises to act on climate change by denying the permit for Keystone XL.

Cargill Inc. just reported a record net profit of $4.2 billion dollars. As the world’s biggest importer of rainforest-destroying palm oil into the US, it’s easy to see how. Cargill’s palm oil operation has been run with the ruthless mentality of a cut throat trader: buy low, sell high and to hell with the inconvenience of considering the impact on people and planet.
Tell Cargill CEO Greg Page that his balance sheet must be cleared of slave labor, human rights violations and species extinction.

Background | From PCRM
Please send message urging European Commission member John Dalli to keep the EU on track to ban the sales of cosmetics tested on animals in March 2013.
We have provided text for you, but if you decide to write your own message, please be polite and encouraging. Here are some talking points:
- I support a full ban on cosmetics tested on animals.
- The deadline (March 2013) for banning animal-tested cosmetics should not be delayed.
- The deadline has driven significant progress in alternatives development, and moving it back may delay the development of humane, effective test methods.
Message Text
I join the vast majority of Europeans who strongly oppose animal testing. That’s why I was thrilled when the EU passed the 7th amendment to the Cosmetics Directive in 2003 to ban animal testing for cosmetics and to ban the marketing of any cosmetics product tested on animals. I’ve been anxiously awaiting the 2013 final deadline for removing any cosmetics tested on animals from store shelves in Europe. And I’m writing to let you know that I fully support the 2013 deadline. The approaching EU ban has motivated companies worldwide to make significant progress in developing new nonanimal test methods. These new humane, effective methods can also be used for testing drugs and other chemicals, which would end even more animal tests. Nonanimal test methods are often cheaper, faster, and more effective than animal tests. In addition, these methods save the lives of tens of thousands of animals. It’s crucial that the deadline stay in place to continue driving innovation and progress in alternatives development.

Dear Friends,
Sweden is in the process of eradicating their wildlife. Despite the directive from EU, Sweden continues the killing of bears, lynx, and wolves. 293 bears will be killed; 11 have already been slaughtered, 1 of whom was just a baby. Please protest and see Sweden trying to ‘trick’ EU on wolf hunt for an example of the dishonesty.

SAMPLE LETTER
To Whom It Concerns,
It has come to my attention that you are sanctioning the malicious hunting of bears, and I am requesting you provide immediate relief on behalf of these non-human animals so callously and brutally targeted for destruction by cancelling the hunt without delay. Although I have no evidence of either scenario, I suspect that to establish endorsement, pro-killing enthusiasts and supporters exaggerate potentially dangerous situations and exploit community fear, dispelling any measures to protect wildlife; or the pro-killing groups are over-estimating population numbers, establishing a false threshold met to promote killing to subsequently lower numbers. Indeed, the human animal is deceptively clever and duplicitous in gaining support for the vicious killing of non-human animals.
Furthermore, it is important that you are aware that the brown or grizzly bear, ursos arctos, is considered a threatened species in many locales, and is also listed by the UN Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) as at-risk or endangered depending upon location, and that hunting them could be considered an international crime.
Therefore, I respectfully request that, based on the established brutality involved as well as the potentiality for facilitation of illegal animal commerce and trade, you please vacate any licenses provided and dispense with any further hunting operation against the the bears and instead seek non-lethal interventions as necessary if required. Please leave your reputation free of such brutal, inequitable hunting enterprises, and do not allow economical benefits, hunting sympathizers, and distorted accusations to dominate over ethics and judicious resolutions.
Thank you for your attention to this important issue.

From Huffington Post

Ever consider putting your pet under the knife? From silicone testicles to nose jobs, cosmetic surgery for pets is on the rise in some regions of the world, reports The Telegraph.
U.K. insurance company Petplan churned out the numbers based on claims made by British pet owners in 2010.
Not only was there a jump in nose jobs by 25% over three years costing a total of $2.5 million in 2010, but $1.6 million was also invested in eyelifts, says PetPlan.
Then there are Neuticles, the fake, bean-shaped testicles made out of solid silicone, which come in a range of sizes for the neutered dog to maintain pride and self-esteem.
Jim and Jaime Davenport of Atlanta, Georgia opted for the testicular implants for their English Bulldog. In an ABC News interview, the couple explained that it was just too “out there” that their dog, Munson, had been neutered.
The Davenports aren’t alone. According to neuticles.com, “over 250,000 pets worldwide have been Neuticled since 1995.”
Is this just a growing trend of vain pet owners? Surgical procedures that involve putting an animal under general anesthesia can be life-threatening.
Save them rather than spend oodles on medically unnecessary procedures, the choice is free | From Farm to Fridge
Vodpod videos no longer available.
Traditionally, some breeders have been proponents of tail docking and ear folding, which the ASPCA stands against.
“The ASPCA is opposed to elective surgeries that are undertaken solely to conform to breed standards, including cropping ears and docking tails,” ASPCA spokesman Bret Hopman wrote in an email statement to The Huffington Post.
Petplan says some procedures offer better comfort and improve a dog or cat’s quality life.
American veterinarian Marty Becker told ABC News that an operation isn’t normally performed unless there is an underlying medical reason.
For instance, face lifts can reduce the amount of skin sagging from a dog’s face if he hasn’t fully grown into it and allow him to see again, according to the Daily Mail.
Nose surgeries can also improve breathing problems in pets with flat noses, says PetPlan.
With over half of America’s dogs and cats overweight or obese, another popular pet cosmetic surgery is liposuction, according to a Yahoo News video with Dr. Brett Boatsman.
But Boatsman recommends diet pills to deal with weight-loss, instead of surgery.

Please protest extremely cruel Guga Hunt, sample message

Please protest Guga Hunt using the Sample Letter, but please remember to include the first source sentence and write your name in the appropriate area, thank you.
BACKGROUND | FROM SCOTTISH SPCA
The Scottish SPCA has renewed its call for the annual guga hunt on the island of Sula Sgeir to be banned.
Scotland’s animal welfare charity has also written to the Scottish Government and Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH), requesting that plans not to monitor the hunt are reviewed if licences continue to be issued.
Each August two thousand gannet chicks, known as gugas, are beaten to death on Sula Sgier by hunters from Ness, on the Isle of Lewis, in order to be eaten.
Responsibility for licensing the hunt has this year been transferred from the Scottish Government to SNH.
Chief Superintendent Mike Flynn said, “These birds are killed by being struck on the head with a heavy implement.
“This is an abhorrent method of slaughter which should be banned.
“The licence issued states that the birds must be killed humanely, yet there is no requirement for the hunt to be inspected and we understand SNH does not intend to do so.
“We believe it is entirely appropriate to ask for the body issuing the licence, which effectively certifies that this practice is not cruel, should ensure it is monitored and that the licence it has issued is being adhered to.
“We are concerned that many of these birds will not be killed by a single blow.
“Causing any of these birds unnecessary suffering would be an offence and as such we would expect future licences to be denied.
“If inspections are not undertaken and if it cannot be demonstrated that these birds are not suffering then we find it impossible to conclude that issuing licences can be justified.”
We reject arguments that guga hunting should be granted special dispensation on the grounds of tradition.
“We appreciate that guga hunting was a way of life for the people from Ness and that gannet chicks were an essential food supply hundreds of years ago,” said Chief Superintendent Flynn.
“However, brutalising animals in this way under the guise of tradition has no place in modern society.”

My name is _______, and I fully subscribe to the contents of the following letter courtesy Zelda Penzel, President, PEACE; please note that until such a time as this event is cancelled, I will promote a boycott of your country’s tourism and commerce:
Honorable Officials, Ladies, Gentlemen,
As an educator and concerned citizen, I was horrified to learn (http://www.scottishspca.org/news/656_guga-hunt-should-be-banned) that Scotland’s island of Sula Sgeir is home to an extraordinarily cruel event known as the Guga hunt and that Scottish National Party MP Angus MacNeil has confirmed that he will be personally taking part in this year’s Guga hunt on the Isle of Lewis, Na h-Eileanan An Iar.It is not unusual for politicians/elected officials to show their support for local “traditions”, but this is beyond the pale and there can be no justification whatsoever for any official to support, defend, and participate in something that is clearly abusive, cruel, and inhumane.
Shame on Scotland! It does not get much more outrageous and appalling than beating a living creature to death, as he/she suffers in the process. How can civilized and caring people look the other way? How can elected officials condone this hideous and senseless abuse of living, sentient beings? What is the lesson you are teaching our children by allowing this obscenity to take place with the stamp of approval of government officials? Not all traditions are equal, nor deserving of being preserved. This is one that should be relegated to the dustbin of history.
I urge you to take immediate action to put an end to this shameful medieval display of ignorance, insensitivity, and lack of compassion. It is a “teachable moment” and I hope you will use it to do just that: teach your children and citizens that compassion and the humane treatment of all creatures outweighs any other needs or concerns. I await your response and want to thank you in advance, for doing the right thing.
Sincerely,

Petitions Against Belo Monte Dam Project

Please sign the below petitions protesting the Belo Monte Dam project. As of this published alert, all petitions are legitimate and working. Please note you will need to verify your signature on a couple via email, thank you.
Background | From Jungle Defender
The Brazilian government is moving ahead “at any cost” with plans to build the third-largest dam in the world and one of the Amazon’s most controversial development projects – the Belo Monte dam on the Xingu River in the state of Pará. The Belo Monte dam complex dates back to Brazil’s military dictatorship and the government has attempted to build it through various series of national investment programs including Brasil em Ação and the Program to Accelerate Growth. Original plans to dam the Xingu have been greenwashed through multiple public relations programs over the course of two decades in the face of intense national and international protest.
Impacts on Environment and People
In order to feed the powerhouse of the Belo Monte dam complex, up to 80% of the Xingu River will be diverted from its original course, causing a permanent drought on the river’s “Big Bend,” and directly affecting the Paquiçamba and Arara territories of the Juruna and Arara indigenous peoples. To make this possible, two huge canals 500 meters wide by 75 km long will be excavated, unearthing more land than was removed to build the Panama Canal. Belo Monte’s two reservoirs and canals will flood a total of 668 km2 of which 400 km2 is standing forest. The flooding will also force more than 20,000 people from their homes in the municipalities of Altamira and Vitoria do Xingu.
Imagine if Hurricane Katrina was not a hurricane at all, but an event sponsored by the federal government, in collaboration with several multinational corporations. If your imagination fails you, then perhaps you’ll get a clearer picture by learning about the people of the Xingu River.

Demand Action Against Cruel Donkey Killing

Please click on and sign: Demand Action Against Cruel Donkey Killing
Background | From PETA
PETA India has been bombarded with complaints from people who were horrified to learn from this news video (below) that a donkey was brutally killed in Churu on August 7, 2011. We have been informed by locals that this cruelty took place on the order of Govind Mhansariya, chair of Nagar Parishad, Churu district.
The video footage shows that the donkey was pushed and pulled to ground before being crushed to death by a bulldozer. The killing reportedly took place because some local residents thought the donkey might have rabies because the donkey had been examining a dead dog—even though this behavior is not a confirmatory symptom of rabies.
Besides being an act of gross cruelty, torturing an animal is an illegal and punishable offense under India’s Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. Further, a procedure for the destruction of ill and suffering animals is set out in the act, and a government veterinarian should have been called to provide a medical opinion on the matter and to euthanize the animal humanely if required.
PETA India has written a letter to Vikas S. Bhale, the district magistrate of Churu, demanding prompt action against the chair of Nagar Parishad. We have also offered to help the government implement a training and awareness program for relevant government officials, including veterinarians in the area, so that animals who are thought to have rabies can be handled humanely in the future.
Please help by adding your voice to the campaign and urging the district magistrate to take action against the accused officer immediately.

1. Urge Miss Maryland Pageant to Drop Fur Prizes
2. Demand J Lo Stops Wearing Fur
1. Background | From Change
The Miss Maryland pageant continues to give away fur prizes despite knowing that animals killed for their skins live in cramped, filthy conditions before being killed by electrocution, neck-breaking, or gassing. Most fur comes from China, where animals—including dogs and cats—are bludgeoned and even skinned alive for their fur, as seen in this brief video narrated by Eva Mendes (below).
The Miss Florida competition has just announced that it will no longer give away fur prizes, and many top designers—including Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren, and Stella McCartney—and retailers such as J. Crew and Forever 21 now refuse to use or sell any fur products, in part because young consumers are largely opposed to the cruelty of fur. More and more public figures are shunning fur—and not just actors and models. Michelle Obama and Carla Bruni-Sarkozy recently announced that they are fur-free too.
Please give a voice to the animals who suffer and die for their fur and urge the Miss Maryland pageant coordinators to set an example of compassion by pledging not to give away fur prizes in future pageants.

No matter where it came from, every fur coat, trim, and trinket caused an animal tremendous pain and suffering, and ultimately took away its life. Animals in fur farms spend their entire lives confined in cramped, filthy wire cages. Fur farmers use the cheapest and cruelest killing methods available, including suffocation, electrocution, gas, and poison.
Animals who are trapped in the wild can suffer for days from blood loss, shock, dehydration, frostbite, gangrene, and attacks by predators. They may be caught in steel-jaw traps that slam down on their legs, often cutting to the bone; Conibear traps, which crush their necks with 90 pounds of pressure per square inch; or water-set traps, which leave beavers, muskrats, and other animals struggling for more than nine agonizing minutes before drowning.
During the annual Canadian seal slaughter, tens of thousands of baby harp seals are shot or repeatedly bludgeoned with clubs tipped with metal hooks. Also in Canada, hundreds of black bears are shot at point-blank range or caught in traps and left to suffer for days so that their skins can be used to make the ceremonial hats worn by Queen Elizabeth II’s Five Guards’ Regiments.
Jennifer Lopez is one of the largest celebrity supporters of fur. She has been seen on many occasions wearing fur for photo shoots, music videos and at awards shows. Lopez claims she would like to be educated on why fur is cruel, yet after repeated videos, photos and information have been relayed to her, she continues to turn her back on the cruelty and buy fur for herself. Lopez also uses fur in her fashion line.
Please join us in asking Jennifer Lopez to stop using fur, thus saving the lives of millions of innocent animals.

USA friends: five actions to support the Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act
Background | From PCRM
More than 1,000 chimpanzees suffer in laboratories within the United States, and taxpayers are footing the bill. Many of these chimps were captured from the wild as infants and have spent decades languishing in cages the size of a kitchen table, subject to repeated invasive procedures, just as you see in this undercover video taken at the New Iberia Research Center in Louisiana. This is the Real Planet of the Apes – and it ain’t Hollywood.
It’s time for the National Institutes of Health to stop funding experimentation on chimpanzees and shift our support to sophisticated, modern, ethical research methods that are more appropriate for protecting human health.
- Ending chimpanzee research would save taxpayers $300 million over ten years.
- The United States is the last country in the world that permits large-scale chimpanzee experiments because they are expensive and ineffective.
- In over a quarter of a century, more than 85 HIV vaccines were developed that demonstrated benefits in nonhuman primates but all failed in at least 200 human trials.
Now is the time to join the rest of the world and stop experimenting on chimpanzees. Sign this petition now and send a message to the National Institutes of Health: chimpanzees belong in a sanctuary – not a laboratory!
