Avon, Mary Kay, and Estée Lauder Are Paying for Tests on Animals

After PETA’s massive campaign two decades ago, Avon, Mary Kay, and Estée Lauder ended all tests on animals, but now we have learned that recently, all three companies have been paying for tests on animals at the request of the Chinese government—and that they did not inform PETA or consumers that their policies had changed. We have no choice but to downgrade them by placing them on our list of companies that do test on animals.
Countless rats, guinea pigs, rabbits, and other animals suffer and die every year in cruel and pointless product tests. They have chemicals rubbed into their eyes and onto their raw skin, and they die alone and in pain. As a consumer, these animals need YOU to support companies that don’t perform—or pay others to perform—cruel tests and to ask those that do to stop.
When we learned that the Chinese government requires tests on animals before many cosmetics products can be marketed in China, we immediately contacted all three companies. While we understand that China is an enormous market that these companies aren’t willing to ignore, we had hoped they would take action to eliminate this requirement or push for non-animal test methods to be accepted. Mary Kay has taken some steps to work with officials in China and, at our urging, promised to continue this effort—but Avon and Estée Lauder appear to have gone along with the painful animal tests without objection.
To end these painful tests, PETA is financially supporting the efforts of the Institute for In Vitro Sciences (IIVS), which is putting together a coalition of scientific experts, providing training in non-animal test methods for scientists in China, and working with officials there to promote the acceptance of the more humane testing methods used in the U.S. and Europe.
Fortunately, there are still more than 1,000 companies on our “Don’t Test“ list whose products consumers can buy with a clear conscience.
SPEAK UP! Let Avon, Mary Kay, and Estée Lauder know that you are disappointed in their backsliding and that you will no longer buy the companies’ products as long they are tested on animals!

SAMPLE LETTER:
Subject: Why I Won’t Buy Your Products
Dear Decision Maker,
I was distressed to learn that your company is paying to have your products tested on animals for marketing in China.
Your company has violated the trust of loyal customers, and you have disrespected consumers like me who have counted on your brand for decades largely because of your cruelty-free policies.
I will no longer be purchasing your products, and I will be sharing this disturbing information with everyone I know.
Sincerely,
(YOUR NAME AND COUNTRY)

To: “JT Waldie” Thank you for your email sharing your concerns, and for giving us the opportunity to respond.
Avon does not conduct animal testing to substantiate the safety of any of its products. In fact, Avon was the first major cosmetics company to end animal testing on products, more than 20 years ago.
Although Avon does not conduct animal testing to substantiate the safety of any of its products, some select products may be required by law in a few countries to undergo additional safety testing, under the directive of a government or health agency. This may include animal testing, and in those few instances Avon always attempts to persuade the requesting authority to accept non-animal test data. When those attempts are unsuccessful, Avon cannot break the law and therefore we must submit the products requested. This is an issue facing all global beauty companies, we are not alone in this dilemma and we continue to push for alternate measures.
Avon has worked to advance alternatives to animal testing for decades. The Vice President of Product Safety & Integrity serves on the Scientific Advisory Panel of The Institute of the In Vitro Sciences, Inc. (IIVS), a non-profit research and testing organization dedicated to the advancement of in vitro (non-animal) methods worldwide. Similarly, Avon continues to support research into alternatives conducted by the Fund for the Replacement of Animals in Medical Experiments (FRAME) in the United Kingdom, the Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing at Johns Hopkins University in the US, and the European Partnership for Alternative Approaches to Animal Testing. Avon is a Founding Sponsor of the American Society for Cellular Computational Toxicology. In addition, Avon works closely on this issue with other companies in the Beauty industry through the US Personal Care Products Council.
You can be confident that Avon shares your commitment to animal safety. Opposition to animal testing and respect for animal welfare are a cornerstone of product safety for Avon, and Avon continues to actively work to advance the use of alternatives to animal testing worldwide. We encourage you to call for the global acceptance of non animal test data.
Sincerely,
Tod Arbogast
Vice President,

This is what I received as a response via email on Friday. LOT OF BUNK IF YOU ASK ME! Avon “pays” someone else to do the testing is actually doing the testing. And this comment (the last paragraph) is extremely hypocritical to say the least!

They have the option to NOT work with companies who test on animals. Like what do we eat, they can consider what ingredients they use. They should also be a little more inclined to keep the jobs in the USA and NOT work with a nation of sadists and criminals. Not all chinese are bad, but the government isn’t doing anything to change this, and the good have to put up a bigger fight.

Dermalogica products are not tested on animals. I will be writing all the ones down that are posted here and not use them any more. These companies are selfish and greedy. Uncarring is the biggest one for me.

does anyone have concrete information on amway/artistry? I have a feeling that they also test on animals because they sell in china and the law there requires it. I’ve read that they do not, but I haven’t found any concrete statements from them. thanks!
