Billions of animals need our help. Yesterday, Florida Senator Jim Norman reintroduced his bill to protect animal abusers by making it a crime to film animal cruelty on factory farms. Senator Norman wants to stop groups like PETA, MFA, HSUS, and others from filming undercover video of factory farming. He states factory farming is a private industry and therefore the public does not have a right to see what goes on inside their walls. He says that if people saw the pigs getting castrated, for example, they would probably not eat ham (McDonalds). The animals desperately need your voice. Without you, they have no hope.

SUBJECT

Please retract your plan illegalizing Animal Rights Activists documenting animal cruelty

SAMPLE LETTER

Dear Senator Norman,

If you were confident all animals are being treated “humanely”, you would gladly welcome Animal Rights Activists.  Many of these resulted in heightened food safety and animal welfare improvements.  However, we both know that cruelty is prevalent, suffering is felt by all, and slaughtering, in and of itself, is inhumane, the deliberate taking of a life.  Subsequently, the public has every right to see from where their food comes.

Ten billion non-human animals are slaughtered every year in decidedly inhumane manners: when cows are skinned while still conscious; when pigs suffer in gestation crates, barely able to move; when male chicks, of no value to the industry, are thrown alive in huge trash bags; when many industry standards cause suffering, including tail docking, castration, branding, and tagging, all with no anesthesia; when people beat on the animals and subject them to such agony.

Although not required, I do feel it important to validate my concerns: when I try to imagine what possible motive animal abusers entertain for subjecting their animal victims to such malicious, heinous acts of brutality, I fail, but I am thankful for a lack of cognitive understanding and rationalization. To engage in such malevolent behaviour absolutely suggests sociopathic and sadistic tendencies and demonstrates an incontrovertible lack of morality regarding other living beings and a gross disrespect for the law. In fact, a person who shows such a remarkable lack of compassion towards animals has, disturbingly enough, the ability to show such indifference towards humans. This link between animal and human abuse has been established, and if we excuse or ignore the torture or killing, we would be serving an injustice to both animals and society.

With that in mind, you should be confident that transparency is the  best decision; however, if you continue with your plans to introduce legislation making it illegal for Animal Rights Activists to document the treatment of animals, we can only conclude that you are hiding behind legislation the real hideous nature of factory farming.

    Dear Stacy,

I did send yoour letter to Senator Norman. However, I’d like to comment. Your intentions are most noble, but is it really effective to complain with a person who actually is the cause of the complaint? This individual represents the farming industry and is on their side. So he is part of a problem, not a solution. We should address the petition to those legislators who can help to stop Senator Norman.

Why can’t the money people see what their doing to this nation America. Am I just stupid or has all this been going on forever? Could it be that out president is NUTS? Good luck with your animal rights work in China. That’s where you’re working, right? Because that’s where that picture of the pigs at the top of this page was taken. In 2007.

I agree with you, there is more than too much animal cruelty going on on this planet, and many people lie about it to profit off it. But why the hell do you need to do the same?? take the article’s photo for an example: this ain’t animal cruelty for f*cks sake, that’s just a friggin transport box. if you ever had to take a cat to the vet you know that you can’t just let it sit on the passenger’s seat, the lil’ hairball would go crazy mad and possibly put the driver in danger of losing control of the vehicle. the same with pigs! look at the car in the background, might be the transport vehicle, looks pretty sh*tty. if you let 8 pigs run around freely on the back while driving on a highway they would all get scared, start to panic and probably jump on the driver who then crashes at full speed and causes many deads. if you wanna stand against animal cruelty, at least research before blogging half true bullshit. and another thing: how would you guys feel if strangers start taking photos of your stuff? taking photos on private area without the approval of the owner is a criminal offense and piggies still belong to the owner (which is the real crime here people)
