Dog left to die in crate located in blazing temperatures, public help needed

Certain dog stories so unpleasant that they are difficult to share. However, some stories are so important that they must be shared.

On June 23, 2010, city animal control was called to the residence of Charles Bell, where they discovered the dead body of a dog that had been left in a crate in the sun for two miserable, long days. The dog had been left in the locked crate with no food, no water, and most importantly, no shade. The temperatures were in excess of 100 degrees.

It is nearly impossible to comprehend the suffering that this poor dog endured as she lay in the intense heat with no means to cool her parched body. Apparently someone had asked the owner if the dog could be moved to the shade and he (Charles Bell) refused.

There are photos showing a kennel enclosure right next to the deceased dog’s wire crate. The kennel enclosure had a tarp on the top for shade, and a bucket full of water. The now deceased dog had to look at this kennel enclosure (that could have saved her life) as she lamented in the wire crate with no relief for her suffering. It appears that the dog was intentionally being made to suffer in the most inhumane manner possible.

This story is being relayed to readers for a very specific purpose. Charles Bell must be made to pay for his crime against this innocent dog. He is going to court on July 23 and there are people in his community that need to be aware of his actions – it is time to speak up on behalf of this abused dog – a dog that never had a voice – a dog that died alone in a horrible, agonizing manner.

Please contact the following people to voice your well thought out and professional comments (while this may justify outraged expletives, the letters and comments will hold more weight if they are provided with educated and thoughtful restraint). Please feel free to use the SAMPLE LETTER below for correspondence to Mayor Wukela.

SAMPLE LETTER:

Dear Mayor Wukela,

I have learned of an extremely disturbing and malicious case of animal cruelty in which Charles Bell, allegedly, deliberately caused the suffering and death of a dog, left to suffer in a cage, denied food, water, and shade or comfort in blistering temperatures exceeding 100 degrees. This alleged incident was discovered by animal control personnel on June 23, 2010, when they determined the dog had been left there for two days prior to them being requested to intervene. I respectfully request you use your position as a respected city official to support the most severe punishment for Mr. Bell.

Please allow me to elaborate. Our global communities share laws, moral and written, and when one person demonstrates such a gross lack of respect for both, our societies must react with concern for the innocent and potential victims, who include both non-human and human animals. It is our obligation to protect them from both manufactured and intrinsic cruelty, and although the distinction is often difficult to identify, the effect is not, and our priority is the innocent, in this case an innocent, sentient dog. Nobody possesses such heightened intuitive ability to determine the thoughts of another, but past behaviours are potentially indicative of future actions, and Mr. Bell’s callous disregard, so easily adopted as demonstrated by his unprovoked and lethal behaviour, needs to be regarded rather than dismissed.

Please respect the victims by penalizing the guilty and demonstrate your commitment to justice, responsibility, and integrity, attributes unquestionably necessary in an judicial setting: rejecting cruelty by maintaining an unyielding position towards it would be a model for all community members and would serve to characterize this type of behaviour as both impermissible and punishable.

Thank you for your attention to this urgent issue.

Its a shame a monster like this is breathing the same air we do!! I hope he rots in HELL!! Nothing on the face of the Earth deserves to die the way that poor little dog did…for whatever the reason. Thank you for picking up this horrific case. I get a sick to my stomach when I think of the slow, tortous death he must have suffered. I would like to put this abuser in a cage and set him out in the hot sun to bake to death over the course of a few days as he did that poor dog. I will make the calls first thing in the a.m.

THIS IS SO TERRIBLY CRUEL! Please see that an example is made of this man,
that he is never allowed near an animal again, that he be made to do a lot of
community service to try to make up in a small way for what he has done, and
that he receives the maximum sentence that can be imposed. I’d also like to see laws strengthened and penalties stiffened for any and every crime like this one. I pray
for this man, and pray I’ll stop hating him so much that I almost wish HE
were in the cage in the blistering, killing heat. He’s cruel in the worst sense of the word,
and CANNOT get away without being punished for this crime.

Dear Mayor Wukela, With upmost respect for you I pray that what Charles Bell has done to the dog in the cage, no water or food, left to die unmerciful & no conscience, he gets punished for this. The dog didn’t deserve that kind of treatment! God put the animals on earth for us to love not harm them. The poor thing could not help itself in any way. Why not take the dog to an animal shelter if Charles Bell didn’t want it? Why be so mean & cruel. I pray that he gets punished to the max!!! He deserves to sit out in 90-100 degrees for 2 days with no food & water. If we don’t stop this animal cruelty now it will never end. So I beg of you to punish this man. Maybe this will show others that are sick that this will not be tolerated. Please, please punish this man for this act of cruelty!!! Thanks so much.

I think that this guy should be punished to the degree that he did to this poor animal, there is no reason for this to happen to an animal. All the animals do is love you unconditionally and
ask for very little in return. If we let this go unpunished what is this world coming to. PUNISH HIM TO The MAX and BEYOND>

This is a disgrace to the human race, to let an animal suffer soo much deserves a hard punishment.

Please put this man behind bars for a long time, if he does it to an animal
what would he do to a child????

Purposely suffering because you was mad at your dog?
And the neighbor, I don’t understand, why didn’t he/she call humane society much sooner
so that the dogs life could have been safed?

This is deplorable and I’m sure he will get the maximum fine. Jail time is wasted on this guy, just drop him off in the Mojave Dessert with no water and no food and let him find his way back!
Anyway, the question that is really eating me up here is why the “alleged person” who asked to move the dog didn’t take further steps? If it was me, Id not only be calling Animal Control, ASPCA but also the local police. If I didn’t get a response, I’d have gone and taken the dog that same day.
I think this is as disturbing.

One thing that needs to be is that when someone sees an abusive situation the laws backs them up and allows them to take measures to prevent them getting away with this kind of stuff. The person should have been able to move the dog or REmove it to safer environment.

So many times someone sees an abuse and can do nothing or they are breaking the law. Our legal system is so upside down. More protection of rights for those who are cruel and intentionally so. So sad.

This is the email I got :
UPDATE: Sentenced today July 23rd, 2010

The sentence: 30 days in jail to be served on weekends and a fine of $1,092 is what torturing a dog to death for two days gets you in SC, even when it’s not your first offense. Thankfully they are taking his other animals away.

The Examiner’s analysis: “According to the law of South Carolina, and this being Charles Bell’s third offense of animal cruelty, he should see no less than two years in jail with a fine set at the maximum of $2,000. Anything less would be an affront to all human decency after he left that poor dog to die of heat and thirst which he did knowingly as it is documented that a concerned neighbor made him aware of the dog’s plight.”

Title 47, the animal cruelty law of South Carolina SECTION 47-1-40. Ill-treatment of animals generally.

    (A) Whoever knowingly or intentionally overloads, overdrives, overworks, ill-treats any animal, deprives any animal of necessary sustenance or shelter, inflicts unnecessary pain or suffering upon any animal, or by omission or commission knowingly or intentionally causes these things to be done, for every offense is guilty of a misdemeanor and, upon conviction, must be punished by imprisonment not exceeding sixty days or by a fine of not less than one hundred dollars nor more than five hundred dollars, or both, for a first offense; by imprisonment not exceeding ninety days or by a fine not exceeding eight hundred dollars, or both, for a second offense; or by imprisonment not exceeding two years or by a fine not exceeding two thousand dollars, or both, for a third or subsequent offense. Notwithstanding any other provision of law, a first offense under this subsection shall be tried in magistrate’s or municipal court.

    (B) Whoever tortures, torments, needlessly mutilates, cruelly kills, or inflicts excessive or repeated unnecessary pain or suffering upon any animal or by omission or commission causes the acts to be done for any of the offenses is guilty of a felony and, upon conviction, must be punished by imprisonment of not less than one hundred eighty days and not to exceed five years and by a fine of five thousand dollars.

30 days and a little fine. Is this justice???? leave him 30 days in a cage under the sun, so he can understand. It’s not the first time he abused animals, I’m afraid it won’t be the last. Let him know what it means.

Sure hope this guy sees time behind bars. I will call tomorrow and see if he has been sentenced. This is rediculous and justice needs to be served in a court, with a stiff sentence following. Wonder why some people even get animals, when they don’t take care of them. Hope this guy doesn’t take of children or elderly.
