Facts About Declawing

  • Declawing is amputation; it is not merely the removal of the claws. To declaw a cat, the veterinarian cuts off the last knuckles of a cat’s paw – cutting through bone, tendons, skin and nerves. In a person, it is equivalent to amputating each finger or toe at the last joint.
  • Declaw surgery can be an extremely painful procedure with associated health risks and complications such as infection.
  • Declaw surgery can produce permanent lameness, pain or arthritis.
  • Declawing is the same mutilating procedure for house cats or big cats.

UNBELIEVABLE THAT SOME VETS ACTUALLY DO THIS DE-CLAWING. ID LIKE TO DE-NAIL THEM AND THOSE WHO HAVE HAD THEIR ANIMALS DONE. IT’S SICKENING, IT’S VERY CRUEL AND IT’S WRONG ON EVERY LEVEL . THEIR NALS/CLAWS ARE THERE FOR A REASON AS ANYONE WITH ANY COMON SENSE KNOWS.THIA MUST BE BANNED .ITS A DISGRACE AND DISGUSTING !!

I agree, Linda; it is actually illegal in some areas and countries, the rest need to catch up now. Thanks.

I do love to look at my cats getting their claws sharpened on the soft furniture…. eh eh eh I’m not taking these along on my last trip (after death).
I don’t want to be sarcastic, really, believe me, but I think this is just a regular way to behave as I do scratch my back or massage my feet when I’m tired…
Each animal (and humans as well) have particular behaviours: cats love to scratch on soft things! And this is normal… they need to do so to get rid (sometimes) of the old covers of the claws. Never saw sticking pieces of claws inside tissue items?
This “declawing” thing is tremendous, awful and barbaric… shame on the owners of cats and double shame on the vet who does it without considering the pain they give to these living beings. But there isn’t any reason at all… but the complete stupidity and egotistical way of living of many humans.

And they also need their claws for self-defense, should they ever be a situation like that. It really is sad, and here, it used to be common-place – the vet would do it along with a spay or neuter, as common as everyday! Thankfully the truth is now known (finally!). Vets should be stricken from practice should they commonly practice this barbaric procedure. Thank you, dearest Claudine.

There’s not much de-clawing done in the British Isles as far as I know. We just have to buy scratching posts and put up with the occasional scratch. Claws are a huge part of a cats lifestyle. The procedure itself is incredibly cruel but even if you could do it humanely it would still be a cruel thing to do. It would be like deciding that humans didn’t need their toes or something like that.
