UPDATE, 9/15: NC lab halts work after PETA video, animals to be released need forever homes, please help if you are able
**I have asked about Clementine specifically and will update here when I get the information as to where she is.
Thank you so much to Shannon and Jessica for this information, please see below for original article about Clementine.
These animals need to be adopted from PLRS Lab in North Carolina, and the cats in particular are looking for forever homes. If you are able to open your home, please contact Cathy with Animal Welfare Institute Online , email address below, or if you are a nearby shelter who can take some of the animals:
From Cathy, AWIO:
She said the animals will actually be going to shelters first and won’t be directly adopted.
What she needs most right now is to be contacted by any shelters in NC or VA (or neighboring states) that would be willing to take some of the animals! Any shelters that are willing to help should call or email her:
http://www.awionline.org/ht/d/OrganizationDetails/i/2/pid/212
She also said if people are interested in adopting any of the animals (especially people in NC or VA), she needs them to email her this information at:
- Name
- Address
- Phone Number
- What animal(s) or types of animals they’re interested in adopting.
If she knows what areas people have people willing to adopt one of the animals, she may be able to get the shelters to take 1 or 2 more of them.
Once she has shelters to take all the animals she will send out emails to those who emailed her letting them know where to go.

Clementine’s Story
A gentle senior Dalmatian named Clementine has been imprisoned at Professional Laboratory and Research Services (PLRS) for as long as seven years. According to a PLRS supervisor, the laboratory bought Clementine in 2003 from a notorious animal dealer that has since been shut down for “severe mistreatment and neglect of a multitude of animals.” The dealer had acquired Clementine from an animal shelter. Clementine also referred to as “38902” spends her lonely days in a concrete and chain-link cell without exercise, affection, or attention. Every day, she is deprived of a home, a family, simple comfort, veterinary care, and enrichment.
Instead of living with a family in a good home, she endures the abuses of “life” at PLRS, where the floor’s poor drainage forces her to spend most of her days standing in her own urine and/or a bleach and water solution. Workers spray a caustic bleach solution into the cage while she is still inside it. Raw, open sores cover her limbs. Excrement is caked on her body.
When PETA’s investigator reported Clementine’s injuries, she was told that they were “just part of life at PLRS” and that she should not tell the veterinarian who visits PLRS once a week or so about them. According to a PLRS supervisor, Clementine was diagnosed with heartworm disease in 2005 but has never been treated.
PETA’s investigator visited Clementine when time permitted and, over a period of months, saw Clementine’s physical and psychological health decline. Clementine appeared to be depressed and cried when the investigator left her. The investigator’s requests to adopt Clementine were denied.
Unlike PLRS employees, who are free to leave the laboratory, Clementine cannot escape. She remains locked in a cage and is being considered for use in a cruel experiment.

What humans are doing to animals is insane, cruelty and evil are put together, there is no excuse for torturing an animal an making them suffer…I really hope this is going to STOP NOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dr. Larry Cruthers from Chesapeake, VA is the veterinarian for PLRS. Robyn Slone is an employee. Helen Sonenshine is the owner of this “lab of horrors.” The video that was released by PETA shows a 9 month undercover investigation by PETA. I could not watch this video in its entirety due to the upsetting nature of so many events that took place while these poor animals were in the care of these “monsters.” I was told by Gates County Sheriff Ed Webb, that this video did not even touch on what occurred at this laboratory on a daily basis. I will not rest until these vile individuals are tried and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law … my only hope is that they will never see the light of day and that they endure the same torment, pain and suffering (or worse) that they inflicted on each and every animal under their horrific care.

PETA: PROTEST THIS THURSDAY AT PLRS LAB!
Thank you so much for everything that you do to advocate for animals, and thanks especially for your recent efforts to help animals imprisoned at PLRS.
I wanted to let you know the latest on the campaign.
As you know, the online petition targets the companies that have used PLRS in the past (and some were using PLRS during the time of our investigation). We would like these companies to permanently sever all ties with PLRS, so if a company responds to an individual by saying that they haven’t used PLRS recently (as Merial did), we need to push them to pledge that they will never use PLRS in the future. Right now, that petition has more than 35,000 signatures, which is pretty phenomenal for 5 days. For people who want to do more, we’re encouraging people to phone the companies and push the point that they need to permanently sever all ties with PLRS. I’ve included the telephone numbers of the companies below.
We are organizing a demonstration outside PLRS [1251 NC Highway 32 North, Corapeake, NC] this coming Thursday, September 16th, at 12 noon (EST). I’ll send more details on parking, etc. when they’re ready, but for now, we have the time and date. We’ll have posters, etc., and people only need bring their lovely compassionate selves! It would be great if you could make it out to the demo, Sharon, and wonderful if you could also spread the word to people you know.
Here are the phone numbers for the companies that have contracted with PLRS:
Elanco/Eli Lilly: 317-276-2000
Pfizer: 212-733-2323
Happy Jack: 252-747-2911
Heska Corp: 970-493-7272
Intervet/Schering-Plough: 908-423-1000
Novartis: 862-778-8300
Wellmark (Zodiac): 925-948-4000
Virbac Animal Health: 817-831-5030
Sergeant’s Pet Care Products: 402-938-7039
Merial: 678-638-3000
Bayer: 412-777-2000
And here is the information for Frank Parrish’s office (he’s the District Attorney for the area in NC where the laboratory is located):

Someone should start a fundraiser and raise $ to offer to purchase Clementine and any other animals they will release for money. Perhaps a benefactor can contribute. I know it’s not ideal to pay these people, but we have to do all we can to help get them out!!

Looks like Ms. Helen Sonenshine and husband do a lot of “donating” to OLD DOMINION UNIVERSITY. perhaps the university would care to know that they money they are using comes from cruel experiments to animals?

That’s funny… there’s a Dr. Daniel Sonenshine on the faculty of Old Dominion University:

and he just happens to be a world renowned expert on ticks. He also just happens to be married to a woman named Helen:

I wonder what really happened to Clementine. Will we ever know? PETA doesn’t seem to know and when searching the web, the only information I find is that the lab wouldn’t release her, and that one of the employees had adopted her. But what is the truth? I keep thinking of this poor, sad dog – if she will ever find peace and happiness. If anyone knows – please share the information!

Have you ever considered about including a little bit more than just your articles?
I mean, what you say is fundamental and all. Nevertheless just imagine if you added some great photos or video clips to give your posts more, “pop”!
Your content is excellent but with pics and video clips, this site could definitely be
one of the best in its niche. Great blog!
