BACKGROUND | SOURCE DIGITAL JOURNAL

In a shocking decision by senior judges in Northern Ireland, Lennox, a Labrador/American Bulldog, has been ordered destroyed. The ruling upholds the decision of two lower courts, to euthanize a dog that has committed no harm.

For two long years, the Barnes family have fought to bring their dog home after he was seized by the City of Belfast in May 2010 and ordered destroyed for being a “pit-bull type” dog. The ruling came in response to an appeal by the family, and upheld the decision of two lower courts who decided under the Dangerous Dogs Act (DDA), that Lennox was a danger to the public and must be euthanized. According to the DDA, a dog’s physical traits could bear influence on how it behaves and “pit-bull” types, like Lennox, are automatically deemed dangerous. In other words, Lennox was measured with a tape measure; he fit the profile, and was seized. Yet Lennox has never threatened to harm a living soul, and even statements from celebrity and recognized canine experts attesting to the dog’s good-nature, have been consistently overthrown in favor of the testimony of one individual, Peter Tallack, a police dog handler and supporter of the DDA.

SAMPLE LETTER

To Whom It Concerns,

Lennox is an exceptionally well-behaved and loving dog; naturally curious and energetic, he loved to play and go on walks, each new encounter a welcomed and joyful experience, each new sight interesting and deserving of innocent scrutiny. Lennox loves attention but does not demand such, and gladly and willingly accepts a stroke, a pat, a glance, and an opportunity to play. His bright eyes are always welcoming, his demeanor gentle, his loyalty infallible; he’ll be your playmate, your confidante, your partner, your sidekick, your solace in a decidedly lonely and uncomfortable world. For this unending loyalty and unquestioning love, Lennox may encounter a journey, not of loyalty or kindness, but of pain and betrayal. Sadly, in an ironic and cruel circumstance, the very people sworn to protect others and dispense constitutionally-sound decisions now bear the potentially unsettling distinction of executioner.

Although the premise of BSL or the DDA  is inherently biased and potentially unconstitutional, it is important to recognize it is based on erroneous information, inaccurate witness accounts, and according to inequitable circumstances. To target Lennox according to one hysterical outburst, impetuous reactions to news accounts, and questionable testimony is pure conjecture and serves no purpose other than creating conflict and dividing the community. This is neither productive nor beneficial.

As one global collective, we applaud Lennox’s determination to survive, and we embrace his loyalty and love even given the shadowy depravity that has colored his previously bright world. We choke on emotion when we are confronted with the cruel reality of the hideous event he may endure and his subsequent love for those around him, unaffected by an act that would leave humans forever scarred by doubt and hesitancy. It would be a shame not to witness your country’s beauty and potential, yet as long as Lennox is condemned unjustly, I will be unable to consider travel to or commerce of such. Please use your office to influence a favorable decision to release Lennox, either to his family or to any of numerous rescues willing to adopt him.

I know your time is limited and I thank you for attention to this urgent appeal.

once upon a time,
there was a little girl,
lennox, her dog,
was her world.
then one day,
her world was seized,
by laws injust and
morally diseased.
as her family agonized,
this little girl and her
dog, were traumatized.
time slowly passed,
and sadly it flew,
a verdict unjust
left a planet
crying and blue.
so those of you,

save this dog.

I have a rescued female pit. She is the best most wonderful loving beautiful girl, despite major abuse. Please save him. He has been treated well, is beautiful and faithful to his owner. Please dont punish her because of ignorance. Pits arn’t the problem. It’s the people. Please spare him and any other dog needs consideration. Please.

I copied the letter and sent it, but it was undeliverable because the mailbox is full. I hope that is a good sign.

The rumor that Lennox has been put to death is a RUMOR: Death row dog Lennox will not be destroyed until Belfast City Council is completely satisfied that all legal options have been exhausted, it has been confirmed.

Speculation was rife online that the pitbull-type dog, which has been kept at a secret location since being seized by Belfast City Council two years ago, was put to sleep hours after the Court of Appeal rejected a legal challenge against a destruction order on Tuesday.

However, a council source has confirmed that the seven-year-old family pet is still alive and would remain in care for the time being.

Lennox’s owners have the right to take their case to the Supreme Court in London — the final court of appeal in the UK. But the landmark case, which has already cost the public purse tens of thousands of pounds, could go all the way to Europe.

This means Belfast City Council will not put the dog down until Lennox’s owners and their legal representatives decide where, if anywhere, they go next.

I asked for leniency for Lennox. I hope all is not lost for that good dog. Before we start putting down the good dogs, let’s just start punishing the bad owners.
