SAMPLE LETTER

Dear Walmart Representative,

I was shocked to learn that Walmart sells live Siamese Fighting Fish, and I am respectfully requesting you discontinue. Please allow me to elaborate. Animals are sentient creatures with the capacity to experience complex emotions; being subjected to noisy environments, loud noises, bright lights, and continuous interference from unconcerned and curious consumers causes untold suffering, including confusion, pain, and fear.  Furthermore, these fish are held in very small plastic containers with barely enough water to cover them and no oxygenation or temperature control.

Every year, countless people give in to temptation and purchase wild or exotic animals on a whim as “pets”, but very few have the knowledge required to meet the animals’ specialized husbandry needs or the inclination to commit to the years-long responsibility of caring for them. Peddled as cheap trinkets, confined to small “habitats”, roughly handled, fed improper diets, and forgotten when the novelty wears off, these animals are doomed from the moment that they are born on farms where profit dictates actions.

With so many harmless products to offer consumers, Walmart could make a profit without causing suffering, but as long as you continue to unnecessarily capitalize on the suffering of animals, I will not financially support you and will share this alert by informing family, friends, and members of online communities.

Please make both the ethical and financially-responsible decision to discontinue selling Siamese Fighting Fish immediately: join an increasing body of corporations who are listening to a concerned and attentive consumer population who refuse to be complicit in the inherently cruel industry of animal commerce.

Thank you for taking the time to read this important appeal.

NAME

bettas or siamese fighting fish
are often abused,
made to fight each other,
so cruelly misused.
to sell them is to perhaps
resign them to a fate.
that you, yourselves,
would surely hate!!!

*I usually agree with what you have to say. However, this one is ridiculous. * *Many places sell these fish, not just Walmart. They are in small containers, because they prefer it and live in small territories in the wild.* *Furthermore, they are not “stolen” from the wild. The ones used for pets are farm raised. Also, they do not need ai\erated water like other species. Otherwise, they would have it, as the others do in the stores. **Although, I do hate Walmart.* * * *Before you take up a cause, please do some research.* * * On Sat, Dec 22, 2012 at 11:02 AM, Our Compass

I always send my letter before a protest to determine what the response is. If I receive similar feedback, I will edit my letter to reflect such, but thus far I have received no response.

Solange although i respect your right to have an opinion i respectfully but fully disagree with pretty much all that youve stated First of all This is NOT ridiculous i take offence to that Japanese fighting fish DO NOT prefer tiny containers like those they are kept in at Walmart and other places that sell them yes they do in the wild prefer “smaller” areas but NOT tiny ones where there is never anywhere to go in the wild they can swim freely in a small area in those tiny cups they have only afew inches to move so i suggest that you do some research on these fish because it is cruel and disgusing to keep them that way and to sell them that way also the fact that they get these fish from a fish farm is NO consolation in fact thats even more disgusting as fish farms are notoious for neglect and cruelty in any case Thanks Dear Stacey for alerting me to this email-comments sent thanks soo much Stacey you are the best! Have a great weekend

Thank you so much for your information and comments and protest, Florence. That is very helpful as I was unaware they were raised on farms. Your help is greatly appreciated.

as one can easily see, these creatures need special care and conditions to thrive, and are better suited to freedom.

as far as the “farm” argument, that is the rationalization used by canned animal hunters and mink farmers…

also they are frequently bought by those whose idea of a good time is to watch them fight to the death 😦

“They are in small containers, because they prefer it and live in small territories in the wild”. Yes, in the WILD, not in a box!
Walmart and everyone else can find our protest ridiculous BUT we won’t stop because depriving living beings of their freedom is always wrong and when something is wrong, we raise our voice, like it or not!
Thank you Stacey, Florence & Karen for the alert and the info

The biggest problem is that they are neglected at Walmart, where employees haven’t the experience or interest to care for these fish! They apparently are not fed, and often die while sitting on the shelves. At least at a fish store like Petsmart they are cared for properly, and the staff can instruct on proper handling.

Thanks for sharing, although any fish captured and sold for commerce are being enslaved.

As is there weren’t ALREADY many reasons to NOT SHOP AT WALMART! In addition to the abuses to their employees, they also have to make money on the sale of live fish, who invariably suffer due to negligence, lack of proper care, or outright abuse!
