HighestWelfare.Humane.Assured.GoodPractices.Vegetarian. Regenerative.Flexitarian.Lies...
What is the difference between No Welfare, High Welfare, and Highest Welfare when they all require animals to die? Only human comfort, NONE protect the actual animals. The most humane, ethical, and honest Webster-defined "welfare" is NOT exploiting animals - not using, not wearing, not eating, not killing - animals. The only meaningful position is vegan, everything else is just how humans euphemize animals' required suffering and violent deaths: no human exploits animals because they honestly believe that NOT exploiting animals is UNethical or INhumane.

Thanksgiving dinner’s sad and thankless
Christmas dinner’s dark and blue
When you stop and try to see it
From the turkey’s point of view.Sunday dinner isn’t sunny
Easter feasts are just bad luck
When you see it from the viewpoint
Of a chicken or a duck.Oh how I once loved tuna salad
Pork and lobsters, lamb chops too
‘Til I stopped and looked at dinner
From the dinner’s point of view.

One Day of Sunshine

Source Indraloka Animal Sanctuary: Harika experiencing the first gentle touch of her life
Source Stories from Indraloka Animal Sanctuary
By Indra Lahiri
They lay helplessly before us, innocent babies. It was clear that they had suffered greatly in their short lives. Covered in open wounds and excrement, malnourished, with misery in their eyes, they were too weak to stand.
The tiniest of the three cried in pain. Instinctively, I scooped her up and cradled her close to my heart. Her panicked heartbeat slowed to match my own. I tried to convey, with my eyes, that she was safe now—that she was loved. She turned her head to mine, her gentle brown eyes filled with wonderment. This might have been the first loving touch she experienced in her life. Harika, we named her- Sanskrit for “beloved of Indra”.
Gently, I touched the huge wound on this tiny girl’s neck. She cocked her head to the left ever so slightly, seeming to be aware that I was sorry for her pain. I moved my hands slowly over her body, assessing the damage. At each wound or bruise I stopped and said a silent prayer. Her eyes held mine and she nodded her head minutely each time. I felt gently along the splayed legs that would not hold her. I touched her yellowed skin, most likely jaundiced due to blood loss. I felt her keel bone through her skinny little frame.
Then I just hugged her close to my heart again, feeling her tiny heart beat against mine while I prayed for all those beautiful babies that never make it out… all those turkeys who suffer each day of their short lives. Forty-five million innocent babies, every Thanksgiving, are raised in unspeakable conditions, never to hear a kind word or feel a gentle touch… never to experience sunlight on their feathers, fresh air, or grass and soil beneath them.
But this one, this one made it out. How or why, I don’t know. Fairly often, we get these rescues, lucky ones who somehow escape and wind up where good, caring people find them and bring them to us. I imagined she fell off of a truck- it would explain her splayed legs- but who knows? Maybe she was dropped as she was being packed into a crate for transport. Maybe she was asleep and, looking as she does, was mistaken for dead and thrown in the trash.
It didn’t matter. All that mattered in that moment were those eyes looking into mine with what I can only describe as trust, and that little heartbeat against mine. I can never explain this feeling in words- this moment when everything disappears and all that is left is me and a little life depending on me.
What could I ever have done to receive such blessings? Such a miracle as this perfect, perfect little child gifting me with her trust, when nothing and no one in her short life ever gave her reason to feel anything but fear?
I began to spin dreams for her, speaking to her of a long life ahead. Days of lolling in the sunshine and playing with other turkeys. Years of healthy meals and a clean, warm place to sleep. Of humans who would hold her in their laps and pet her as we do a beloved cat, listening to her soft purrs and smiling at her joy. Together, we dreamed of the beautiful life before her. Her eyes never left mine. I believed she was spellbound, and as hopeful as I.
Only a day or two in, we noticed that her leg was getting worse instead of better. She seemed to be in more pain when we tried to give her physical therapy, or even place her in a sling. The pain medication may have helped a bit, but it was clear that she was far from pain-free. Her brother, Habibah (Swahili for beloved), was also faring poorly. We decided to consult with the avian experts at an esteemed veterinary hospital. The third baby, Hadaaya (beloved in Arabic), seemed to be doing better, happily, so we decided to leave her at home at the sanctuary.
Their appointment was on Wednesday, the sixth day we had them. So, on Tuesday, despite the strict quarantine under which we place all new residents, we took the three babies outside, in an area far from any other birds. One by one, I felt them relax in my arms as they felt sunlight on their backs, most likely for the first time. I set them on the grass and smiled, listening to their delighted coos and purrs. The color on their heads and necks turned red and blue- a visible way for them to express their joy (sort of like a human smiling).
With me was a woman with a huge heart. She was new to farm animal rescue, and she was appalled. “Who would do this to them?” she kept asking. Everyone, I explained, just about everyone– everyone who ever eats turkey, everyone who knows what they go through and does not demand that it stop, everyone who says, “I can’t think about that,” and turns away from suffering. I told her about how most animals used by the food industry are routinely raised. She was shocked, and kept repeating, “People need to know. If they knew, they’d make it illegal. They wouldn’t support it.”
So here I am, telling all who will listen. This is happening, and no one will stop it if we don’t. Please, please, please, for the babies’ sake, please help us stop this. This is wrong. No one should suffer like this.
It was such a miracle that these three got out alive, somehow, and were in the sunshine with people who loved them, their whole lives stretched out before them. They were happy. They were free. They were beloved and they felt it.
If only for that moment.
At the hospital, we learned that Harika and Habibah were too far gone. Their pain would only grow, and there was no hope of fixing their legs. Given that theses types of turkeys grow to be very large, we knew their problems would only become worse. I have often thought that the heart of sanctuary work is to be selfless enough to give them a good death. So, although it pained us greatly, we made the choice that was best for them.
Hadaaya, the third baby bird, is continuing her recovery at the sanctuary, with lots of TLC. In the absence of her siblings, she has lots of toys and human attention. Just as soon as her quarantine is complete, she will join another flock of baby birds we rescued recently. Her days will be filled with all of the freedoms and pleasures Harika and I dreamed of together, and Harika and Habibah’s spirits will live on through her, and in our hearts.
One day of sunshine was all I could give them- my beloved Harika and her sweet brother Habibah.
Six days of love and one day of sunshine. And I trust that was enough.

Have a Heart for Animals

News release
Campaigners uncover cruel and futile animal experiments inside top London universities
Scores of campaigners and students (came) together on Friday 2 December to protest the use of animals in experiments at one of the UK’s leading universities – University College London (UCL). The university – ranked to be 7th in the world [1] – is the third largest user of animals in the UK and used over 202,000 animals there last year alone [2]. At the launch of its Campus without Cruelty campaign in the capital city, Animal Justice Project [3] has uncovered what it calls ‘scientifically-flawed, cruel and futile’ experiments carried out at London universities.
Participants will hold hundreds of paper hearts and ask UCL to ‘have a heart for animals’ inside their labs. As part of an ongoing probe into animal experiments on university campuses, Animal Justice Project sent Freedom of Information requests to 110 universities across Britain and uncovered that over half a million animals were experimented on in London universities last year alone. Making the capital a hotbed of animal research.
Some shocking examples include pigs at the Royal Veterinary College being given liver failure lasting over 19 hours [4] in a study on paracetamol, despite the fact that their side-effects are already well known. In the study, the animals died slowly and painfully whilst their major organs shut down. Dr. Andre Menache, Animal Justice Project Science Advisor, states: “Studies of this nature offer no predictive value for humans due to species differences between pigs and people”.

AIWS/Lex Kartane
In an experiment at UCL, gerbils were anesthetised and had electrodes inserted into their brains so researchers could record brain activity in response to different sounds [5]. No mention is made in the paper, published in The Journal of Neuroscience, as to how this experiment could benefit humans or non-human animals. Nor do researchers inform the reader that the animals were killed at the end of the study. At the same university, sixteen rabbits were used as ‘living test tubes’ – having had metal rods implanted into their leg bones to study titanium implants. The authors of the study concluded that rabbits be considered as the ‘gold standard’ to evaluate implantation [6]. Eleven macaques were hooked up to computers by electrodes in their limbs, and the animals were anesthetised for brain recordings [7]. Two of the monkeys were subsequently killed so that their brains could be studied. Again, the authors provide no information as to how this study could apply to humans. Ironically, the research received financial support from the UK National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animals in Research. At Kings College London (KCL) – the fifth largest user of animals in the country – a new experimental drug was tested on rats and marmoset monkeys for possible use in human patients [8]. Since neither rats nor monkeys suffer from Parkinson’s disease naturally, toxic brain chemicals were injected into the animals to produce symptoms that superficially resemble Parkinson’s disease. The authors stated that the new treatment was not very effective and caused disturbing side effects (eg vomiting). Menache states: “This study is an example to illustrate how a potentially useful treatment for humans is thrown away on the basis of misleading animal experiments”. In another study at KCL, marmoset monkeys were used to study Parkinson’s [10]. Toxic brain chemicals were injected into the animals to produce symptoms that superficially resemble the disease. The animals suffered muscle tremors, loss of vocalisations, and rigid and abnormal postures. Again, these primates do not suffer naturally from the condition, yet researchers nevertheless used them as an experimental ‘model’. Animal Justice Project has published a short report on why primates do not make good ‘models’ in human medicine research [9].

AIWS/Lex Kartane
Of the 2.08 million experiments conducted on animals last year (not including the 2.06 million experiments to produce or breed genetically altered animals who were not used in further experiments), 53 per cent (1.1 million experiments) were in the area of ‘basic research’ [11]. This curiosity-driven research does not need to produce a result. The large amount of curiosity-driven research being carried out at universities like those in London would explain why some animal researchers can achieve long careers by experimenting on animals without any clinical application that could somehow justify all the animal suffering and public money wasted.
According to the latest Government figures, animal experiments at universities account for just less than half of all animal experiments carried out in the UK [11]. Nationally, UCL, KCL and Imperial College London come in third, fifth and sixth, as the worst offenders – totaling almost 500,000 between them last year.
Animal Justice Project Spokesperson, Claire Palmer, states: “The Animal Justice Project event at UCL gives students (and campaigners) the ability to make their voices heard against the atrocities that are occurring to animals – day in, and day out – inside UCL and other London universities. Our Campus without Cruelty campaign aims to empower students to turn away from animal-based studies, and choose instead more progressive and humane methods. London prides itself in being a modern, innovative city, yet here we have, thousands of animal experiments dying each year in scientifically-flawed, cruel and futile research”.
Dr Andre Menache, Animal Justice Project Science Advisor, states: “What the London University studies have all of the above have in common is a culture of scientific curiosity that lacks compassion. Researchers routinely refer to the animals as ‘material’ and omit to mention the fact that the animals were killed at the end of the study. Some researchers refer to their animal subjects as ‘purpose bred’ for laboratory experiments, suggesting that they have no other purpose in life”.
Animal Justice Project, founded in 2014, is an international organisation based in the UK and the United States, working to raise awareness for the plight of animals in laboratories across the world.

No Matter How ‘Humane’, Eating Animals Means Treating Them Like Trash
Source Free From Harm
By Ashley Capps

“Found in the dumpster at the live auction. Yes, in the dumpster. Mangled between other bodies and trash, covered in blood and feces. We took them out of there. The ones that we could. We washed their bodies and gave them a few moments of love which they never received in life. It’s unfathomable to think that we could ever just throw animals into the trash, as if that’s what they are, trash.” – Mikey D., facebook post, 5/11/2016
When we who have access to plant-based foods and the lands to grow them persist in farming living beings and consuming their corpses and reproductive secretions; when we forcibly breed billions of sentient individuals into existence for the sole purpose of sending them, in their infancy or youth, to a slaughterhouse, a.k.a abattoir, from the french abattre, to put an end to, to beat down—
When there exists such a thing as a house for putting an end to, a house for beating down; and when we have erected sufficient of these to effect the extinguishment of tens of billions of vulnerable beings annually, so to squeeze their innards and dismembered parts into shining packets of cellophane where the very blood of the beaten animals still pools in the plastic—
And all this carnage, not because we must, but simply because we can—
when a slaughterhouse exists not because it must, but simply because it can—
then we are literally saying that the lives of these animals are as garbage to us.

you have the power to change the world
and the world needs changing.
so we ask of you to hear the voices of those unable to speak, enter ballot boxes. or march on city streets.
our citizens of fur, feather, fins, claws, paws, scales…those who slither, fly, leap, stalk, crawl., just like us, they want to make a living for those they love and for themselves, in peace.
please hear the cries of the enslaved, hidden, tormented, hunted.
as you sit and digest the vast and unexplored implications of this new position you worked so hard to attain, can you see the world as a vast city of many beautiful life forms. can you think of your son barron and the world you wish him to grow up in.
a legacy of compassion and hope can be yours to achieve, if you open your heart and mind to the magic garden our earth was meant to be.
so we ask you, please step up and work with us. be a part of restoring our earth to the glorious gift that it is. time and the tides of sorrow have overtaken far too many.

Thanksgiving is… quite the holiday.
Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States, and the second Monday of October in Canada. North America ritually and enthusiastically celebrates the official holiday for ‘giving thanks’ by supporting the exploitation, confinement and slaughter of the native, majestic bird that has been bred into a mutated creature of mutation and misery. WTF North America!!!
Butterball, the world’s leading turkey producer (breeds, ‘raises’ and slaughters hundreds of millions of turkeys) has been caught abusing and neglecting their birds in several facilities, year after year! 😡 http://butterballabuse.com/

Vegan who gave water to pigs headed for slaughter finds it ‘unfathomable’ she was charged

Hannah Gregus
By Adam Carter, CBC News
A Toronto woman facing mischief charges for giving water to pigs on a truck headed to slaughter used the witness box like a pulpit in court today, with her testimony almost completely centring on her beliefs that everyone should be vegan and an activist.
Anita Krajnc, 49, appeared in a Burlington, Ont., courtroom as her trial resumed in front of a judge alone for the third day.
The animal rights activist is charged with mischief and faces jail time or a maximum $5,000 fine for providing water through the narrow openings of a metal trailer to the pigs as they were headed to Fearman’s Pork Inc. in Burlington on June 22, 2015.
“I just find it unfathomable that someone would be charged for giving thirsty animals water,” she said, while also testifying that she had no idea she could be charged for what she was doing.
“In the three years we’ve given water to pigs, police have been present, so we took that as an endorsement.”
‘I think it’s child abuse to give bacon to children.’
– Anita Krajnc, animal rights activist
Krajnc is part of the group Toronto Pig Save, which regularly holds vigils outside the pork processing plant. Krajnc has said the pigs were overheated and severely dehydrated.
When the trial was last in session in August, an animal welfare expert testified the animals appeared to be in “severe distress” from the heat inside the trailer — but because she hadn’t examined them, she couldn’t say for sure.
Outside the courthouse, Krajnc told CBC News that testifying gave her an opportunity to spread her message.
“The pig trial has turned around from being a trial about one woman giving water to pigs to really putting animal agriculture on trial for what it does to animals, what it does to the environment, and what it does to people’s health and what it does to our conscience,” she said.
‘I think they’re better than people’
In many ways, Monday’s session was less about Krajnc’s charges specifically, and more about the meat industry and the ethics surrounding it. The defence and the Crown spent roughly 15 minutes talking about the incident itself, while the rest of the day centred on Krajnc’s personal beliefs.
The court did not qualify her as an expert in any field, but she was still allowed to present evidence about climate change, the agriculture industry, and even how many pigs were slaughtered inside Fearman’s on an annual basis. Krajnc testified she has a PhD in political science and did a case study on climate change.
Krajnc mentioned Leo Tolstoy and Gandhi several times, and referred to Pastor Martin Niemoeller’s poem about the way German intellectuals acted following the Nazis’ rise to power before the Second World War, comparing that to how humans treat animals.
“I think they’re better than people, they’re more noble,” Krajnc said about pigs.
At one point, she mentioned a 2015 report from the World Health Organization that looked at the evidence about whether processed meat and red meat cause cancer, calling bacon a “carcinogen.” The WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer said that eating processed meat can cause cancer.
“If you wouldn’t give a cigarette to a child, why would you give bacon to a child?” Krajnc testified. “I think it’s child abuse to give bacon to children.”
Squeals disturb some in court
On Monday, the defence showed several videos the group has shot during its vigils, showing pigs squealing and climbing on each other in tight confines.
The lawyers also showed videos shot from inside slaughterhouses, showing pigs being gassed, prodded with electrodes and loaded unconscious on conveyor belts on the way to slaughter.
Several people inside the courtroom covered their ears and eyes when faced with the sounds of the pigs squealing. Some people wiped away tears.
Jeffrey Veldjesgraaf, the truck’s driver, testified in August that it wasn’t unusual for Krajnc and other animal rights activists to offer water to the pigs, and said Fearman’s Pork Inc. has never turned away the animals he hauls there because of it.
During cross-examination, Veldjesgraaf said the animals are given water before and after they’re loaded onto the trucks, but not during transit.
Court also watched video of the 2015 incident, in which Krajnc is seen yelling to the truck driver, “Have some compassion, have some compassion!”
Krajnc testified Monday that she offered the driver water after she had given water to the pigs, but he refused.
Animal rights activists planned to hold a demonstration at a Vancouver courthouse today calling on the courts to drop Krajnc’s charges.
“Any sane person can see that allowing pigs to suffer, rather than relieving their suffering, is what should be the crime,” said demonstration organizer Meghan Beattie in a statement. “This case is shining a spotlight on the failure of our animal agriculture system to recognize that animals are thinking, feeling individuals, not inanimate property.”
Krajnc’s trial is due to continue on Nov. 1.
CBC News reporter Adam Carter reported live from the courtroom Monday. You can read a recap of his live blog HERE.

On trying to be vegan

Wikimedia Commons
Source There’s an Elephant in the Room blog
I’ve seen it so often, ‘I’m trying to go vegan but I’m not there yet’. When I read or hear that, it tells me that the author simply doesn’t ‘get it’ …. yet. It tells me that I need to try harder to find what it is that the author doesn’t yet know about the horrors that our non vegan consumer choices unavoidably cause, I have to find a way to reach them.
Now before that sparks off a defensive retaliation, please don’t get me wrong – I have never made a secret of the fact that it took me years, decades, to ‘get it’ so that in itself is not the issue. Until the penny finally dropped for me I had hardly even heard about veganism, except as a word without definition, or at best, a word with a whole host of preconceptions. I thought it was some weird abstemious diet for people who were ultra-strict vegetarians. It actually made no sense to me whatsoever. Why would anyone actually want to eat stuff that tasted like sawdust, even if it was healthy? I even had my doubts about the health aspect – it was all just a mystery. I thought veganism was a diet. I thought it was about humans. I was ‘mostly’ vegetarian so ‘obviously’ I was a caring consumer, or that’s what I told myself repeatedly.
Did I actually know any vegans? I don’t think so, but if I did, and if by some chance they were reading this, I’d like to tell them something. I wish with all my heart that they had told me the truth. I wish that they had slapped me – metaphorically or in reality – really hard and explained to me what veganism actually is. I wish they’d told me that veganism is a lived ethic that utterly rejects unnecessary use of other individuals to gratify the indulgence of our sad, pathetic species. I wish they’d pointed out that violence is part and parcel of everything we do when we are not vegan. I wish they had swept away my preconceptions and given me the gift of truth. Gift? Yes, when I finally found someone to explain veganism to me, it was truly a gift and one beyond price.
Veganism’s not meant to be a struggle. It’s not meant to be difficult. It’s a release. It’s an escape. It’s a joy. A sense of freedom and kinship. Liberation is a word I seldom use, because it’s seldom warranted. However becoming vegan is a liberation for each of us. It liberates us from the shackles of ignorance and conscience. It liberates us from our unending efforts to convince others – and more significantly ourselves – about how much we ‘love’ those gentle, innocent ones who are being condemned for our pretentious self indulgence. Becoming vegan saves us from the futile struggle that we face as we repeatedly turn over and redefine the word ‘humane’ to mean anything we want it to mean. Becoming vegan frees us from the endless trials of fictionalising and re-scripting our use of others in our vain attempts to avoid seeming like monsters even in our own eyes.
On the day we really ‘get it ‘, on the day we finally understand that other individuals are not ours to use; that we have absolutely no right to perpetrate the horrors of our self destructive and needless abuse on their trusting innocence, we cannot stop harming them fast enough. Our days of ‘trying’ are over. And they’re over – not because we are being judged by anyone, not because we are having anyone’s viewpoint ‘forced’ on us. Our days of ‘trying’ are over because our own sense of decency stands up and asserts itself – loudly. Once we see and recognise the truth for what it is, there is no going back.
Do vegans ‘judge’ people? Maybe, I don’t know about what others think in the privacy of their thoughts. However, only those whose opinions we value have the power to hurt us, and when I look back at the dark time in my life before I was vegan, there is someone that I definitely judge. There is someone whose behaviour disappoints me deeply, wounds me to the point of grief. That person is myself.
Judge yourself. And be vegan.

We’ve Become Disconnected
Source YouTube, The Vegan Activist
Most people live their lives turning their backs on things too difficult to face. Ignoring what hurts you eventually becomes a habit- the natural things to do. If we only allow ourselves to see what we want to see, we just end up clouding our visions more and more, until eventually we become so blind to the horrible truths around us, that we just stop caring. We’ve lost our humanity.

The Hardest Part About Being Vegan
Source YouTube , The Vegan Activist
The real difficulty in being Vegan doesn’t involve food. The hardest part about being Vegan is coming face to face with the darker side of humanity and trying to remain hopeful. It’s trying to understand why otherwise good and caring people continue to participate in needless violence against animals – just for the sake of their pleasure or convenience.

A Plea To Feminists Who Are Vegetarian But Who Still Consume Dairy or Eggs
Source Animal Rights: The Abolitionist Approach
By Gary L. Francione
Dairy products represent a fundamental violation of the rights of nonhumans. Dairy is not morally distinguishable from meat.
Indeed, dairy represents a violation of rights that should be of great concern to feminists:
Cows are repeatedly and forcibly impregnated using a device called the “rape rack.”
Their babies are taken from them immediately after birth (and a day or two or three later in “happy” farms) to stop the calves from taking milk. Male calves are sold for veal. Females become part of the dairy industry. Cows are wonderful mothers who grieve the loss of their babies. Anyone who has observed the separation of cows from their calves knows that it involves horrible, prolonged suffering on the part of mother and baby.
Cows routinely suffer mastitis (inflammation of the mammary gland and udder tissue), a very painful condition, from repeated contact with the milking machine.
Dairy cows end up in the same slaughterhouses as their “meat” counterparts.
Dairy represents a commodification of the reproductive process of the cow and her relationship with her baby. It represents violence that should be of concern to us all, including, and particularly, those who claim to be feminists.
Eggs raise a similar concern in that hens, who are wonderful mothers, never get to see or to interact with their chicks.
Breeders are confined in automated sheds where males and females mate although artificial insemination of poultry is also used. Eggs are collected and sent to hatcheries, where males, who cannot lay eggs and are not suitable for meat, are killed by being ground up, gassed, or suffocated as soon as they are sexed.
The females are sent at a day or two of age to grow-out farms where they are raised in cages or in a floored rearing facility. They never interact with their mothers.
Egg-laying hens spent no more than two years in the hell of a battery (conventional or “enriched”), or of a “cage-free” or “free-range” barn, until they are “spent” and slaughtered. They are periodically starved to maximize production. They are debeaked and declawed.
Again, the female’s reproductive system is commodified and manipulated, and her relationship with her chicks is destroyed.
If you are feminist vegetarian but you are still consuming dairy or eating eggs, you are drawing an arbitrary line between humans and nonhumans.
And this is precisely what speciesism is.
**********
If you are not vegan, please go vegan. Veganism is about nonviolence. First and foremost, it’s about nonviolence to other sentient beings. But it’s also about nonviolence to the earth and nonviolence to yourself.
If animals matter morally, veganism is not an option — it is a necessity. Anything that claims to be an animal rights movement must make clear that veganism is a moral imperative.
Embracing veganism as a moral imperative and advocating for veganism as a moral imperative are, along with caring for nonhuman refugees, the most important acts of activism that you can undertake.
The World is Vegan! If you want it.
