PETS: Independence Day fireworks cause panic in animals

If you read my blog on a regular basis, you’re familiar with my dog Skippy: “the best dog in the universe.”

Skippy’s no longer with us, but when he was alive, he had a curious habit. Whenever an ambulance or fire truck passed nearby with siren wailing, Skippy would throw  his head back and let out the most blood-curdling howl.

I mention this, because it’s an example of how sensitive our furry friends are to sounds. Which brings me to the 4th of July.

In the city I live in, fireworks are illegal. But there are always some knuckleheads in my neighborhood who start setting off firecrackers early in the day and continue into the night when the beer is flowing freely.  I’ve already heard some really loud ones.

The loud noises panic animals and they will jump over or dig down under fences in a frantic effort to escape the noises. Cats are even more high strung and can get into even more trouble.

According to a news release, 306 dead animals were picked up by animal control officers throughout Riverside County on July 5, 2012.

Over at our house, we don’t have that problem. We gather the critters (two dogs and a cat) in the bedroom, close the door, put on “Yankee Doodle Dandy” with James Cagney (a holiday tradition) and we’re set.

If you’re planning to be out for the night, just make sure to confine your dogs and cats. Click here to see some tips from the folks at the Riverside County  Department of  Animal Services.

And be sure to have a fabulous 4th.

I bring my dogs to the fireworks show and they LOVE it.

Every time there is a big boom give your dog an extra special treat. They associate the noise with reward. My dogs are vegetarian and they get american cheese for treats. We all have a great time. Best to start with this procedure when they are pups…but any time is good.

    Happy 4th.

Thanks for the info, Duane, that’s great they enjoy it so much! I am glad they are vegetarian, and I was just reading about vegan dogs this morning. Fascinating!

God dame America, it weapons and it allies and terrorists!. Franciscan monks-beheaded-in-syria. They were of the Franciscan convent of Ghassanieh, Syria, the three men beheaded by the Front to Nusra Front, after a summary trial in which they were accused of “being in the pay of the regime.” This was revealed by Radio France International, which broadcasts the video of the group of jihadists who shows the execution. The story, however, had begun a few days ago when Father Pizzaballa, custodian of the Holy Land, bringing the words of its regional minister of Syria, father Halim Noujaim, had claimed the presence of a group of rebels who, by force, had entered the convent of Ghassanieh. The religious building was looted and destroyed appeared in the press and also the name of his father Francois, a hermit who had sought refuge in a Catholic convent community and who was killed during the attack of the rebels. Now would seem rather different news reported today by the French radio that has spread the news of the kidnapping by the jihadists of three religious, including father Francois (Francis Mourad), which was made a summary trial, after that of an agenda of one of the monks had been found the phone number of a soldier, and then perform the execution. The religious were also accused of having favored the trafficking of arms and ammunition on behalf of the regime.

Reblogged this on Carinas space and commented:
I have one of each – the senior dog is terrified of fireworks while the younger dog doesn’t mind much at all. Imo, fireworks are a nuisance for both people and animals.

That’s so interesting, I always assumed all dogs were afraid until Duane above said his were not. Thanks so much, Wolf is my Soul, for your comments and for sharing.
