URGENT: Goldfish Desperately Need Your Voice Again
BACKGROUND
Experts know that fish are complex beings who have personalities, form bonds, and have a large capacity for suffering. Hoping to draw in customers, Denver restaurant The Bar is offering “goldfish shots,” in which bartenders serve patrons shots of liquor containing live goldfish, and “goldfish races,” during which patrons armed with water bottles or water guns blast the animals down tracks made of plastic gutters. Such cruel activities are undoubtedly terrifying for these tiny, defenseless animals who have no means of escape.
Please politely ask The Bar to stop this cruelty. Urge management to explore other activities that don’t cause suffering—and please forward this alert far and wide! These fish need your voice now!

Dear Mr. Rodriguez and Mr. Vilotti,
It has come to my attention that you have created a drink using live fish: a live fish is put in a shot for the patron to drink, and I am respectfully requesting The Bar cease offering a live fish shot as well as the cruel event “goldfish races”.
Please allow me to elaborate. Fish are complex animals who experience suffering and joy, and who also have the capacity to nurture complex relationships and display grief upon separation. Furthermore, despite an almost-universal apathy towards their sensitivity, fish indeed experience pain and react negatively towards stressful situations including loud noises, lights, enclosures, and disturbed environments. Although patrons may find this amusing and a chance to demonstrate bravado to others, it is indeed a painful and terrifying experience for the fish.
Please take this opportunity to express compassion and empathy for our animal friends and decide to help rather than harm them by discontinuing the fish drink and race.

Wow, let me guess…you got an email from Stacey at The Petition Spot which made all of these claims to you, and wait…you never verified any of them so you sent an email in disgust and don’t know anything that is actually happening around here.
1. Get educated, or at least do some actual research on your own before you cast aspersions.
2. We are ethical people who are not doing anything you or The Petition Spot is purporting to.
3. Yes we are conducting races, but if you took the time to contact us in an appropriate manner, you would find that it is done in a very humane and appropriate manner, and the fish are kept in an extremely clean and caring manner.

The goldfish races have even started yet Stacey! LOL Whoever visited that bar with the goldfish races and the goldfish shots must’ve been in the wrong bar. I visit The Bar often, and have yet to see a goldfish race conducted. However, it is supposed to debut soon.

Please stop this downright blatant cruelty you are carrying out in your bar to goldfish.
I beg of you that you explore other activities that don’t cause suffering of live be-ings for the entertainment of your customers? There are other ways to make an honest buck than to exploit, torture and murder living creatures who have every right to enjoy their lives as we do as humans.

Oh, and what gives you the right to think you can exploit another be-ing like that???”

“The fact that we don’t see eye to eye on anything you are proclaiming. That there are no laws to stop me from doing so and the fact the the Denver Health Department, Police Department and Animal Rescue have all approved of our measures and see no harm in what is occurring.
I am fully within my rights to do so legally, and yes ethically. I am a hunter, a fisher, and a meat eater. I see nothing wrong with this practice and will continue to do so, so long as I abide by the laws of this City and State.

i’m INFURIATED w/ this man and others like him who think they can just do this because the ‘law’ says. do they not have hearts that feel?!

Thanks, Lis, I got the first response but not the second. These people mistake legal with humane, which is downright repulsive. Law doesn’t define morality. It’s too bad that they are continuing this cruelty, legal or not. Immaturity and cruelty define them.
