‘Family Dairy Farms’ Destroy Families: My Dairy Tour

The town of Asheville, North Carolina, has been called the “Progressive Mecca of the South”. And while it is home to a lot of liberal-minded people and activists, there’s one form of oppression that many of the most left-leaning advocates still happily support and celebrate, and that is animal exploitation and slaughter.

Sure, Asheville has a large vegan community and lots of vegan-friendly restaurants, but, as Free from Harm has previously written, it is also a hotbed for the humane animal farming myth. The town’s cafés, restaurants and farmer’s markets regularly boast of their “ethical meat” and milk and cheese from “happy cows” on “family farms.”

I recently had occasion to visit one such celebrated “family dairy farm,” Maple View Farm, just outside of Chapel Hill, NC. Maple View supplies many local businesses in the Triangle area, and it also supplies the Asheville milk delivery company, Farm to Home. The Farm to Home “milk man” describes his job of delivering this milk as doing something “ethically” and with “integrity.”

As I walked through this esteemed family dairy that is favorably known in the community, I was astonished by what I saw and heard. In the dairy industry, female cows must be lactating to produce milk. That means that they are forcefully impregnated over and over through artificial insemination, without their consent, so they will give birth and begin lactating at optimal yields. Their bodies are pushed through this stressful and wearing cycle every year so that they will produce as much breast milk as possible. I learned that on this farm, mother cows are slaughtered after several years once their milk production declines. This is true of most cows in the dairy industry, who are killed at only a fraction of their natural lifespan when their output slows down and they become less profitable.

In addition to this tragedy, once cows used for dairy give birth, their babies are taken away from them. The farmer himself told me that the babies on his farm do not once drink the milk straight from their mothers’ udders, and never will. Instead, they receive their first life-giving fluids from a human hand and plastic bottle.

Those poor babies – it’s heartbreaking. I brought up my 3 kids vegetarian from birth. My youngest and I went vegan together when she was 16, but she soon went back to eating eggs, cheese, butter and yoghurts. And now, in her 30s, is eating meat. Not only is she telling me a vegan diet is unhealthy, and actually kills more animals in the plant-growing process than animal product farming, but she actually blames me for bringing her up veggie (though I always let her make her own decisions) and claims it has caused her health problems. I know better than to try to get her to change her mind, but if I attempt to present her facts to defend my own position which she is determined to undermine, she gets furiously angry with me. I guess consumers of animal products will always find arguments to justify their decisions:(

Yes, there is a whole camp of former vegans who were declared clinically dead and then miraculously resuscitated back to life with a porkchop. Sorry, but I have very little tolerance for this skewed way of thinking, which is only an exercise in denial. Look, as everyone knows, too much of anything, and too little of another, can both be detrimental and cause health problems. The bottom line is that veg*ism has already been proven and scientifically established as nutritious, healthy, and even instrumental in lowering the risk of certain cancers, negative health conditions, and heart disease, which is pretty much the number one cause of death in the US.

It sounds to me as if you taught her compassion and empathy while feeding her nutritious food; it’s not as if you forced her to drink, smoke, and play with used needles. Pat yourself on the back for doing an awesome job. I’m sure she is an otherwise lovely person with excellent qualities, but in this, she is wrong. I actually have more respect for those who claim to just like meat too much to give it up rather than make up the tired “I-have-poor-health-and-am-on-the-verge-of-death-because-I-don’t-eat-months’-old-blood-and-tendons-and-flesh-from-tortured-and-diseased-animals” excuse. Just, you know, bite me.

You are correct, though – it’s just an excuse.

      Thanks, hon. ❤
