BACKGROUND

Activists travel to Pennsylvania almost every week to attend the pigeon shoots and document the event. They point out that Pennsylvania’s Animal Cruelty Law, Title 18, section 5511, prohibits a person from wantonly or cruelly ill-treating or abusing any animal. The law also prohibits neglect, abandonment, and deprivation of food, drink, shelter, or veterinary care. Pigeon shoots violate every one of these prohibitions. All of the information including videos can be downloaded HERE or at PigeonShoots.com.

Pigeon shoots are competitions wherein hundreds to thousands of live birds are shot at to win prizes. A typical 3-day shoot contest can kill and injure up to 15,000 birds. The next canned pigeon shoot event is scheduled for October 3, 2010.

The pigeons are captured and collected for weeks ahead of time, then released from trap boxes only yards away from the so-called “sportsmen”. The birds are generally dazed and suffering from dehydration or starvation as they are sprung out of the boxes.

Rather than mercifully being given a quick death, 70% of the birds are injured when shot and either left to suffer slow deaths or collected and killed by pigeon shoot “trapper boys” or “wringers”, traditionally children, who break their necks, step on them, tear off wings, suffocate them, or cut off their heads with garden shears, among other abuses.

Pigeon shoots are nothing more than a vile excuse for entertainment for the dull-witted or psychopathic. Illegal in other countries and in all but a couple of American states, most people realize the despicable nature of these bird-killing contests.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

PENNSYLVANIA FRIENDS: PLEASE TAKE ACTION

This fall, Pennsylvania begins its grisly live pigeon shoot season, during which competitions take place nearly every weekend.

These are cruel events where shooters aim at dazed pigeons launched randomly from boxes with the macabre goal of downing the most birds within a ring for prizes and money.

Please make a brief, polite call to your Pennsylvania state house representative, and ask that he or she support the pigeon shoot amendment and ask Majority Leader Eachus to move the bill. Click HERE to look up your legislators’ names and phone numbers. After making your calls, complete and submit the form below to automatically send a follow-up email to your legislators.

Your state legislators receive a lot of email. Be sure to make yours stand out by editing the subject line and message with your own words.

MESSAGE TEXT

As you begin your first few days back, a handful of pigeon shooters, mostly from out of state, are getting ready for the start of pigeon shoot season in Pennsylvania. During pigeon shoots thousands of animals will be wounded and killed for prizes.

Even though only a few locations hold them, live pigeon shoots will take place nearly every weekend for the next few months.

We’re the last state to openly host these events and in truth, it’s embarrassing.

Participants come from out of state to Pennsylvania’s live pigeon shoots because it’s illegal in their home state. Even the birds are trapped illegally in other states and shipped in.

In fact, just about the only thing about shoots that comes from Pennsylvania is the legislature’s unwillingness to address this brutality.

Please end these pitiless events and pass the pigeon shoot bill/amendment. Thank you.

PENNSYLVANIA NON-RESIDENTS
Please forward information about this cruelty to your friends and relatives living in Pennsylvania. Your help is also needed to help publicize this inhumane activity. If you have a blog, Twitter account, or a Facebook page – please do a write-up. Your letters to Pennsylvania newspapers are also needed.

We should have a poster and postcards made of this front picture of so called “sportsmen” and their “slaughter” with a heading that reads:

“THE PROUD, THE UNBRAVE – THE DEPRAVED”

Mass murder of wildlife. STOP!Animals matter. STOP! EXTINCTION, EXPLOITATION, EXPERIMENTATION ~ for that was all that was left for Man in the hierarchy of God’s seven holy days. And Man looked about him and said that was good, for he was sovereign with all else beneath his feet. And when finally all the animals disappeared from his world, there was only one day of the Creation left, that of himself and he found himself alone. He began to pray to bring them back, but they were gone forever.
Piece by piece Man is dismantling the whole of Creation, polluting the air and oceans, obliterating forests, ravaging it’s wild creatures. Inhumane slaughter of agricultural animals, cruelty, abuse and neglect of domestic animals, hunting & harvesting the lands and seas; many have heard their agonizing, painful cries, and only death could release them of their bondage.
And Man grew afraid and prayed to bring them back, but they were gone forever.

    especially a pigeon!!!!
    what is wrong with humans
do they think it is fun
    to stare down living things
    from the barrel of gun
    if the tables were inverted
    and man was the prey
they would be on their knees crying

What a load of cowardly, grinning idiots….the killing of any living creature should never be classed as a “sport” as it’s so one sided it’s ALWAYS just a barbaric killing spree. Whatever poor innocent creature, they’re NEVER ever allowed a chance against morons who just want to show off that they can shoot, hit and kill…..(so could anyone, against the odds the poor creature is given)….it’s about time that Animal Welfares’ went up against the big, wealthy Hunting Firms who are the hidden guilty b***s behind all these animal slaughters, allowing any cowardly, sick moron to keep buying guns and ammunition, to maime and slaughter any innocent creature, just because they can’t fight back. There should be laws that allow clay pigeon shootings only…..and all these wicked, cruel and heartless killers should get a conscience or expect payback.

I agree with the letters already written, it sickens me to hear of such dreadful slaughter of these beautiful birds, they are trusting and non agressive so would not be expecting to be shot at when realeased from traps. I’d like to shoot the grinning fools in the photo!

And we wonder why we have mass murderers. They are carefully taught thats why. They start out with animals and end up with humans for more of a thrill.

I’m appalled at such useless, unnecessary killing, is this the only way these men/people can feel like they are worth something?

Not in my book they aren’t they are just killers.

How do one put an end to this horrible thing? I do not know what it is that make some people enjoy behaving like this, but if we can solve that then we could maybe get some hope for the world.

Jane, You totally Rock… Regarding David Hartley and the missing Jet Ski. My thought is that the Mexican Drug Cartel is a gang and as we all know gang’s have their hands in pretty much everything that is illegal for huge amount’s of money. Do you think it at all possible that they very quickly assumed his body and exumed his organ parts for selling over seas??
