BACKGROUND

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Center for Tobacco Products has issued draft recommendations for the testing of some tobacco products. This guidance would allow companies to conduct cruel animal tests to demonstrate the “reduced risks” of new products and ingredients. These deadly tests are included in the guidance even though they are irrelevant to human smokers and there are more modern and accurate non-animal methods available, such as computer simulation, tests using human cells, and clinical studies with human smokers.

In some of the horrendous tobacco tests that could be conducted, rats would be forced to breathe tobacco smoke for as long as six hours a day for months at a time by jamming the animals into tiny canisters and pumping concentrated cigarette smoke directly into their noses. The animals would then be killed and their bodies dissected.

For decades, the tobacco industry used results from these misleading animal tests to deny the link between smoking and cancer because animals forced to inhale cigarette smoke don’t develop the same diseases that human smokers do.

Belgium, Germany, the U.K., and other countries have banned the testing of tobacco products on animals, and all the tobacco safety tests required by the Canadian government are modern, non-animal methods.

We need to tell the FDA loudly and clearly that no more animals should suffer and die for these archaic, inaccurate, and cruel tests on products that we already know are deadly when used as directed!

Please exercise your right as a U.S. citizen to submit a polite comment to the FDA urging it to remove any language recommending or allowing animal tests from its draft guidance on tobacco product testing.

I am shocked to learn that the FDA continues to support animal experimentation on tobacco products. Considered archaic and fundamentally flawed, product testing on animals lacks social legitimacy and validation.

Furthermore, to foster an idea that consumers continually support animal experimentation due to some inaccurate notion that it will prevent them from being harmed is unprincipled. Animals suffer drastically different effects from tobacco use than humans.  Tobacco use and abuse can factually lead to harm regardless of how many animals are wrongfully killed during the product testing phase.

Please make both the ethical and financially-responsible decision to discontinue animal experimentation immediately: remove any language recommending or allowing animal tests from its draft guidance on tobacco product testing;  join an increasing body of countries who are listening to a concerned and attentive consumer population who refuse to be complicit in the inherently malicious and ineffective industry of animal experimentation.

The 2012 European Football Championship is just about to start, and the host countries, Poland and Ukraine, have been busily preparing for a surge of sports tourism. In Ukraine, that means shocking efforts to reduce the number of homeless animals across the country in an attempt to hide the country’s neglected and abandoned dogs from tourists.

Animals are poisoned, shot, and, in some cases, even burned alive. Authorities in Lysychansk, Mariupol, and other Ukrainian cities use a cremation truck, which has even advertised on national television. The animals are caught and then shot or anesthetized and thrown directly into the cremation truck!

Even the Union of European Football Associations, which PETA Germany contacted in 2009, sharply criticized the cruel practices of Ukrainian authorities and offered financial support to animal protection advocates to neuter animals. Ukrainian authorities have reacted to the efforts of animal rights advocates with repressive measures: They have put pressure on animal activists to stop the international protest!

What You Can Do

Please help the animals in Ukraine and support our protest against the mass killing of homeless dogs. Sign the petition to ask the Ukrainian Embassy in the United States to speak out against the cruel killings and push for humane animal birth control!

Harvard Medical School has a history of neglecting, harming, and even killing animals in its laboratories, and the situation just keeps getting worse. Last October, a marmoset escaped from his cage, was captured, and died during an imaging procedure at Harvard’s New England Primate Research Center (NEPRC). PCRM has uncovered disturbing new details about this incident, and we need your help to ask NEPRC interim director Mark Barnes, J.D., LL.M., to immediately end the cruel and unnecessary experiment that killed this marmoset.

From correspondence received through the Freedom of Information Act, PCRM learned that in this experiment, marmosets are forced into restraint tubes barely larger than their bodies. Then, they are placed in an EchoMRI machine while fully awake. It appears that the marmoset who died during the experiment was so panicked that he suffered lethal injury during capture, restraint and placement in the tube, or the imaging procedure.

Not only is this experiment extremely cruel, it is also completely unnecessary. Marmosets are being used to study the human aging process—something that is being effectively and ethically investigated in humans through population studies and clinical trials.

PCRM has asked federal authorities to investigate this experiment for waste, fraud, and abuse, but the marmosets still at risk at NEPRC need help this instant. The protocol has been suspended, but it must be terminated to save the remaining marmosets. Please e-mail Mr. Barnes  today to ask him to end this deadly experiment and retire the marmosets who are still alive to sanctuary.

Please help stop the abuse and slaughter of horses for human consumption!

For the past six years, a provision added to the recurring Agricultural Appropriations bills has prohibited any federal funds from being used to inspect horses prior to slaughter. Without such inspections, it is illegal for horse meat to be later sold for human consumption in the U.S. and slaughterhouses closed. Instead, the industry has been shipping more than 100,000 American horses each year for slaughter in Canada and Mexico.

This year, the House of Representatives voted to again include the provision banning funds for inspections. However, in November, three members of a conference committee assigned to work out differences between the House and Senate versions of the legislation (Rep. Jack Kingston (R-GA), Senator Herb Kohl (D-WI), and Senator Roy Blunt (R-MO) removed the ban from the final conference report. The report was subsequently passed by both the Senate and the House and signed into law.

Horse slaughter for human consumption can now re-start in the U.S. and your help is needed more than ever to end this horrific practice once and for all.

Please contact your legislators in Congress by completing the form HERE and ask them to support the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act of 2011 (S. 1176/HR 2966). This legislation – which already has 25 Senate and 100 House co-sponsors – will permanently end the slaughter of horses for human consumption, and the domestic and international transport of live horses or horseflesh for human consumption.

Aside from providing the vivisection industry with live captive animals, PPI is also a key supplier of primate restraint devices and “bioproducts” (i.e. blood, organs, tissue samples, etc).

Primate Products’ executives and personnel have built their entire careers on the misery of countless innocent animals, but not without help. The company currently maintains a close business alliance with Indianapolis-based Harlan Laboratories. I was disappointed to learn that Harlan Laboratories does business with the notorious Primate Products, Inc., a Florida-based company with a record of shoddy animal care and reckless decisions that have led to animal suffering. There have been a number of serious incidents that suggest serious problems at Primate Products:

- In July 2009, Primate Products dumped close to 100 owl monkeys that they could not sell at a roadside zoo in Homestead, Florida. Within a week, at least 25 of the monkeys were dead!

- In 2010, disturbing photographs surfaced of monkeys inside Primate Products suffering from horrible wounds and crude surgical mutilations.

- In April 2011, Primate Products was cited by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for leaving monkeys who were still under anesthesia in an enclosure without supervision, and in the hot sun.

Your business with Primate Products is no secret. Poor employee morale at Primate Products has made the company leakier than an old rusty bucket!

Please, do the right thing and permanently sever your ties with Primate Products.

Welcome back everyone; we are now in Week- 6 of our “Shut Down WSU Painful Dog Experiments Lab – In Memory of Queenie Cyber Action Thursday”

Our targets this week are again a variety of Wayne State Universities Professors: the colleagues of the vivisector and his cohorts of which we are going to “shut down”, therefore I have used basically the same sample letter, with a couple of changes.

It seems that WSU has been also making some changes, as I pulled up pages I had bookmarked on their site for e-mail addresses – they can no longer be found, this I take as a very good sign.

However, I had a huge stash and we are sending them this week; I understand many of you had trouble sending the bigger blocks through your e-mail carrier so I have tried to break them down a bit….

WSU is allowing former companion dogs purchased from Michigan Animal Shelters to be forced to run dozens of treadmill experiments with catheters protruding from their bodies and incisions leaking blood and other bodily fluids, causing pain and distress, with no anesthesia or compassion whatsoever, until they die!

This is not only totally unacceptable, but it is also a barbaric and completely inhumane act, which is being allowed to continue on the Wayne State University Campus. This cruelty has been continued at WSU for two decades while the number of people with poor heart health continues to rise.

This one laboratory is taking the good reputation WSU once had and is literally trashing it, and as you allow this to continue you are guilty as well.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — The Coast Guard is defending its practice of using live animals in its combat medical training after an activist group released a video on Wednesday of a goat’s legs being removed with tree trimmers during what it said was training for agency personnel.

Live anesthetized goats have been used in Coast Guard training to treat combat wounds, but the agency could not verify if the video involved its personnel. The courses do involve “live tissue training using live animals,” Lt. Cmdr. Jamie C. Frederick, spokesman for the Atlantic Area, wrote in an email.

Frederick was responding after People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals called on the Pentagon to stop the practice. A congressman also has introduced legislation that would phase out the use of animals by the military for such training.

PETA said the undercover video it released from a whistleblower did show military instructors contracted by the Coast Guard cutting off an anesthetized goat’s legs in Virginia Beach. The faces of the participants are blurred and they are not in uniform.

“Animals used in trauma training are supported and monitored by well-trained, experienced veterinary staff to ensure that appropriate anesthesia and analgesia prevent them from experiencing pain or distress,” Frederick wrote.

In the video, the goat is still while its legs are cut. Later it makes noise and moves, followed by one of the men calling for another “bump” of anesthesia.

Other branches of the military use similar training on goats and pigs and have defended it as a way to replicate wartime injuries and prepare medics and front-line troops for treating catastrophic injuries in the field of battle.

The Pentagon declined to respond to an AP request for comment on the video.

“Effective combat trauma training and treatment results in lowering the fatality rate of U.S. troops deployed in combat situations,” Frederick wrote.

He said the training has also proved invaluable in noncombat situations, such as when Coast Guard members were the first to respond to Haiti’s devastating 2010 earthquake.

PETA and other animal rights groups, as well as some medical professionals, say the practice is cruel and unnecessary. They promote the use of human simulation models over animals.

“Learning how to apply a tourniquet on a severed goat’s leg does not help prepare medical providers to treat an anatomically different human being wounded on the battlefield,” according to Dr. Michael P. Murphy, an associate professor of surgery at Indiana University School of Medicine and a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves who served two tours of duty in Iraq. He was among the medical professionals who signed PETA’s letter to Defense Secretary Leon Panetta seeking an end to the practice.

The group also asks U.S. Department of Agriculture to investigate “apparent serious violations of the Animal Welfare Act.”

U.S. Rep. Bob Filner, a California Democrat, has introduced legislation that would phase out such use of animals by the military. He said he’s faced fierce opposition from the Department of Defense.

“With these animals, they can break their limbs, or they want to simulate broken bones or a gunshot wound, and it’s not clear if they’re anesthetized or not,” he said. “You’re torturing animals when you don’t have to.”

This is not only totally unacceptable, but it is also a barbaric and completely inhumane act which is being allowed to continue on the Wayne State University Campus. This cruelty has been continued at WSU for two decades while the number of people with poor heart health continues to rise.

High Court decision follows petition by animal rights group; previous ruling farm to export animals for experimentation.

The High Court of Justice on Tuesday issued an interim injunction that suspended the shipment of 90 long-tailed macaque monkeys from a breeding farm in Israel to a US laboratory.

The decision came following a petition against the exports by animal rights group Let The Animals Live (Ten Lehayot Lihiyot) and is the latest stage in a long legal battle over the monkeys’ shipment to the US.

Immediately following the petition last week, the High Court issued a temporary injunction pending a further decision on advancing the petition to a panel hearing. Following that decision, on Tuesday morning Supreme Court Justice Hanan Melcer issued an an interim injunction to replace the temporary order, and said the petition will be heard by a panel of justices after the Passover holiday.

Melcer also ordered Attorney-General Yehuda Weinstein to file a legal opinion to the court regarding the matter of exporting monkeys for experiments.

Let the Animals Live spokeswoman Eti Altman welcomed the court ruling regarding the interim injunction as well as its decision to hear the petition after the Passover holiday.

“I hope that Passover, the holiday of freedom, will have a double meaning and that we will all hear and see these monkeys released into their natural habitat,” Altman said.

In its response to the court’s decision, Let the Animals Live said that the trade in primates was “illegal and contrary to Israeli policy.” Said Altman, “We find it hard to believe that the outrageous conduct of the [Israel] Nature and Parks Authority [INPA] continues in this regard.”

The organization petitioned the High Court in the wake of a Central District Court ruling a week ago, which allowed the Mazor Farm monkey breeding farm near Petah Tikva to export 90 female macaques to the US for experimentation. Mazor Farm petitioned the district court after the INPA delayed its export permit for the monkeys.

Animal rights groups had slammed the Central District Court’s ruling, in which Judge Ilan S. Shilo held that the INPA must permit the macaques to be exported to Shin Nippon Biomedical Laboratories (SNBL) in the US.

According to its website, SNBL is a preclinical contract research organization that specializes in nonhuman primate and small animal research. Israeli and international animal rights groups, including PETA, allege that SNBL has a record of cruelty to the animals in its laboratories, which SNBL denies.

In their petition, Let The Animals Live argued that exporting the macaques violated the Environmental Protection Ministry’s policy because the animals would be used in experiments that did not have the medical aim of of saving human lives or reducing suffering in humans.

The petition also contends that the export would be illegal because 70 of the 90 monkeys were not bred in captivity but captured in the wild. Let The Animals Live claims that fact contravenes Mazor Farm’s license, which permits it to sell only those primates whose ancestors were born in captivity.

On Monday, the INPA and Mazor Farm filed their responses to the petition.

Mazor Farm asked the court to reject the petition, citing the District Court ruling. The permits for the export were granted in January, its lawyers argued, adding that the real reason for the petition was to bring about the closure of Mazor Farm.

Mazor Farm also said the monkeys would be used for “biomedical research aimed at life-saving or preventing suffering in humans,” and noted that SNBL was bound by international regulations.

Let the Animals Live on Tuesday accused the INPA of failing to enclose in its response to the court a letter from Environmental Protection Minister Gilad Erdan, which stated his position on the matter.

In his letter dated Monday, a copy of which Let Animals Live gave to The Jerusalem Post, Erdan said Mazor Farm had not complied with Israel’s policy on trading primates.

Erdan said in the letter that he was considering revoking the INPA’s ability to to issue permits for primate trade for the purpose of experimentation.

“I believe Israel must end its trade in primates, for example the trade carried out by Mazor Farm,” he said.

Erdan said the particular trade in question was “ethically and possibly also legally flawed.”

I am very excited to be able to share with you another victory for animals. The University of Washington (UW) informed us this week that it has replaced the use of ferrets with human-based medical simulators to teach future pediatricians.

This change is the result of PCRM’s campaign, the support of our members, the hard work of the local advocacy group Seattle Animal Defense League, and the willingness of UW to adopt current best practices. We could not have done this without you, who, along with 59,000 PCRM supporters flooded UW administrators with e-mails and written petitions over the past year encouraging the school to take this progressive step. And UW finally listened!

A UW spokesperson informed PCRM that instead of ferrets “tetherless simulators are being employed at the point-of-care at the bedside to simulate resuscitations and enhance teamwork among healthcare providers.” The spokesperson also stated that “simulation will be a more cost-effective way to train intubation techniques.”

Ferrets used in endotracheal intubation training at UW suffered through multiple intubations and were used for several sessions. Also, some of the animals used were later killed. Fortunately, the school has now joined the 95 percent of pediatrics residency programs in the United States that view nonanimal methods as not only more humane but educationally superior.

While UW has decided to make this necessary change, there are still 9 other schools that need to do so. The University of Virginia (UVA) continues to use cats in endotracheal intubation training. Please contact UVA president Teresa Sullivan, Ph.D., and ask her to replace the use of cats with human-based medical simulation.

Our weekly Cyber Action event is dedicated to Queenie, a companion animal (dalmation mix) who was turned in to a shelter in Gratiot Co., Michigan, as a stray, only to be sold shortly thereafter to a sadistic vivisector from WSU. AstraZeneca are a major CURRENT customer and vocal supporter of HLS’s cruel methods of animal torture and scientific fraud, as well as being in the position of huge layoffs over the past few years and financial and legal problems.  So 2012 is the year to really pile on the pressure and get them to ditch HLS!

AstraZeneca even have the audacity to state that no suffering occurs at HLS!  This was their response to the Animal Defenders International’s expose from 2008:

During the time of the expose, AstraZeneca were funding experiments on primates at HLS.

Not only did the breeding farm in Vietnam who supplied the poor animals not meet basic UK animal welfare standards, but the conditions of the animals when housed inside HLS was extremely poor; some monkeys were missing limbs, had skin problems or other infections.  Monkeys routinely escaped from cages, resulting in some being raped and attacked.

As you have already been made aware, HLS is Europe’s most exposed animal testing laboratory and have been filmed cutting open monkeys while still alive, punching animals in the face, falsifying experimental test data, and flouting regulations on a regular basis.

In late 2008 HLS were exposed yet again, during which time you were personally funding experiments on primates. Not only did the breeding farm in Vietnam not meet basic UK animal welfare standards, but the conditions of the animals when housed inside HLS was extremely poor; some monkeys were missing limbs, had skin problems or other infections. Monkeys routinely escaped from cages, resulting in some being raped and attacked. The monkeys were excessively stressed during procedures, which will undoubtedly affect experimental results. During a recent inspection of HLS’ Cambridgeshire facilities, you claimed the animals ‘did not suffer’. As a company that experiments on animal yourselves, you will be well aware that all animal experiments in England are licensed by the UK government – and these licenses are given out upon a judgement of suffering level – from ‘mild’ to ‘substantial’. Therefore, to claim that animals do not suffer inside HLS is absolutely absurd. I would suggest you visit HLS without notice, as I am sure you will witness a very different picture.

As a company that claims to achieve excellence and reliability in drug research, I am surprised to learn that you contract experiments inside a laboratory that has had their license revoked and exposed falsifying test data for clients. I would like to use this opportunity to request that you cease your contracts with this horrendous laboratory and invest in more reliable sources of data research.

I know your time is limited and I thank you for your attention and consideration of this urgent message.

The cruel trade in monkeys in South East Asia for the international research industry involves thousands of monkeys incarcerated in overcrowded and barren conditions in breeding farms across Laos.

The BUAV investigation uncovered shocking conditions that breach internationally recognised animal welfare guidelines. Some monkeys were found dead in their pens, while others were severely emaciated and suffering from severe hair loss and injuries.

The BUAV is calling for action by CITES (Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species) and governments to address the largely unregulated trade in macaque within South-east Asia and take action over the serious animal welfare concerns that this investigation has uncovered.

The long-tailed macaque (M. fascicularis) is currently the most heavily-traded mammal listed on the CITES Appendices. There has been a rapid expansion of the international trade in long-tailed macaques in South East Asia since 2004 as the breeding and supply of the species for research purposes has developed into a large-scale business enterprise. The number of long-tailed macaques exported globally for research sharply rose from 119,373 (between 1999 and 2003) to 261,823 (between 2004 and 2008). The monkeys are exported to Vietnam and China, both countries are major suppliers of macaques to the laboratories of the UK, Europe and the USA.

BUAV Chief Executive, Michelle Thew, states: “Our investigation has uncovered a disturbing and unregulated trade in monkeys for research. CITES and governments must start to address the growing concerns that surround the cruelty and plundering of the macaque populations from their native forests in South East Asia to feed the international research industry.”

I was shocked to learn the cruelty inflicted on long-tailed and pig-tailed macaques as exported by Laos for research, the efficacy of which is questionable at best, and lethal at worst.  These experiments subject the macaques to enormous suffering and pain; we must not allow for such exploitation to continue.

Furthermore, it has come to my attention that Indonesia is failing to comply with CITES regulations, and has clearly demonstrated a lack of conformity to CITES standards as established by CITES investigators.  Because of the gross misrepresentation Laos has committed, I respectfully ask that Laos place an immediate ban on on the capture, breeding, and export of long-tailed and pig-tailed macaques, not just until such a time when commitment to regulations can be reestablished, but permanently.

Animals are sentient beings, capable of thought and emotion, including love and suffering.  Prior to subjecting any animal to exploitation, I plead with your country to acknowledge this important condition that both humans and non-humans share.  We must teach our children respect for, and empathy towards, animals, for our children are undeserving of this cruel legacy whereby animals are exploited and suffered for human greed and egotistical motive.  Please immediately cease causing harm to the macaques, and implement animal research and testing alternatives, which have proven superior to unreliable animal models.

I hope you are as shocked and appalled by this situation as I am. Keeping monkeys in such terrible conditions breaches international animal welfare guidelines. It is cruel and detrimental to the mental well-being and physical health of the monkeys.

I urge the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry to carry out an urgent investigation and close down the monkey farms of Laos.

Primate Products is a Florida-based company with a record of shoddy animal care and reckless decisions that have led to animal suffering. There have been a number of serious incidents that suggest serious problems at Primate Products:

- In July 2009, Primate Products dumped close to 100 owl monkeys that they could not sell at a roadside zoo in Homestead, Florida. Within a week, at least 25 of the monkeys were dead!

- In 2010, disturbing photographs surfaced of monkeys inside Primate Products suffering from horrible wounds and crude surgical mutilations.

- In April 2011, Primate Products was cited by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for leaving monkeys who were still under anesthesia in an enclosure without supervision, and in the hot sun.

Please, do the right thing and permanently sever your ties with Primate Products.

I am extremely disappointed that you are still continuing with your contract with Harlan Interfauna despite being informed of the horrific cruelty of vivisection and how it’s holding back science. Dogs inside Harlan are kept in cages, never let outside and only given 20 minutes of exercise a week. Female dogs at Harlan are treated like breeding machines and forced to produce litter after litter of puppies,  The dogs who are not labelled “profitable” are killed by Harlan, and that’s where your company comes in.

Your company arrives at Harlan in unmarked vans to collect the dead bodies of the dogs killed at Harlan to incinerate them. The other dogs are carted off to laboratories around the world to suffer cruelty beyond our imaginations. In laboratories animals are burned, poisoned, starved, mutilated, made ill etc. People can even order dogs from Harlan who have their vocal chords removed so they cannot cry out in pain when horrendous procedures are being inflicted upon them.

Yours is one company that is keeping the concentration camp for dogs that is Harlan Interfauna open. If your company severed ties with Harlan, then Harlan may have to close as no other company would be willing to take over and accept the contract. The horrific reality really is in your hands, but you can remedy it by please ending your contract with Harlan.

Years ago, the European Parliament decided to ban all cosmetic products and ingredients tested on animals within the European Union by March 2013. However, under pressure from companies like ICI PARIS XL and L’Oreal, the European Union is considering to postpone this date.

These cosmetic companies claim that they weren’t given enough time to develop non-animal testing techniques. An absolute disgrace, since they had years to switch to non-animal testing methods, but simply choose not to. If they get their way it could mean 10 more years during which thousands of rabbits, guinea pigs, mice and rats will be injected, gassed, or force-fed and killed worldwide for cosmetics sold in the EU.

Today, on Wednesday the 29th of Februari 2012 (CET), Dutch / Belgian anti-vivisection organisation ADC will protest infront of ICI PARIS XL stores in Belgium, Europe to ask them to respect the deadline set by the European Parliament and to immediately start replacing their cruel cosmetics with cosmetics that are not tested on animals.

In addition, ADC is organizing an online protest by asking people to send an email to ICI PARIS XL to make sure the cruelty-free message, supported by millions of European citizens, will be heard by ICI PARIS XL.

There are monkeys, mostly ‘macaques, and are intended for vivisection in the Monza in Correzzana. Appropriate Berizzi Paul speaks of the Republic:

In Italy’s practice focuses on trial for third parties and, of course, breeding for vivisection: mice, rats, rabbits, guinea pigs, primates and other large mammals. He stalled for the transfer of beagle dogs (bred by the same company Green Hill) and has specialized in “production” of animals genetically modified to better use in the trial. Examples? The species ‘programmed’ to develop cancer or immune function inoculation of polio virus and monkeypox.

The Harlan, U.S., has two facilities in Italy: Lombardy addition to this there is one in Friuli, in the province of Udine. The animals come from China, and we have all the permissions. But the protests did not stop:

“This is one of the most notorious centers of experimentation in Italy – Mocavero says Paul, president of” One hundred percent animal “that since yesterday held a garrison in front of the plant Correzzana -. Vivisection on primates in Italy is very restrictive, but regulations are regularly circumvented with permission veterinary complacent. There are about 600 Italian centers linked to the vivisection of animals:

Two million and 600 thousand specimens used between 2007 and 2009 (including 618mila used for drug research). In reference to the issue of entry into Italy of primates for scientific experimentation, the inspection of the inspectors sent by the Minister of Health, Professor. Renato Balduzzi, found no irregularities with respect to current standards.

On 21 February they arrived, with Air China flights from China, 104 specimens of the species Macaca fascicularis and Macaca Mulatta, China and Mauritius. The import permit has been issued by the Ministry of Health January 31, 2012, and allows entry of 900 records in batches of up to 156 persons. Upon arrival the animals were subjected to the visits required by the legislation and have been found in good health without any signs of stress due to travel. On February 22 veterinarians in the Border Inspection Post Fiumicino (RM) has carried out further investigations, given the sensitivity of import.

This morning the police have been conducting inspections of Nas at the factories of companies Harlan Laboratories of San Pietro al Natisone (UD) and Bresso (MI), Where are you breeding and use of mice and rats, and did not seem to be discovering irregularities. A similar inspection was performed in the establishment of Correzzana (MB), a provider of non-human primates, in which the recommendations are complied with ministerial authorization linked to the introduction of new animals and the management of those present, as regards the conditions sanitation life, which comply with regulations.

Please note that the import request is relative to 900 primates in a year, but their actual input is purely theoretical: in 2011 the same company, while making a request for 900 primates, it has imported 312 copies. These animals used for scientific or experimental.

Of all the inherently cruel conditions humans inflict on animals, nothing is more destructive and immoral than vivisection, unparalleled in both its cruel intent and apathetic nature. To subject animals to unnatural medical conditions and practices for the purpose of theorizing potential human treatments is not only scientifically illegitimate but it is also fundamentally inhumane.

From a pragmatic standpoint, if we could adequately determine the effects of drugs using animals in general, then, as I see it, human trials would be completely unnecessary. Therefore, if we acknowledge that data from animal testing cannot be extrapolated to humans, as demonstrated by the need for human testing trials prior to a general administration of drugs, then why are animals used at all?

Furthermore, tens of thousands of animals are deliberately denied pain relief while in obvious states of such, the theory being that introducing pain relief would compromise testing results. How can one honestly submit that introducing diseases to animals, subjecting them to pain, suffering, and agony, denying them companionship and comfort, and imprisoning them for life as done from a position of caring? These claims and similar responses are nothing but disingenuous rhetoric meant to deceive unknowing people: if vivisectors honestly cared about the well-being of animals, they would adamantly oppose vivisection.

Animal experimentation is unnecessary, unjustified, and unprincipled, its only function to financially benefit those who exploit animals.  Animals have rights to live free from pain and suffering regardless of your objections to acknowledge such, and as long as you profit off the torture of animals, complicit in their abuse and death, I will continue campaigning on their behalf.

We are delighted to announce that TAM Linhas Aéreas, Brazil’s and Latin America’s largest airline, has just informed the BUAV that it will no longer transport primates destined for research purposes.

Only recently, the BUAV revealed TAM Airline’s role in transporting marmosets from Brazil to a laboratory in the USA. As a direct result of the BUAV’s revelations and subsequent campaign calling on individuals and groups from around the world to contact the airline, on the 6th February, TAM Airlines announced to the BUAV that it was carrying out a review of its procedures.

Today, the airline has informed us of the outcome of that review. It has announced a new policy not to transport primates destined for research. It will be the latest in a long line of major international carriers to implement a policy on the back of widespread public concern about the trade. Examples of those airlines, that were once major carriers, to have ceased transporting primates, include British Airways, United Airlines, Northwest Airlines, South African Airways, Delta Airlines, Eva Air, American Airlines Caribbean Airlines, China Airlines and most recently, Hainan Airlines.

Michelle Thew, BUAV’s Chief Executive, said: “We welcome the action taken by TAM Linhas Aéreas to adopt a policy on this important issue. The shipment of monkeys for research is a subject that raises strong public concern. We call on remaining airlines to end their involvement in this cruel trade.”

After PETA’s massive campaign two decades ago, Avon, Mary Kay, and Estée Lauder ended all tests on animals, but now we have learned that recently, all three companies have been paying for tests on animals at the request of the Chinese government—and that they did not inform PETA or consumers that their policies had changed. We have no choice but to downgrade them by placing them on our list of companies that do test on animals.

Countless rats, guinea pigs, rabbits, and other animals suffer and die every year in cruel and pointless product tests. They have chemicals rubbed into their eyes and onto their raw skin, and they die alone and in pain. As a consumer, these animals need YOU to support companies that don’t perform—or pay others to perform—cruel tests and to ask those that do to stop.

When we learned that the Chinese government requires tests on animals before many cosmetics products can be marketed in China, we immediately contacted all three companies. While we understand that China is an enormous market that these companies aren’t willing to ignore, we had hoped they would take action to eliminate this requirement or push for non-animal test methods to be accepted. Mary Kay has taken some steps to work with officials in China and, at our urging, promised to continue this effort—but Avon and Estée Lauder appear to have gone along with the painful animal tests without objection.

To end these painful tests, PETA is financially supporting the efforts of the Institute for In Vitro Sciences (IIVS), which is putting together a coalition of scientific experts, providing training in non-animal test methods for scientists in China, and working with officials there to promote the acceptance of the more humane testing methods used in the U.S. and Europe.

Fortunately, there are still more than 1,000 companies on our “Don’t Test“ list whose products consumers can buy with a clear conscience.

SPEAK UP! Let Avon, Mary Kay, and Estée Lauder know that you are disappointed in their backsliding and that you will no longer buy the companies’ products as long they are tested on animals!

Every year, UBC conducts thousands of experiments involving animals, including pigs, mice, cats, monkeys, and others. Many of the experiments are highly invasive and painful. Most of the research is conducted with little public scrutiny. In 2010 alone, UBC used a shocking 200,000 animals in research.

‘Stop UBC Animal Research’ has discovered UBC researchers have:

- Cut open the backs of cats, inserted screws into their spines, and built restraint chambers along the cats’ spinal columns
- Administered electroconvulsive shock to monkeys to induce seizures
- Poured saline solution into newborn piglets’ lungs to induce respiratory failure
- Injected toxins into the brains of monkeys to cause a form of “parkinsonism”
- Exposed mice to cigarette smoke for six months in emphysema research
- Blinded monkeys in vision studies

SAMPLE LETTER ONE

Dear UBC President Toope,

I am ashamed to be part of a species that objectifies animals, seen as commercial products to eat, wear, and exploit for entertainment and testing. However, of all the inherently cruel conditions humans inflict on animals, nothing is more destructive and immoral than vivisection, unparalleled in both its cruel intent and apathetic nature. To subject animals to unnatural medical conditions and practices for the purpose of theorizing potential human treatments is not only scientifically illegitimate but it is also fundamentally inhumane. As a means of fostering social validation, vivisectors consistently promote the idea that animals are responsible for producing lifesaving equipment and treatments and that those who are against vivisection are opposed to medical advancements. That illogic would be laughable if millions of animals were not tortured to support such. Indeed, to grant animals the power to cure and prevent disease while experimenting on those same animals is a contradiction in both practice and thought. With respect to such idiotic assertions, when do you establish the innately flawed practice of animal experimentation as the fault when people die as the result of unpredicted drug reactions?

From a pragmatic standpoint, if we could adequately determine the effects of drugs using animals in general, then, as I see it, human trials would be completely unnecessary. Therefore, if we acknowledge that data from animal testing cannot be extrapolated to humans, as demonstrated by the need for human testing trials prior to a general administration of drugs, then why are animals used at all? To determine a general idea relative to safety of them? If animals cannot be used to predict a human outcome in general, then how can they be used to predict safety? It’s a ridiculous premise, one on which you place the lives of humans and the death of animals with a publicity machine using deceptive statements and misleading assertions fabricated by unscrupulous “scientists” to garner social approval. Indeed, to establish your legitimacy, you constantly promote the idea that those opposed to animal testing are supportive of human suffering. What an insidious remark, effective in its subtlety to gain public endorsement while at the same time fostering a hatred towards anti-vivisectionists, labeling us as misanthropists. I can assure you, I am neither ethically challenged nor stupid: your false assertions are nothing but pathetic attempts to rationalize a morally deficient industry where you capitalize on the fear of people and exploitation of animals.

Allow me but another moment to correct your disclaimers that animals are treated well, absent suffering and pain. The arrogance of such proclamations is astounding. Humans are unable to adequately describe pain in other species other than to accept its existence; to attempt such is based on pure conjecture and open to interpretation. Furthermore, tens of thousands of animals are deliberately denied pain relief while in obvious states of such, the theory being that introducing pain relief would compromise testing results. How can you honestly submit that introducing diseases to animals, subjecting them to pain, suffering, and agony, denying them companionship and comfort, and imprisoning them for life as done from a position of caring? Your claims are nothing but disingenuous rhetoric meant to deceive unknowing people: if you honestly cared about the well-being of animals, you would adamantly oppose vivisection.

Animal experimentation is unnecessary, unjustified, and unprincipled, its only function to financially benefit those who exploit animals; you are not invisible and your actions are indefensible. Animals have rights to live free from pain and suffering regardless of your objections to acknowledge such, and as long as you profit on the torture of animals, complicit in their abuse and death, I will continue campaigning on their behalf.

SAMPLE LETTER TWO

Dear UBC President Toope,

I am disturbed after discovering that live animals are subjected to mutilating experiments and killed in your institution, a practice that inflicts immense suffering upon them. These animals are marvelously intelligent and sentient beings, capable of thought, love, pain, and fear, and to expose them to this archaic method of training is alarming. In a recently-conducted survey, it has been determined that in greater than 95% of similar programs and schools in the US, the TraumaMan System has been utilized (PCRM). The TraumaMan System has been proven a superior model to the live animal “model”, and I fear any student or researcher not trained on the most advanced method will have a diminished learning experience. This should be concerning to any potential patient.

Additionally, since animals cannot be substituted for human beings, subjecting them to this exploitative process reflects a blatant disregard for life; how can we teach our future medical professionals ethics while enforcing courses and research that maims and kills live, sentient beings? This represents a conflict of interest as well as a contradiction in both morals and actions: if non-human animals are deemed similar enough to humans physiologically, then you must acknowledge that, as sentient beings, they should not be exploited and killed either. Any other conclusion would be considered a discord and would serve as a detriment to the learning process, especially in such a critical field of study.

It would be regrettable not being able to recommend your fine institution; however, because I value the most sophisticated and innovative learning techniques, it would be remiss of me to consider UBC based on your reliance of such an obsolete method of study. As such, I respectfully ask that you please accept the superior method of study, the TraumaMan System, for your university and students, and make yours an institution of credibility and honor.

I know that your time is limited, and I want to thank you for your attention and consideration.

1.Smoking was thought non-carcinogenic because smoking-related cancer is difficult to reproduce in lab animals. Many people continued to smoke and to die from cancer.[2]

2.Benzene was not withdrawn from use as an industrial chemical despite clinical and epidemological evidence that exposure caused leukemia in humans, because manufacturer-supported tests failed to reproduce leukemia in mice.[1]

3.Animal experiments on rats, hamsters, guinea pigs, mice, monkeys, and baboons revealed no link between glass fibers and cancer. Not until 1991, due to human studies, did OSHA label it carcinogenic.[3][4][5]

4.Though arsenic was a known human carcinogen for decades, scientists still found little evidence in animals to support the conclusion as late as 1977.[6] This was the accepted view until it was produced in lab animals.[7][8][9]

5.Many continued to be exposed to asbestos and die because scientists could not reproduce the cancer in lab animals.

6.Pacemakers and heart valves were delayed in development because of physiological differences between animals they were designed on and humans.

7.Animal models of heart disease failed to show that a high cholesterol/high fat diet increases the risk of coronary artery disease. Instead of changing their eating habits to prevent the disease, people continued their lifestyles with a false sense of security.

8.Patients received medications that were harmful and/or ineffective due to animal models of stroke.

9.Animal studies predicted that beta-blockers would not lower blood pressure. This withheld their development. [10][11][12] Even animal experimenters admitted the failure of animal models of hypertension in this regard, but in the meantime, there were thousands more stroke victims.

10.Surgeons thought they had perfected radial keratotomy, surgery performed to enable better vision without glasses, on rabbits, but the procedure blinded the first human patients. The rabbit cornea is able to regenerate on the underside, whereas the human cornea can only regenerate on the surface. Surgery is now performed only on the surface.

11.Combined heart lung transplants were also “perfected” on animals, but the first 3 patients all died within 23 days.[13] Of 28 patients operated on between 1981 and 1985, 8 died peri-operatively, and 10 developed obliterative bronchiolitis, a lung complication that the experimental dogs did not get. Of those 10, 4 died and 3 never breathed again without the aid of a respirator. Obliterative bronchiolitis turned out to be the most important risk of the
operation.[14]

12.Cyclosporin A inhibits organ rejection, and its development was watershed in the success of transplant operations. Had human evidence not overwhelmed unpromising evidence from animals, it would never have been released.[15]

13.Animal experiments failed to predict the kidney toxicity of the general anesthetic methoxyflurane. Many people lost all kidney function.

14.Animal experiments delayed the use of muscle relaxants during general anesthesia.

15.Research on animals failed to reveal bacteria as a cause of ulcers and delayed treating ulcers with antibiotics.

16.More than half of the 198 new medications released between 1976 and 1985 were either withdrawn or relabeled secondary to severe unpredicted side effects.[16] These side effects included complications like lethal dysrhythmias, heart attacks, kidney failure, seizures, respiratory arrest, liver failure, and stroke, among others.

17.Flosint, an arthritis medication, was tested on rats, monkeys and dogs; all tolerated the medication well. In humans, however it caused deaths.

18.Zelmid, an antidepressant, was tested on rats and dogs without incident. It caused severe neurological problems in humans.

19. Nomifensine, another antidepressant, was linked to kidney and liver failure, anemia, and death in humans. Animal testing had given it a clean, side effect-free bill of health.

20. Amrinone, a medication used for heart failure, was tested on numerous animals and was released without trepidation. Humans developed thrombocytopenia, a lack of the type of blood cells that are needed for clotting.

21. Fialuridine, an antiviral medication, caused liver damage in 7 out of 15 people. 5 eventually died and 2 more needed liver transplants.[17] It worked well in woodchucks.[18][19]

22.Clioquinol, an antidiarrheal, passed tests in rats, cats, dogs and rabbits. It was pulled off the shelves all over the world in 1982 after it was found to cause blindness and paralysis in humans.

23. Eraldin, a medication for heart disease, caused 23 deaths despite the fact that no untoward effects could be shown in animals. When introduced, scientists said it noted for the thoroughness of the toxicity studies on animals. It caused blindness and deaths in humans. Afterwards, scientists were unable to reproduce these results in animals.[20]

24. Opren, an arthritis medication, killed 61 people. Over 3500 cases of severe reactions have been documented. Opren had been tested on monkeys and other animals without problems.

25. Zomax, another arthritis drug, killed 14 people and caused many more to suffer.

26. The dose of isoproterenol, a medication used to treat asthma, was worked out in animals. Unfortunately, it was much too toxic for humans. 3500 asthmatics died in Great Britain alone due to overdose. It is still difficult to reproduce these results in animals.[21][22]

27. Methysergide, a medication used to treat headaches, led to retroperitoneal fibrosis, or severe scarring of the heart, kidneys, and blood vessels in the abdomen.[27] Scientists have been unable to reproduce this in animals.[28]

28. Suprofen, an arthritis drug, was withdrawn from the market when patients suffered kidney toxicity. Prior to its release researchers had this to say about the animal tests:[29][30] “…excellent safety profile. No …cardiac, renal, or CNS [central nervous system] effects in any species.”

29. Surgam, another arthritis drug, was designed to have a stomach protection factor that would prevent stomach ulcers, a common side effect of many arthritis drugs. Although promising in lab animal tests, ulcers occurred in human trials.[31][32]

30. Selacryn, a diuretic, was thoroughly tested on animals. It was withdrawn in 1979 after 24 people died from drug induced liver failure.[33][34]

31. Perhexiline, a heart medication, was withdrawn when it produced liver failure that had not been predicted by animal studies. Even when they knew they were looking for a particular type of liver failure, they could not induce it in animals.[35]

32. Domperidone, designed as a treatment for nausea and vomiting, made human hearts beat irregularly and had to be withdrawn. Scientists were unable to reproduce this in dogs even with 70 times the normal dose.[36][37]

33. Mitoxantrone, a treatment for cancer produced heart failure in humans. It was extensively tested on dogs, which did not manifest this effect.[38][39]

34. Carbenoxalone was supposed to prevent formation of gastric ulcers but caused people to retain water to the point of heart failure. After scientists knew what it did to humans they tested it on rats, mice, monkeys, rabbits, without reproducing this effect. [40][41]

35. Clindamycin, an antibiotic, causes a bowel condition called pseudomenbraneous colitis. It was tested in rats and dogs every day for one year. They tolerate doses 10 times greater than humans.[42][43][44]

36. Animal experiments did not support the efficacy of valium-type drugs during development or after.[45][46]

37. Pharmacia & Upjohn discontinued clinical tests of its Linomide (roquinimex) tablets for the treatment of multiple sclerosis after several patients suffered heart attacks. Of 1,200 patients, 8 suffered heart attacks as a result of taking the medication. Animal experiments had not predicted this.

38. Cylert (pemoline), a medication used to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, caused liver failure in 13 children. Eleven either died or needed a liver transplant.

39. Eldepryl (selegiline), a medication used to treat Parkinson’s disease, was found to induce very high blood pressure. This side effect has not been seen in animals, where it is used to treat senile dementia and endocrine disorders.

40. The diet drug combination of fenfluramine and dexfenfluramine was linked to heart valve abnormalities and taken off the market although animal studies had never revealed heart abnormalities.”[47]

41. The diabetes medication troglitazone, better known as Rezulin, was tested on animals without significant problems, but caused liver damage in humans. The company admitted that at least one patient had died and another had to undergo a liver transplant as a result.[48]

42. The plant digitalis has been used for centuries to treat heart disorders. However, clinical trials of the digitalis-derived drug were delayed because it caused high blood pressure in animals. Human evidence overrode. As a result, digoxin, an analogue of digitalis, has saved countless lives. Many more could it have survived had digitalis been released sooner.[49][50][51][52]

43. FK 506, now called Tacrolimus, is an anti-rejection agent that was almost shelved before proceeding to clinical trials due to severe toxicity in animals.[53][54] Animal studies suggested that the combination of FK 506 with cyclosporin might prove more useful.[55]  In fact, just the opposite proved true in humans.[56]

44. Animal experiments suggested that corticosteroids would help septic shock, a severe bacterial infection of the blood.[57][58]  Unfortunately, humans reacted differently. This treatment increased  the death rate in cases of septic shock.[59]

45. Despite the ineffectiveness of penicillin in his rabbits, Alexander Fleming used the antibiotic on a very sick patient since he had nothing else to try. Luckily, Fleming’s initial tests were not on guinea pigs or hamsters, it kills them. Howard Florey, the Nobel Prize winner credited with co-discovering and manufacturing penicillin, stated: “How fortunate we didn’t have these animal tests in the 1940s, for penicillin would probably never been granted a license, and possibly the whole field of antibiotics might never have been realized.”

46. Fluoride was withheld as a cavity preventative initially because it caused cancer in rats.[60][61][62]

47. The notoriously dangerous drugs thalidomide and DES were tested in animals and released. Tens of thousands suffered and died as a result.

48. Animal experiments misinformed researchers about how rapidly HIV replicates. Based on this false information, patients did not receive prompt therapies and their lives were shortened.

49. Animal-based research delayed the development of the polio vaccine, according to Dr. Albert Sabin, its inventor. The first rabies and polio vaccines worked well on animals but crippled or killed the people who tried them.

50. Researchers who work with animals have succumbed to illness and death due to exposure to diseases that though harmless to the animal host (such as Hepatitis B) but kill humans.

Time, money, and resources devoted to these experiments could have gone to human-based research. Clinical studies, in vitro research, autopsies, post-marketing drug surveillance, computer modeling, epidemiology, and genetic research pose no hazard to humans and provide accurate results. Importantly, animal experiments have exhausted resources that could have been dedicated to educating the public about health hazards and health maintenance, therein diminishing the incidence of disease that require treatment.

1. From Change

CareerBuilder is hurting chimpanzees, both captive and wild, with their irresponsible exploitation of chimps in their marketing campaigns over the years.

Responsible companies are creating innovative marketing campaigns with new computer generated imagery technology instead of real animals, but CareerBuilder continues to exploit live chimpanzees in their outdated ads that harken back to the mindless exploitation of the last century.

By using live chimpanzees for advertising, CareerBuilder supports an industry that hurts the chimps from the beginning of their lives when they are forceably taken away from their mothers, through their youthful isolation and often abusive training, to their final 40 or 50 years when they are discarded into sanctuaries without financial support.

Beyond the hurt done to these specific chimps, a public who laughs at zany and unnatural antics of costumed chimps is less likely to understand that chimpanzees are an endangered species that need protection.

In refusing to stop their use of chimpanzees, even though they know of the objections by animal welfare advocates, CareerBuilder commits tremendous harm to the “here and now” of the captive chimpanzees they’ve used in the past and the chimps they are using now, and the future (if it exists) of chimpanzees in the wild.


2. From Force Change

Target: Virginia State Lawmakers

Goal: Oppose the Virginia Bill which will classify dogs as livestock and deny them basic rights.

There is a bill currently awaiting passage in the Virginia Senate that would essentially classify dogs that are working, hunting, or show dogs as livestock.  It will also give the Department of Agriculture 100% control over regulation of all livestock, and will bar intervention from any outside organizations (including humane societies).  This means that no outside group will be legally allowed to help these animals if they are being neglected or treated in a cruel manner.  Livestock are allowed by law to be subject to “traditional farm practices”, many of which are inhumane and being protested by animal rights organizations.

The bill defines “traditional farm practices” as follows: “Traditional farm practice” means an accepted and customary standard established by similar agricultural operations under similar circumstances, including notching, docking, tagging, dehorning, debeaking, shoeing, trimming, dubbing, castrating, penning, cooping, caging, tethering, herding, hauling, training, showing, and culling….

In other words, any working, hunting, or show dogs will now be subject to these horrible practices with no consequences for the perpetrators who will be protected fully under this bill.  Currently, the Department of Agriculture’s staff consists of only one inspector and one veterinarian – hardly enough to ensure the well-being of thousands of animals.

The bill is scheduled to go before the Agriculture, Conservation, and Natural Resources Committee as early as January 26, 2012. It’s bad enough that livestock such as pigs and cattle suffer these “traditional farming practices”.  We cannot allow dogs to be added to this list.  Please petition Senator Black and let him know that you are opposed to classifying dogs as livestock.

Airlines play a key role in the international trade in primates for research by transporting monkeys for laboratories around the world. Cruelty and suffering are an intrinsic part of the trade. Some monkeys are taken from the wild; others are the offspring of wild-caught individuals forced into captivity for a lifetime of breeding. All are torn from their family groups, packed into small, wooden crates and shipped as cargo, usually on extremely long journeys.

Revelations by the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection (BUAV) of Air Canada’s role in the transportation of primates for research led to widespread publicity and an international campaign supported by Change.org members, animal organisations and individuals around the world. As a consequence, Air Canada has made a decision to stop the transportation of such primates and filed an amended tariff to the Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA).

The airline stated: “It was a decision taken both to align our policies with those of many other major international carriers and in response to widespread public concern.”

Unfortunately, following a complaint, the CTA has now suspended Air Canada’s amended tariff pending a hearing on its proposed new policy.

Please support Air Canada’s decision and request the Canadian Transportation Agency recognise the strength of public feeling on this issue and allow Air Canada to align its policies with those of other major passenger airlines.

Primates are highly sensitive animals, so this treatment and the conditions they endure are extremely stressful for them. Some may become ill and even die in transit. Delays, poor ventilation, noise and temperature fluctuations can add to their misery.

Only a small number of passenger airlines continue to be involved in this grim business, including Air France, China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines, China Air and Vietnam Airlines.

4. From Center for Biological Diversity

Right now, the Obama administration is accepting comments on a draft policy interpreting the phrase “significant portion of its range” (SPOIR), which specifies that if a species is at risk of extinction in any significant portion of range, it shall be protected.

This provision has played a key role in the recovery of the bald eagle, grizzly bear and many other iconic wildlife species, ensuring that animals and plants receive protection before they’re past the point of saving by providing protection to species in important parts of their home ranges.

The draft policy would limit species protection in two ways. First, it proposes that a portion of range would only be considered significant if loss of the species from that portion would threaten the species as a whole. This amounts to a regulatory sleight-of-hand that would effectively eliminate the SPOIR provision by making it largely synonymous with a species being at risk in all of its range.

Second, the policy says historic range will not be considered when determining whether a species is endangered in a significant portion of range. In effect, this calls for turning a blind eye to past losses of species, providing a perverse incentive to delay determinations of species’ status, so that they may go extinct in various portions of their range, which would then, in turn, no longer be considered for protection.

Please tell the Obama administration to scrap this disastrous policy proposal and develop one that will truly protect species when they are at risk in significant portions of range.

We can’t help but wonder what veteran Price Is Right host and crusader for orcas Bob Barker would think of the popular game show offering contestants a free trip to SeaWorld—the same cruel park that he urged families to boycott last summer in a public service announcement for PETA. But despite SeaWorld’s notoriously awful record of animal care, that’s exactly what happened on a recent episode.

In the wild, dolphins and orcas swim up to 100 miles a day in the open ocean, have complex relationships, forage cooperatively, communicate using distinct dialects, and pass down cultural traits to their offspring. At SeaWorld, these intelligent and social animals, some of whom were violently taken from their homes and families as babies, are confined to pitifully small concrete tanks. Deprived of all that is natural to them, they are forced to learn circus-style tricks—and according to whistleblower tips from trainers, withholding food and isolating animals who refuse to perform are common training methods.

The only thing that people learn from visiting a SeaWorld theme park is how miserable life is for the animals who are held captive there. Children see mere shadows of animals—defeated beings who are unable to engage in natural behaviors. These parks teach all the wrong lessons: that it is acceptable to imprison animals, deprive them of freedom of movement and thought, prevent them from exploring and establishing their natural territory, breed and separate them as we please, and allow them to go insane from loneliness.

BACKGROUND

The Endangered Species Act (ESA) is supposed to protect imperiled animals on the brink of extinction, but current regulations under the ESA leave captive chimpanzees with virtually no protection, despite the fact that wild chimpanzees receive the benefits of endangered status. This “split listing,” in which wild chimps are listed as “endangered” but captive chimps are listed as merely “threatened,” facilitates the exploitation of captive chimpanzees in entertainment, biomedical research, and the pet trade.

Since the Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) instituted the split listing of chimpanzees in 1990, the population of the species as a whole has continued to deteriorate at an alarming pace. Not only has the split listing failed to conserve wild chimpanzees, it has also caused immense suffering in captive chimpanzees, who are forced to perform demeaning tricks in commercials and movies, used in invasive animal experiments, and kept as pets in wholly unnatural environments.

But there’s good news: the Fish and Wildlife Service recently launched a status review to reexamine the status of captive chimpanzees and possibly reclassify them as “endangered.” FWS has invited the public to comment on this important issue, and is accepting comments through their website or by mail until January 30, 2012.

Join ALDF in urging the FWS to extend endangered status to captive chimpanzees, along with all of the meaningful protections such a listing entails.

I write in regard to the pending status review of chimpanzees, and specifically to encourage FWS to list the entire pan troglodyte species as endangered. The proposed listing is a long overdue step toward improving the life of captive chimpanzees in the United States. In addition, it will help to preserve the population and habitat of the pan troglodyte species around the world by calling attention to the plight of the species, and eradicating the destructive double standard that suggests that the United States is more concerned with the treatment of chimpanzees on foreign soil than within its own territory.

As the petition amply demonstrates, the pan troglodyte species meets each of the five factors to be considered by FWS in making its listing determination under the Endangered Species Act:

1. The natural habitat of the species is threatened with destruction, modification and curtailment by deforesting activities;
2. Chimpanzees in their native habitat and in captivity in the United States are grossly exploited for food, for entertainment, as personal property, and in biomedical and other research;
3. The species has been plagued by disease, both in the wild, and in captivity, where healthy chimpanzees have been infected with human diseases for research purposes.  In addition, its members are frequently killed when their natural behavior brings them into contact with humans;
4. In the thirty-five years since FWS instituted the split listing of chimpanzees, the condition of the species as a whole has continued to deteriorate at an alarming pace; and
5. By permitting the use of chimpanzees in entertainment and biomedical research, and allowing them to be kept as pets, the split listing harms captive animals in the United States by denying their wild instincts, subjecting them to torture by their human captors, and restricting genetic diversity.  That permissive approach also harms chimpanzees in the wild, by trivializing the species and minimizing the seriousness of the threat to its survival.

For each of these reasons, I strongly urge FWS to find in favor of listing the entire pan troglodyte species – captive and wild members – as endangered.

An insider from pharmaceutical giant Bristol-Myers Squibb recently approached PETA with disturbing allegations about animals who suffered painful and gruesome deaths through negligence.

The whistleblower reported that a monkey and a rat had been scalded to death when the cages in which they were each housed were carelessly put into the company’s mechanical high-temperature, high-pressure cage washer—with the animals still inside. In a separate incident, the whistleblower reports that several monkeys were tethered to their cage doors to be weighed and then left unattended. When workers returned to the room, they found that one of the monkeys had strangled to death.

In addition to these allegations of blatant neglect, from 2008 to 2010, Bristol-Myers Squibb tormented more than 20,000 animals in its laboratories, including more than 2,600 dogs and 3,400 primates who were imprisoned in cages, intentionally poisoned to death, and subjected to other painful and stressful procedures.

Astonishingly, these numbers do not even include the thousands of mice, rats, and other animals who are not covered under the Animal Welfare Act, and they do not include animals used in experiments contracted out by Bristol-Myers Squibb to other laboratories, such as the notorious Covance.

Bristol-Myers Squibb has long been on PETA’s radar, and we have submitted a shareholder resolution this year to urge the company to be more transparent and to minimize its use of animals by implementing modern, non-animal testing methods—recommended  by the National Academy of Sciences.

Please be a voice for the animals suffering in Bristol-Myers Squibb laboratories. Take a minute of your time now to urge Bristol-Myers Squibb CEO Lamberto Andreotti to implement the recommendations outlined by PETA in its shareholder resolution immediately.

Please speak up to protect chimpanzees who can’t defend themselves. The worldwide population of wild chimpanzees has fallen by nearly 70 percent in the past 30 years.

Wild chimpanzees have been protected under the Endangered Species Act since 1976, but a special rule exempting captive chimpanzees from protection is compromising conservation efforts. This loophole is preventing the recovery of the species in the wild by encouraging their illegal trade.

Chimpanzees are endangered everywhere due to habitat loss, poaching and illegal trafficking — wild chimpanzees are captured and sold for use as entertainment, as pets and as test subjects. The loophole in the Act creates a vicious cycle of supply and demand: Chimpanzees are exploited for entertainment, giving people the misconception that the species is common in the wild, which creates a demand for pet chimpanzees, which in turn leads to more poaching.

The exemption in the United States also undermines international chimpanzee conservation efforts. African nations see the animals being commercially exploited in America and have little incentive to protect them in their home range.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is now considering whether to protect captive chimpanzees under the Endangerd Species Act. Please use the form below to submit comments in support of protecting every endangered chimpanzee.

Hundreds of bullocks are currently used to transport kerosene from oil ports in Sewri, Wadala and Mulund to different rationing stations in the city. Most of the animals are underfed and malnourished, and many suffer from untreated illnesses or injuries. They are forced to work until they are exhausted, pulling heavy loads through all weather extremes. Motorists who encounter bullocks in the streets are at risk of being involved in dangerous traffic accidents.

On 30 September 2008, the Ministry of Food and Civil Supplies made the decision to end the use of bullocks to transport kerosene in Mumbai by 31 March 2009. However, there has been no shift to transporting kerosene by motorised vehicles or other means, and the ban still has not been enforced by Indian Oil, Hindustan Petroleum and Bharat Petroleum. Hundreds of bulls continue to suffer.

In a goodwill effort to jump-start the program, PETA founder Ingrid E Newkirk travelled to India from the US to donate an auto rickshaw to one owner of a bullock-drawn cart in exchange for his beleaguered bull. The bull was sent to a sanctuary.

As India’s largest and wealthiest oil company, Indian Oil Corporation Limited has the resources and an ethical obligation to end the suffering of bullocks who are used to transport their oil. However, currently, they use the most number of bulls to transport their oil. Hindustan Petroleum and Bharat Petroleum are not far behind in their support of cruelty.

These oil companies can and should help stop the use of bullock-drawn carts, yet they refuse to take concrete steps to alleviate animal suffering.

Let’s speak up for bulls and demand a complete ban on the use of bullocks by Indian Oil and other oil companies to transport kerosene.

4. Background | From PETA

An appalling video that was posted on Facebook and YouTube shows a man—who is believed to be from Malaysia—repeatedly striking a dog, shaking him, and then throwing him across the room in an apparent attempt to teach the dog to stand on his hind legs.

PETA Asia has collected information on the case and submitted it to authorities, including the government’s Veterinary Services Department as well as the police. But despite leads in the case, no action has been taken by authorities. Under Part IV of Malaysia’s animal welfare act, the Animals Act 2006, the man seen in the video could be convicted and fined RM50,000 or sentenced to six months in prison.

Please use the form HERE to urge Malaysian authorities to take immediate action to find the abuser, remove the animals currently in his care, and prosecute him to the fullest extent.

5. Background | From PETA

Animals in the custody of CCCAS are reportedly routinely denied basic humane care, including simple provisions like fresh water, regular nutritious feedings, clean and comfortable housing, and veterinary care to alleviate suffering. PETA and local advocates have repeatedly offered assistance to help bring conditions at this facility up to minimal humane standards, but our offers have been ignored or denied. Workers’ blatant disregard for the law, which mandates that animals be humanely treated, and their callous handling of animals—including spraying them in the face with water hoses to keep them from fighting over basic sustenance—continues daily without intervention from local officials.

Demand that Clarksdale and Coahoma County officials intervene immediately to ensure the humane care of animals at the shelter. Local citizens fighting for change have formed a nonprofit group with the eventual goal of building a new facility and possibly contracting with the city/county to provide animal sheltering services. While this is promising, in reality it could take years to come to fruition. The animals in Clarksdale need help now.

Please keep all calls and correspondence polite—anything less will hurt our efforts.

Almost every major airline in the world refuses to transport monkeys and other primates to cruel and painful fates in laboratories. Now Air Canada, one of only two major North American airlines that still flies primates to laboratories, wants out of the gruesome primate trade too. Air Canada stated that “[i]t was a decision taken both to align our policies with those of many other major international carriers and in response to widespread public concern.”

Unfortunately, airlines in Canada must obtain approval from the Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) to revise their shipping guidelines, and the CTA is requiring Air Canada to continue shipping primates to laboratories while it considers the issue.

As a government agency, it is important for the CTA to hear from the many individuals who support Air Canada’s compassionate attempt to get out of the cruel primate trade before any more monkeys are shipped to their deaths!

Please take a few moments of your time to contact Ghislain Blanchard, director general of the CTA’s Industry Regulation and Determinations Branch, and politely urge the agency to approve Air Canada’s amended tariff to allow the airline to refuse to ship primates to laboratories.

Many airlines all over the world refuse to transport animals destined for vivisection. Following a prolonged public campaign, the Israeli airline El-Al declared in September 2010 that its management decided to join the growing list of airlines that refuse to transport animals destined for vivisection.

Now, more than a year after El-Al stopped such transportation, vivisectionists are trying to force it to change this policy, through a lawsuit filed by The Council of University Presidents against El-Al.

The transportation of animals to labs is an integral part of the severe abuse animals endure in vivisection – they are transported in extreme packed conditions in a journey which may last tens of hours, while suffering extreme physical and mental stress, and many are found dead upon arrival.

In recent years, a significant part of the air transportation of animals for vivisection to and from Israel has comprised of monkeys imported to the Mazor Facility from Mauritius.  The Mazor Facility is a private business that has been responsible for kidnapping monkeys from the wild in Mauritius, confining and breeding them in Israel, and selling their babies abroad, for vivisection.

We the undersigned applaud the El-Al management for its moral policy, which ensures us that while we fly on vacation or on business, there will not be animals kept with our luggage on their way to hell.

As the last global airline willing to transport animals destined for research laboratories, Air France-KLM have been able to completely dominate the lab animal transportation market. Their network extends to 254 destinations in 111 countries and provides the vivisection industry with a vital link between animal suppliers and laboratories worldwide. With so few airlines now willing to transport lab animals, Air France-KLM’s services have become irreplacable to the vivisection industry and for this reason we must convince them to stop!

The Institute of Medicine today released a report that finds that chimpanzee experiments are not needed to develop an HIV vaccine, hepatitis C antiviral drugs, or treatments for a wide range of other human illnesses. The report underscores the need for Congress to pass the Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act. This bill would end chimpanzee experimentation in the United States, the last nation on earth still conducting large-scale experiments on humankind’s closest genetic relatives.

Experts from the nonprofit Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) testified before the IOM during the seven-month report process, providing evidence on the scientific and ethical problems of chimpanzee use in invasive experiments.

The report, written by a panel of scientific and medical experts convened by the IOM on behalf of the National Academy of Sciences, says that most current use of chimpanzees for biomedical research is unnecessary. Regarding hepatitis C research, for example, the report says, “The committee finds that chimpanzees are not necessary for HCV antiviral drug discovery and development and does not foresee the future necessity of the chimpanzee model in this area.”

“It’s obviously cruel to experiment on chimpanzees, and scientifically it’s just not needed,” says John J. Pippin, M.D., F.A.C.C., director of academic affairs for PCRM. “There is just no compelling scientific justification for experimenting on chimpanzees.”

Dr. Pippin, a cardiologist and former animal researcher, submitted testimony on behalf of PCRM for the IOM’s inaugural committee meeting in May. PCRM experts again testified before the IOM committee in August about the medical and ethical reasons for ending chimpanzee experimentation.

Decades of chimpanzee experiments focusing on HIV, hepatitis C, and other diseases have not resulted in effective vaccines. Observational researchers have found that many of these chimpanzees held captive in laboratories and used in experiments suffer from symptoms of depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder. In September, Scientific American called for an end to chimpanzee experiments, and others have echoed the same sentiment.

The bipartisan Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act, legislation which has support in the House and Senate, would phase out chimpanzee experiments and release federally owned chimpanzees to permanent sanctuaries. It would also save taxpayers almost a third of a billion dollars over the next decade.

The United States is the only nation still using chimpanzees in large-scale invasive research. Other nations, including the European Union and Japan, no longer permit such experiments.

Over Christmas break, December 21, 2011, Binghamton University in Upstate New York is planning to slaughter 90% of the deer in their Nature Preserve, at a cost of $20,000.00 dollars +. As we understand, this is NY taxpayers’ dollars.

Julian Shepherd Ph.D., who heads up The Committee of the University Environment, and Dylan Horvath, steward of nature areas at the university, are blaming the deer for eating flowers and for forest regeneration problems. However, their claims are not supported by any scientific evidence. B.U. didn’t even do a deer survey or an environmental impact study.

Many forest experts disagree with the general premise of their claims. “Acid rain is more responsible than white-tailed deer for forests not regenerating … They can kill all the deer, but it will take a lot more than that to fix the forests.”, claims Bill Sharpe, a Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences forest hydrologist, “Penn State Expert Blames Forest Problem on Acid Rain, Not Deer”, Penn State Live, 5/17/02. In a recent landmark study, “Regional-Scale Assessment of Deer Impacts on Vegetation Within Western Connecticut, USA”, Angela C. Rutherford, et al., School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, Yale University, (Journal of Wildlife Management 74(6):1257-1263. 2010) concluded that deer density is not a leading factor determining variation in vegetation impacts. And a recent study at Ohio State University, “Indirect Effects of a Keystone Herbivore Elevate Local Animal Diversity”, Katherine Greenwald, et al., Department of Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology (Journal of Wildlife Management 72(6):1318-1321; 2008) found that the presence of deer is actually helpful to other animal species, and that programs to reduce their populations may be detrimental to a region’s biodiversity. “Culling deer may cascade into affecting plants, salamanders and other creatures in ways we can’t even imagine,” said OSU researcher Katherine Greenwald. “Officials need to know more about the forest ecosystem before making decisions about wildlife management.” Another study showed that some forest understory-dwelling birds benefit from deer-grazing, and that the presence of deer decreased populations of rodents that preyed on ground birds’ nests.

This deer slaughter will not achieve B.U.’s objectives, and trying to keep deer at unrealistic low levels poses an insurmountable challenge. Culling or hunting deer will trigger compensatory reproduction. The deer population will rebound quickly, and deer from adjacent areas will quickly fill the void, leading to an endless cycle of killing.

The forest ecology in B.U.’s Nature Preserve is no different than the rest of the forest areas in New York State. That said, a nature preserve should remain untouched and allowed to evolve naturally without human intervention. In reviewing the history and mandate of B.U.’s Nature Preserve, it said that, ” In order to preserve its natural beauty and intrinsic value it was suggested that hunting, littering, use of motorized or wheeled vehicles, picking of plant life, and harassment of animal life be prohibited throughout the entire area.”

If B.U. wants to create a protected environment to grow wildflowers that can’t be affected by wildlife, then B.U. should explore creative fencing alternatives, or build an arboretum. If B.U. insists on interfering with the natural processes within the Nature Preserve, then a deer contraception program should be considered. Contrary to what Mr. Horvath believes, there are a number of scientific peer-reviewed studies that document deer contraception effectiveness, reducing deer populations by approximately 40-60%.

The DEC spends millions of dollars annually to artificially propagate the deer population for maximum sustained yield for their 3% hunter constituents. Deer populations stabilize on their own in relation to the available food supply. Culling or hunting will only reduce the deer population temporarily and trigger compensatory rebound, which will increase the deer population the following year. And just an update for Mr. Horvath, there are 20-30,000 coyotes (predators) in New York State, i.e. he said that coyotes were hunted out a century ago.

Please send Binghamton University a strong message to stop the deer slaughter, and not to turn their Nature Preserve into a private hunting and killing preserve.

I stand with the Achuar and support their struggle to defend their Amazon homeland from oil drilling and destructive development.

I am deeply concerned about the escalating situation on the ground around your operations in Block 64. Recent testimony from two Catholic priests in the region describe a situation where Talisman Energy is responsible for heightening divisions between indigenous communities which could lead – in their words – to “genocide.”

I understand that the majority of Achuar people of the Pastaza and Morona river basins, represented by the National Achuar Federation (FENAP), have repeatedly called on Talisman Energy to withdraw from their ancestral homeland. I am concerned that attempts to seek “community agreement” are causing division and the risk of conflict.

I write now to demand that Talisman immediately cease divisive tactics on the ground and respect the Achuar people’s demand and cease operations in their ancestral territory.

Following a year-long PETA campaign, the University of Michigan’s (U-M) Survival Flight program has replaced the use of cats in cruel intubation training exercises with modern human-patient simulators. Unfortunately, the program continues to have trainees cut holes into pigs’ limbs, throats, and chests and stab needles into their bones and hearts for trauma training exercises. This still happens even though the school already uses state-of-the-art human-patient simulators to teach the same skills in other courses for nurses and physicians.

Studies by leading medical experts have repeatedly found that in addition to saving animals, the use of simulators is superior to the use of animal labs for preparing trainees to perform the lifesaving skills taught in U-M’s Survival Flight course. The Air & Surface Transport Nurses Association, which is the professional organization representing flight nurses, endorses the use of simulators to teach these skills as well.

Please take a minute of your time to contact university officials and respectfully ask them to continue to modernize the Survival Flight curriculum and immediately replace the use of pigs with human-patient simulators that are already available at U-M.

Deputies and animal control officers were called out to the home of Marie Alfano and Kevin John Diers after an anonymous complaint. There they discovered a gruesome case of animal abuse: an eight week-old puppy had been skinned and gutted, then fed to their other dogs. One dog was found eating the leg of the puppy. The other dogs were fed the puppy’s internal organs and meat. Yet another dog was found dead in a cage.

It is unknown if the puppy was intentionally killed for this purpose or died from other causes. The puppy’s remains have been collected for analysis.

Alfano and Diers were charged with cruelty to animals and failing to dispose of a deceased domesticated animal. Under North Carolina law, animal cruelty (§ 14-360) is a Class H felony.

The next court date for Alfano and Diers will be on January 6, 2012. Please sign to show your support that animal abusers cannot get away with such horrendous acts.

Her birth date is recorded as 1/1/00. Her journey to the United States began overseas in China. Huge breeding farms in this nation hold tens of thousands of primates in captivity before sending them to the U.S. Facilities in this nation are virtually unregulated. The photograph of the rusted enclosure above is from such a facility.

She spent almost a decade in the U.S., apparently in the Alice (TX) holding facility owned by the Covance Research Products Company. During 2009 she was treated a total of 20 times including physical examinations, TB tests, treatments for parasites, weighing and physical exams. According to these records, nothing was wrong. In fact, she was examined only ten days before her death, and nothing was noticed. She was given a clean bill of health.

She arrived at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) on 10/29. Her records from UCSF paint a very different picture from the official Covance record. At 11:51 am she is listed as having “Several fresh puncture wounds on extremities (upper and lower).” There is “fresh blood in cage.” And she “is exhibiting SIB behavior (per DVM).” SIB means self-injurious behavior.

At 12:40 PM she is “Sitting up . . . several fresh abrasion/red marks on ® upper & lower arm.” Shortly after this she is anesthetized for a physical examination, using ketamine and acepromazine. Additional dosages of these drugs are given to maintain anesthesia when she starts to regain consciousness. All in all she is anesthetized from 12:57 PM to 2:55 PM for examination. At 2:55 an intravenous catheter is inserted and she is killed with 3 ccs of Euthasol.

Her body is described “Multiple SIB puncture wounds on plantar surfaces (soles) of both feet and on distal portions of legs and arms. Many wounds appeared to be several days old and most of the wounds on the feet were inflicted during the SIB episode earlier today. Evidence of acute and chronic SIB. Several deep and superficial puncture wounds present.”

She was never named. We know her only as RQ5977. But her suffering was not unique, many primates from this Covance facility have major injuries.

According to Covance records, RQ4571 was missing the pinnae of both ears, had a defect to the 5th finger of the right hand, and was missing the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th digits on the right hand. The right leg cannot be fully extended and had moderate muscle wasting.

RQ 4562’s right eyelid cannot close and the eye may have had a cataract. The right hip cannot fully extend and has muscle wasting. RQ5967 is missing the pinna of the left ear, the right 2nd finger is too short, and the right 3rd toe is missing 2 phalanges. RQ4373 has an eyelid that is scarred and fused to the eyebrow, which leads to overtearing. The pinnae of both ears are missing, the right thumb is deformed, the 3rd finger of the left hand is fused from an old fracture, part of the right mandible is missing.

Many other monkeys from this facility are missing fingers or toes, or have broken digits or damaged ears. Out of 31 animals discussed in these records, 19 of them had an injury of one type or another; this amounts to an injury rate of 61.3%. So much for captivity keeping animals safe.

The massive Covance facility that shipped these animals is almost too big to imagine. The last inspection showed that 7861 crab-eating macaques and 5464 rhesus macaques, or 13,325 primates total, were imprisoned here as of June of 2011. This inspection report also shows that there is a significant problem with the monkeys developing frost-bite injuries on their tails due to inadequate enclosures.

The information discussed here is from records for only a few animals, but it provides a reasonable picture. If we extend these numbers out, then it is likely that 8168 of the animals at this facility are injured. Thousands are missing fingers, toes, ears, tails, eyelids, or possibly even entire arms or legs. This is a veritable army of cripples, but there is no war -  thousands of injuries without a battlefield.

No place can the bloodbath be better seen than in that enclosure which held RQ5977 during the trip from Covance to UCSF. According to her records, many of her injuries were old, and so she may have been self-destructive while at Covance, before her trip began. By the time she arrived at UCSF she had multiple puncture wounds to her hands and feet, and all the way up her arms and legs. She was probably incarcerated in the small travel enclosure, not unlike a portable dog kennel, for one or two fear-filled days — locked inside the belly of an airplane or the back of a truck, totally isolated, with no idea what was happening to her, in darkness, possibly enduring changes in altitude;  she simply could not control her fear and stress. Attacking the cage did no good. There was nothing else available but her own body. Her wounds were severe enough that the only option was to kill her.

I am thankful that her misery ended, that she was prevented from any more suffering. She has been released from a world which she probably saw only as suffering and agony.

In reality, I never looked into that carrier. I never saw that desolate creature. I didn’t look into her crazed eyes. I didn’t touch her wounds. I didn’t wipe the blood from her body or her cage. But the images which her simple two-page description has generated are permanently etched into my mind. I know what abject suffering looks like.

Her life could have been worse; all of her suffering could have been heightened. Upon surviving the trip, she could have found her way into an experiment that caused brain damage, confined her to a restraint chair, deprived her of water, or even bolted devices into her skull.

Imagine to already be so agonized and then to have these things piled on to your helpless consciousness. To be so inundated with suffering that misery is the sum total of your existence. Every second is confinement, thirst, pain, isolation, and fear.

I doubt that anything we can endure can be as terrifying and as soul wrenchingly painful as what RQ5977 endured. Her captivity, her insanity, her utter inability to change her situation in any way, and her total isolation are all beyond anything we can even comprehend.

As gut wrenching as her situation was we must not turn away from it, for that would be the easy way out. We must somehow make it part of ourselves. We must keep her in our hearts. We must remember her because we owe her that much.

She will never have justice. We cannot give her her life back. We cannot somehow magically put her back in the wild where she belonged. The ten years that she spent inside the Covance Concentration Camp cannot be undone.

Why was she there so long? Why wasn’t she simply sold sooner? The answer is breeding. There are now ten years worth of her sons, daughters, grandsons, and granddaughters — generation upon generation of her progeny potentially at Covance. Or they may have been shipped to UCSF, in a cage just like hers. They could be at the University of Kentucky. It makes no difference where they are imprisoned, they are still inmates. They have an inheritance of confinement, a legacy of agony. It is up to us to do something about this. We owe it to them and to her.

The next time that our work seems overwhelming, the next time that the pictures are too hard to look at, the next time that it all seems too difficult, remember RQ5977. We owe her, and her children, a debt that cannot be paid. Remember them and keep going. Keep pushing, keep fighting, keep protesting – never give up. Members of our species have done this terrible thing to her and her family. Remember the eyes of this terrified, injured, bleeding monkey. Look in deeply. Drink in the agony of her soul. Drown.

It is up to us to make this right.

Please End the Use of Live Animals in UVA’s Pediatrics Residency

Live cats are used in a cruel pediatrics residency training program at the University of Virginia. PCRM’s recent federal complaint says this is unlawful and that the university already owns a simulator that better mimics newborn anatomy.

Pediatrics training at the University of Virginia (UVA) includes repeatedly forcing a plastic tube through the mouth and into the windpipe (trachea) of a live cat. Animals used in this training procedure often suffer tracheal bruising, bleeding, scarring, severe pain, and they are at risk of death.

“It is unnecessary to traumatize and harm animals to teach pediatric emergency procedures, especially when validated simulators developed to replace animals are widely used,” says Josie Kinkade, M.D., a local physician who co-signed the federal complaint. “A newborn’s anatomy is different from a cat’s, and residents at UVA can get a better education using human based medical simulators.”

UVA’s state-of-the-art medical simulation center already owns a simulator validated for this training. Numerous pediatrics residencies use the Gaumard Premie HAL and Premie Blue simulators, which mimic the airway of a low birth weight premature newborn.

PCRM’s complaint, which was filed with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Eastern Region Animal Care office, states, “UVA is violating the AWA because superior training methods exist that could replace the university’s use of live animals and alleviate this severe pain.” The complaint also cites inadequate oversight in the approval of the training protocol by the school’s animal care and use committee.

The Animal Welfare Act’s implementing regulations “require that a principal investigator—including course instructors—consider alternatives to procedures that may cause more than momentary or slight pain or distress to any animal used for research purposes.”

Nonanimal education methods are exclusively used by 94 percent of U.S. pediatrics programs, including those at Eastern Virginia Medical School, Inova Fairfax Hospital and Hospital for Children, and Virginia Commonwealth University Health System in Richmond, according to an ongoing PCRM survey.

A distraught whistleblower from Shin Nippon Biomedical Laboratories (SNBL), a notorious Everett, Washington-based animal testing conglomerate, contacted PETA to reveal shocking allegations of mistreatment of animals used in painful and lethal experiments. The whistleblower weighed her concerns for her job and fear of retaliation against the suffering and deaths of animals that she witnessed every day at SNBL and repeatedly appealed to SNBL managers and supervisors to improve conditions for animals in the company’s laboratories. After those pleas were ignored, she felt compelled to contact PETA.

SNBL torments tens of thousands of primates, dogs, rabbits, and other animals every year to test products for other companies. It force-feeds animals experimental chemicals to intentionally sicken and kill them and infects them with debilitating diseases.

SNBL is the third-largest importer of primates in the U.S., purchasing nearly 3,000 monkeys every year from China, Cambodia, Israel, and Indonesia—some snatched from their homes and families in the wild—for use in experiments.

According to the whistleblower, in one experiment at SNBL, monkeys were hooked to their cages with a metal tether through which ice-cold saline solution and test compounds were continuously dripped into their veins. The monkeys were kept like this for many months and reportedly were so cold that they shivered and their teeth chattered non-stop. Monkeys had blood drawn from their arms many times a day, resulting in swelling, redness, and bruising of their limbs. These wounds were considered “routine” and were never treated. After the first few blood draws, the monkeys’ veins were damaged, and workers would poke and dig around in the limb to find others. The monkeys winced, screamed, trembled, and shook, and tried to defend themselves. The whistleblower said, “Eventually, many of the monkeys stop fighting and reacting … it is like the life is gone from them.”

While working at SNBL, the whistleblower observed workers handling the monkeys so violently that the animals suffered bloodied noses, broken fingers and toes, and bruises to their bodies. Their tails were bent or deformed because workers slammed cage doors on them. The employees also allegedly banged loudly on the monkeys’ cages to frighten and intimidate them into being quiet. Managers and supervisors apparently knew of this ongoing physical and psychological abuse of monkeys but refused to stop it.

The whistleblower also reported that monkeys were tied for many hours in restraint chairs with their arms and legs kept entirely immobile as drugs were injected intravenously over the course of a day. The whistleblower said, “The monkeys fight continuously for hours to loosen the ropes … it is just too much for them.” Some monkeys collapsed in the restraint chairs and never recovered.

A USDA report from 2011 documented that 78 percent of the monkeys at SNBL are caged alone—in violation of federal law—unable to touch or interact in any way with other monkeys. This is so distressing to monkeys that they develop stress-induced abnormal behaviors such as self-mutilation, incessant rocking, and hair-pulling.

Like the whistleblower, federal inspectors have also found cruelty and neglect inside SNBL’s laboratories. U.S. Department of Agriculture inspection and investigation reports reveal hundreds of violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act. The company was recently assessed fines of $31,000 and $12,900 for denying veterinary care and adequate pain relief to suffering animals and failing to ensure that experiments were not duplicated. SNBL also made headlines in 2008 after a whistleblower revealed that a monkey had been boiled to death when her cage was put into a high-temperature cage-washing machine while she was still in it. In 2010, the FDA cited SNBL for failing to ensure that employees charged with providing care for the thousands of animals at SNBL were properly trained.

SNBL’s customers—the companies for which it conducts tests on animals—include Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, Eli Lilly, AstraZeneca, Genentech, and Seattle Genetics. Several government agencies—including the Department of Defense, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Department of Health and Human Services—have signed contracts with SNBL worth more than $1 million. And, SNBL profits from the importation and sales of monkeys for use in experimentation.

Please take a stand for the monkeys imprisoned at SNBL by calling on airlines to stop transporting primates destined for laboratories.

This is a petition to the Dutch Minister of Environment who has agreed on a genetically engineered (GM) vaccination study re foals in foals from 3 days old until 6 months.

They use a GM-bacterium. The little horses will stay with their mothers in stables and on grassland and the manure with the GMO in it will be put on the land. The little horses shall eventually be killed (in case of biopsy) after the study is done. The European GMO-free Citizens agree with a Dutch signer who wrote that, GM-vaccines are very dangerous. There is a real risk of the generation of new pathogens with greater virulence and a broader host-range than the original pathogen. And there is no possibility of undoing it.The European GMO-free Citizens don’t want this GM vet-vaccine and have written this petition, which you can sign.

We will go to the Dutch Council of State in the Hague. This topic and these signatures are brought to their attention. The hearing will be on October the 3rd 2011.

Air Canada, Stop Shipping Monkeys For Research!

Primate Products, Inc. is a Miami-based corporation that imports and sells monkeys for use in research and testing. Primate Products is infamous for shocking photographs of injured animals that appeared in 2010.

Recently, in response to a public records request, ARFF received copies of certificates detailing 74 separate shipments by Primate Products between July 2010 and August 2011, totaling 1,818 monkeys.

The records reveal that 40% of the monkeys whom Primate Products shipped out of Florida during the 12 month period were for one company– WIL Research, a contract research laboratory in Ashland, Ohio.

- In April 2011, Primate Products was cited by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for leaving monkeys who were still under anesthesia in an enclosure without supervision, and in the hot sun.

Your business with Primate Products is no secret. Poor employee morale at Primate Products has made the company leakier than an old rusty bucket!

Please, do the right thing and permanently sever your ties with Primate Products.

Ask the University of Virginia to End the Use of Cats in Its Pediatrics Residency

We need your help to stop the abuse of cats by the University of Virginia. Today, PCRM filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, explaining that the school is violating the federal Animal Welfare Act by using live cats in its pediatrics residency program. Please help this effort by asking the school to end the use of animals today.

At the University of Virginia (UVA) breathing tubes are pushed down the throats of live cats to teach endotracheal intubation. This painful procedure is repeated numerous times on each animal and can cause tracheal bruising, bleeding, and severe trauma. Nonanimal training methods exist, making this use of animals not only cruel but unnecessary.

Further, UVA acquires cats for this training from an animal dealer (Liberty Research of Waverly, N.Y.) with a history of repeated violations of the Animal Welfare Act (AWA). Between July 2009 and April 2011, U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) inspectors found 11 violations of the AWA, highlighting Liberty Research’s lack of sanitation and maintenance of housing units for cats and dogs.

So far, the responsible UVA faculty and administrators have ignored pleas to change this practice. Please e-mail UVA School of Medicine dean Steven DeKosky, M.D., and urge him to end this cruel and unnecessary practice. Send an automatic e-mail.

Gaumard’s Premie HAL and PREMIE Blue simulators, designed to mimic the airway of a premature newborn; Laerdal’s SimNewB, which was developed in partnership with the American Academy of Pediatrics; and METI’s BabySim can all be used for this type of training. UVA’s state-of-the-art simulation center already owns a BabySim so the switch to simulation can be made immediately.

More than 94 percent of pediatrics residency programs in the United States do not use animals. It is time for UVA to join the majority. Please e-mail Dr. DeKosky today and ask him to replace the use of animals in UVA’s pediatrics residency program.

I am writing to ask that you immediately end the use of cats in the University of Virginia’s (UVA) pediatrics residency program. The use of live animals for this purpose is cruel and outdated. In order to resolve our country’s historic budget crisis, the U.S. Congress has created a 12-member “Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction” that is to create a plan by November 23 to reduce our nation’s debt by at least $1.2 trillion over 10 years. There are many areas of spending on which the 6 Republicans and 6 Democrats will have difficulty agreeing. However, because so much wasteful spending also needlessly harms animals, this gives the animal protection community an enormous and extraordinary opportunity to suggest budget cuts that the committee can easily agree on!

Ending chimpanzee experimentation would save over $300 million. The National Institutes of Health is leading the attempt to try and convince the public, and Congress, that chimpanzee experimentation is necessary. But the concept of ending this morally and scientifically bankrupt practice has become so mainstream, on so many fronts – scientific, ethical, political, financial – that on September 28, Scientific American, perhaps the most prestigious general interest science magazine in the world, called for a ban, explaining “Why it is time to end invasive biomedical research on chimpanzees.”

The emerging scientific, ethical and political consensus is clear: as Scientific American so aptly said, “[T]he time has come to end biomedical experimentation on chimpanzees.” IDA is asking our members to send a fax to the committee to give them the opportunity to make that consensus a reality while saving U.S. taxpayers $300 million. The fax will automatically be sent to your own U.S. Senators and Representative also.

2. Background | From IDA

IDA has sent a letter to Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, calling for the removal of Los Angeles Zoo veterinarian Ellen Wiedner. The demand was prompted by Dr. Wiedner’s recent testimony at a public hearing in San Diego County, during which she expressed adamant support for Have Trunk Will Travel, the company whose trainers were caught on video viciously striking several elephants including a calf with bullhooks, and using an electric prod on another. She called these cruel and illegal acts appropriate care and control of elephants.

Not only did Dr. Wiedner condone the violent use of bullhooks on several elephants, even when pressed she would not condemn the use of an electric prod, which is strictly illegal in California. This is not a person who should be caring for elephants at the Los Angeles Zoo!

Dr. Wiedner previously was the director of animal care for the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, which has been at the center of controversy due to the abuse of elephants with bullhooks. This is well-documented on video and in sworn testimony from a recent federal trial.

I am shocked that Proctor & Gamble continues to support animal experimentation as there is no legitimate reason for testing products on animals. First, despite P&G claims, product testing is NOT mandated by law. Second, there already are ingredients that have an established, proven safety record for human use. These products, such as those found on the FDA GRAS list, can be utilized and manufactured in the absence of cruel, painful animal experimentation. P&G’s blatant disregard for animals and its decision to not use GRAS ingredients exclusively is irresponsible and negligent.

Furthermore, your company’s attempt to foster an idea that consumers continually support animal experimentation due to some inaccurate notion that it will prevent them from being harmed is unprincipled.  Product misuse and abuse can lead to harm regardless of how many animals were wrongfully killed during the product testing phase.  In fact, corporate manipulation and exploitation of consumer fear by using deceptive advertising is unethical. As such, as long as Proctor & Gamble continues to unnecessarily and selfishly capitalize on the mutilation, torture, and death of animals, I will not financially support you; furthermore, I will promote a boycott by informing family, friends, and members of online communities.

Please make both the ethical and financially-responsible decision to discontinue animal experimentation immediately: join an increasing body of corporations who are listening to a concerned and attentive consumer population who refuse to be complicit in the inherently malicious industry of animal experimentation.
