URGENT: Ask German Valley, Illinois, to Ditch Cruel Event
BACKGROUND
Pigs are social, intelligent, loyal, and highly sensitive animals who enjoy communicating with each other, making nests, and relaxing in the sun. But on Saturday, June 8, the village of German Valley, Illinois, has scheduled a “Pig Scramble” event to take place during its German Valley Days festival. Such events typically involve frantic groups of people chasing, grabbing at, and tackling terrified pigs confined to pens lined with screaming crowds. Being trucked to and fro and subjected to the violence and general chaos of these events is a horrific and hazardous ordeal for the pigs, who often sustain severe injuries such as broken limbs and backs. PETA has asked organizers to replace this cruel activity with any number of humane alternatives, but to no avail. We need your help today!
Please politely urge the festival’s organizers to cancel this cruel event. And please, spread this alert far and wide!

SAMPLE LETTER
Dear President Jewell,
Pigs are social, intelligent, loyal, and highly sensitive animals who enjoy communicating with each other, making nests, and relaxing in the sun.
I am disturbed to learn of this and am therefore respectfully urging you cancel this unjustified and cruel event. Pigs are marvelously intelligent and sentient creatures, capable of love, pain, thought, and suffering; when you subject pigs to such indecent treatments, you not only condemn them to fear and agony, but you also demean yourself and establish that you are unsympathetic.
Furthermore, when you actively engage in this type of cheap entertainment in front of children, and, in fact, have children actually potentially participating in such, you are demonstrating that animal abuse and disrespect are socially-approved activities, and the link between animal and human abuse is represented. I therefore urge you to cease this exploitation and demonstrate that yours is a community that recognizes the importance of animal protection rather than animal abuse.
Thank you for taking the time to read this urgent appeal.

The other address went threw perhaps they blocked or closed the other account because of the inflow of emails it happens all the time with a group i belong to that send out what we call “Cyber leaflets” telling others about the abuse animals suffer in the circus & giving info an links to protest events im not surprised at all! Lets hope we are getting to them! Whats with all these “Scrambles”? Its so sad and disgusting the way they are catching on!

Thank you so much, hon, I will remove that one. Karen’s did not go through either. I’m pretty confident they blocked it so our protests would not go through. If you ever have any alerts from Cyber Leaflets that you want on Our Compass, just let me know, I’d be more than happy to publish them!

I think the pigs are safer and treated better than some of the children in this country. The pigs probably even live a much better life than most people in other countries. Seriously, most of the kids are too afraid to even touch them. I’m not sure what horrific pig scramble videos you all have been watching, but the German Valley event is safer than you will ever know. The most horrific thing I have witnessed is a pig pooping and a kid running through it. ( actually pretty hysterical).

People who use animals for entertainment or fun usually fail to understand their capacity for abuse because it’s fun to the PARTICIPANTS or to the SPECTATORS, not to the animals. Indeed, it’s not FUN for the animals who are being USED in such abnormal and cruel manners. It’s interesting you cannot understand that, Mya. Put yourself in the same position, Mya, with no prior agreement, and how would you feel? Are you lacking empathy?
What is also interesting, Mya, is that you complain about the very thing you involve yourself with. If you believe we should concern ourselves with other things and that we are wasting our time, well, you are the hypocrite for doing the exact same thing. All the time you could have used helping those people in OK, you instead spent on this site, on the very issue you criticize us for. That’s hypocritical, Mya; I am sorry you don’t understand that. I am also sorry your lack of empathy prevents you from understanding that animals, such as people, are sentient creatures, capable of fear, pain, love, and suffering and that your fundamental self is immune to such a humane and normal stance. In time you will hopefully come to understand such, if you are not too busy having fun that is.
And next time, you can skip using the Contact Us form, unless you just wanted a more anonymous platform for yelling and spewing hate.

I don’t mean to “pork” fun at you all, but as a Geman Valley resident, I think you are making a big deal out of something very harmless. There have never been any pigs harmed in this event, let alone “severe injuries such as broken limbs and backs.” With all due respect, there are so many other things to spend time worrying about right now, like helping all the people and animals injured in the tornadoes that have ravaged Moore. Seriously, find something else to do with your time that can really make a difference and don’t worry about a harmless small town event that you know nothing about. They are still looking for chilren in Moore that were burried alive, so if you want to do something nobel, start there.

seriously, mya? ask the pigs how “harmless” this barbarism is. how do you know no pigs have been harmed? are you the official overseer of pig injuries? please stop with your lofty “helping people in tornadoes” comment, or can’t you multi-task? I care about stopping ANIMAL abuse. btw, the words are spelled “noble” and “buried”.

Whomever started this ridiculous alert/petition I need to ask you one question….Have you ever attended our German Valley Days EVER? I have for 30+ years and I have NEVER seen a pig injured in any way. Get off your animal rights kick and leave our town alone. Are you also going to come in and petition our “Pork Chop” dinner fundraiser for the VOLUNTEER Firemen too. Just try. We are a close and strong community very supportive of local farming and farmers. If you do not like it then please do us a favor and do not come. The ages for these little kids catching pigs are little ones around 3yrs old and no bigger than 8. What next? Will you be petitioning every fairgrounds for no more chicken scratches, pig scrambles, calf scrambles? Why not hit the rodeos too while your at it? In fact, You will be quite busy trying to petition “SO MUCH” animal cruelty at horse races and dog shows. Go volunteer your time at a local humane society and peddle your papers somewhere else!

Listen, Jax, we know you are Mya, Rosie, Tricia, and Lorrell. We know you are at home versus on your cell phone versus at school during class. I’ve maintained my patience and will allow you to continue your immature tirades but with one clause: nothing you say, no hate you spew, no swearing you engage in, and certainly no threats will change our minds. We’re animal rights activists, we act on behalf of animals, not on behalf of those who abuse them. So, please, continue your childish name-grabbing and email-changing rants. We know who you are regardless of any you decide to use.

Wow, the hillbillies must be really bored to be tackling pigs. I guess there’s no real forms of exercise out there.
While I think it’s terrible for the animals, I really don’t think these people give a crap what anyone says and they are going to do it anyway.

What kind of town would treat pigs this way? This is just unnecessary. Besides being man’s best friend (they are shown to be able to detect truffles much more efficiently than dogs), pigs posses the ability to love and nurture not only their young but human young as well. I hope some day you people can look back at this and say to yourself “that was some pig”.
