SOURCE NEAVS

Many women are shocked to learn their hormone replacement therapy (HRT) medication is made from a pregnant horse’s urine. This is the case for many popular HRT drugs from the pharmaceutical giant Pfizer such as Premarin, Duavee, Prempro, and Premphase – but their labeling isn’t telling you!

These prescriptions are labelled on the bottle simply as “conjugated estrogens,” without identifying the source. Sadly, to collect their estrogen-rich urine, mares are turned into breeding machines for most of their lives. They are confined in tiny stalls without free access to water, and attached to urine collection bags that cause painful chafing. Their newborn foals are typically sent to slaughter or wait their turn to replace their “spent” mothers.

Drugs made from the urine of pregnant horses generate more than $1 billion in sales for Pfizer every year. Please ask Pfizer CEO Ian Read to:

1.Label the ingredients on the bottle of their equine-based HRT drugs as coming from pregnant mare urine

2.End the needless production of PMU drugs and replace them with plant-based or synthetic HRTs

It’s unacceptable for women to not know what they are putting in their bodies, especially because plant-based and synthetic HRTs – with comparable benefits and risks to equine-based drugs – are readily available. It is equally unacceptable that Pfizer continues to market a completely unnecessary product that causes so much suffering and is a waste of animal lives.

i am a woman of a “certain age”
and this animal exploitation
makes me beyond enraged.
NO animals are here to
cure our ills,
soothe our pains
or be tested for
our pills.
there are natural
plant remedies
for
menopause.
this horse abuse
should be
outlawed!!!!

Friends of mine adopted two tiny Premarin foals. When they arrived at their new homes, the babies were so young, they didn’t know how to eat, but had to be bottle fed. Thank goodness they were safe, however. I grieve for their mothers! I’d rather have hot flashes than use Premarin or its ilk!!!

In a kinda-related story but not really:

Our elder cat Bubba suffers from arthritis. When discussing treatment options with the vet, Jen was told about a drug called Adequan. It’s supposed to work wonders, but it’s made using cow tracheas.

When I wrote about the drug and the dilemma posed as to whether or not to use it, many people said to use it since the cows are being slaughtered anyway.

But do they really think cow tracheas are gathered at the slaughterhouse and sent to the pharmaceutical company to make drugs?

We have a long way to go to convince people that animal welfare shouldn’t be thrown out the window when it involves a drug I need or want.

That is a challenge, I suspect I have no good answer. My activist side says don’t use the medicine, even if the animals are being slaughtered anyway. I believe no animal should be slaughtered, so using that example I would not use it. If nobody used it, there would be no market for it. They would still be slaughtered but not for medicine, so that would be one step in the compassionate direction. Then they would not be slaughtered for leather, and eventually, for food.

But, what about Bubba? He’s a part of your family, and you want what is best for him, and any time you disregard something he needs, it’s a smack in the face of the compassion I know you have.

So that’s all I can offer It is a difficult position to be in. I wish I had a good answer, but I unfortunately don’t know what I’d do except look for other treatment options. I believe nobody should have the right to massacre the animals for anything, in which case the pharma people would come up with something else, but then THEY would probably use animals, too..

Sorry that wasn’t very helpful, let me know what you decide.

It helps more than you know. At least you understand my dilemma. Sadly, most of my readers just said to use the medicine, cows be damned.

That is sad. But I think people have been basically brainwashed to accept animal cruelty. I bet most of them don’t know anything about the industry and what it does and how horrifically treated the animals are.:( I am glad that you have a conflict, it proves your compassion. (I am not GLADGLAD, but I think you know what I mean.) Let me know if I can do anything.
