UPDATE | JUNE 6

Thank you to all who responded to our alert regarding pigeons trapped behind a deterrent net at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Manhattan. ASPCA officials have responded to the scene and the net has been opened enough to allow birds to escape. PETA will continue to monitor the situation.

Thank you for your compassion and willingness to act for animals!

BACKGROUND | SOURCE PETA

Live birds are reportedly trapped behind a bird deterrent net at Our Lady of Sorrows Church at 213 Stanton St. in Manhattan. According to callers, several dead birds can be seen on the ground or hanging in the net. PETA called Father Thomas Faiola, the pastor at the church, but he would not give assurances that the church would take action to free the birds before they perish of starvation or dehydration.

Please contact Father Thomas Faiola and politely urge him to open the net immediately, flush out the live birds, and then seal any points of entry to prevent birds from becoming trapped in the future. It is imperative that your correspondence be polite or our campaign will suffer. Call or e-mail:

SAMPLE LETTER

Dear Father Faiola,

Live birds are reportedly trapped behind a bird deterrent net at Our Lady of Sorrows Church at 213 Stanton St. in Manhattan. According to callers to PETA, several dead birds can be seen on the ground or hanging in the net.

I respectfully request that you flush out the live birds and then seal any points of entry to prevent birds from becoming trapped in the future.

Animals are sentient creatures, capable of emotions including love and suffering, like human animals.  It is our responsibility to accept this most important tenet and respond to situations accordingly.  Please act with compassion and free the trapped birds before they perish of dehydration or starvation.

Thank you for taking the time to read this important appeal.

Yours respectfully,

Ms. , Thank you for the information and your concern regarding the above subject. Our agents visited this location on Sunday,6/3 and there were no birds trapped. The pastor said that prior to our inspection some birds had gotten into the netting but he had them released.

If the church doesn’t show compassion for God’s creatures, it’s just a hypocrit!

    What a jerk.
They can remedy the situation if they want. Would require a little thought – not possible from religious people.
But at least he is being honest and direct!
    Perfect name for his Crutch.

It is such a tragedy when humanity does not alleviate suffering. Christ spent His life alleviating suffering…and yet some members of the church avoid their duty to be compassionate as Our Father is compassionate. Respectfully, the Parish and its priests need to meditate on verses Job 12:7-10, Genesis 6:19, 7:1, 16, Psalm 148:5-10, Hosea 2:18, Genesis 9:9-10, Exodus 23:12, Proverbs 12:0, Deuteronomy 25:4 — better yet start with Genesis and go right thru to Revelation to read what God has to say about animals and how to treat earth and all creation. God created these birds in His love and breath as Luke 12:6 instructs: “Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten in God’s sight.”

I hope someone has plans to construct something that will alleviate this problem. Someone in the neighborhood needs to help the innocents.
