Sandy police reprimand owners for picture of ‘puppy piñata’

SANDY — A picture posted as a joke on Facebook has caused animal advocates a lot of concern, and they said that it should not be allowed.
The picture shows what looks like a small dog hanging from a ceiling with someone posing like they’re hitting it with a stick. The caption reads: “What we do for fun — puppy piñata lmao.”
The Humane Society of Utah saw the picture online, and forwarded it to the Sandy Police department as a call for action.
“When officers went out there, there were no injuries to the dog,” said Sandy Police Sgt. Jon Arnold.
Arnold said the dog was wearing a harness, and was not hanging by its collar.
“It’s a harness that would normally be attached to a leash,” Arnold said. “That way they can control their dogs on the leash rather than the collar.”
Arnold said that since the picture was a joke, and the dog was uninjured in the prank, no charges will be filed.
“Unfortunately, there are some things that individuals find funny that other people don’t,” Arnold said.
Arnold said Sandy Police officers had a long discussion with the dog’s owners about how posting pictures depicting animal cruelty could cause alarm for people who didn’t know it was a joke.
“We talked to them about the perception of individuals looking at a picture labeled ‘puppy piñata’ [and how they’re] probably thinking that you’re injuring this animal,” Arnold said.
The Humane Society of Utah still condemns the picture saying people shouldn’t promote violence against animals, even if they’re just kidding.
“The sad truth of it is that there is enough animal abuse that is going on anyway,” said Humane Society of Utah representative Carl Arky. “We don’t need to encourage it.”

Glad their not my neighbors. I’m sure that puppy did not enjoy being hung period whether it was from halter or collar. Hanging by the halter puts pressure against the joints that are still forming and could cause damage. I’m sure the puppy was quite scared during this abuse. I am very concerned for the safety of that puppy. I hope the visit from the police gave these idiots an education that they already should have instilled in them. I’m sure the Sandy PD had better things to do that day than to try to talk common sense into senseless individuals. Yuck, yuck guys, abuse is always abuse and never funny.

I completely agree, thanks, Morgan. It baffles me how anyone could even conceive that this would be humorous and then to take a picture to brag – ? I am scared for the puppy, too. This was not funny whatsoever and would not be tolerated if done to a human. I hope the police visit did some good,too.

Oh wow well thank you officers for not charging them. Lets wait until these F-tards actually hang a dog by the neck and then arrest them. Maybe. I dont expect anything mroe from cops. They just found a scum bag with their dog in a crate attached to a trailer hitch on 95 south. going 75 mpg exhaust fumes, danger. But he lets do nothing. The dog was unharmed. Screw cops. I despise them as much as these animal abusing scum bags

I hit the ‘yes’ toggle and proceeded to read the comment thread. Just about everyone commenting needs to be either spayed or neutered as much as POS using that poor dog as a pinata. The dog is definitely traumatize and will show emotional and behavioral issues. I have two dogs who were abandoned; they both have issues I cannot pinpoint what the result was from; and my dog whom I adopted from a shelter and had to PTS him last October. He developed degenerative myelopathy; got him wheelchair and promised myself and him I would not rob him of his dignity. He lost control of peeing first, I brushed it aside still looking for a cure (which there is none), but then it escalated and he lost control of his bowel movements. It killed me but I had to do what I did. when I adopted him the shelter said he was 7 or 8 and that was in 2005. He had severe issues with food, so I assumed food was probably used as reward and punishment. I cannot imagine what this poor puppy goes through if they think hanging him up is funny.

Thank you so much for your input. I am SO sorry about your dog; you did everything possible. It must have been an agonizing experience and choice, but it is completely understandable. You exhausted all possible avenues and then you did the gentle thing and let him go. Again, I am so sorry. You were and are a wonderful guardian.
I agree that this puppy will be traumatized; I cannot believe that the bastards were allowed to keep him. Next time they won’t use a harness. They are nothing but cruel degenerates.

What a pack of assholes! I do not find this even remotely funny. I wonder how they would feel if someone hung a baby pretending to it was a “baby pinata” I would be everyone would be up in arms about it.
