Last week when we learned a restaurant in Wichita, KS, was planning to serve lion meat, we asked you to express spirited opposition. The resulting barrage of e-mails, calls and media interviews were persuasive enough to chef Jason Febres that two days before the $160-per-plate meal (which he had absurdly dubbed “the ultimate dining experience”) he removed African lions from the menu. A big thanks to all those of you who gave Febres a piece of your compassionate mind! We hope this incident will help raise awareness about the special challenges lions face in their struggle to remain a viable presence in the wild.

There’s offensive, there’s really offensive, and then there’s what is happening next Tuesday in Wichita, KS.
Jason Febres, who in a case of profoundly insensitive delusion calls it “the Ultimate Dining Experience event of the year,” is going to slice and dice exotic animals from around the world and pretend the meal he’s creating is something chic and wonderful. As bad as it is that he is cooking bits and pieces of African lion and other species usually spared from North American dinner plates (alpaca, antelope, crocodile, hare, kangaroo and water buffalo), what might be worse is that enough people have agreed to pay $160 for the “experience” that it is sold out.
How absolutely nauseating.
Please join us in condemning this kitchen calamity by letting the host restaurant, Taste & See, know that it should be ashamed of itself, its executive chef and his coming abomination. Make your e-mail as passionate and condemning as you can! (Without profanities or personal insults, of course!) You also can vent by calling the restaurant at (316) 771-7393.
At Born Free USA, we know a lot about the lion meat industry, and as we showed last year in our undercover investigation, it’s all bad. Everything about it stinks.
So does Febres’ “ultimate dining experience.” Please let him know how you feel — and don’t hold back!

Dear Taste and See,
I recently read that you are planning on serving African lion meat as well as alpaca, antelope, crocodile, hare, kangaroo, and water buffalo during your Ultimate Dining Experience event. I am respectfully requesting your cease this vile event due to the suffering and inhumane conditions inherent. For example, while you may think that farm-raised lions do not impact the animals in the wild, that is untrue. Farmed wildlife creates a demand for products, like lion meat, that makes it easier for poachers to get their products on the market.
Born Free USA’s investigation of the lion meat trade shines a bright light on this shady, under-regulated business that places both people and animals at risk. Consumers, restaurant owners and policy-makers are all equally responsible for putting a stop to this risky business by refusing to buy or sell lion meat and by pushing for and passing stronger regulations and prohibitions on the possession, slaughter, and sale of lions in the United States.
There is no need to serve any type of meat when there are so many other options available that are more humane and do not pose a threat to wildlife (such as multiple fantastic vegan dishes).
I urge you to immediately remove meat from your Ultimate Dining Experience event and support sustainable, humane dining instead.

Here is what I wrote: 30 Year old Jason Febres needs to be more responsible and conscious of the world we ALL share. To serve up “exotic” meats is neither by a long shot! Instead of helping to slaughter these beautiful beings, he could be hosting a vegan meal extravaganza where some of the profits could go to helping to keep these animals alive and away from poachers and others that exploit them for their own gain. But sadly, Febres seems to fall with that group. I am shocked that any reputable venue would host such a barbarian “feast.” The fact that the event is sold out does, in way, speak for the goodness in your planned event. It only confirms that there are too many people in this world that don’t care about anyone but themselves. What would happen if human was on the menu? If it were legal, would you serve that … if it sold out? You may think I’m being extreme and you’re shaking your head “no” and laughing at the absurdity of that question but honestly … the only difference is that one is legal and the other isn’t. If it were legal, why not? And it’s that this juncture that we separate ourselves. I don’t care if it’s legal if it’s morally and responsibly wrong. Killing innocent animals just to satify your pallet is wrong. It’s selfish and egotistical. Not to mention, cruel.
I’m including an article about the lion meat trade in America. I do hope you’ll read it. Prove me wrong, because I’m betting you won’t. But if you read none of it, at least, for your own good, seriously, read the two portions labeled: “Risks to Human Health,” and “Mislabeling and Misleading.” I hope that you will also read the portion labeled: “Lions Suffer” as the methods used to kill these animals are anything by humane and you will be aiding in their suffering.

This is just sick. It is catastrophic that humans have become so numb to violent horrific acts of torture inflicted on their fellow animals. It is disturbing to know there are people who see nothing wrong with this, let alone hundreds of thousands, or millons.

This is appalling! I am truly horrified. Does this chef, and the people that are going to attend, have ANY conscience or compassion?? Apparently NOT. This whole thing just makes me so sad. Will we ever as a human race, evolve? I sent my letter to Mr. Febres today. Don’t know if it will be read, but at least I tried.

I shared and posted a link so people would see this. It makes me feel physically sick that people would do such a thing. Granted, I am not vegetarian or vegan, although I have thought about at least being vgetarian (or cutting wayyyyy down on my meat consumption) but I WILL NOT tolerate the consumption of these beautiful exotic animals.
